Upon arrival, firefighters found the home heavily involved, with significant fire showing. Entry was extremely difficult due to a large volume of personal belongings obstructing the doors and pathways inside the residence.
Firefighters located the sole resident, a single man in his 80s, and extricated him from the structure. Sadly, it was determined that he had passed away.

Due to the amount of material inside the home and the potential for hidden hot spots, a crew remained on scene—possibly through the night—to monitor conditions and prevent any flare-ups.

So sad! I wonder how long this gentleman may have been alone before the fire even started. Prayers for his difficult passing.
So much gratitude for all the first responders.
I can’t help but wonder how many others may be living in similar situations……and we don’t know? I’ve also struggled with how to find out-knock on a door of a very unkept yard/home risking intrusion of their privacy?
I know some churches do that….any other ideas? Thank you for sharing.
I live quite close by- this man had lived in the home his whole life, parents owned previously. Bad hoarding situation. I work with an organization that works to keep elderly folks in their homes independently (Northwest Neighbors Network- wonderful group that can always use more volunteers) and spoke to him about receiving services but he turned down assistance. It broke my heart and I still feel guilty that I didn't try to do more.
I hadn't seen lights on in the house for at least a year, so my assumption is this may have started from a propane heater or something. I am desperately hoping that he passed before the fire started, or that he passed out from smoke inhalation. I too am incredibly grateful to SFD. Incredibly sad situation that feels increasingly more common.
