Shoreline Tree Code being updated - provide your thoughts
Tuesday, October 21, 2025
We are updating the City's Tree Code! The Tree Code holds the rules for trees on private property. These rules include many requirements around such things as:
Maintaining and/or removing existing trees.
Protecting and keeping trees during the redevelopment of property
The standard for how many trees a property owner needs to plant to replace any trees cut down.
How the City will enforce the code and what the penalties will be.The Tree Code Update will include reviewing and updating the tree code rules to follow urban forestry best practices and strengthen the City’s commitment to meeting its tree canopy and housing goals.

I would like to see the tree code less restrictive/expensive for private property. Id much rather see programs that instead focus on planting/maintaining trees on public ROW.
Is this the "gridlock" that a candidate for City Council is concerned about? I would also like consideration for people that need/want to remove trees from their property. I believe that a reasonable person can differentiate between a homeowner with limited resources that needs to save their roof, vs a developer that promises affordable housing if they can clear cut several lots and add a large percentage of hardscape. I understand that writing that into a code is something else.
When the three homes were built west of the entrance to the Richmond Beach Saltwater Park , our city lost a legacy sized madrone. ZERO replacement trees have been planted. This corrupt practice needs to be addressed.
All those trees that were coming down in shoreline was nonsense. You’re taking away our view. Keep shoreline beautiful and STOP TAKING OUR TREES
