Back by Popular Demand—A Rare Summer Stroll through The Highlands

On The Highlands garden tour

Our May Highlands Garden Tour sold out in just 20 minutes—with a waitlist 30 names long! Due to overwhelming enthusiasm, acclaimed gardener and author Tim Clemen has generously offered an encore tour of three spectacular, private estate gardens in The Highlands—lush, park-like spaces rarely open to the public.

Join us Saturday, July 12, 2025 for this very special fundraising event in support of Dunn Gardens. Guests will travel in comfort by motor coach from Dunn Gardens to The Highlands—no driving or parking required! After the tour, enjoy an al fresco lunch in the Gardens, surrounded by summer blooms and fellow garden enthusiasts.

Each of these estate gardens is lovingly maintained by Tim’s Gardening, LLC, and Tim himself will lead this unforgettable journey. Dunn Gardens is honored and grateful for his continued support of our mission.

Please note: The tour includes stairs, inclines, and uneven ground. Sturdy footwear is highly recommended.

Space is extremely limited and sure to go quickly—reserve your spot before it disappears like a summer breeze!

The Gardens we will visit..

The Robinson Estate:
The approach to this Olmsted-inspired landscape winds through towering trees and wide lawns, leading to a peaceful French Colonial home framed by hydrangeas and a riot of begonias. The gardens and hardscapes have recently been refreshed by the Nussbaum Group, blending timeless design with thoughtful, modern touches.

Torrance Estate:
Located on Highland Lane, the estate was designed by Charles Adams Platt and constructed in 1946. It was remodeled in 2005 when the Torrance’s reimagined the original gardens to include contemplative spaces and areas for entertaining.

We’ll enter the estate along a lane curving through soaring redwood trees to the pond at the center of the circle drive where goldfish the size of koi might surface under the fountain. The formal entry is garlanded by Japanese Wisteria that run the length of the slate roof line to the herb and rose gardens and garage.

Passing through the breezeway to the view side, we’ll witness the row of closely canopied London plane trees adjacent to the lawn, and the glorious views of the sea and mountains. We’ll conclude the stroll through the Buddha garden featuring mop-head hydrangeas, and pathways to the pool, the orchard, and back to the redwoods.

The Predmore Estate:
Designed by Arthur Erickson, this was originally the home of art patron, Virginia Bagley Wright, and is a landmark of Seattle Brutalism in architecture. The garden has been reimagined by landscape architect, Darwin Webb. It is a symphony of native plants, ornamentals, and heritage trees with territorial views and a lookout from the terrace and infinity pool to the sea.

Cantwell pushes back on Admin efforts to defund 14 Local Broadcasting Stations in WA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), ranking member of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation and senior member of the Senate Finance Committee, issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s rescission package that proposes to claw back $1.1 billion in funding already allocated by Congress for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

"President Trump's rescission package is another attempt to defund more than 1,500 local broadcasting stations across the country, including 14 in the State of Washington. As a result, millions of Americans—particularly in rural communities—will be cut off from local newsrooms, lifesaving emergency alerts, and programs they love.

"By clawing back our federal investment in non-partisan public broadcasting, the Trump Administration and Republicans are not only undermining laws on the books, but also the irreplaceable role public broadcasting plays in our communities."

These 14 stations in Washington state would be affected:

Public Television Stations
  • KCTS-TV (Seattle)
  • KSPS-TV (Spokane)
  • KWSU-TV (Pullman)
  • KBTC-TV (Tacoma)

Public Radio Stations
  • KUOW-FM (Seattle)
  • KEXP-FM (Seattle)
  • KNKX-FM (Tacoma)
  • KING-FM (Seattle)
  • KWSU-AM (Pullman)
  • KPBX-FM (Spokane)
  • KDNA-FM (Granger)
  • KNHC-FM (Seattle)
  • KBCS-FM (Bellevue)
  • KSVR-FM (Mount Vernon)

The average cost per American for public broadcasting is just $1.60 a year, and this funding supports 356 public TV stations and 1,190 public radio stations across the nation as of March 2025.

CPB support is absolutely crucial for rural communities, and provides vital news and information in all 50 states. Senator Cantwell and public broadcasting travel host Rick Steves condemned the Trump Administration for its assault on the Corporation for Public Broadcasting last month.

Milkweed in support of Monarch Butterflies

Milkweed in Shoreline Community Garden
After multiple attempts planting seeds and pods shipped to us from the midwest from the Monarch Butterfly Association and other locales, Twin Ponds Community Garden has finally been successful in establishing a decent patch of milkweed.

This project has been six years in the making and only became successful after securing seeds from Butchart Gardens in British Columbia, a testament to using native seeds accustomed to the Pacific NW climate.

Establishing a milkweed garden supports the life cycle of monarch butterflies. Our patch is small but thriving and we hope it makes a difference in our complicated world.

Author event at Third Place Books June 26, 2025: Seattle in the Great Depression

Bruce A. Ramsey
Seattle in the Great Depression

Thursday 6/26 at 7pm,
Third Place Books Lake Forest Park

Captured from Great Depression-era Seattle newspapers, this narrative history of the city's business, labor, and political life traces a turbulent decade that scarred a generation and defined years of policy and culture.

Underlying themes include the idea that the Depression was an economic consequence of World War I, intensified by reckless lending and restrictions on trade; that the New Deal helped people get through the Depression but could not end it; that the radical left made big gains in the 1930s but was ultimately rejected; and that, after the war, private economy revived but was not fundamentally altered.

Letter to the Editor: School levies help fill gaps created by insufficient state and federal funding

To the Editor:

Some may argue that public schools need to "live within their means" or manage their budgets more effectively, suggesting that waste and mismanagement are to blame for their financial struggles. If there were any evidence supporting this, one of the numerous routine third-party external audits would have found it.

What we do know is that utilities and insurance costs have skyrocketed, and while legally required to operate a school, they are severely underfunded.

Funding shortfalls are a statewide issue. When basic requirements are combined with special education and transportation needs, the funding shortfall for SSD is $10 million. Like families, school districts have bills to pay and operational costs to cover, which is why levy dollars are heavily relied upon. They can help cover these basic funding needs and help fill gaps created by insufficient state and federal funding.

There is significant evidence that, since the COVID-19 pandemic, students need more, not less, access to qualified school staff; yet, staffing is the last area available for reduction within the SSD budget.

For those dissatisfied with their public school experience, it is woefully misguided to believe that less money for adequate staffing and resources is the answer. Exploring alternative options may work for some, but not everyone in our community has the privilege or means to homeschool or pay for private education. Additionally, private schools are not legally required to meet the individual education needs of all students.

To achieve high educational standards and ensure that every child has access to safe, well-equipped classrooms and qualified teachers and staff, we must make significant funding investments in our schools. If you also believe that every child, regardless of their background, deserves the opportunity for a quality education, then vote YES for SSD No. 412 Proposition No. 1 by August 5th!

WSDOT to begin culvert replacement on Ballinger Way June 30, 2025

The culvert under Ballinger Way / SR 104 is adjacent to the Whizz Kids Academy.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has just announced that work will begin on a culvert replacement on Ballinger Way and 35th Ave NE on June 30, 2025.

Confusingly, this is the same intersection where the City of Lake Forest Park plans the L90 culvert replacement in 2026 or 2027 (see our previous article here)

There is a small culvert under 35th NE next to Ballinger Automotive.

WSDOT culvert project

According to Casey Conley, WSDOT Communications, construction is set to begin on a fish barrier removal project along Lyon Creek where it passes beneath State Route 104/Ballinger Way NE in Lake Forest Park.

Beginning Monday, June 30, 2025 contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation will replace an existing culvert that prevents fish from passing with a 24-foot-wide concrete structure near the SR 104 intersection with 35th Ave NE.

The project also will improve habitat within Lyon Creek, which flows from Snohomish County into Lake Washington through Lake Forest Park.

The new culvert structure will open 7.5 miles of potential upstream habitat to Chinook, coho, steelhead, sockeye, sea-run cutthroat and resident trout.

Closure details

Construction will happen up to seven days a week, with traffic control primarily occurring between 9pm and 5am.

Crews will perform site work and utility upgrades before installing the new culvert beneath SR 104, which will require extended road closures.

The following closures are planned during different stages of the project:
  • Overnight, single-lane closures on SR 104, 35th Ave NE and NE 185th St with flaggers alternating traffic in each direction.
  • A five-day closure along NE 185th St.
  • At least one overnight closure along 35th Ave NE near SR 104.
  • A 35-day closure along SR 104/Ballinger Way.

The dates for each extended closure have not been finalized, although the 35-day closure on SR 104/Ballinger Way is tentatively planned to start in early September.

What to expect

Signed detour routes will guide vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians around the road closures. Local access will be permitted during construction, although people will not be able to cross through the work zones.

King County Metro will relocate bus stops along SR 104/Ballinger Way during construction.

Johansen Construction Co. is the prime contractor for the $8.71 million project that, weather permitting, is expected to finish this fall. This work advances WSDOT’s efforts to comply with a U.S. District Court ruling requiring the agency to remove barriers to fish passage beneath state highways.

Shoreline College (Shoreline) has been awarded a $697,300 grant through the Supporting Student Veterans and Their Families initiative, funded by the King County Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy.

In partnership with the nonprofit Operation Military Family, Shoreline will launch the Veteran Success Through Education program, a two-year pilot effort to provide holistic support for veterans and their families, particularly those from marginalized communities.

The grant, which spans from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2027, will support culturally responsive case management, academic and financial assistance, and comprehensive wraparound services for eligible students.

“This is an opportunity to serve veterans who may be navigating the complexities of higher education without access to, or who have exceeded traditional VA benefits,” said Derek Levy, Dean of Student Support & Success at Shoreline.
“We’re excited to expand the services and supports we can offer to our veteran student community, both current and prospective, providing access and wraparound support in collaboration with Operation Military Family through the support of the King County Veterans, Seniors and Human Services Levy.”

The Veteran Success Through Education program will focus on serving veterans from underrepresented communities, including BIPOC, LGBTQ+ individuals, formerly incarcerated veterans, and those who have exhausted or are not eligible for VA benefits.

Operation Military Family will provide individualized case management, both remotely and on campus, and help connect Shoreline with veterans in need through an established network across the region.

Funding from the grant will enable Shoreline to assist with tuition, incidental expenses, and housing assistance for eligible students based on need. Participants will also have full access to Shoreline’s robust student support services, including dedicated Veterans services and academic advising.

“Through the Veteran Success Through Education program, we are honored to support those who have served our country, especially veterans from historically underserved communities, by providing the resources, guidance, and community they need to thrive in their academic and personal journeys,” said Ryan Aiello, Shoreline’s Vice President of Student Affairs.

The grant builds on Shoreline’s growing efforts to provide inclusive, equitable access to education and serves as a bridge for those who may be seeking a new path after military service.

Joshua Salois, Program Specialist II who works primarily with Shoreline’s Veterans population, had this to say about the grant.
"I’m excited for us to have the opportunity to support even more student Veterans and family members; especially folks coming from marginalized and often vulnerable populations.
"Even something seemingly small, like getting a professional certificate, can be so empowering and transformative, so for our program to have more ability to give that chance to those who may not have otherwise had it is just really amazing.”

As a pilot program, Veteran Success Through Education will run through June 2027 with the potential to inform and expand future support for veteran students across King County.

Spin Alley Bowling & Vault 177: Where Community, Craft, and Classic Fun Come Together in Shoreline

Family-Owned, Community-Driven, and Proudly Local Since 1960

When you walk through the doors of Spin Alley Bowling & Vault 177, you’re stepping into a vibrant blend of history, hospitality, and high-quality entertainment. This all-ages Shoreline staple is more than a bowling alley, it’s a reimagined, family-run community hub that combines state-of-the-art bowling with scratch-made food, craft cocktails, and a whole lot of heart.

With deep local roots and a commitment to serving everyone from longtime locals to first-time visitors, Spin Alley & Vault 177 offers a full-service experience that goes well beyond the lanes.

Q&A With Spin Alley Bowling & Vault 177

Q: How long have you been in business?

Joe Montero purchased Spin Alley Bowling in 2019 but Spin Alley opened its doors originally in the fall of 1960 as Arden Lanes. The location of our current restaurant and bar was a daycare center back in the day as bowling was so popular at that time, adults needed care for their children during league. We did a full, gut remodel starting in the early spring of 2020 and reopened as Vault 177 in the fall of 2020.

Arcade

Q: What service does your business provide for our community?

We are a full-service, all ages entertainment center with 16 lanes of state-of-the-art bowling machines, 2 LED pool tables, and an arcade with 7 modern Stern Pinball machines as well as a new NBA SuperStars Game, Photo Booth, Super Bikes and more!

We also have a full-service restaurant with craft beer and craft cocktails. Up to 34 beers and ciders on draft at any given moment and a full range of spirits and wine from your staple favorites to the rare and high-end.

Q: What do you love the most about Shoreline?
I am a native Shoreliner (is that a thing?) and both my business partner Joe Montero and I grew up in the North Seattle/Shoreline area. I went to St. Luke Parochial School then graduated from Shorewood High School and Joe grew up in Ballard attending Whitman Middle and Ingraham High School. I have two sons who attend Einstein Middle and Shorewood High School.

We love being able to serve the community we live in, where I am raising my two sons, and where we are from. After spending the bulk of my restaurant career in the downtown Seattle area, I jumped at the opportunity to rebrand and to breathe some life into a business that is a staple of this community and really Shoreline's only all-ages entertainment center.

The Richmond Beach neighborhood and the whole Shoreline community is a great place to live, work and play.

Shoreline has a unique juxtaposition of tons of wonderful parks, beautiful beach access walking distance from our business, wonderful schools, a thriving business community and lots of new growth.

Shoreline is a very special place we are proud to call home and to operate a local, family-owned, small business in.

Also worth noting, Joe’s father, Bill Montero, once lived in the “Boeing Hunting Cabin,” the first house in south Innis Arden when entering from the east. This cabin was famously used by the Boeing family when Innis Arden was a private game reserve. Bill Montero was instrumental in the planning and annexation of Shoreline and was very active in shaping this community we proudly serve today.

Q: What’s one thing you wish your customers knew about you but never ask?

Our kitchen is almost entirely scratch! What that means is that the vast majority of food we serve is prepared in house and hand-sourced by our staff.

No big food service trucks deliver our goods, we hand pick our produce, meats, and dairy several times per week.

Our pizza dough, sauce and special cheese blend is all made from scratch right here. We also make our own Alfredo and marinara as well as hand panko breading our chicken and mozzarella sticks!

We are not your typical "bowling alley food", although as a side note I have enjoyed lots of delicious food at other centers, nor are we a snack bar type of concept.

We are a real restaurant with a great food and beverage program and a truly amazing kitchen and bar staff who are the heart and soul of this business.

Come check out our delicious scratch chili made with carne asada, ground beef and our own special blend of veggies and spices or have a custom Old Fashioned. Our restaurant is as much a destination as our lanes.

Q: What has been your proudest moment in business so far?
We are proud to have survived opening a new restaurant in 2020, a challenging feat to say the least, and to being able to grow each year. During Covid, 25% of bowling alleys nationwide shut their doors never to reopen. We are proud to have weathered the storm and to build and improve our center since those tough times.

Cosmic Aqua Bowling Lanes

In the summer of 2023, we completed the largest renovation this building has seen since opening its doors and we replaced our original 1960 Brunswick machines with Qubica AMF Edge FreeFall Pinsetters, DuraBowl Automatic Bumpers and Center Punch Deck Lighting!

So what does all the fancy bowling speak mean to our customers? EDGE Free-Fall is the industry’s fastest cycling machine on average. League players like this speed and the ability to finish sooner and we can serve more customers during peak periods.

This system not only returns balls quickly and reliably, but its ball-wiper cloth removes excess lane oil from the ball at the same time. The industry’s most efficient pin handling system spots and re-spots pins with amazing precision. This combined with Center Punch dynamic pin lighting and automatic DuraBowl Bumpers that can be raised and lowered per bowler will make your bowling experience at Spin Alley Bowling a whole new level of fun!

Q: How does your business support or give back to the local community?
Spin Alley Bowling & Vault 177 are dedicated to supporting our local community from schools to our local Richmond Beach Community Association. We are dedicated to our donation program for local schools both public and private for their fundraising efforts.

We support ALL youth sports from Shorewood Football and Basketball to Shoreline Lacrosse to Shoreline Little League. We have three City of Seattle Girls Varsity Bowling Teams that call our center home for practices including Nathan Hale, Ingraham, and Ballard. We would love to bring Girls Varsity Bowling back to the Shoreline School District and WesCo and support that however we can.

Updated arcade games

We also donate our time and our location to the RBCA's Annual Oktoberfest each year and sponsor the RBCA Strawberry Fest annually as well. We want to not just operate a business here, we want to support this community and to provide a safe, fun gathering place for schools, churches, families, students, the senior community, and everyone in Shoreline and beyond.
