ShoreLake Arts is moving forward

Wednesday, August 14, 2024

ShoreLake Arts is celebrating its 35th year of supporting the arts and providing arts experiences in Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

It is with great excitement that ShoreLake Arts looks forward to some upcoming changes. We have a new leader to help steward the organization forward, we are planning for a more visible and accessible location in the Ridgecrest neighborhood, and we are expecting continued expansion of our education programs and special events.

Laura James, Director ShoreLake Arts
ShoreLake Arts welcomes Laura James as our new Executive Director

Laura comes to us with deep roots in our community, a background in art, art education and private business and an unparalleled passion for ShoreLake Arts.

Laura is an active member of the community with extensive volunteer experience in local schools.

Laura filled in as ShoreLake Arts temporary Managing Director earlier this year.

John Farrimond, our recent Executive Director, has found a new opportunity far afield and we appreciate his help during this transition time for us.

ShoreLake Arts will move to Ridgecrest business district

It is through Laura’s efforts that ShoreLake Arts is pursuing a move from the Shoreline Center to a storefront in the Ridgecrest neighborhood that will make us more visible to the community. The Ridgecrest neighborhood is accessible to both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. The new location will be ShoreLake Arts’ operating office as well as occasional art class/pop up art location.

Gallery at Third Place Commons closes

And that brings us to another big change. We have closed the Gallery at Third Place Commons to bring all of our endeavors to one location.

It is with great appreciation and thanks that we say goodbye to Gallery Manager, Lisa Palmatier. For many years she has curated artists to bring some wonderful artwork into our community for purchase. We also want to thank Barbara Angersbach and Jennifer Munson for all of their hard work in taking care of our customers. We will continue to carry links to artists and their work on our website and be your community resource for local artwork.

We are looking forward to the next 35 years. We expect many years at our new location in Ridgecrest and being a more visible and active partner in our community. Thank you for your continued support!

For our current events or to get involved in ShoreLake Arts, please visit https://www.shorelakearts.org.

John Farrimond named as ShoreLake Arts Executive Director

John Farrimond, Executive Director
ShoreLake Arts
John joined ShoreLake Arts in May and has already been making an impact.

He began his arts career in Chicago before earning his business degree and relocating to Los Angeles. There he worked in rising leadership positions in the field of developmental disabilities.

Although he was on the administrative side, he kept in close contact with the arts through important projects such as Through Our Eyes, a visual arts show featuring the work of students on the autism spectrum.

In addition, he produced live events with student choirs, video productions, and Music for Autism concerts.

After moving to Tennessee to lead another developmental disabilities organization, John transitioned to consulting and then to the CEO position at Chattanooga Ballet where he led a renaissance of the organization.

In late 2022, he very happily moved to the Seattle area, the fulfillment of a long-standing goal. Here he has worked with several educational institutions before taking the reins of ShoreLake Arts.

John is looking forward to being a part of the community so please do not hesitate to say hello when you see him out and about!

About World Collage Day

World Collage Day is an annual, international celebration of collage on the Second Saturday of May.

Initiated by Kolaj Magazine in 2018, we invited artists and art venues to hold events on that day to celebrate collage. World Collage Day is about artists connecting across borders against a global context of entrenchment and separation.

And the day is about an art medium that excels at bringing different things together to create new forms and new ways of thinking.

Ric Kasini Kadour, the editor of Kolaj Magazine, writes, “We created World Collage Day because we wanted to honour this community of artists and to remind the world what a spirit of cooperation, mutual support, and creativity can look like.”

New Executive Director named for ShoreLake Arts

Thursday, May 2, 2024

John Farrimond
Executive Director, ShoreLake Arts
It is with great excitement that we announce the acceptance of the position of Executive Director of ShoreLake Arts by John Farrimond!

John comes to us from Tennessee where he was the CEO for the Chattanooga Ballet. He helped build the organization into a strong arts organization with a larger staff, budget, and more class offerings.

John also created a creative outreach program to the rural community around Chattanooga to bring ballet to these areas where folks don't usually get the opportunity to enjoy it.

John has vast experience as a CEO, consultant and president of several non-profit organizations through the years focusing initially on special needs children, a personal passion of his. John has also had his hand in the arts for years himself working as an actor and producer in his early years and currently finishing up a writing project.

Thankfully John's love of the Pacific NW brought him here from Tennessee. He has filled his time here consulting with various firms and sharing his many talents and expertise while looking for a more permanent home.

We are fortunate to have John join ShoreLake Arts. Our new ED is already out in the community getting to know people, learning about the area and sharing his love for the arts.

Lantern Festival had crafts for the kids and many colorful dance performances for everyone's enjoyment

Wednesday, February 28, 2024

ShoreLake Arts put on a heck of a good party on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at the Spartan Recreation Center - the Lantern Festival, celebrating the Lunar New Year.

The Lantern Festival has been part of the Chinese New Year celebrations since the Han Dynasty (206 BC – 221AD).

It is said that the holiday evolved from an ancient Chinese belief that celestial spirits could be seen flying about in the light of the first full moon of the lunar calendar.

People used torches and eventually lanterns of every shape, size and color to aid them in spotting the spirits.
Multiple craft tables provided activities for children

It started at noon with a room full of crafts, vendors, neighborhood representatives, and Asian cuisine food trucks.

Both ELNA and North City neighborhoods participated

ShoreLake Arts and the City of Shoreline teamed up with artist Hua Zhang to create this year’s at-home paper lantern kit. The lanterns look amazing, are fun to make, and are a great way to learn about a long-standing Lunar New Year tradition.

With the easy to follow instructions you can make as many as you want.

This month was the beginning of the Year of the Dragon and Shoreline Community College started things off by presenting a Dragon Dance.

Elsa Bouman - an artful life

Monday, December 25, 2023

Artist Elsa Bouman

"When you buy a piece of art, a ticket to a concert, theatre, or dance event, you are saying 'yes' to artists and the organizations that encourage their efforts.
"Shorelake Arts is one of those caring organizations that has been celebrating the arts for 35 years.
"The ShoreLake Gallery is one of their key programs and showcases a small, but elegant collection created by local artists. I am proud to sell works in this sparkling gem of a gallery."

--Elsa Bouman

A full-time mixed-media artist living and teaching in Lake Forest Park since 2007, Elsa Bouman worked as a graphic designer in the music industry and taught folk art in the Bay Area for 30 years.

Elsa's personality shines through in her work (available at the ShoreLake Arts Gallery). Her curiosity, sense of play, and focus on communication are visible in both her art and her personal style.

"I work hard and experiment a lot, and get such joy from my art. I am grateful to share my visions ... I want art, mine or someone else’s, to evoke a feeling.

"I have no formula, and realism eludes me. A fresh perspective, an odd view, or a focus on shapes -- the Dutch have a saying that translates into “Do normal, it’s strange enough.”

"Whether creating or teaching, my art is a spiritual testimony where I find my truest self." -Elsa Bouman

Shoreline students' "Fiber Meetup" led by Bouman, Third Place Commons

She's also taught fiber and mixed media workshops for students of all ages (many through ShoreLake Arts), and led teacher training in art education. While no longer teaching regularly, Elsa still shares her collage techniques and other art with the community in free, hands-on workshops sponsored by the Gallery.

In addition to the ShoreLake Arts Gallery, Elsa's work can be seen in exhibits throughout the region. "We're fortunate that Elsa chooses to show and sell her work with us."

For images of Elsa's current work, visit her Instagram at elsa_bouman, and see her iconic concert posters on Wolfgang's.

The ShoreLake Arts Gallery, which sells work by more than 120 local artists each year, exists because of your support.

Your contributions help power the Gallery, the 6x6NW Art Exhibit & Sale, and other programs showcasing local artists like Elsa.

Give ART this year - visit the ShoreLake Arts Gallery, located on the lower lobby of Town Center Lake Forest Park, intersection of Bothell and Ballinger Way NE.

Open Tuesday - Saturday from 12/26-12/30, 12 pm - 5 pm
