Light show

Over Shoreline

Almost all of North America witnessed the aurora light show, which stretched from inside the Arctic Circle to the doorstep of the equator. Auroras were seen in all 50 US states, including Hawaii.

The storm was caused by two CMEs*, which struck Earth in quick succession during the late hours of November 11, 2025.

The CMEs were crowded so close together, they had the characteristics of a Cannibal CME--that is, strong internal magnetic fields and shock waves capable of sparking intense geomagnetic activity. - Space Weather.com

*According to Wikipedia "A coronal mass ejection (CME) is a significant ejection of plasma mass from the Sun's corona into the heliosphere."

LFP Prop One too close to call

By Oliver J Moffat

The Lake Forest Park property tax measure is still too close to call.

Prop 1 would fund police and public safety services

The Lake Forest Park property tax ballot measure would fund police and public safety services, but voters in the city have never approved a property tax increase.

After a week of counting, there were only 20 more “No” votes than “Yes” votes, a narrow 50.18% lead as of Tuesday, November 11.

Every day of counting has seen “Yes” votes gaining on “No” votes as more ballots are counted. In the first tranche of ballots counted on election night, “No” votes led by 51.63%.

Counting will continue until November 25, 2025.

Since the state imposed the 1% property tax limit, Lake Forest Park voters have repeatedly rejected property tax increases. A 2010 levy failed with 78% of voters opposing, and a 2021 levy to pay for parks and sidewalks also failed with 65% of voters against it.

There will be no automatic recount.

Local ballot measures do not trigger automatic recounts even if the vote is very close, according to the King County Elections Recount website.

Automatic recounts only occur for statewide ballot measures with narrow margins, says the Secretary of State’s Recount FAQ website.

However, a group of voters can request a recount.

For a recount to happen, a group of five or more registered voters may formally request a recount in writing within two business days after the election results are certified. The November general election results will be certified on Tuesday, November 25, 2025.

The request must be filed with King County Elections and include a deposit to cover the expense of the recount. The deposit will be $0.25 per ballot for a manual recount or $0.15 for a machine recount.

If the recount changes the election result, the deposit is refunded. But if the recount does not reverse the outcome, the group who requested the recount must pay for the full cost of recounting the ballots.

Blue Heron Park restoration project work party

Blue Heron Park

On Saturday November 8, 2025 a major work party was held at Blue Heron Park in Lake Forest Park. This event was part of the ongoing restoration project that the park will be undergoing. It will be an ongoing project which is expected to take several years to complete. Several groups are involved in this process along with the city for planning and organization.

For this work party we planned to focus on cleanup of the main planting area in order to make way for the next phase which will be renovating the soil, installing an irrigation system and planting. We will be focusing the planting on natives, pollinators and water wise plants. New signage will eventually be installed.

We had a wonderful turnout of 30 volunteers and several young gardeners who came with their parents and enjoyed helping out. We welcomed members of Rotary, Interact, Stewardship Foundation, Master Gardeners and members of the community. We also had the pleasure of welcoming two of our city council members.

Our work parties will be scheduled every second Saturday of each month, weather permitting. Hours will be 9:00am to noon.

Free FISH WAR screening at Shoreline College
Friday, November 14, 5:00 PM
Shoreline Community College Theater
The Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission and nonprofit Meaningful Movies Project will be hosting a free screening of the documentary FISH WAR at Shoreline College Theater on Friday, Nov. 14. Doors open at 5 p.m., film starts at 6 p.m. Screening will be followed by a panel discussion including NWIFC Chairman Ed Johnstone and others featured in the film. Edmonds Bookshop will be there, selling books about the treaty rights struggle in the Pacific Northwest, including Ramona Bennett Bill's Fighting for the Puyallup Tribe, Charles Wilkinson's Treaty Justice and Messages from Frank's Landing (with Billy Frank Jr.) and Bill Wilkerson's In Common With. FISH WAR highlights the violent struggle faced by Indigenous nations to exercise their treaty-protected right to harvest salmon in the Pacific Northwest. The protests led to a federal court case, U.S. v. Washington, that changed the way the state and treaty tribes care for the environment. The Boldt decision in this case went all the way to the Supreme Court. It should have put an end to the Fish Wars.
Fifty years later, however, tribal treaty rights face adversaries including habitat destruction and climate change, which threaten to destroy salmon runs forever.

Elections: The last three

For Lake Forest Park and Kenmore, we are down to the last three.

1. On the 6th day of ballot counting, Joe Marshall leads challenger Tracy Banaszynski by 32 votes for the Kenmore city council.

2. In Lake Forest Park Josh Rosenau has pulled ahead of incumbent Jon Lebo by 378 votes and appears to be headed for a seat on the council.

3. The No votes on LFP's Prop 1 still lead - by 20 votes.

This would be a very good time to make sure that your ballot was counted. King county will attempt to contact every voter with a ballot problem. They will text, email, or phone you, depending on what you put on the outside of your ballot envelope. If you put nothing in that space, they will use whatever contact info is on file for you.

You can be proactive and check to see if your signature was verified and your ballot was counted.

Go to My Voter Information - fill in your data and it will tell you if your ballot is counted and if not, what you need to do about it.

2025 3A Girls State Soccer Tournament (11/11 – 11/22) Primer

Last Saturday afternoon, the Shorewood Stormrays finished runner-up in the 3A District 1 final versus Snohomish Panthers, losing a frustrating contest 0-2. The Stormrays season record stands at 10-7-3, second in District 1, WesCo 3A South league 4th place, with an RPI of 0.5425.

In the final, they missed a penalty kick, and conceded two goals in the last five minutes. Snohomish kept a clean sheet throughout the playoffs, behind a strong defensive line, a superb goalkeeper and impeccable counterattacking – worthy District 1 Champions.

Both Shorewood (WesCo South) and Snohomish (WesCo North) have qualified for the 3A State Tournament as the #19 and #5 seeds.

Last Thursday night, Shorecrest was hoping to join the party by taking third place, but underdog Edmonds-Woodway unleashed a late strike to knock out the Scots, 1-2.

HS soccer fans would know that both Shorewood and Shorecrest have been the Golden Girls the last four years, going to the ball every year, whereas Ed-Wood and Snohomish have had many lean years of stumbling in the playoffs, missing out on State.

This year, would be the Revenge Of The Stepsisters, as Snohomish seized the District championship, and Edmonds-Woodway secured 3rd place, earning both a spot in State. Also from District 1, are Edmonds-Woodway (WesCo South) and Oak Harbor (Northwest Conference), the #15 and #16 seeds.

Spare a thought for the plucky Lynnwood Royals, who despite a winless season of 0-13-0, competed and showed up cheerfully, week-in, week-out, and played hard despite a limited roster, and without a JV team.

Shorewood’s JV team finished the season with a somber record of 3-6-1, finishing 5th in the league table, overshadowed by 2nd place 7-2-1 Shorecrest JV counterparts.

Following the conclusion of the District tournaments, the State 3A playoff brackets have been set, against teams from Districts 1-6. The top twelve seeds receive a bye, while the remaining eight seeds face off in a play-in round to advance.

Shorewood is seeded #19, and will meet #14 Ridgeline (Greater Spokane League, District 6) in the First Round on Tuesday 11/11.

Edmonds-Woodway is seeded #15, and will meet #18 Silas (Puget Sound League, District 3) in another First Round on Wednesday 11/12.

The top seeds are #1 Gig Harbor, #2 Mt. Spokane, #3 Bellevue and #4 Eastside Catholic. The play-in, eighth-final, and quarter-final rounds will be hosted by the higher seed at their home stadium, or at a neutral site, depending on geography.

Quarter-finals will be on Saturday 11/15, semi-finals on Friday 11/21, and final on Saturday 11/22. The State semifinals and finals, as is customary, will be held at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup, as well as a third place contest for the losing semi-finalists.

Fear not Shorecrest, Shorewood will be your standard-bearer now! But will it be Ecstasy or Agony?
