New book by Shoreline native teaches basics of circuits, circuit components, and electronics

Friday, July 28, 2023

Using fun, hands-on projects, learn what a circuit is and how it works!

This book uses a common tool in electronics, the breadboard, to build your way to an understanding of circuits, circuit components, and the basics of computers.

You'll master current, voltage, and resistance.

With that you can control outputs like lights and motors as well as inputs like switches and sensors.

You'll also discover the difference between analog and digital electrical signals while studying both electricity and computers.

Dabble in electrical engineering, whether you are interested in building things with electronics or learning to program simple, physical systems.

A breadboard
Build your own electronic projects to learn how electronics work. And also how computers store information and process requests.

You'll work with simple, low-cost tools like conductive tape before developing up to working with breadboards and discovering the components to build more complex systems.

With Beginning Breadboarding, makers of all ages and backgrounds can learn to build real-life physical computing systems and projects. Have fun building something with tangible results while learning all the theory you need to make new projects of your own!

Jennifer Fox, author, engineer, maker, educator
What You'll Learn

Using Screen Time to Support Creative Hobbies - From Woodwork to Threadwork, Online Sources Help Your Projects from Idea Phase to Global Sharing

Wednesday, February 2, 2-3pm
For adults. Presented by Bridget of Gentle Tech Help via the King County Library System (KCLS)

Artists, hobbyists and makers of all types are often unaware of the online resources available to enrich and support their craft. Especially during the cold, dark winter, spending screen time in the right places to gather ideas, get inspired and acquire tools can start your next project off on a strong footing.

Additionally, learn how taking and using the right kinds of photos can help tell the story of your work, Seriously, people don’t know what it takes to make what you make unless they can see it! We’ll end with info about how to share that work online locally or globally and a brief dip into selling online.

Please register

You will be emailed a link no later than one hour before the program start time. If you do not see an email, check your Junk or Spam folder.

Closed captioning is available for online events. Captioning is auto-generated. Reasonable accommodation for people with disabilities is available by request for all events. Contact the library at least seven days before the event if you need accommodation. Send your request to access@kcls.org.

Calling all crafters - come make fiber welcome mats for refugee families

Wednesday, February 27, 2019

Calling all crafters, fiber artists, and people with big hearts.

We invite you to come to Third Place Commons in Lake Forest Park this Saturday, March 2, from 10am to 1pm to help make welcome mats which will be donated to the International Rescue Committee to be distributed to new refugee families in the Greater Seattle area.

We take gently used fabric, usually unused yardage, or top sheets, duvet covers, or tablecloths, and create 'yarn' by cutting it into strips (we'll show you how).

Then crochet or knit it into a 'rag rug' (we have patterns or can demonstrate) which gets tagged with a title and the first name of the maker and delivered to the IRC.

We have supplies, including fabric, yarn, and crochet hooks. Weavers and latch-hook rug makers are invited to participate as well.

For more information, check out our website or contact Luanne Brown

Third Place Commons, Saturday, March 2, 2019, 10am to 1pm.
