Shorecrest lacrosse coach Adam Weybright dies unexpectedly

Thursday, April 23, 2026

Adam & Elizabeth Weybright
Students and athletes in northeast Seattle and Shoreline are shocked by the unexpected death of a popular teacher and coach.

Adam Weybright, a science teacher at Nathan Hale High School and lacrosse coach at Shorecrest High School, died suddenly last week.

Adam Weybright was 51 years old. His wife says he wore many hats: husband, dad, foster dad, lacrosse coach, to name a few.

He even worked as a scientist until he was 44 years old. Then he followed his heart and his wife into teaching.

“Thursday last week, he went in for a routine procedure, and the next morning he didn’t wake up,” said his wife, Elizabeth Weybright. He leaves three children behind.

Hundreds of people have been posting on social media, sharing in the family’s loss.

Elizabeth said she’s touched by the outpouring of support, “So many people reaching out and hearing their voices and learning how much of an impact he had on everyone.”

The King County Medical Examiner listed his cause of death as coronary artery disease.

A GoFundMe has been set up for Elizabeth and the children.

New bill protects grieving families from scam artists

Thursday, March 12, 2026

A bill requested by Attorney General Nick Brown strengthening probate law to protect grieving families from scam artists passed the Legislature with bipartisan support and now heads to the Governor’s desk for his signature.

AG Brown requested the bill in the wake of an investigation and lawsuit by the Attorney General’s Office against a group of people and their companies who took control of 213 deceased strangers’ estates and drained the assets without properly alerting heirs and courts.

HB 2445, sponsored by Rep. Adison Richards, D-Gig Harbor, strengthens state law governing the probate process for handling the estate of a person who dies without a will.

It sets clear rules for third parties seeking to become probate administrators, preventing strangers from seizing control of a deceased person’s property, siphoning the proceeds, and keeping grieving family members in the dark. The bill passed the state Senate unanimously.

Last year, the Attorney General’s Office sued and won against a group of people and their companies who took control of 213 deceased strangers’ estates and drained the assets without properly alerting heirs and courts.

The judge ordered John B. Elliott, Shanelle Sunde, and their companies to pay more than $7 million in penalties, restitution, legal fees, and costs.

The case exposed significant loopholes in Washington law that made it possible for the defendants to become court-appointed probate administrators for estates of people they didn’t know in counties where the deceased people had not lived.

Flag lowering and memorial for Washington State Patrol Trooper killed in line of duty

Saturday, December 27, 2025

Governor Bob Ferguson has ordered the flags to be lowered Saturday, December 27, 2025 for Washington State Trooper Tara-Marysa Guting, 29, Badge #720, who tragically lost her life in the line of duty on Friday, December 19, 2025.

I have no objection to agencies lowering the flags at the close of business on Friday, December 26, 2025. Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on Saturday, December 27, 2025, or first thing Monday morning, December 29th.

Trooper Guting was standing outside of her patrol car investigating a two-vehicle collision when she was struck just before 7:30pm on southbound State Route 509 near milepost 2, south of the Port of Tacoma. Individuals on scene rendered aid, but the trooper ultimately succumbed to her injuries.

She answered her final call Friday night, marking the 34th time in WSP’s 105-year history that the agency lost one of its own in line of duty.

The Washington State Patrol will be hosting an intimate, family-focused service with appropriate law enforcement honors on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Life Center Central Campus located at 1717 S. Union Ave, Tacoma, WA 98405.

Saturday’s service will not include a law enforcement processional, and has a focus on being surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues. As space may be limited, the event will be live streamed by TVW

Saturday, December 13, 2025

Experiencing the loss of a loved one can be one of the most challenging times in life. Grief is a deeply personal and often isolating experience, but you don’t have to navigate this journey alone.

Regardless of whether you lost a loved one recently or some time ago, there is a continuing feeling of loneliness, especially during the Christmas season.

If you're navigating through grief after losing someone dear, consider attending this special, one-time seminar in Shoreline on Sunday, December 14, 2025

All are welcome. This seminar will be held from 1:00 to 3:00pm.

The informal seminar includes experiences from other people who have experienced the holidays after their loved one’s death and who offer practical suggestions and reassurance.

These people share honestly about:
  • Being prepared for the surprising emotions that may hit over the holidays.
  • What to do about traditions and other coming changes.
  • How to handle holiday parties and invitations.
  • How to survive potentially awkward moments with other people.
  • Where to find comfort, strength, and hope in a seemingly hopeless time.
It is offered by a local Grief Share chapter, which is part of an international organization whose primary focus is helping those who may be grieving during the Holidays. Grief Share also has a series of get-togethers to help throughout the year.

“We have found that, besides even the materials used to help us in our grief journey, just being with others who have also experienced what we each have is helpful as we support each other in our grief journey”, stated Sherwood Sage, one of the group leaders.“

For more information, contact Sherwood Sage at 206-920-8933. There is no cost unless one wants to buy the book dealing with grief at this time of year, which goes with the seminar for only $12.00. Books will be available at the seminar.

Registration is also recommended. Reserve a place here  Registration is not required, but it helps plan seating arrangements.

This seminar and other Grief Share meetings are hosted at the Berean Bible Church located at 2345 North 185th Street, Shoreline WA 98133, at the corner of 1st Avenue NE and North 185th Street.

Anyone in the community is welcome to attend this seminar and any of the other meetings throughout the year.

Friday morning, December 5, 2025 at approximately 8:15am, Shoreline Fire crews responded to a residential structure fire in the 1800 block of N 205th St.

Meridian was blocked for hours with emergency vehicles

Upon arrival, firefighters found the home heavily involved, with significant fire showing. Entry was extremely difficult due to a large volume of personal belongings obstructing the doors and pathways inside the residence.

Firefighters located the sole resident, a single man in his 80s, and extricated him from the structure. Sadly, it was determined that he had passed away.

Crews remained to prevent any flare-ups

Due to the amount of material inside the home and the potential for hidden hot spots, a crew remained on scene—possibly through the night—to monitor conditions and prevent any flare-ups.

Fatal Crash in Bothell just over county line from Kenmore

Sunday, February 2, 2025

Site of fatality accident. Streets named NE are in King County; those named SW are in Snohomish county.

BOTHELL, Wash. – Around 1:59am Saturday, February 1, 2025 Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Collision Investigation Unit (CIU) detectives responded to a single-vehicle fatal crash in the 24200 block of Locust Way in the unincorporated Bothell area.

When deputies and fire personnel arrived, they determined the driver, a 16-year-old, deceased at the scene.

There were two passengers in the vehicle who were transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for evaluation.

During the investigation, detectives discovered the vehicle was traveling on the roadway northbound from the King County line.

At the county line the roadway changes name from 61st Ave NE to Locust Way in Snohomish County.

The vehicle failed to negotiate a sweeping right-hand turn, drifted off the west side of the roadway, then struck a chain-link fence.

Detectives learned the vehicle had possibly been involved in an eluding incident in King County with Lake Forest Park Police just before the collision.

CIU detectives will continue work to determine the cause of the crash.

Positive identification of the decedent, as well as cause and manner of death, will be determined by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.

Procession, memorial service on Friday January 10 for King County Metro Transit Operator Shawn Yim

Friday, January 10, 2025

By Jeff Switzer
King County Metro

King County Metro, community members, riders and transit agencies throughout the region will gather Friday, January 10, 2025 to celebrate and remember Transit Operator Shawn Yim, who was killed in the line of duty on December 18. (See article)

Remembrances begin with a 10am bus and transit vehicle procession through downtown Seattle followed by an 11am memorial event hosted by the Amalgamated Transit Union 587 at Lumen Field Event Center (also known as WAMU Theater).

With many Metro staff members attending these events to honor our fallen colleague and friend, there will be a very large number of bus trip cancellations and delays on Friday.

Riders are encouraged to sign up to receive transit alerts for their routes, however some real-time information in trip planning and transit tools, and transit alerts, may not be fully accurate during this period.

We recommend transit riders travel early, allow additional time and consider alternatives in the event of potential service interruptions.

Metro will provide as much bus service as possible. Water taxi routes and Sound Transit Link 1 Line and 2 Line services are expected to operate on regular schedules. Metro pass sales offices plan to provide regular service, while our customer service call center and lost and found services will be temporarily short-staffed while employees attend the memorial.

Memorial procession

A memorial procession of several dozen buses and transit vehicles from Metro and agencies around the region is scheduled to leave the SODO area at 10am. The procession will travel north on Fourth Avenue to Broad Street, Fifth Avenue North, Mercer Street, Sixth Avenue North and then south in the SR 99 tunnel to Lumen Field.

No personal vehicles will be included in the procession. Cross-street traffic will be temporarily held as the procession passes.

The public is encouraged to allow additional travel time due to temporary traffic delays.

Memorial service at Lumen Field’s WAMU Theater

A memorial service will be held at the Lumen Field Event Center (also known as WAMU Theater) from 11am to 1pm Friday, January 10. Doors open at 9:30am. Lumen Field is located at 800 Occidental Ave S, Seattle.

We appreciate the many condolences and all the expressions of support shared with us as we continue to mourn Yim’s death.

The safety of our riders, employees and community members

Safety continues to be our agency’s top priority. In recent years, Metro has more than doubled the number of transit security officers from 80 to over 170. We’re hiring more, while simultaneously recruiting for additional Metro Transit Police.

Metro is also redesigning our buses to strengthen the protections in place for our operators. We’re assessing and improving upon the operator partition that was installed on all buses in 2020 and 2021. And we have two pilot buses featuring different prototypes of cockpit-style doors for the operator’s compartment.

Additionally, we placed an order with a bus manufacturer for four test buses that will feature an ADA-compliant, European-style operator compartment design. This design has similarities to a light rail train, streetcar or subway. We are working with manufacturers to pursue other operator safety features, too.

More broadly, Metro and labor leaders are in active discussions with cities, law enforcement and other regional partners about actions that can be taken to improve the security challenges that exist in the communities and on the streets where Metro provides service.
