Former Boy Scout volunteer sentenced to 22 years in prison for hiding cameras in camp bathrooms

Wednesday, May 8, 2024

ST. LOUIS – U.S. District Judge Rodney W. Sippel on Thursday sentenced a former Boy Scout volunteer from Redmond, WA to 22 years in prison for hiding cameras in bathrooms at a St. Francois County, Missouri scout camp.

Judge Sippel also ordered David Lee Nelson to pay $55,000 in special assessments that will go to a fund for victims and prevention programs and $6,810 to pay for counseling for his victims.

After he gets out of prison, Nelson will be on supervised release for life, with special conditions that include a prohibition against any contact with minors without permission.

Nelson hid two cameras in bathrooms at the S Bar F Scout Ranch in St. Francois County in July of 2021 while working there as a volunteer. Nelson hid the cameras in paper towel dispensers, positioning them so they would capture a shower stall and other portions of the bathroom.

One camera was discovered when a scout leader and scouts were cleaning out one of the restroom stalls. A search uncovered another camera, and leaders then called the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department.

When questioned later by a sheriff’s deputy after being spotted near the bathrooms, Nelson lied and said he was looking for a cell phone charger that he’d left in the stall.

During Thursday’s hearing, victims and their parents said Nelson was supposed to be protecting the scouts and was supposed to be someone children could trust. Nelson’s crimes, they said, have now left them unable to trust others. The victims also said they now experience fear and discomfort every time they try to use a public bathroom.

Nelson, 41, of Redmond, Washington, pleaded guilty in January to two counts of production of child pornography and two counts of attempted production of child pornography.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice.

Led by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Department of Justice Criminal Division's Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.

The North Central Seattle Kiwanis Club will hold a Zoom virtual meeting beginning at 7:00pm on Thursday, March 18, 2021.

Learn how Girl Scouts Beyond Bars is building healthy relationships between girls and their incarcerated parents.

This program reduces girls’ emotional distress and behavior issues during their parents’ incarceration, and improves parent/child bonding, and strengthens parenting skills.

These Scout meetings are led by incarcerated parents with a curriculum taught to strengthen their leadership skills. The program has demonstrated a successful community reentry process for parents and reduced infractions during incarceration, and reduced recidivism after parents’ release.

All Kiwanis members and members of the public are welcome to participate. Those who are not Kiwanis members can get instructions on how to access the Zoom meeting by contacting Barbara Williams at

Eagle Scout project: donate your old phones and chargers

Tuesday, February 23, 2021

Pilsung Kwak is currently conducting his Eagle Scout project with Troop 309 and The Lake Forest Park Rotary Club. Troop 309 is led by Scoutmaster Dwight Thompson and Assistant Scoutmaster Todd Wunder, who are both providing help in planning and conducting the project.

Kwak explains, "My project is a phone donation drive in which I am collecting ANY type of phone in ANY condition as well as things such as chargers (portable or not) and phone cases."

These cellphones will be donated to the Youth Services Committee of the Lake Forest Park Rotary Foundation and given to homeless teenagers after restoration.

Homeless teenagers require these phones to call for help, find jobs, study for school, etc. and these issues have been exacerbated by COVID-19. Most businesses allow limited in-person access meaning phones are an even more vital resource.

The project is currently ongoing and will be conducted until March 1st.

"I currently have 4 stores that serve as drop-off zones for the phones. In each store is a box which I put there to collect the phones.

These stores are:

Each store has a drop-off box which will be regularly cleaned and emptied by volunteers from my Troop. Simply drop your phone and other miscellaneous objects into the box and we will take care of the rest.

Please abide by all Covid-19 restrictions while donating your phones. Thank you very much for helping better our community.

For more information or question, they have a website at: https://www.bsa309.org/eagleproject or email pskwak22@gmail.com

Eagle Scout projects at Five Acre Woods

Monday, September 28, 2020

A large grove of tall trees. All have ivy wrapped around their trunks, going up 25 feet.
Ivy growing up trees is NOT A Good Thing

There are presently three Eagle Scout projects planned for completion from late August through early October in Five Acre Woods.

One will remove ivy climbing up trees. Those vines have regrown 15-feet high since volunteers cut the big vines on trees a year and a half ago!

The second project will remove ivy that is overgrowing downed trees and shrubs at the southeast part of the park.

This action should facilitate access to that area so community volunteers can remove the ground cover ivy.

The third Eagle project will remove the large invasive English Holly and English Laurel shrubs from the park east of the wetland, as well as small plants of those species within 15-feet of the large ones.

The work of all these projects will be done by groups of five or less people, all wearing masks and keeping good distance from each other. We expect it will take 3 to 4 days for each project due to the small size of the work groups.

The new trail constructed by two Eagle projects earlier this year is getting lots of use and many favorable comments. It allows people to experience different habitats closer to the wetland than is accessible from our other trails.

Foundation Board member and Scout liaison Doug Hennick reports that people are respecting Five Acre Woods quite well by staying on trails and keeping out of the wetland. We commend these young community volunteers for improving the park for all to enjoy!

Listen to the KUOW story: "Rip the ivy out of your yard right now. Seriously" and be inspired to get rid of the ivy encroaching in your yard.

The WA State Noxious Weed Control Board has more information on identifying and removing English Ivy.

Bartells is your Girl Scout Cookie headquarters

Friday, May 1, 2020

Bartells has all 8 varieties of cookies
Here at Bartell’s, we’ve always had a soft spot for local companies and organizations.

After all – we are one!

That’s why we continue to select so many amazing local products to sell in our stores and support our local communities.

We’re extremely excited to partner with the Girl Scouts of Western Washington to be the exclusive seller of their famous Girl Scout Cookies!

Beginning April 29th, all 67 Bartell’s locations will be selling 8 varieties of the cookies – Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Lemon-Ups, Trefoils, S’mores, Do-Si-Dos, and gluten-free Toffee-tastics.

After COVID-19 caused the close of many businesses and added social distancing and stay at home orders, Girl Scouts were no longer allowed to sell in front of businesses as they usually do.

“When we realized there was an opportunity for a partnership with the Girl Scouts of Western Washington, it was an immediate ‘Yes!’ The Girl Scouts’ annual Cookie Sale is their biggest source of funding and having the means to support an iconic, local organization made it an easy decision to join forces,” said Brent Beebe, SVP of Merchandising for Bartell’s.

“This is a first for us as an organization,” says Megan Ferland, CEO of Girl Scouts of Western Washington. “We’re a girl-led organization, and girls are our salesforce. We call them “cookie bosses” because they’re learning crucial skills like money management, working with people and decision-making that will serve them throughout their lives.

"But COVID-19 has put us in a place we never thought we’d be. Even though girls can’t be there in person at the stores, when you buy cookies at Bartell’s, you’re still supporting the girls we serve, and all the money is staying local. We can’t thank Bartell’s enough for their support.”

We have approximately 300,000 boxes of Girl Scout cookies to sell – so next time you’re in one of our stores, pick up a box – or two – or ten!

Please, don’t make us eat them all by ourselves.

Eagle Scout candidate initiates project to assist homebound seniors during COVID-19 crisis

Friday, April 3, 2020

Ballinger Thriftway allowed a donation bin in the store
for Andrew W to collect food for homebound senior citizens
Eagle Scout Candidate Andrew W is leading an Eagle Scout Project to provide needed food resources for needy homebound seniors in Lake Forest Park and Shoreline.

The project, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lake Forest Park, will benefit seniors being served by the Shoreline/Lake Forest Park Senior Center. The senior center is now the primary lifeline to provide needed meals, food and supplies to homebound seniors.

Theresa La Croix, Senior Center Director, notes that this Eagle Scout Project comes at a critical time when the senior center had to cease in-person operations due to the COVID-19, leaving many seniors without the food and service support that the center offers every week.

Funding and resources were never meant to provide for the unique and vast need required by the COVID-19 crisis.

She notes that KC Public Health Directives severely limit the way staff and volunteers can even interact with seniors on a face to face basis when dropping off food.

The center cleans all the food donated, prepares some meals for delivery and prepares the weekly food boxes for delivery. Seniors cannot pick up food at the center as the center itself is closed to the public by health order.

Currently, Ballinger Thriftway on Ballinger Way has allowed a donation box in their store to collect donations.

Andrew is working with other grocery stores and retailers to either donate fresh food or place other collection boxes. The senior center also needs certain fresh items to supplement the food boxes.

When Andrew found out that some of the seniors could not lift
the food boxes or bend down to get the food, he had tables
built for their front porches.

In an unexpected twist to his project, Andrew was told that food was being left on the doorstep of elderly disabled seniors who could not lift the 20-pound box much less bend down to get the food.

He had volunteers build small 2’ X 2’ tables to place on the porch for the food box so these seniors could safely get their food. All the tables were built with donated wood and labor.

Andrew has a web page for more information about his project and information on how to donate food, supplies or make a cash donation.

The Lake Forest Park Rotary Charitable Foundation can receive tax deductible cash donations for this project.

All funds received will go to benefit COVID-19 emergency senior services in Lake Forest Park and Shoreline - particularly homebound and needy seniors served by the Senior Center, which is in desperate need of resources.

Andrew is a member of Scouts BSA Troop 309 in Shoreline WA. Information about his project and how you can help can be found HERE

To contact Andrew or ask questions please contact his Scoutmaster (and Rotarian) Dwight Thompson at dthompson@reswa.org or 206-399-9477.

Scouts collected old Christmas trees

Monday, January 6, 2020

From left: Ben Stevens, Matthew Pacunski (Star Scout) and Assistant Scoutmaster Todd Wunder.

Text and photo by Cynthia Sheridan

Boy Scout Troop 309 was out early Saturday morning, January 4, 2020 to collect and dispose of Christmas trees in their assigned area. The boys were especially excited to open the donation envelopes after they tossed the trees into the trailer.

They had previously left the envelopes at homes in their area, letting people know that they would come around on Saturday to pick up Christmas trees and would appreciate a donation.

Ben is a sixth grader who loves sharing his scouting adventures and the new skills he is learning as a Boy Scout. Matthew is a junior in high school and is focused on completing his Eagle Scout project. Todd is the Assistant Scoutmaster.

Troop 309 meets every Monday 7:00pm at St. Mark Church in Shoreline. The troop is actively seeking boys between the ages of 11-17 to join them. They are also interested in starting a group for girls. For information about becoming a scout, contact Troop Master Dwight Thompson: 206-399-9477.

Troop 309 thanks BloomaTreeExperts.com who handled chipping of the Christmas trees at no cost to the Troop.

Correction 1/6/2020: Ben - sixth grade; Matthew - high school junior; Todd - assistant scoutmaster

Shoreline Boy Scout Troop makes large impact with Volunteer Service at Twin Ponds Park

Wednesday, November 14, 2018

Troop 325 has been working all year at the
south end of Twin Ponds Park

Since their first work party on January 27, 2018, the Boy Scouts of Troop 325, of First Lutheran Church in Shoreline have provided a good portion of the labor for environmental restoration in the southern end of Twin Ponds Park.

Their efforts have resulted in major changes to wildlife habitat along Thornton Creek. They have participated in the Shoreline Department of Parks, Recreation and Culture’s effort to transform degraded areas into renewed urban forests. The Washington Native Plant Society and King Conservation District have also supported this program.

16 foot blackberry vines

Scouts from sixth graders to high school age participated with their leaders and other volunteers.

Beginning last winter they chopped down thickly entwined, invasive, sixteen foot blackberry vines that prevented native plants from surviving and worked hard to dig out as many deeply buried roots as possible.

Spreading mulch on the cleared areas

They also tackled invasive laurel, ivy and weeds. They returned to spread thick layers of mulch on the cleared areas before some Scouts and other volunteers could begin planting trees and shrubs.

Digging out the blackberry roots

Over the summer, some blackberries did begin to regrow from fragments of roots left behind endangering our new plants and threatening to swamp the area again. This Fall, the Scouts have returned to dig deep into the soil, sometimes as much as two feet deep or three feet across to remove the large mass of roots still lurking as they spread both horizontally and vertically. It usually takes three years of this work to remove the weeds.

The boys are hard workers

Shoreline Park users have commented on the drastic change in the area and some even stop to compliment the hard work they can see happening, noting that one does not often see young people laboring in this fashion.

Hauling out the debris

Troop 325 should be congratulated for helping to make real environmental changes that will allow appropriate plants to survive and provide food and shelter for other types of wildlife. They have helped beautify a prominent piece of parkland and made recreational outings there much more enjoyable. All of Shoreline will appreciate their dedication and efforts.

For citizens wishing to join the ongoing work, the next work party is Saturday, November 17 from 10:00 to 1:00pm. RSVP or inquire at: RestoreTwinPondsSouth@outlook.com .

After December 15, we will work on the fourth Saturday of each month.

Boy Scout Troop 850 may start a local girls' troop

Monday, October 22, 2018

Last year the Boy Scouts announced that they would open their doors to both boys and girls. Troop 850 has been serving Shoreline / Lake Forest Park for 50+ years.

We are currently assessing interest in a Girls Troop that would have access to all the activities and achievements (including Eagle), but led by girls. The Troop is for girls in 5th Grade through 18 yrs old.

I have been the Cub Scout (K-5th) Leader for the last several years, and we’ve added many young girls that will be moving up, and would like to extend the opportunity to the older girls.
