Klahaya was one of the teams
in the competition
Four local tennis clubs, Klahaya, View Ridge, Innis Arden, and Aqua Club, came together on Wednesday August 5, 2026 for the annual North End Junior League Tournament.

It was a great day of tennis filled with competitive matches from start to finish. Athletes competed in singles and doubles across the 14U and 18U divisions.

It was fun to see players from the different clubs challenge one another while showing great sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

A big thank you goes out to all of the site managers, coaches, and volunteers who helped make the tournament run so smoothly. It takes a lot of work behind the scenes to put together an event like this, and we appreciate everyone who gave their time to make it a success.

Alpha Delta Chapter of A∆K awards two scholarships to local seniors

Sunday, June 7, 2026

Two future teachers recently received $1500 scholarships from the Washington State Alpha Delta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, an international organization of women educators dedicated to promoting excellence in education by supporting educators, students, families and communities, celebrating diversity, and encouraging world understanding.

The scholarship recipients, Josephine Cunningham and Ethan Bennett, were selected for their outstanding academics, their activities and community service, and their demonstrated desire to work with children.

Josephine Cunningham with parents Tonya and Doug Cunningham

Josephine Cunningham from Shorecrest High School is the daughter of Doug and Tonya Cunningham.

Josephine is a wonderful combination of intellect and creativity which she uses to help others. Exposed to teaching early through volunteering in her mother's preschool classroom, she quickly realized the important role and positive effect of a thoughtful teacher.

A member of National Honor Society and an AP Scholar Award winner, she has a rigorous academic history, including many Advanced Placement courses and four years of French. Josephine is a member of the Ceramics Club and a talented dancer on the SC Hip Hop Dance Team. In both activities she has become a leader and mentor, as well as a performer.

Her years of training in ballet and other dance styles at the Barclay Shelton Dance Centre led her to preparing younger dancers to perform, working two years at the Dance This! overnight summer camp, where she helped teach new techniques and styles, and then being responsible for creating activities and a safe place for groups of 20 students at YMCA camp.

Recognized for her hours of community service, Josephine has also prepared herself for teaching with volunteering in preschool and 5th grade classrooms plus mentoring and organizing as a Shorecrest Ambassador and Link Crew member. With her talents, creativity and caring for others, she will provide that inspiriting spark of an effective teacher.

Josephine will attend Oregon State University, majoring in Elementary Education.

Ethan Bennett with parents Jennifer and Scott Bennett

Ethan Bennett from Shorewood High School is the son of Scott and Jennifer Bennett.

A talented musician, just this school year Ethan won a Superior Soloist Award at the Newport Jazz Festival and an Honorable Mention Trombone Award at the 31st Annual Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Competition and Festival in New York City, along with sharing group awards including the Susan C. Gordon Award for Most Soulful Jazz Band. Seeing him perform leaves no doubt of his passion for music and joy in sharing it.

Inspired by how his teachers found ways to adapt through the Pandemic and then reached out to help students readjust to school, Ethan has chosen to use his passion for music and his desire to help others by pursuing education as a career.

He has prepared himself well academically with many Advanced Placement, Honors, and UW courses. He has also involved himself in mentoring and teaching situations. In high school he volunteered with the Einstein MS band, served as the trombone section leader at SW, and became a teacher's assistant for the SW symphonic band.

As a cabin counselor at Camp Orkila, he supervised campers, led them in activities and taught new skills. He also assisted with the middle school cross country team. Ethan's positive enthusiasm, caring, and talents will draw students toward learning. He will be an inspiring band director.

Ethan will attend the University of Washington with the goal of being a secondary music teacher.

History, Badges, and Big Dreams: Shoreline Scouts leave their mark on the museum wall

Saturday, May 23, 2026

St. Luke Girl Scout Troop teams up with the DAR and Shoreline Historical Museum for a day of history, laughter, and a question nobody saw coming: “Who is the Big Sister?”

Submitted by Peter Puget Chapter, NSDAR and St. Luke Girl Scout Troop 45312 · Shoreline, WA

Something remarkable happened at the Shoreline Historical Museum this May. The girls of St. Luke Girl Scout (GS) Troop 45312 arrived ready to learn history — and left having made it.

They sang songs, suited up in archival gloves for a behind-the-scenes museum tour, traded handmade SWAPs (Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere), earned a Scout badge, and sealed a time capsule for a girl not yet born. Not a bad afternoon for a group of 11 year olds.

The occasion was the “Sisters in Time” program created in partnership with the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) Peter Puget Chapter and the Shoreline Historical Museum.

With 2026 marking America’s 250th birthday, the timing was perfect for a program celebrating the women woven into every chapter of that story — and placing today’s scouts squarely in that line.

The centerpiece is a living timeline, called “Women Who Dared” that the scouts built themselves. Each girl received laminated cards featuring women from 1776 to 2026 — Abigail Adams, Susan B. Anthony, Sally Ride, and 19 others — then one by one walked to the gallery wall and placed them in order.

At the 1912 card for Juliette Gordon Low and the 1890 card for the DAR founding, the girls were asked: “If we are Sisters Through Time, who is the Big Sister?”

(Visit the exhibit and find out!) At the 1920 Women’s Suffrage card, each scout held a collection of real Susan B. Anthony coins and history passed hand to hand.

Then came the letter. U.S. Senator Patty Murray — herself a former Shoreline Girl Scout — sent a personal note to the troop. A Scout read it aloud while the girls stood at the completed timeline, right beside Senator Murray’s own card. “She’s on our timeline!” said one scout, eyes wide. The finished display, “Women Who Dared,” is now on exhibit at the Shoreline Historical Museum.

The day closed with letters sealed in a time capsule, to be opened in 2126. Before writing, the troop was asked: “What do you hope is still the same a hundred years from now?”

The girls hoped for peace. For kindness. For a world where everyone is treated fairly. And — with great feeling — for Trader Joe’s. (Some things are worth preserving.)

Those letters, along with SWAPs, empty GS cookie boxes, a GS song book, and a DAR storybook, are now archived and waiting for a scout in 2126 to find them.

The Girl Scout Leaders and DAR Peter Puget Chapter Regent led the badge ceremony that followed, presenting each girl with her Girl Scout Way badge and an official certificate of participation. With parents in attendance, there were loads of cheers.

These girls are not the end of this story — they are its next chapter. The “Women Who Dared” exhibit is now on display and open to the public at the Shoreline Historical Museum, 18501 Linden Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133. Visit shorelinemuseum.org for hours and group visit information.

Carl Dinse photos published in The Seattle Times

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

Carl Dinse, whose name you will recognize from his long affiliation with the Shoreline Area News, is an aquarium enthusiast.

Annie Fanning, in the At Home in the Northwest section of The Seattle Times, published an article on April 24, 2026 about aquarium hobbyists (read it here) which includes two of Carl's photos.

The first photo shows the aquarium of Shoreline resident Christina Rotondo, who says she designed her aquariums to fit in seamlessly with the midcentury modern vibe of her home’s décor.

This photo, also in the Times article, shows the aquarium of north Seattle resident Kevin Do.

Carl has been an aquarium hobbyist since he was a kid. Around 13 years ago a store in Firdale Village called Aquarium Co Op opened, specializing in freshwater aquariums, which is what he was interested in.

The store owner introduced him to the Greater Seattle Aquarium Society which he joined immediately. In recent years he started volunteering for that club.

"Among other things in that club, I do a lot of photography for the club newsletter. One of the club's biggest annual events is the Home Show, where a crew of 5-6 people, (2-3 judges, a producer, videographer, and photographer) get together in a van and tour 7-12 homes in the greater Seattle area to video record and photograph aquariums."

In March the resulting one hour video is presented at the club monthly meeting. At that time the winners are announced and prizes are handed out. Most of the home show videos and photographs are published online at the Greater Seattle Aquarium Society’s website.

From those homes they award 2-4 homes as winners of the annual home show contest.

Two years ago, I was asked if I’d like to join the crew as the photographer. This year was my second home show as photographer.

The Seattle Times article features three of this year’s home show contestants. They also feature the owner of Aquarium Zen, one of the club’s sponsor stores located in the Roosevelt neighborhood, and they left a link as well for Aquarium Co Op

“Canopy Award” given to Save Shoreline Trees

Monday, April 13, 2026

SST co-chairs Kathleen Russell and Susanne Tsoming with the Trees & People Coalition award.

By Kathleen Russell

At their inaugural “Canopy Awards” on April 9, 2026, the Trees & People Coalition “celebrating innovation, stewardship, and community through trees” recognized Save Shoreline Trees in the category of Community Outreach and Educational Programs.

This award acknowledges Save Shoreline Trees' work on the retention of the 94 trees lining Dayton Ave N between N 155th and N 160th retained by the PermaTrak boardwalk which protects the roots of the trees.

Save Shoreline Trees was formed in late 2019 when the WA State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) was renovating its headquarters at 15700 Dayton Ave N.

WSDOT's remodel permit required frontage improvements and 133 trees, mostly Doug firs, were at risk. SST supporters called attention to a potential environmental disaster.

WSDOT, not wanting to cut down the trees, took the lead to resolve the conflict. In 2021, the City of Shoreline approved the WSDOT alternative for the elevated PermaTrak boardwalk.

PermaTrak boardwalk along Dayton Ave N and the trees that were saved

A memorandum of agreement was reached between WSDOT and the City that these trees are managing the stormwater infrastructure, making a man-made structure unnecessary. The 94 tall trees along Dayton are standing today due to the efforts of the community, WSDOT, and the City working together to find a solution.

SST continues to work for the retention of tall and native trees in Shoreline.

This effort is in accordance with Shoreline’s 2044 Comprehensive Plan Natural Environment goal to: “Maintain and increase the urban tree canopy to provide wildlife habitat, support community resilience, mitigate urban heat, manage stormwater, conserve energy, protect and improve mental and physical health, and strengthen economic prosperity.”

Year round, these trees sequester carbon, clean the air and cool our neighborhoods.

Additional honorees recognized by the Trees & People Coalition included Crow Woods Cohousing Community, A Windermere Garden, Valley School Outdoor Classroom and Amphitheater, and Robert Eagle Staff Forest.

Appreciation to the Trees & People Coalition and Seattle Parks Foundation for celebrating community through trees.
