First Annual Shoreline Slam High School Tennis Tournament a breakout success

Tuesday, July 30, 2024

Rylie Gettman, Shorewood and Luke Madath,
Bishop Blanchet, earned Gold in mixed doubles
By Barb Smith

July 29, 2024 Shoreline, WA

The First Annual Shoreline Slam High School Tennis Tournament Presented by Tennis Center Sand Point was a resounding success, attracting 162 players from over 35 different high schools from Friday July 26 through Sunday July 28, 2024.

Jointly hosted by the Shorewood and Shorecrest High School tennis programs, with matches played at both Kellogg Middle School and Shorewood High School courts, the Shoreline Slam attracted athletes from all across Washington and as far away as Vancouver Island, Canada and even Luxembourg.

The Shoreline Slam was inspired by the Snohomish Summer Smash, an annual tournament created nine years ago for tennis players looking to compete in the off season against their high school peers.

Offering Gold, Silver and Bronze divisions, both tournaments cater to players of all abilities, from junior varsity to state medalists.

Senior Luke Madath, Bishop Blanchet, claimed first place
in Boys singles, Boys doubles, and Mixed doubles.

Luke Madath, a senior at Bishop Blanchet and 5th place boys doubles medalist at the 2024 WA State 3A Tennis Championships, dominated the event, claiming first place honors in each of the Boys Gold Singles, Boys Gold Doubles and Gold Mixed Doubles events.

Madath defeated Henry Zhu from The Overlake School 6-1, 6-4, then teamed up with Peter Kosten, a senior at Shorewood, to claim the Boys Gold Doubles title with a score of 6-4, 6-2 over Zhu and his Overlake teammate, Benjamin Ta

For his last victory of the weekend, Madath teamed up for Mixed Doubles with Shorewood Junior Rylie Gettmann, winning 6-1, 6-1 over Nalu Akiona of Edmonds Woodway and Addie Streidl of Lakeside

Kosten, Gettmann, Akiona and Streidl are all former WA State 3A Tennis medalists.

Shorewood Gold Doubles Rylie Gettmann and Alex Mignogna

Gettmann also claimed multiple trophies, teaming up with Shorewood teammate Alex Mignogna to win Girls Gold Doubles 6-1, 6-1 over Streidl and her Lakeside teammate, Caroline Carter.

Shorewood Junior Carlota Garibay Romero
claimed the Girls Gold Singles title
Shorewood Junior Carlota Garibay Romero claimed the Girls Gold Singles title over Gettmann 6-0, 6-2, having secured the Girls Gold Singles and Gold Mixed Doubles titles at the Snohomish Summer Smash the prior weekend.

"We are thrilled with the turnout and the level of competition we witnessed at our inaugural Shoreline Slam," said Arnie Moreno, head coach of the Shorewood High School tennis program.
"This tournament has set a high standard, and we look forward to making it an annual tradition that continues to inspire and connect young tennis players."

“When we started planning this event, we were hoping to have 80 kids registered,” said Leslie Boyd of Shorewood Boosters.

“To have over double that number participate in our very first year shows us just how much kids value friendly competition against their peers. We are so happy to have been able to provide them with this opportunity.”

Rob Mann, head coach of the Shorecrest High School tennis program, added, "The collaboration between our schools and the enthusiastic participation from the players, families and volunteers made this event a resounding success.
'We are very excited about the future of the Shoreline Slam and the positive impact it will continue to have on our local tennis community for years to come."

Final results are attached, with more information available at Shoreline Slam.

Shorewood players score big at the Snohomish Summer Smash

Tuesday, July 23, 2024

Shorewood’s Carlota Garibay Romero
took the Girls Gold Singles title

One hundred eighty-five tennis players traveled from as far South as Vancouver and as far North as Bellingham, making their way to the Snohomish Valley to see who would come out on top at the 9th Annual Snohomish Summer Smash presented by Columbia Athletic Club- Silver Lake.

Shorewood classmates Carlota Garibay Romero and Xander Gordon
took the Mixed Doubles Gold championship

When the smoke cleared, among those holding the coveted Champion t-shirts was Shorewood’s Carlota Garibay Romero, who took the Girls Gold Singles title before teaming up with classmate Xander Gordon to take the Mixed Doubles Gold championship.

Sponsored this year by Columbia Athletic Club-Silver Lake, the Summer Smash was started in 2015 as an alternative for high school players who wanted to take part in competitive tennis but not play in USTA tournaments.

Participation in the four-day event has grown exponentially since the pandemic, with this year’s turnout nearly triple the total from 2019. Players interested in learning more about the tournament can go to Snohomish Summer Smash.

9th Annual Snohomish Summer Smash gearing up for play

Wednesday, June 19, 2024

The Snohomish Summer Smash presented by Columbia Athletic Club - Silver Lake, a four day tournament for high school players ages 14-18, returns to the Snohomish High School Tennis Courts July 18th-21st.

Registration costs are $40 for Singles players and $60 for Doubles and Mixed Doubles teams, with proceeds going to the Snohomish High School tennis programs. Last year, a record 185 players from high schools stretching from Seattle to Bellingham battled it out on the courts.

Tournament Director Kraig Norris has watched this tournament continue to grow, since its beginnings in 2015.

“The real explosion in participation began after the Pandemic. Many area clubs have simply stopped offering Junior USTA tournaments, and players are desperate for opportunities to compete. Area high school coaches realized that we were providing a chance for their players to compete and get better, and many have actively promoted our tournament.”

Now, with clubs like Platinum Sponsor Columbia -Silver Lake, Silver Sponsor Tennis Center Sand Point, and other clubs promoting the tournament, the Summer Smash is one of the largest non-USTA tournaments in the state.

Registration deadline for the Summer Smash is July 9th; players interested in participating can go to snohomishsummersmash.com for more information.

Shorewood sent 6 girls and 5 boys to the WIAA State Tennis Tournament, in Vancouver, Washington, at the Vancouver Tennis Center.

Matches started at 8am on Friday May 24, 2024 and concluded with the medal round of matches on Saturday morning and afternoon.

Shorewood qualified 11 players for the state tournament.

The Girls and Boys teams were WesCo South league champions and District 1 team champions for this 2023-24 season.

The Shorewood girls team sent junior Rylie Gettmann, 4th at State in 2023, senior Emily Lin, 7th at State in 2023, both in singles: Gettmann as the District 1 singles champion and Lin as the 2nd place singles place in District 1.

In doubles, juniors Mari Brittle and Alex Mignogna, 3rd in District 1, seniors Emilia Garibay Romero and Emma Okamura 4th in District 1.

The boys' season and qualifying tournaments were held last Fall in October 2023. They had been training and preparing through Winter and early Spring. Coach Arnie Moreno felt that they had worked hard to prepare and were ready to compete at state. All five boys return to next Fall's team.

Coach Moreno told each player on both teams to be proud of their accomplishment and not only meet the challenge but enjoy every moment, win or lose.
He reminded them that there are many players on their team and other teams that would trade places with them for the opportunity to be competing at high level at state. In the tournament, they are the top 16 players and doubles teams in the state 3A division.

The first day's match started with Garibay and Okamura losing a hard fought, loser out match, to a very tough Lakeside team. They played their best and enjoyed playing against a very good level of competition.

Eli Sheffield and Riley Boyd - 7th in doubles

In singles, Gettmann, Lin and Drake all won their first-round matches. The doubles boys' teams, Kosten and Gordon, Sheffield and Boyd won their first round with great teamwork and shot making. Brittle and Mignogna lost a very close three set match to a Tumwater team, but were in double elimination, and still in the tournament. They lost their next match that had many close points and games, and were out of the tournament.

The boys' team surprised many opponents and won hard fought matches to win a second match on the Saturday round of medals matches. After losing hard fought quarterfinal matches, they all placed. Drake 7th, Kosten and Gordon 8th and Sheffield and Boyd 7th.

Rylie Gettman -8 and Emily Lin -7

Gettman and Lin also lost very close quarterfinal matches but won their next matches to advance to earn medals, Lin 7th and Gettmann 8th. This was the second straight year that each earned an award to be in the top eight players in the state 3A.

After many close matches and amazing tennis play, the Shorewood boys won the 4th in State Team trophy and the girls placed 5th.

Coach Moreno and Shorewood JV Coach JT Mashman, who assisted with the coaching, were very proud of the teams' high level of play, their outstanding sportsmanship and support for each other.

The Shorewood parents and community were very well represented with many family members and friends who were there to add support.

The Shorewood girls tennis team continued its successful season at the WesCo South League tournament, Edmonds-Woodway High School tennis courts. The top five players from the tournament would advance to next week’s District 1 tournament at Snohomish High School courts.

Shorewood had two singles entries, number 1 seed junior Rylie Gettmann and number 3 seed senior Emily Lin.

In doubles were juniors Mari Brittle and Alex Mignogna, seniors Emma Okamura and Emilia Garibay Romero.

The first day of the tournament started with Shorewood winning all of their first-round matches.

The second day of the tournament started with the semifinal matches featuring a match between the number 2 seed, from Mountlake Terrace, junior Katarina Moye and Shorewood s Emily Lin.

Moye had only one loss during the season to Gettmann from Shorewood.

Lin controlled the match from the beginning to the end with great groundstrokes and overall strategy.

The win moved her into the singles championship match versus her teammate Gettmann, who defeated her Meadowdale opponent.

Defending league doubles champions, Brittle and Mignogna cruised easily to the doubles final as teammates, Garibay Romero and Okamura survived a very tough three set semifinals victory over their Edmonds-Woodway opponents.

The singles and doubles league championship finals for singles and doubles became an all Shorewood event.

Gettmann was able to defeat Lin in two sets. In the upset of the tournament, Shorewood’s number two doubles team, Garibay Romero and Okamura defeated the defending league champs, Brittle and Mignogna in two sets.

All six Shorewood players advanced to the District 1 tournament as either number 1 or number 2 seeds.

The top four advance to the WIAA 3A State Tennis tournament in Vancouver, Washington, held at the Vancouver Tennis Center. Last year Shorewood qualified all six of the tournament entries to state and will try to match that accomplishment. Shorewood placed third at state in team standings behind Mercer Island and Lakeside.
