Travels with Charlie: What’s This at Animal Acres Demo Garden?

Thursday, October 1, 2026

What’s This at Animal Acres Demo Garden?

Story & Photos by Gordon Snyder

Charlie and I were walking around Animal Acres path by the Demonstration Garden. I had to stop and check out this new box installed in the garden.

Know what this is?
At first I thought was one of the park sculptors that make little debris artworks. But when looking closer, there is a lot of “diversity” on each of the shelves.

Hmmm…. I did a little checking and found a wonderful project. Back in the fall of 2024, a unique collaboration between King County Master Gardeners, Lake Forest Park Rotary, and Interact Students and Counselor from Shorecrest High School embarked on creating a pollinator garden as part of the Demonstration Garden at Pfingst Animal Acres Park in Lake Forest Park.

Efforts to be spent on plants birds & native insect pollinators.

So what is this? It's an Insect Hotel (also called a Bug Hotel or Bee Hotel). This structure was integrated as an educational asset by the King County Master Gardeners to demonstrate eco-friendly backyard conservation practices.

Shoutout to the Volunteers for this Living Ecology Display. Check it out when you can…

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

================
Want a closer look at this?

Here’s what I discovered…

Instead of being random debris from the park, the materials inside the Hotel were carefully curated to mimic the natural wintering and nesting environments required by different beneficial insects at Animal Acres.

Some suggested details:
  • Hollow Reeds & Bamboo Tubes: These create ideal nesting tunnels specifically for native solitary bees (like mason bees and leafcutter bees) which do not live in hives.
  • Twigs, Bark, & Drilled Wood: These provide tight nooks and crannies for beetles, lacewings, and ladybugs that feed on common garden pests.
  • Terracotta Pots & Bricks: The broken clay pots shield sections from rain while absorbing ambient warmth from the sun, offering a dry shelter for spiders and crawling beneficial insects.
  • Wire Mesh Cover: The hardware cloth mesh secured across the front protects the delicate hibernating insects and their larvae from being eaten or torn apart by foraging birds.

Make one for your backyard. Let’s be watching this as the seasons change.

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Autumn Crocus fragile and beautiful blooms.

Fall is here… Out for a Fall walk with Charlie on these beautiful days. Beautiful fall colors and contrasts.

Cutleaf Coneflower

Cutleaf Coneflower flower is still magnificent as it proceeds to making seeds. I walked past this flower, but this turned me around to take a photo.

Here are a couple shots from walks around our neighborhood. Charlie has learned to patiently wait for me to take photos of things that he has no interest in. As a balance, I stop and let him sniff something I have no interest in.

The wonderful part is that we are out there sharing our walk together… Lots going on while you are outside. Look for Fall Flower Beauty. It’s everywhere.

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Travels with Charlie: Get Some Whiffs of the New Fence

Tuesday, July 28, 2026

Story & Photos by Gordon Snyder

Have you been to Animal Acres lately? A new split rail fence has replaced the one that was falling down.

You can Get Some Whiffs of the New Fence as you walk around. Imagine how strong it smells to Charlie?

Looking northish toward the Demonstration Garden.

Turn around and notice the new fence along the path. This fence should last over 20 years in our climate.

Take a walk around the path and enjoy the views and smells on a nice summer day when you can.

This Western Flycatcher was in the Cabin kitchen window sill when Charlie and I came in from a warm walk.

Travels with Charlie: Trail Closure in Horizon View Park for Trail Repair

Thursday, July 9, 2026

Story & Photos by Gordon Snyder

The trail that connects NE 201st PL into Horizon View Park is CLOSED for trail repairs. Trail closed at NE 201st PL, so head on up the hill along the road to the park.

Closed sign along the main path circling Horizon View Park.

Those tripping hazards have been dug up already. This might be one of the spots for testing the "tree cells beneath the trail”

To follow how this works, visit Horizon View Park and walk around the park.

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Travels with Charlie: Trail Closure scheduled July 7-24, 2026 at Horizon View Park

Wednesday, July 8, 2026

Story and Photos by Gordon Snyder

The trail segment extending from NE 201st Street into Horizon View Park will be temporarily closed from July 7 through July 24, 2026 to allow for trail rehabilitation work. Work has begun and this section has been dug up.

NE 201st PL Asphalt Trail Entrance heads up the hill into the park. The Trail winds thru trees and undergrowth up to the courts and playgrounds. Wonderful walk up the hill.

Up the hill near the Basketball court, the Trail intersects the main path circling park.

Looking closer at the needed Trail repair because of growing root damage.

Mild Trail damage...

Dangerous tripping hazards are targeted. The Basketball court is up the Trail in the background.

Charlie wanting to get going instead of taking photos of the Trail.

This might be very important for future park projects. City staff will install tree cells beneath the trail to evaluate an innovative product designed to support healthy tree root growth while helping protect the trail from future root-related damage.

This pilot installation will provide valuable information for future trail and urban forestry projects. I’ll be interested in what is discovered...

Lots of neighborhood folks will be walking up the road rather taking this Trail. But when finished, the Trail will be safer and better soon…

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Gander on Lake Washington herding geese

We were walking along Lake Washington Shoreline when I noticed the Gander Goose on right was herding these geese along. A bit unusual.

An eagle was soaring around above them

Looking around, I spotted an Eagle soaring around. Hmmm. Was that why he was herding them?

They swam by a Crane standing peacefully.

Followed the swimming geese as we walked along the path, they swam by a Crane standing peacefully.

Notice the Gander is still herding...

Seems there is always a reward for getting outside and walking with my buddy Charlie.

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Finished rolling… What’d I miss? >>> Oh, Just a bunch of Hummers jetting around…

Story and Photos by Gordon Snyder

Flowering dogwood: Roadside Dogwood is smiling with raindrops.

Charlie doesn’t care about rain, he just wants to go do something. He is correct. It just stopped Raining, so we head outside.

Lady's Mantle. Even leaves are decorated with highlight rain drops… That dry track is a coalesced drop that headed downhill.

Between rains is a great time to get outside and look around.

Travels with Charlie: Animal Acres Park Demonstration Garden

Wednesday, May 27, 2026

Story and Photos by Gordon Snyder

Now’s the time to stop by and visit the Animal Acres Park Demonstration Garden NE 178th St and Brookside Blvd.

Just park in the spaces along the road and Ta-dah you are now by the park path.

This is a perfect time of year to visit.

Head north on the path and you will find the Animal Acres Demonstration Garden.

Charlie posing in front of the Demonstration Garden.

When you get a bit of free time, head to Animal Acres.

I love this sign… perfectly written.

This small park offers wonderful things to experience and sniff and view. The path is about 1/4 mile.

This charming sculpture is in Pfingst Animal Acres Park on Brookside Blvd in Lake Forest Park. The sculpture is by Georgia Gerber whose bronze animal sculptures can be seen all around Puget Sound. It was donated by the Lake Forest Park Garden Club (whose plant sale is May 16, 2026).

Walking along the path near the otters, and spotted this nature bouquet by an unknown park artist,
possibly part of the LFP Garden Club Otter Garden group.

Sweet bonus. Try to get outside and find your bonus.
