Monster Mini Golf coming to Mountlake Terrace

Monday, August 17, 2026

Once CompUSA, then Gene Juarez, now the future home of
Monster Mini Golf

Coming soon to the Gateway Place business district in Mountlake Terrace: Monster Mini Golf, a glow-in-the-dark indoor family entertainment center.

According to the company’s website, the Mountlake Terrace location will feature:
  • 18-hole glow-in-the-dark miniature golf
  • Arcade games
  • Mini bowling
  • Laser tag
  • Party and event rooms
The website lists a summer 2026 opening.

The approximately 15,000-square-foot space was previously home to the Gene Juarez Academy North Campus, which operated there from 2013 until 2022 before relocating to Federal Way.

Before Gene Juarez, the space was occupied by CompUSA from about 1994 to 2007.

After years of computers and cosmetology, the space is now taking a swing in a whole new direction. And if all goes according to par, Monster Mini Golf should be teeing off soon.

Backroads Tour to present final tour date in Seattle on July 4 at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard

Wednesday, June 17, 2026

The national Backroads Tour is coming to Seattle on July 4, 2026 at the Tractor Tavern in Ballard, 5213 Ballard Ave NW, Seattle, WA 98107, making a statement on the 250th birthday of our nation, that opposing fascism means standing up for shared freedoms and human dignity.

While the government struggles to find artists for their 250th celebrations, the Backroads Tour has been rolling across the nation from Georgia to the midwest, amplifying rural and rural-adjacent voices for change.

This final stop on the tour will celebrate the rural underdogs who have driven progress in rural America throughout our nation’s history.

Artists performing include:
  • Melissa Carper - grew up between Nebraska and Eureka Springs, AR, and is one of the pre-eminent voices of queer honky-tonk coming out of Texas today
  • Jontavious Willis - grew up and still lives in deep rural Georgia, bringing acclaimed country blues that’s seen him collaborating with everyone from Taj Mahal to Keb’ Mo’.
  • The Reverent Marigold - from the farmlands around Davis, California, The Reverent Marigold’s powerful trans folk punk touches on everything from religious faith to queer rage.

The Backroads Tour - Seattle
Tractor Tavern Matinee Show

Tickets online here

Presented by Rural Progress, Backroads is a national music and culture campaign that brings artists, organizers, and local leaders to small towns across the country, turning overlooked spaces into vibrant community commons.

Through concerts, storytelling, and shared joy, we’re reclaiming country music’s and rural America’s roots as a force for connection across race, class, and place. At a moment of deep division, Backroads shows what rural power and progress look like when people come together, one town at a time.

Seattle’s Tractor Tavern is a space known for welcoming a wide range of music, from roots rock to folk and alt-country, bringing together diverse audiences through shared cultural experiences.

That spirit of inclusivity mirrors the night’s message: rural and urban people alike can build community based not on fear but on mutual respect, empathy, and common purpose.

“America was born in rebellion,” says Matt Hildreth, Executive Director of Rural Progress.

“That revolutionary spirit didn’t live only in Philadelphia. It took root in small towns, labor halls, churches, community centers and on front porches where neighbors gathered to debate, organize and demand a say in their own future.”

Theater Review: A Delightfully Wilde Adventure: Murder on West Moon Street Charms with Wit and Whimsy

Tuesday, June 2, 2026

Murder on West Moon Street
by Rob Urbinati
directed by Eric Lewis
May 29 - June 21, 2026
Fri/Sat 7:30pm;
Sun 2:00pm

Theater review by Kindle Carpp

Murder on West Moon Street is a brisk and witty comedy by Rob Urbinati, adapted from Oscar Wilde's short story Lord Arthur Savile's Crime.

Set in 1899 London, this delightful romp follows a naïve young aristocrat who learns from a palm reader that his future includes murder.

Convinced that he must fulfill this grim prophecy before marrying the woman he loves, Arthur embarks on a wildly misguided quest to commit the deed.

Rather than presenting a traditional whodunit, the play cleverly turns the mystery on its head by asking a far more entertaining question: will he actually manage to do it?

Filled with sharp dialogue, quick pacing, and delightfully unexpected twists, Murder on West Moon Street delivers an evening of laughter from beginning to end.

The production embraces Wilde's trademark wit while leaning fully into the absurdity of its premise. Every failed scheme and mistaken assumption builds upon the last, creating a cascade of comic complications that keeps the audience eagerly anticipating what could possibly go wrong next.

One of the production's greatest strengths is its balance of mystery and farce. While the story revolves around murder, the tone remains consistently playful and lighthearted. The humor is rooted not only in clever writing but also in impeccable timing, with surprises arriving at just the right moment to keep the energy high throughout the evening.

At the center of the chaos is Ian L. Wright as Lord Arthur Savile. Wright plays Arthur with charming incompetence, completely sincere in his determination yet hopelessly unequipped for a life of crime. His earnestness makes the character immensely likable, and the audience cannot help but root for him even as each new plan unravels in spectacular fashion.

Natasha Halfin brings warmth and charm to the role of Sybil Merton. As Arthur's devoted fiancée, she serves as one of the few voices of reason in an increasingly ridiculous world. Her grounded performance provides a welcome contrast to the escalating madness surrounding her.

Ingrid Sanai Buron is wonderfully sharp as Lady Windermere. Her biting observations are delivered with impeccable timing, and her criticisms often land disguised as compliments. Burton captures the character's wit and social sophistication, earning laughs with nearly every appearance.

Eric Hartley gives an engaging performance as Charles, Arthur's faithful valet. Hartley embodies the ideal Victorian butler with poise, discretion, and intelligence. His understated humor and steady presence provide an effective counterbalance to Arthur's increasingly frantic antics.

Melanie Calderwood is a comic standout as Lady Clem. Her eruptions of outrage and eccentricity are hilarious and perfectly suited to the play's heightened style. As the relative seemingly most likely to become Arthur's victim, she steals many of the production's funniest moments.

Colleen Davis brings boundless energy to Jane Percy. Her rapid-fire delivery and delightfully unhinged physicality create a character who is both unpredictable and endlessly entertaining. Every entrance injects fresh momentum into the production.

Jaret Miller makes a memorable impression as the mysterious chiromancer, Mr. Podgers. His delightfully over-the-top performance sets the entire story in motion and adds an extra layer of theatrical fun to the proceedings. Miller understands exactly how much scenery to chew and does so with enthusiasm.

David Hayes rounds out the ensemble with a wonderfully eccentric turn as Herr Wincelkopf. His accent, physical comedy, and delightfully anarchic spirit make the character an audience favorite. Hayes embraces the absurdity of the role and helps propel the production toward its increasingly outrageous conclusion.

What makes Murder on West Moon Street especially enjoyable is the company's wholehearted embrace of theatrical storytelling. The play revels in mistaken assumptions, larger-than-life personalities, and delightfully improbable twists without ever becoming cynical.

Instead, the production invites audiences to simply enjoy the ride and rewards them with clever dialogue, engaging performances, and constant laughter.

Beneath the comedy lies a playful satire of superstition, social expectations, and the extraordinary lengths people will go to in pursuit of happiness. Yet the production never loses sight of its primary goal: entertaining its audience.

By the final curtain, viewers are left with memorable characters, plenty of laughs, and the satisfaction of having spent an evening in a wonderfully eccentric world.

Delightfully absurd from start to finish, Murder on West Moon Street is a theatrical misadventure well worth taking.

Theatre Review: The Mysterious Affair at Styles delivers: Poirot, Poison, and Plenty of Suspicion

  • Sundays at 2pm.

Review by Kindle Carpp

Agatha Christie’s The Mysterious Affair at Styles, adapted by Kate Danley from Christie’s beloved novel, brings audiences back to the very first case of the iconic detective Hercule Poirot.

Set in 1916 during World War I, the story follows the recovering Hastings as he arrives at Styles Manor, the home of his friend John Cavendish.

What begins as a quiet stay quickly spirals into chaos when John’s mother dies suddenly from poisoning in the middle of the night. With suspicion falling on nearly everyone in the household, Poirot must untangle a web of secrets, lies, and motives before the killer strikes again.

Christie’s mastery of misdirection remains as entertaining as ever. Red herrings, shifting suspicions, and carefully planted clues keep the audience constantly reevaluating every character and every interaction. Even knowing the story beforehand does little to lessen the suspense.

Watching the production becomes an interactive experience, inviting the audience to play detective alongside Poirot. Throughout the performance, I found myself repeatedly changing my mind about who the murderer might be, only to discover once again that Christie is always several steps ahead.

Else Buckley (Lawrence Cavendish), Chris Ensweiler (Hercule Poirot), Amit Rosenberg (Alfred Inglethorp). Photo by Dale Sutton

Danley’s adaptation remains faithful to the original novel while skillfully modernizing the dialogue and pacing for contemporary audiences. The updated cadence allows the story to move briskly without losing its early twentieth century atmosphere or charm.

The regular fourth wall breaks add an especially playful touch, creating moments where the audience feels personally invited into the mystery. These moments enhance the humor and warmth of the production while preserving the intrigue at the heart of Christie’s story.

The cast embraces both the comedy and tension of the material with enthusiasm and precision. Seamus Smith gives John Cavendish a grounded and steady presence that helps anchor the increasingly chaotic events unfolding around him. Smith captures John’s growing unease well, balancing familial loyalty with mounting suspicion as the mystery deepens.

Else Buckley shines as Lawrence Cavendish, perfectly embodying the role of the overlooked second son. Buckley balances quiet resentment with weary acceptance, giving Lawrence an emotional depth that makes him especially compelling to watch. Their performance subtly reveals the frustrations simmering beneath Lawrence’s reserved exterior while still maintaining the character’s understated charm.

As Dorcas, Nina McKinstry brings warmth and heart to the production. McKinstry makes Dorcas instantly endearing through expressive reactions and impeccable timing. Her performance captures exactly the right balance of horror, concern, curiosity, and fascination as the events at Styles Manor unfold around her.

Duncan Thorvilson is delightfully personable as Hastings, bringing an affable charm that makes him easy to root for throughout the story. Thorvilson captures Hastings’ earnestness and occasional distraction beautifully, creating a character who feels both relatable and sincere. His chemistry with the rest of the cast helps maintain the lively rhythm of the production.

Chris Ensweiler (Hercule Poirot) and Nina McKinstry (Dorcas)

In the pivotal role of Poirot, Chris Ensweiler delivers a standout performance that elevates the entire production. Ensweiler fully embodies the famous detective, from Poirot’s precise physicality and brisk movements to his constant straightening of ties and rearranging of objects. His light French accent feels natural and restrained, never overpowering the performance. More importantly, Ensweiler captures Poirot’s intelligence, theatricality, and quiet confidence in a way that keeps the audience captivated from beginning to end. It is a performance filled with detail, discipline, and undeniable charisma.

The ensemble as a whole is exceptionally well cast, with each performer fully committing to the distinct personalities, secrets, and emotional undercurrents of their characters. The production succeeds because every actor contributes to the atmosphere of uncertainty while still creating believable and engaging relationships onstage.

Visually, the production is equally impressive. The lighting design cleverly simulates lighting pouring through windows using only stage lighting, helping establish both mood and location with elegance and creativity. These lighting choices subtly heighten the tension of the mystery while adding visual depth to the scenes.

Set designer Thomas “Rex” Goulding creates an inventive and highly functional set that transforms fluidly between multiple locations within Styles Manor. Rotating furniture pieces and cleverly mobile set elements allow the production to shift seamlessly between rooms while maintaining the momentum of the story. The result is a visually dynamic staging that keeps the audience immersed in the world of the play.

Costume designer Diane Johnston also deserves recognition for creating costumes that are both period appropriate and visually striking. The flattering tailoring and rich color choices add sophistication and personality to each character while helping reinforce the elegance of Christie’s world.

Filled with humor, intrigue, strong performances, and inventive staging, The Mysterious Affair at Styles proves that a classic mystery never goes out of style. By the time Poirot gathers everyone together for the final reveal, the audience is happily swept along for one last twist in a thoroughly entertaining evening of theater.
