Designing the Northwest Garden - free class from North City Water September 18, 2024

Wednesday, August 21, 2024

Whether you are starting with a bare yard or trying to give your existing landscape a northwest vibe, this class has all sorts of advice and tips for you.

Designing the Northwest Garden
Wednesday, September 18, 2024
6:30–8:00 pm
at North City Water District
1519 NE 177th Street in Shoreline
FREE

Northwest native plants—ranging from vine maple, flowering currants, oregon grape, and salal, to sword ferns, oxalis, and wild strawberries—require less care and are amazing for attracting wildlife, birds, and pollinators. This class will focus on sustainable landscapes that are people and wildlife friendly, and help you learn how to "plan it before you plant it."

Class is free, but you must register to attend.

Contact in advance by email to customerservice@northcitywater.org or call the office at 206-362-8100.

About The Presenter

Greg Rabourn’s passion for native plants collided with his dislike of mowing many years ago. He has been practicing and promoting native plant and low maintenance landscaping techniques ever since.

Greg was a weekly guest for the Greendays Gardening Panel, on KUOW, 94.9 FM. He was also co-host of KCTV's natural yard care TV show.

Greg currently works for King County's Department of Natural Resources and Parks as a Community Stewardship Specialist and Project Program Manager for Watershed Stewardship.

Shoreline Profit Mastery offers business owners financial knowledge

Sunday, August 4, 2024

SHORELINE, WA.—The Washington Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in partnership with the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce is hosting a three-day Profit Mastery course August 27-29, 2024.

The course is for business owners who want to improve their ability to make data-driven decisions about their business growth.

"Most solo business owners don’t have a business degree or financial training, so staying viable is a big challenge,” said Shoreline Chamber of Commerce President Lara Grauer.
“Our members told us that business finance is high on their list to learn about, so we’re thrilled to partner with the Washington SBDC and bring Profit Mastery to Shoreline!"

Profit Mastery is an internationally acclaimed financial management program that has been helping business owners and financial managers overcome common business problems and improve performance for more than 40 years.

In partnership with the Profit Mastery organization, the Washington SBDC is able to offer this course at a steep discount for workshop participants.

“The training provides an understanding of what your business numbers are telling you, and how to use that information to plan for pricing, profitability, financing, growing sales, positive cash, and business valuation,” said Jennifer Shelton, the SBDC advisor in Shoreline.

Course participants will learn to use the Profit Mastery system of analysis to understand their financial position, evaluate cost patterns, set effective prices, leverage financial resources and plan for growth or succession.

Ron Nielsen, an experienced entrepreneur and an SBDC advisor for more than 20 years, will be facilitating the course. United Business Bank will be providing light refreshments.

Feedback from past participants includes testimonials such as this:

“This is a very detailed and highly informative course addressing the most pressing questions and most confusing issues facing small business owners today. Worth every penny and every minute. Ron did a great job of helping the individuals in the group grasp the material in a meaningful way.”

The workshop is scheduled for 8am to 2:30pm, August 27, 28 and 29 at the Seattle Scottish Rite, 1207 N 152nd St, Shoreline WA 98133.

A main reason this workshop (done twice a year) is so successful is because of Jenny Shin, King County EMS Program Manager, and Jen Blackwood’s commitment to expanding the interest for the communities we serve to be served by people like them!

Workshop participants spend a weekend exploring the world of fire and EMS, learning CPR and firefighting tasks, watching demonstrations and participating in hands-on training. Participants hear from women from various agencies around the county during discussion panels.

Workshops are held biannually at designated locations throughout King County. Over 225 women from the region have participated in past workshops, some of whom are now working full-time in this career. Interest in the workshop was high with registration filling quickly.

Shoreline is hosting this spring workshop. The Water-Friendly Garden - class April 10, 2024

Tuesday, April 2, 2024

Come learn how to grow healthy living soils for drought resistance and happy plants!

Wednesday, April 10, 2024
6:30–8:00 pm
at North City Water District
1519 NE 177th Street in Shoreline
Click for directions >

Water plays a critical role in how our gardens grow, particularly in the dry summers. Water is also critical for living soil organisms to stay active and abundant, the true foundation of healthy gardens and a living planet.

The steps we take to grow healthy living soils are the same steps we take to mitigate and even help our gardens thrive during dry conditions. By starting with growing healthy soil, any gardener can drought-proof their garden to grow more with less water.

Learn how to plant a water friendly garden, catch and keep the water that’s available, and maximize the benefits of organic matter to grow healthy living soil and plants all year round.

Class is free, but you must register to attend.

She has worked on farms, with urban gardens, in environmental restoration, in agro-ecological research, and for Oregon State University Extension Small Farms Program.

With twenty years of hands-on practical experience and the latest research in soil health to back her up, she shares the simple truth that to grow more, we need to do less.

Based in Tacoma, Washington, Ea spends her time digging in community gardens, enjoying the year-round harvest of a living soil, and empowering others to bring soil to life, wherever they are.
