Prison Banned Books Week at Third Place Books September 22-28, 2024

Tuesday, September 17, 2024

During Prison Banned Books Week (Sept. 15-21) and Banned Books Week (Sept. 22-28), a generous donor will match your purchase when you buy a book from this wish-list for Books to Prisoners.

Books to Prisoners is a Seattle-based nonprofit that has been sending free books to individuals in prison for over 50 years.

They do this because they believe that reading is an essential element of education, self-empowerment, and in breaking the cycle of recidivism.

Support this effort by buying a book for Books to Prisoners that will foster a love of reading, or illuminate a new path forward, or supply tools for post-prison success.

Link to the Wish List here

This wish list is valid through August 20, 2025.

Third Place Books is located on the upper level to Town Center, intersection Bothell and Ballinger Way NE, Lake Forest Park 98155.

New Ridgecrest Books adds another vibrant business to Ridgecrest Neighborhood

Monday, March 25, 2024

Ridgecrest Books has a huge selection for a small store

By Diane Hettrick
Photos by Steven H. Robinson

Ridgecrest Books is another vibrant business in the small but unique Ridgecrest neighborhood.

The small business district in the Ridgecrest neighborhood at 5th NE and NE 165th is the closest Shoreline has to an old-fashioned downtown. Ridgecrest boasts a "coffee shop you can walk to" with a generous seating area. It has the only movie theatre in Shoreline. A friendly pub and restaurant are side by side.

They have new and used books, classics and recent books

And now it has a small and neighborhood friendly bookstore, of the kind put out of business by the big box stores of a decade ago, which were in turn put out of business by Amazon.

Becky is happy to assist customers find the perfect book

Ridgecrest Books is owned by Becky Merilatt and Kevin Roberts. Becky and Kevin were long-time employees of the Secret Garden Bookstore, which closed its Greenlake location and later reopened in Ballard.

Becky attempted to purchase Secret Garden and when that was unsuccessful, she and Kevin decided to open their own store in Ridgecrest where Becky lives.

They are delighted with the warm welcome and community support they have received.

Reporter Steve Robinson said "While there I witnessed the customer service and assistance to shoppers looking for a book to read for them or their children."

Children's book nook with table and chairs

There is an inviting nook of children’s books with table and chairs. They have added a shelf of puzzles, which are so popular that Becky expects to expand the section. A new section of Manga books makes the kids happy. You can even buy a t-shirt with the store logo.

Polite dogs are welcome to browse before or after getting a treat at The Barkery.

Ridgecrest Books is open at 512 NE 165th St, Shoreline, WA 98155. Open 11am to 7pm Tuesday-Sunday and closed on Monday. Phone 206-644-7105.

Updated: Open Sunday, closed Monday.

Books: The Short Bible: A Chronological Summary of the Old and New Testaments

Tuesday, January 30, 2024

Many struggle to read the Bible to its entirety as they find it long, complicated, hard to read and not organized in chronological order.

Puget Sound resident Peter J. Bylsma has spent years summarizing complex issues and putting them into lay terms. His debut book, “The Short Bible: A Chronological Summary of the Old and New Testaments,” offers an innovative and easy-to-understand guide to understanding the Bible.

In the book, Dr. Bylsma summarizes the books of the Old and New Testaments in 25 easy-to-read chapters, capturing the epic stories, characters and main ideas.

Dr. Bylsma provides a clear explanation of the Bible’s most important themes as many of them relate to current world events and personal struggles.

Social, economic and political issues as well as other topics such as discrimination, power, justice, truth, freedom and money are all part of current conversations around the world and are discussed throughout the Bible.

Peter J. Bylsma earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Wheaton College, and a master’s degree in public administration and a doctorate in education leadership and policy from the University of Washington.

Dr. Bylsma served 10 years in Christian agencies before working 30 years in public sector positions at international, federal, state and local levels. He has researched many topics in an objective and nonpartisan manner and summarized the issues for busy leaders. Dr. Bylsma currently resides in the Puget Sound region of Washington state where he has lived for the past 24 years.
