Jazz Walk - photos and survey

Friday, August 21, 2026

Booths, food, people, all to the tune of lively jazz music

By Diane Hettrick

This year's Jazz Walk was a wonderful combination of street scene and intimate indoor settings. Thanks to Rod Dembowski and the City of Shoreline, five blocks of 15th NE in the North City Business District were pedestrian only for the night.

Shear Jazz at the Frank Lumber outdoor venue

Foot Stompers - next to the Rotary Beer Garden

The street was full of music with Foot Stompers and Shear Jazz playing sets at a venue created from a parking lot at Frank Lumber annex.

Beer drinkers could sit inside the fence and sip a cool brew from the Rotary Clubs of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

In line at the food trucks

By far the biggest crowds were in the lines for the food trucks. Jazz Bites were available at street stations. Mexican Food and Jeremy's Chicken at the trucks. Cookie dough treats in another food truck.

Face painting - wearable art

A Creative in action

Kids had a good time creating art or wearing art from the very popular face painting set up. Some just used chalk to make street art.

Ranger Rearranger at Sodam Chicken

Inside venues were quiet as people absorbed the sounds. Several places had drinks and food. Others were just for the performances.

Pearl Django

Perennial favorite Pearl Django played at the North City Bistro.

It was far better to have a street closure than a pandemic closure. This was possibly the most popular Jazz Walk to date.

Plan on next year and we'll all do it again.

And speaking of next year, help the planners by taking this survey, which will be open for just a few days.

It doesn't take more than a minute or two: SURVEY

Everything to know about Jazz Walk August 11, 2026 - street festival, food, music indoor and out

Saturday, July 25, 2026

North City’s favorite jazz festival is back for its 18th year! This year's event features a vibrant five-block-long street scene buzzing with food trucks, family-friendly fun, and local businesses, two free outdoor stages flanked by beer and wine gardens, and five indoor venues where you can enjoy everything from Django-inspired gypsy jazz, and rootsy Americana, to smoky bluesy jazz, and gospel-infused grooves.

There's something for everyone!

Details:
Tuesday August 11, 2026 - five blocks of 15th NE from 175th NE to 180th NE

6:00 pm - The street festival opens with community organizations and local businesses, face-painting and games for kids, and activities for the whole family;

- Two beer and wine gardens next to the free outdoor stages start pouring beverages donated by Georgetown Brewing, Fremont Brewing, and Vault 177—with all proceeds going to local community projects coordinated by Shoreline Rotary and Lake Forest Park Rotary;

- Five indoor (ticketed) music venues begin serving special "Jazz Bites" food and/or beverages;

- Six food trucks begin offering barbecue, Mexican fare, gourmet hot dogs, Mediterranean cuisine, grilled and smoked chicken, vegan options, and dessert ice cream and cookie dough.

6:30 pm
- Bands begin playing at the two free outdoor stages, located at either end of the 'Walk in the parking lots of Frank Lumber "The Door Store", and Frank Lumber Bargain Barn.

7:00 pm - Bands begin playing at the five indoor venues: North City Bistro, North City Water District, North City Lounge, Sodam Chicken, and Bethel Lutheran Church. These venues require a wristband for entry.

Music:

- Each stage / venue features the same jazz musician / band all night long.
- All bands play three sets: the first two are 45 minutes long; the final set is 60 minutes long, with a 15 minute break between sets.
- Outdoor bands include The Foot Stompers, and Shear Jazz with Keith McClelland (one of the Jazz Walk's original founders).
- Indoor bands include Pearl Django, Greta Matassa, Angela Petrucci, Ranger and the Rearrangers, and the Elnah Jordan Experience.

Tickets:

- Online tickets are $30 at EventBrite; these must be exchanged for an entry wristband on the night of the event.
- Entry wristbands will soon be available at six locations so you can avoid having to exchange your ticket on the night of the event.
- Seating is limited, and most attendees purchase tickets in advance, so it's best not to wait until the day of the event (when the ticket price also goes up).

Backroads Tour to present final tour date in Seattle on July 4 at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard

Wednesday, June 17, 2026

The national Backroads Tour is coming to Seattle on July 4, 2026 at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard, 5213 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107, making a statement on the 250th birthday of our nation, that opposing fascism means standing up for shared freedoms and human dignity.

While the government struggles to find artists for their 250th celebrations, the Backroads Tour has been rolling across the nation from Georgia to the midwest, amplifying rural and rural-adjacent voices for change.

This final stop on the tour will celebrate the rural underdogs who have driven progress in rural America throughout our nation’s history.

Artists performing include:
  • Melissa Carper - grew up between Nebraska and Eureka Springs, AR, and is one of the pre-eminent voices of queer honky-tonk coming out of Texas today
  • Jontavious Willis - grew up and still lives in deep rural Georgia, bringing acclaimed country blues that’s seen him collaborating with everyone from Taj Mahal to Keb’ Mo’.
  • The Reverent Marigold - from the farmlands around Davis, California, The Reverent Marigold’s powerful trans folk punk touches on everything from religious faith to queer rage.

The Backroads Tour - Seattle
Tractor Tavern Matinee Show
July 4, 2026, doors at 3:30pm, Show at 4pm
5213 Ballard Avenue NW
Seattle, WA 98107

Tickets online here

Presented by Rural Progress, Backroads is a national music and culture campaign that brings artists, organizers, and local leaders to small towns across the country, turning overlooked spaces into vibrant community commons.

Through concerts, storytelling, and shared joy, we’re reclaiming country music’s and rural America’s roots as a force for connection across race, class, and place. At a moment of deep division, Backroads shows what rural power and progress look like when people come together, one town at a time.

Seattle’s Tractor Tavern is a space known for welcoming a wide range of music, from roots rock to folk and alt-country, bringing together diverse audiences through shared cultural experiences.

That spirit of inclusivity mirrors the night’s message: rural and urban people alike can build community based not on fear but on mutual respect, empathy, and common purpose.

“America was born in rebellion,” says Matt Hildreth, Executive Director of Rural Progress.

“That revolutionary spirit didn’t live only in Philadelphia. It took root in small towns, labor halls, churches, community centers and on front porches where neighbors gathered to debate, organize and demand a say in their own future.”

Shoreline College Theater

In celebration of Taiwanese American Heritage Week, Shoreline College is pleased to share a special opportunity to attend “We Are Taiwan” / 〖看見台灣〗, an international cultural performance taking place at Shoreline College Theater on Sunday, May 24, 2026 at 2:00pm.

It is a meaningful opportunity to experience cultural exchange, celebrate heritage, and connect with the broader community here on our campus.

“We Are Taiwan” is an 80-minute production by the National Taiwan University of Sport Dance Company, one of Taiwan’s leading institutions for dance, performing arts, and arts education.

Since 1996, the company has performed internationally, including in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Singapore, and was part of the creative and performance team for the opening ceremony of the 2017 Summer Universiade in Taipei.

Destinations: 55th Annual Northwest Folklife Festival at Seattle Center May 22-25, 2026

Wednesday, May 20, 2026

Folklife Festival Magazine

The 55th Annual Northwest Folklife Festival Returns to Seattle Center This Memorial Day Weekend, from 12-9pm on May 22-May 24, and from 12-7pm on May 25, 2026

As the final installation of our 5-part Cultural Focus series, Ubuntu is an African philosophy, congregating humanity with the common phrase, “I am because we are.”

As we reflect on the lessons learned from the last 4 years–Metamorphosis, Lagom, Meraki, and Ikigai–we look to the concepts identified with Ubuntu as a way to re-examine our interconnectedness, our solidarity with one another, and our commitment to treating each other with respect and dignity.

The philosophy of Ubuntu has always been found within the festival activities. It’s represented in multi-cultural, intergenerational, and emergent forms of art. Folklife has always breathed life into these fundamental ideas found within Ubuntu.

In collaboration with Smithsonian Folklife, we are able to offer new programs such as the Community Foodways Kitchen and the Ubuntu Summit.

The Community Foodways Kitchen is where we will work with communities and initiatives who are working at the intersections of food & land sovereignty, environmental sustainability, community health, and climate justice.

The Ubuntu Summit is one of four Convenings for Of the People: The Smithsonian Festival of Festivals, a national initiative that highlights the rich cultural traditions and creative communities that shape the United States. This gathering will explore the role of festivals as a tool for placemaking, community development, and cultural liberation operating within a diverse and interconnected Creative Ecosystem.

And while the festival itself has demonstrated for 55 years that “folk” is globally represented, we’ve attempted to use this 5-part series as a way to underscore to the public that that definition is outdated, and is fundamentally incorrect.

Folklife represents over 150 cultural communities, and year after year we see almost 40% of our applicants as first time applicants. The “genres” represented are international, AND are also intergeneration, showcasing punk, hip-hop, house, Afrobeat, and kizomba. They aren’t subject to music and dance, but also reflect food, fashion, and our responsibility to our planet and our land.

We have specifically designed this 5-year Cultural Focus series as a way to reclaim that folk is OF and FOR everyone of us, and highlight the strength of our communities who have been most impacted by erasure and displacement.

So, by joining us in our 55th celebration of our festival, we hope you can find space to reconnect—with yourself, with each other, and with the possibility of something better. May we leave here not only uplifted, but strengthened in our ability to organize, in our commitment to hold space for one another, and in our endeavors to spread unbridled hope.
