Saturday, July 27, 2024

According to reporting in The Seattle Times U.S. health officials Friday announced a recall of some Boar’s Head liverwurst and deli meats as they investigate a listeria outbreak that has sickened nearly three dozen people and caused two deaths across 13 states.

"The Boar’s Head recall of over 200,000 pounds shipped nationwide applies to meats sliced at a deli counter, not prepackaged meats.
"It includes a number of multi-pound packages stamped with an Aug. 10 sell-by date, including bologna, garlic bologna, beef bologna, beef salami, Italian Cappy-style ham and Extra Hot Italian Cappy-style ham.
"Also included is Steakhouse Roasted Bacon Heat and Eat, with a sell-by date of Aug. 15."

Celebrating Midsommar in the Pacific Northwest!
Sunday, June 30, 2024
11am to 6pm
Free Admission

Sign up TODAY to volunteer!

The summer solstice is celebrated by all the Nordic countries, although the celebration may be called by different names, and celebrated in different ways on different days. In Sweden it is called “Midsommar,” so Midsommarfest means Midsommar party or festival.

In Norway, the celebration of the solstice is called Sankt Hans Aften or Jonsok-kveld. In Denmark, the celebration is called Sankthans or Sankthansaften ("St. John's Eve") and in Finland it is called Juhannus.

Midsommarfest, as presented by Skandia Folkdance Society, is a traditional Swedish celebration of the summer solstice, recreated in as authentic a manner as possible, complete with  raising of a garlanded Midsommar pole, a serpentine dance around the pole, and scores of costumed musicians and dancers - traditions practiced in Sweden for centuries.

Over the years since the 1959 inception of Skandia Midsommarfest, the festival has expanded to include contributions from all the Nordic countries so that the rich cultural diversity of all those lands can be experienced by Skandia Midsommarfest attendees.

Spectators are invited to help hoist the 35-foot (previously 45-foot) pole with their muscles or cheers, and then to join in the rousing långdans (serpentine running dance) around the pole, accompanied by the stirring music of massed musicians. Entertainment, food, crafts activities and good times continue throughout the park grounds.

A special focus of Midsommarfest is the Hemslöjdsmarknad - an avenue of traditional crafts where carefully selected crafts people demonstrate their skills and sell their wares. Traditional midsommar food and other Scandinavian delicacies will be offered.

And a flower crown -- the classic midsommarkrans -- ready to decorate to your own taste, will add the finishing touch to your midsommar celebration.

Midsommarfest showcases a wealth of wonderful music and dancing by the Northwest's premier Nordic folk musicians and dancers (and this area boasts some of the best in the Western Hemisphere).

Allspel 2024 led by Ellen Wijsman

Tunes to be played 2x each, in addition to the first, midsommar långdans played longer. After the långdans, start with Ringnessen; end with Stockholmslåten, with probably ~5-6 of the remaining tunes in between. (not in final order)

PNW Fleadh: An Irish Festival in the Northwest - Sunday March 24, 2024 in Everett

Wednesday, March 13, 2024

THE BEST OF IRISH CULTURE IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST

PNW Fleadh: An Irish Festival in the Northwest

Sunday, March 24, 2024 5:00 - 9:00 PM

On a Sunday evening, join the newly founded Irish & Celtic Society of Snohomish County in the final celebration of the St. Patrick’s Day season - the PNW Fleadh.

‘Fleadh’ (pronounced fl-aw)is an Irish word for festival, and this Irish festival will feature Irish musicians, dancers, chefs, and athletes across the Puget Sound.

Audience members will be entranced with the rhythms, tastes, and talents while celebrating the best of Irish culture.

“While we highlight Irish dancing and culture throughout the year, St. Patrick’s Day presents an opportunity to share the vibrant culture of Ireland with all in our community.
"The PNW Fleadh is a rare opportunity to see so many talented Irish performers in one place, and my dancers are honored to be a part of this evening’s entertainment,” commented Lauren Carroll-Bolger of the Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dance.
The Carroll-Henderson Irish dancers are among the many performers of the evening.

March features many Irish celebrations throughout Seattle, but there are limited performances for audiences in North Seattle.

The Irish & Celtic Society of North Snohomish County is changing that with the PNW Fleadh and other upcoming performances. The PNW Fleadh is the ultimate end-celebration of the month and offers an opportunity for audiences not wanting to make the trek into the city.

In addition to many performances, guests are offered dinner by Shawn O’Donnells and can take part in an Irish bake-off and tea tasting competition.

For the bake-off, inspired Irish bakers can create their best soda and/or brown bread and submit their loaves for judgment by an esteemed panel of Irish bread enthusiasts.

Guests can also partake in a blind Irish tea tasting competition and see if they can identify the difference between Barrys or Lyons Irish tea.

Full Festival Line-Up:
  • Carroll-Henderson School of Irish Dance
  • Grafton Street Irish Dance Academy
  • Seattle Irish Dance Company
  • Seattle Gaels - Irish Athletes
  • Stout Pounders - Irish Musicians

Volunteer "chefs" needed at St. Dunstan's to help feed the hungry

Saturday, January 20, 2024

Kitchen volunteers at work at St. Dunstan's

For over ten years St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Shoreline has held a weekly Community Dinner every Tuesday, serving a buffet in the parish hall and delivering hot meals to four homeless encampments in Shoreline and Seattle.

A dedicated group of volunteers, both parishioners and generous friends and neighbors, puts this on as a way to show God’s love to our community and especially to those in need. Altogether we feed 250-300 people every Tuesday.

Our beloved head cook, Dan, needs to take some time off for health reasons. One or two volunteers are needed, perhaps a retired couple with extra time, to fill in overseeing our Tuesday Community Dinners. Experience in a commercial kitchen is not required; we will gladly train you.

Duties include planning the weekly menu; gleaning food donations from local agencies; meal preparation and cooking on Mondays at the church with a team of volunteers; and supervising cooking, distribution of hot food to homeless camps, and serving of a buffet dinner at the church on Tuesdays.

This is a substantial time commitment, but Dan will be available some of the time to provide guidance.

Can you and a partner or friend step forward to help? Or do you know someone who fits the bill? Interested people can contact St. Dunstan’s at 206-363-4319 or office@sdchp.org or email Deacon Alan Christensen

St. Dunstan's is located at 722 N 145th St, Shoreline WA 98133

DOH launches interactive tool to connect people to Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program

Friday, December 15, 2023

OLYMPIA – The Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Nutrition Program of Washington released an online tool to help people find their closest WIC clinic and apply for benefits.

The new WIC Clinic Locator map showcases the more than 200 WIC clinics across the state and provides clinic addresses, phone numbers, and hours of operation.

There’s also a new WIC Interest Form people can fill out online and submit to their clinic of choice, who will then contact applicants directly. Health care providers and community-based organizations can also use the form to refer people to the WIC program.

“The WIC Clinic Locator tool is another important step the state of Washington is taking to modernize the WIC Program, and improve equitable access,” said Michele Roberts, Assistant Secretary for Prevention and Community Health, DOH.
“We know that in our state, as well as nationally, about 50% of people on Medicaid who are also eligible for WIC benefits are not currently enrolled in the program. Our goal with this tool is to spread awareness of WIC, and remove as many barriers as possible.”

WIC provides monthly food benefits with an emphasis on healthy grocery items like milk, fruits, and vegetables. The program also assists with health screenings and referrals, nutritional education, and breast/chest-feeding support.

WIC is for people who are pregnant, recently delivered a baby, who are breast/chest-feeding, and infants and children under 5 years old. Dads, grandparents, foster parents, or other guardians may also apply for WIC for their children.

In 2022, Washington’s WIC program served 195,655 people across the state.

Oktoberfest dinner and dessert auction October 13, 2023 to benefit St. Dunstan's community feeding program

Monday, October 2, 2023

St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church in Shoreline has been feeding people every Tuesday at a community dinner and sending hot meals to four sanctioned tent encampments for over 10 years.

They are a part of the network of feeding programs across the county.

The feeding ministry prepares about 400 meals a week and has prepared over 130,000 since 2012 when they began by taking food to Tent City 3. The indoors community began in late 2014.

On October 13, 2023, at the church, 722 N 145th, Shoreline WA 98133, they are holding an Oktoberfest dinner and dessert auction to benefit the Feeding Program.
Josef Hinkofer, founding cook, has designed a Bavarian menu with garlic caraway pork roast and more.

The party starts at 6:00pm, with time to socialize with drinks and appetizers and to bid on silent auction items: home-baked desserts and other food-themed items. Dinner will be served at 7:00pm.

Dessert is a live auction of several large cakes: chocolate, coconut, and other flavors. Be prepared to collude with others to bid and win the cake of your heart’s desire.

Come learn about the program and see their new documentary video of the feeding program; bring your family, friends, and neighbors.

Suggested dinner donation is $40. Reservations required, click here to sign up by October 8, or on their website, sdchp.org

WIC can continue for two months beyond the federal government shut-down

Friday, September 29, 2023

The federal government will shut down at midnight on Saturday night (unless there is a last minute agreement, which does not seem likely).

One of the programs that may suffer is the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, or WIC, which provides food aid for mothers and children up to 5 years old.

According to reporting the The Washington State Standard, the state's Department of Health, which oversees Washington's WIC program, said they have enough cash to keep the program going for at least a couple of months, even if a shutdown cuts off the normal flow of funding for it.

“We are not planning to institute any changes in the program at this time,” said Paul Throne, director of the department’s Office of Nutrition Services. “If we need emergency finding, we would work internally, and as needed, with the Governor’s Office and Legislature to identify possible sources,” Throne added.

He noted that, during a five-week shutdown that began in December 2018, the state avoided WIC cuts. About 130,000 people rely on the program statewide.

Apples for apple cider - and applesauce

Monday, August 28, 2023

I have never seen an apple tree that produces as prodigiously as this old tree in Echo Lake Park at N 200th and Ashworth Ave N.

The apples all fall to the ground every year and lie there until someone cleans them up. Birds, squirrels, and raccoons ignore them, which supports the idea that they are not very good eating apples.

However, I have been told that apples like this make very good apple cider. If you own a cider press or know where there's one you can use, help yourself. Windfalls are good for cider or you can pick the fruit from the tree.
