Seattle Area Feline Rescue invites community to support homeless kittens through 2nd Annual Kitten Shower Event

Sunday, March 15, 2026

SAFe Rescue invites the community to join them in celebrating the start of kitten season at its 2026 Kitten Shower on Saturday, March 28, 2026. The festivities will take place from 3:00 to 6:00pm at the rescue in Ballinger Village at 20226 Ballinger Way NE, Shoreline WA 98155.

Kitten season, which begins in early spring, brings a sharp increase in orphaned, abandoned, and neonatal kittens requiring round-the-clock care. SAFe’s Kitten Shower is a family-friendly event designed to rally community support, collect essential in-kind and monetary donations, and ensure the rescue is equipped with the resources this vulnerable population needs.

Throughout the afternoon, guests will have the opportunity to:
  • Enjoy games and educational stations
  • Learn more about fostering and volunteering opportunities, and how to get involved
  • Help name future arrivals at the kitten naming station
  • Enjoy light refreshments in a festive, family friendly atmosphere
… and more!

Admission is free. Guests are encouraged to RSVP in advance and to donate from the registry. Guests may also add to their experience by purchasing access to special kitten petting rooms. Kitten petting room tickets are available for purchase through SAFe Rescue’s website.

For those unable to attend in person, support is still possible through SAFe Rescue’s online Kitten Shower Donation Registry. The registry includes urgently needed supplies such as formula, heating pads, bottles, medications, and enrichment items for kittens in foster homes.

“Kittens make up 75-80% of all the foster cats that we care for in a year. We hope to increase this number in 2026,” says Michelle Flowers, SAFe’s Foster Manager.
“Kittens under 8 weeks are the most likely to get sick, requiring the most care and medical attention. Our Kitten Shower brings in essential care items so that our foster homes can provide the best care, and raises essential funds for medical tests and treatments - as well as preventative care.”

With kitten intake expected to rise quickly in the coming weeks, SAFe Rescue encourages community members to RSVP early and consider contributing critical supplies that will sustain foster caregivers throughout the season.

RSVP, purchase kitten petting room tickets, donate to kitten in need or donate supplies here

This event is made possible by our a-meow-zing sponsors: Suzan M Shayler from Edward Jones, Metlife, Royal Canin, and Lake Forest Park Veterinary Hospital!

Business Spotlight: Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) - Giving Every Cat a Second Chance

Saturday, January 17, 2026

Local Spotlight brought to you by Kate Ledbetter, DestinationShoreline.com

Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) - Giving Every Cat a Second Chance

Tucked along Ballinger Way in Shoreline is a place where compassion changes lives every single day. Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue) exists to ensure that every cat—no matter their background—has the opportunity to feel safe, loved, and valued. What began as a response to an urgent community need has grown into a trusted nonprofit rooted in the belief that helping animals and supporting people go hand in hand. Through rescue, care, adoption, and community support, SAFe Rescue continues to be a lifeline for cats and the humans who love them.

Q & A with Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue)

Q: What inspired you to start?

A: SAFe Rescue was founded in response to a clear and urgent community need: too many cats were entering shelters without enough resources or safe options. What began as a small, compassionate effort to help homeless cats grew into an organization rooted in the belief that every cat has inherent value and that supporting people is a vital part of helping animals thrive. That community-centered spirit continues to guide SAFe’s work today—combining rescue, care, adoption, and supportive services so cats and their families can stay together whenever possible.

Q: What service do you provide for our community?
A: SAFe Rescue saves feline lives by taking in homeless cats, giving them the care they need, finding them loving homes, and supporting their human companions.

Q: What inspires you each day?
A: We see cats come in from all walks of life—some had human companions that could no longer care for them, some lived outdoors without dependable shelter, others are vulnerable newborns. No matter where a kitty comes from, through the hard work and dedication of our community, we get to watch these cats transform and thrive. Hearing a previously anxious kitty purr for the first time, watching a cat run and play after a long illness, receiving a happy adoption update with photos of a blissed-out cat…these are just some of the rewarding moments that texture our day-to-day operations.

Q: How do you approach customer service, and what sets you apart?
A: SAFe takes a low-barrier, interview-based approach to adoptions in order to authentically match people with their new furry family members. Every adopter gets a follow-up from our Retention Specialist to make sure everyone is settling in well. We also help keep pets in homes through our Community Support programs.

Q: How does your business support or give back to the local community?
A: Supporting cats means supporting the people that love them. Adoption isn’t the end of the story, and we work hard to make sure families with pets have the resources they need no matter their economic circumstances. Our Pet Pantry provides essential food, enrichment items, and other supplies to hundreds of our neighbors each year, while our twice-a-month Community Wellness Clinics offer a range of veterinary services at a low cost to income-qualified families. In 2025, we also introduced affordable feline spay and neuter surgeries, which we will continue to roll out this year!

Q: What’s your next upcoming event?
A: We are almost in kitten season—the time of year where we see more litters being born. In anticipation of all the little tails and whiskers that will soon fill the Rescue, we are throwing a Kitten Shower! Like a human baby shower, this is a chance to collect care supplies to set our foster families up for success (think feeding syringes instead of bottles). But it’s also an adorable excuse for a party! Keep your eyes on our website for event details.

Feline trivia time! Did you know…
Cats have an organ on the roof of their mouth that allows them to “taste” smells! It’s called Jacobsen’s organ, and if you’ve ever seen a kitty sniff and then hold their mouth open as if in surprise, you’ve seen that organ at work. There’s even a term for that expression: the Flehmen response! The more you know. =^..^=

Canopy Cat Rescue gets Sabrina out of a tree in Lake Forest Park

Saturday, December 13, 2025

Sabrina was rescued from a tree in her yard in Lake Forest Park

Canopy Cat Rescue climbs trees to rescue cats. They retrieve hundreds every year, from all over the state. Call them at 1-877-721-MEOW when in need.

CCR does night rescues, with the one caveat being that it is a super-friendly cat. Otherwise, they say it’s best to wait till daylight.

They just published a compilation of seven cats that they "had the opportunity to meet in a tree at night over the last few months."

One was a local.

Sabrina, a calico kitten from Lake Forest Park, climbed a big cypress next to her house. The lighting for her photo was perfect!

CCR goes all over the state to rescue kitties, who notoriously can climb up - but not down.

They are arborists by trade, so they do spend a lot of time in trees. They do not charge for their rescue services but do accept tax-deductible donations.

Hidden Gem Cat Rescue merges with Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe)

Sunday, October 26, 2025

Toto

A Big boost for Tiny Kittens - Hidden Gem Cat Rescue has merged with Seattle Area Feline Rescue. The merger will increase Seattle Area Feline Rescue’s capacity to provide lifesaving care for the youngest and most vulnerable population of homeless kittens.

Shoreline, WA – Seattle Area Feline Rescue (SAFe Rescue), a nonprofit, no-kill cat rescue based in Shoreline's Ballinger Village, is thrilled to let the cat out of the bag about their major new development. Effective October 20, 2025, SAFe Rescue has integrated a former partner shelter, Hidden Gem Cat Rescue, into their operations.

Prior to this merger, Hidden Gem operated entirely out of foster homes, with an emphasis on the intake and care of orphaned neonate kittens, known colloquially as “bottle babies.”

Joining with SAFe Rescue offers the team from Hidden Gem a physical location to continue cultivating life-saving services. Likewise, uniting with Hidden Gem’s network of trained caregivers enables SAFe Rescue to expand the reach and scope of their existing foster programs and community services.

Merging with Hidden Gem allows SAFe Rescue to widen this focus on an especially vulnerable segment of feline populations: orphaned newborn kittens. This comes at a time of growing need in Washington state as well as the country, as large numbers of unaltered cats produce litters with higher mortality risks if left in the wild. These babies are incredibly fragile, requiring round the clock attention and consistent medical support.

Dorothy Gale

Hidden Gem’s integration into SAFe Rescue brings a new crop of experienced foster families to the fold. While SAFe’s fosters are no strangers to the highs and lows of neonate care, this combination of efforts promises a mutually beneficial give and take through education and collaboration. The SAFe and Hidden Gem communities look forward to navigating the transition together.

“Bottle baby kittens need a special kind of foster–someone patient, committed, and ready to provide care at all hours,” says Sam Winchester, Hidden Gem’s former Executive Director. “Because their care requires so many resources, rescues rely on our community to help give these babies the love and support they need to flourish and find loving homes.”

“This merger will help us to increase the number of orphaned neonates we are able to save,” adds Michelle Flowers, SAFe’s Foster Program Manager.

“And at the same time, we will help meet the needs of our partners who need places for these babies to go to continue care and find homes. We are blessed with such a generous and enthusiastic community!”

Oz

Donate to help Rescue Bottle Babies

To further develop SAFe’s neonatal support during this transition, local philanthropic association Svanee’s Foundation will be matching up to $20,000 in donations made on behalf of Rescue bottle babies. This means all gifts made to SAFe’s Bottle Baby Campaign (accessible through this link or directly from SAFe’s website) will make double the difference for fragile newborn felines.

SAFe Rescue is raising essential funds to expand capacity to meet the intensive needs of bottle babies.

Svanee’s Foundation will match up to $20,000 in donations made to SAFe’s Bottle Baby Campaign, doubling the impact for neonatal kittens

Canopy Cat Rescue retrieves LFP kitty from cedar tree

Thursday, July 10, 2025

Zappa was surprised to see Shaun join him in the tree

"Zappa, the big black kitty from Lake Forest Park, was only about 25 ft up in a cedar tree. He was a little surprised at how quickly I climbed up to him and he gave me this expression."

25 ft is hardly a challenge for the arborists of Canopy Cat Rescue. A more normal climb is 85 ft up into fragile branches swaying in the wind.

Shaun and Tom of Canopy Cat Rescue
Shaun and Tom created Canopy Cat Rescue in 2009 after discovering how very difficult it was for people to find help for their cats stuck high in trees.

"As cat people ourselves, we know how horrible it feels when a cat is missing and then cries for help are heard high up in a tree."

Learn more about their services - and donate if you can.

They have expanded their services to the entire state, working on a donation basis to save cats stranded in trees. When they are not rescuing cats, they are professional arborists.

If you need their help, give them a call:1-(877)-721-MEOW x1
