Weekend and seven-day eastbound lane closures in Kenmore

Friday, October 30, 2026

When
  • Weekend lane closures: 6pm Nov. 6 through 6am Nov. 9.
  • Weekday bus-only lane closure hours: 6am Nov. 9 through 6am Nov. 16.
  • Other roadway work hours: Monday – Friday, 9am – 3pm
Where
  • SR 522 (NE Bothell Way) between 60th Ave NE and 73rd Ave NE.

As early as Friday, November 6, 2026 Sound Transit will temporarily close the eastbound bus-only lane and one eastbound general traffic lane on SR 522 (NE Bothell Way) between 60th Ave NE and 73rd Ave NE.

Crews need these temporary closures to pour and cure the concrete bus pads that Stride buses will stop on when picking up and dropping off riders. This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled to a later date.

Crews will temporarily close the eastbound bus-only lane and one eastbound general traffic lane on Friday, Nov. 6 at 6pm to prepare for weekend concrete bus pad pours at Stride stations. After the concrete bus pads are poured, crews will remove the eastbound general lane closure around work areas. The eastbound bus-only lane will remain closed through 6am Monday, Nov. 16 to prevent cars and buses from driving over the concrete bus pads while they harden.

Traffic patterns will change during weekend construction. Buses will merge into general-purpose traffic lanes to bypass the work. Temporary bus stops will remain accessible. Drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians should follow posted signs and plan for extra travel time.

Riders and drivers will still be able to make right turns in and out of businesses and residences on SR 522 (NE Bothell Way) between 61st Ave NE and 73rd Ave NE. All businesses and residences will remain open and accessible.

Freeway closures announced with humor (and horror) from WSDOT

Thursday, October 29, 2026

Now you have to watch the reel of zombie freeway workers

Something evil’s lurking in the dark... IT’S A HALLOWEEN WEEKEND FULL CLOSURE OF NORTHBOUND I-5 IN SEATTLE (and SB I-405 in Bothell).

BUT! Before you run for your life, there’s a killer plot twist. The reason we’re closing the road is so crews can remove the Revive I-5: Ship Canal Bridge work zone.

And when Monday morning comes, something will rise from the dead... ALL FOUR NORTHBOUND LANES will be open across the bridge AND express lanes will return to normal operations.

The details:
  • NB I-5 will close from I-90 to Northeast 45th Street from 11:59 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, to 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2. Adjacent ramps and lanes will start to close as early as 9 p.m. Friday.
  • We’ll start work on the southbound lanes in early 2027, but let’s - ah - cross that bridge when we get there. (Had to do it).
But wait. There’s more.
  • We’ll also be closing all lanes of SB I-405 in Bothell from SR 527 to SR 522 from 10 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Monday. A detour will be in place, and adjacent ramps also will close. This is to widen I-405 through Bothell and build a new bus rapid transit station in the center of the freeway.
Expect delays this weekend and adjust your routes if you’re able. We know you’ll close your eyes and hope that this is just imagination, but this is a chiller, thriller weekend. Let’s get through it together, boys and ghouls

Innis Arden Way road closure extended to November 30, 2026

This photo, taken in August, shows the full depth of the excavation we completed.

Shoreline is replacing the culvert below NW Innis Arden Way for the Boeing Creek Culvert Replacement Project (Hidden Lake Phase II).

This work will help minimize flood and erosion risks in the area. It will also help remove barriers to future fish passage.

NW Innis Arden Way is fully closed between NW 166th Street and the entrance of Shoreview Park. We had planned to reopen the road by October 31. While we have made considerable progress on the work in this area, our contractor needs extra time to rebuild the roadway and have Seattle Public Utilities connect the water lines.

The road closure will now last until November 30.

We know that construction and road closures are disruptive to project neighbors and everyone who travels through the area. We appreciate your continued patience as we complete this work and reopen the road safely.

After the road has reopened, we may still need to temporarily close single lanes of traffic during work hours. Flaggers will be present to guide traffic through the work area.

This photo, taken in September, shows the size of the culvert we placed. This culvert is the largest size available. Photo courtesy City of Shoreline
Project Progress

Since the road closure began in June, we have fully excavated the existing roadway and placed the new culvert and stream bed.

We’re currently working to backfill over the culvert, continue improving the stream bed, and plant trees and other vegetation.

Construction resumes October 28, 2026 near SR 104 Lyon Creek fish passage site

Construction will resume Wednesday, October 28, 2026 near the SR 104 Lyon Creek fish passage site for removal of a buried storage tank. Construction will happen from 7am to 3:30pm for about five weekdays. Work will not happen overnight or during weekends.

During working hours, one lane of NE 185th Street will close at the intersection of SR 104. Signed detours will guide people around the closure.

Underground tank removal

During this project, our contractor found a buried fuel storage tank on site that was not previously identified in plans. The tank was discovered midway through construction, after known fuel tanks had already been safely removed.

In recent months, we have worked with the property owner and developed a plan to remove the tank, which is located near the intersection of NE 185th Street and 35th Avenue NE. This storage tank, which is believed to be empty, must be removed.

Our contractor will use industry best practices to remove this final tank and any potentially contaminated soils nearby. Contaminated soils removed from the work zone during tank removal will be disposed of at authorized facilities. Crews will fill around the tank with clean soils and add landscaping before finalizing construction.

LFP Stewardship Foundation: Bus Rapid Transit construction is coming to Lake Forest Park

Wednesday, September 30, 2026

From the LFP Stewardship Foundation

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) construction on SR 522/Bothell Way will be the largest and most impactful project that Lake Forest Park (LFP) has experienced in decades. Sound Transit (ST) has begun to apply for permits and construction is anticipated to begin next summer. It is critical that our community be informed about permanent changes and major impacts that the BRT will bring to LFP neighborhoods and what lies ahead.

What do we know so far? According to city staff and available documentation:

Construction is expected to start in the summer of 2027 and will last approximately 20 months. This will coincide with construction of the SR 104 round-about, which is expected to be completed in October or November 2027.

The BRT corridor will run on SR 522/Bothell Way NE for about 1.5 miles starting at SR 323/NE 145th Street. An estimated 95,000 tons of dirt and debris will be excavated and at least 109 tax parcels are affected, either by permanent or temporary takings.

The project will require significant onsite space for its base of operations, storage and maintenance of large equipment, materials and vehicles and facilities (including parking) for its workforce, among other functions.

Tree Removal Overview

Approximately 347 trees are proposed for removal, including 47 landmark trees and 300 significant trees. These trees represent an estimated canopy of 139,828 square feet and are predominantly native species, including Douglas fir, western red cedar, western hemlock, and bigleaf maple.

Tree Inventory Basis and Site Impacts.

The tree category designations are based on tree inventories conducted between 2020 and 2023. As a result, some trees may have grown and now exceed their assigned category. Of the trees proposed for removal, 177 are located within erosion hazard or steep slope areas, and 17 occur within stream or wetland buffers.

Tree Replanting and Ecological Implications
.

Sound Transit proposes planting 223 small replacement trees in the corridor right-of-way, restoring an estimated 80,996 square feet of canopy. Because these species are generally non-native, smaller-canopied, shallower-rooted, and shorter-lived than the trees removed, they are unlikely to provide equivalent ecological or monetary value.

Native replanting appears limited to Animal Acres to address the loss of 17 buffer trees. The City’s 2023 Urban Forest Ecosystem Services and Values Report used i-Tree Eco to quantify benefits such as pollution reduction, cooling, stormwater control, wildlife habitat, carbon sequestration and storage, noise buffering, economic value, and public health. It remains unclear whether Sound Transit’s mitigation fully compensates the community for these lost ecosystem services.

Remaining Mitigation Requirement.

After proposed ROW replanting, a deficit of 120 trees and 58,832 square feet of canopy would remain.Sound Transit proposes to mitigate this remaining loss through an off-site planting program, or planting in LFP designated ROW corridor replanting areas. Any remaining deficits would be mitigated by paying replanting fees to the City's tree fund.

The project will cross or interact with principal sensitive areas in our city, including Bsche’tla Creek and the NE 153rd ravine; McAleer and Lyon Creeks; and a portion of the Burke-Gilman trail. It directly intersects multiple sensitive natural systems in Lake Forest Park, including Lake Washington drainage routes; steep-slope and landslide-hazard zones; liquefaction-prone soils; shallow groundwater; and locations requiring retaining walls, structural foundations, drainage modifications, and other geotechnically complex work.

Information about ST3 BRT is available on the City’s website. The site includes thousands of pages of technical documents, plans, and permit materials that can be challenging and time-consuming for residents to interpret. To date, there are no public meetings scheduled regarding the project.

How can you help?

We will continue seeking information about this major project, but we are an all-volunteer nonprofit with limited time and resources. Please support our community by contacting our elected officials and city staff with questions and concerns, sharing updates with neighbors, and encouraging transparent public communication throughout the process.

Below are some suggestions for key questions regarding the BRT:
  • How will the City inform and update the public throughout construction?
  • Will tree replanting mitigation be required within Lake Forest Park to preserve local canopy function, or will tree banking be allowed outside of city limits?
  • Will the City account for the ecosystem services lost by removing mature native trees when determining replanting requirements or calculating fee-in-lieu payments? If not, how will the City ensure that mitigation adequately compensates for the loss of benefits such as carbon storage, stormwater management, cooling, air-quality improvement, sound buffering and wildlife habitat?
  • Will the City consult an environmental economist to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed mitigation?
  • When will tree removals begin, and how will they be sited and conducted?
  • What is the City’s role throughout the project? Will it have input and on-going consultations with ST?
  • Where will the contractors’ bases of operations be located? On which days and during what hours will construction occur?
  • What is the City’s traffic plan for these bases and construction areas? Will BRT construction and rerouting coincide with other major construction in the area, including the waterfront park, roundabout on 40th Place NE and various culvert improvements?
  • Has a comprehensive plan for coordination of overlapping projects been established?
Here’s how to reach City staff and elected officials to ask questions or express your concerns or ideas:

Sears Demolition 9-1-2026

Wednesday, September 2, 2026

Drone Photos by David Carlos

The walls continue to come down from the Aurora Sears building, along with sections of the roof.

I'm impressed with how efficient they are at clearing the debris. And now I see that they are sorting at least some of it.

The section at the 160th side of the building is gone. Until David started documenting the demolition I had no idea that there was a level underneath the back parking area.

What did they use all the underground space for?

Two new buildings by the Westminster entrance hold several small businesses. Triumph Chicken occupies the building in the far back corner of the property. Magpie Thrift is in the large building most recently housing the Salvation Army thrift store. Central Market and the small business in the wing are unchanged.

Chipotle Mexican Grill's blue roof is visible at lower left. The building showing at the bottom of the photo is part of a block of buildings on land with different ownership.

When did that nice, straight road in front of Sears go in? The only road I recall is the secret passageway curving down through the trees - still visible next to Westminster Way.

To the right, plastic covers large mounds of dirt.

Traffic Alert – 40th Pl NE Closure

This is a reminder that, due to construction work, 40th Pl NE is currently closed to southbound traffic from NE 185th St.
Road closure in Lake Forest Park

As a reminder, the City's SR 104 Roundabout project began a local detour on Monday August 17, 2026.  As such, for approximately the next three months, southbound 40th Place NE is closed at SR 104 Ballinger Way NE.

A number of signs have been posted throughout the corridor directing traffic northbound to the 35th Avenue NE arterial for southbound travel onto SR 104.

Please be mindful of this closure and do not attempt to access SR 104 via 40th Place NE.  Two-way circulation is maintained southbound all the way to the work zone for local residents, but no turnaround is available.

We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience and cooperation while this work is completed.

Sears demolition continues

Sunday, August 16, 2026

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by David Carlos

Piles of rubble surround the Sears building in Shoreline Place as the gutting of the interior continues.

Crews are doing a professional job, cleaning up as they go.

I was told a long time ago that the underground spaces went all the way back to the extension wing which has the blue fronts in the photo. But it's a little shocking to see how huge the building actually is. I wonder what they did will all that extra space.

Shoreline Fire used the lower level to train firefighters to fight fires in confined spaces.

The building in the back is the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The extension in the front of the photo was the auto shop. The entry door on the other side led into a lower level where I remember a photo studio. I also remember a wall with a locked door just beyond it. Employees frequently went into the area beyond the door. Tire sales were near the entrance and I believe the retail section on the other side had clothing. But it was nowhere as big as the size of the building would indicate.

I'm realizing now that I spent very little time shopping here. I have been in the main retail level on the top floor, using the entrance near the corner near Town & Country. And I have spent some time in the area accessed from the back, usually deserted parking lot. I had no idea there was anything but solid earth underneath. Those two sections of the store probably connected but I never checked it out.

I wonder what they will do with all the chunks of concrete? They are bristling with rebar so not useful for building retaining walls.

It will be interesting to see the building plans.

The old Sears building at Shoreline Place: Chipping away at the past

Monday, August 10, 2026

Story & Photos by David Carlos

The building dates back to 1967, when Sears opened there, and remained until 2018.

The City of Shoreline says pre-demolition work and abatement are now underway. Once the demolition permit is issued, tearing the building down is expected to take about six months.

The footprint will eventually become a large mixed-use residential development, with apartments and retail/commercial space at street level, along with public open spaces.

We said goodbye to this Sears a long time ago. But the memories remain: popcorn and butter toffee peanuts, Craftsman tools, Free Spirit bicycles, and Toughskins jeans.

What are your irreplaceable Sears memories?
