Shop Local: Sky Nursery has a gift shop - and a coffee shop - and a Maker's Market

Saturday, November 25, 2023

By Diane Hettrick

Sky Nursery has greenhouses and outdoor space full of plants, of course, but they also have a year round gift shop inside with gifts for gardeners. House plants make good gifts and the staff are very knowledgeable.

I once walked in to the indoor plant section and said "I need four different plants for people whose idea of plant care is to dump the remains of their cold coffee in the dirt." The staff person was startled for a moment but then came up with four great selections.

Their Christmas ornaments are varied and they often have entertainment during December. And Christmas trees.

They are located between Aurora and Midvale, just north of 185th.

Saturday, December 2, 2023 they have tool sharpening for $4 cash only from 10am to 2pm, music from Strum ukulele band from 1-2pm, and Heartful Rootz Maker's Market. Keep an eye on their events page.

Heartful Rootz Maker's Market

December 2nd & 3rd 10am-4pm

Shop over 30 vendors offering handmade goodies from local Black, Indigenous and People of the Global Majority artists.

As a special treat, join us each day at 12pm & 2pm for story shares from exceptional featured artists. This is a great opportunity to learn more about their work, stories and motivations, and understand how much it takes to create something truly beautiful by hand.

Heartful Rootz is proud to support both experienced and up-and-coming vendors and creatives.

Sky Nursery class: Carnivorous plants are the secret weapon of indoor gardening

Friday, October 7, 2022

Carnivorous plants are the secret weapon of indoor gardening.

Their ravenous tendencies can be used to actually reduce fungus gnats in your home (or greenhouse), all while offering a striking aesthetic you just can't get with other plants.

Wanna know how to care for these unique little monsters?

Join Sky's very own Charles Young for a free in-person class October 22, 2022 from 12-1pm.

Accompanied by a huge selection of 'carnies,' he'll be taking you through how to help them thrive, whether they're tucked into a bog terrarium or not.

Expect a little bit of Halloween silliness, a lot of information, and a chance to ask all your questions.

If you plan to attend, there is no limit on space, but we thank you for taking the time to RSVP here: https://fb.me/e/rGrbc0Pfl

Sunday February 9, 2020 from 1pm – 2:30pm - Terrarium Seminar with Hannah Palm

Learn how to put together a terrarium!

The process starts with figuring out what type is right for your situation: an open one filled with succulents for a sunny location, or the traditional globe or semi-enclosed one, filled with ferns, foliage and other low-light plants.

Hannah will go over how to determine which is best for you, how to put together the layers of gravel, soil, and charcoal for each, and how to choose and arrange your plants and decorative accents.

Finally, she’ll discuss how to care for your terrarium once you’ve made it!

Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Sky Nursery from 10:00am – 3:00pm

Everything’s Coming Up Roses! Seattle Rose Society

Roses are the very emblem of romance and beauty, and they perform brilliantly here in the mild climate of the Northwest when you meet their basic needs.

Join rosarians from the Seattle Rose Society for a full day of rose mania. An affiliate of the American Rose Society, the Seattle Rose Society has been promoting — and growing — roses here since 1913!
Among other activities, the Rose Society helped plan the Woodland Park Zoo Rose Garden (now a nationally recognized site with over 300 varieties), and every June they hold a Rose Show in which local rosarians and amateurs can compete.

The Rose Society will hold seminars on specific aspects of rose growing, and experts will be available to share their enthusiasm throughout the day.

Come for one of the seminars, or come for the full day!

  • 10am - Rose Pruning: Roses require yearly pruning to perform their best. Learn the basics for each kind of rose.
  • 11am - Rose Selection: Over a century’s experience goes into these top picks for the Northwest.
  • 1pm - Planting, Mulching, Feeding, and Fertilizing: Roses reward proper care with lavish blooms!
  • 2pm - Disease Control: Learn how to prevent problems, and the gentlest treatment options.

Odd Plant show is a prickly delight

Shopping for succulents at the Odd Plant Show

Photos by Wayne Pridemore

The Cascade Cactus and Succulent Society of Washington held its Annual Sale and Show at Sky Nursery in Shoreline on September 14 and 15.

It has been called the "Odd Plant Sale" although they may be trying to mainstream. This photo doesn't help their case.

It takes just the right space for a beauty like this.

There were plants of all sized and shapes. These plants are more living room sized.

Sergii Druzkin and daughters were at the activity table. Dariia is a 2nd grader at Ridgecrest and Nika attends kindergarten at Ridgecrest.

New this year was a learning activity on Sunday for children age 10 and under. The activity taught children about succulents, how to pot one and provided them with instructions for care. There were other activities, such as coloring. Nika is very proud of her art work.

Richmond Beach resident Peter Liekkio

An expanded list of over 30 vendors displayed their plants, sold them, and taught people how to care for them.

North City resident Karen Summers was cashiering.

North City resident Karen Summers was at the cashier table. She is an active member of the Society and helped with the sale and show.

The show is held every year at Sky. If you missed it this year, you'll get another chance next fall.
