Seattle man sentenced to 20 years for sex trafficking on Aurora

Wednesday, July 8, 2026

The 'Aurora Track'
Seattle – A 38-year-old Seattle man was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Seattle to 20 years in prison for five federal felonies connected to his sex trafficking of a minor and an adult woman, announced First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd.

In April 2026, a judge and jury convicted Shante Broady of sex trafficking an adult victim through force, threats of force, fraud, and coercion; sex trafficking a minor; transporting both the adult victim and the minor victim for prostitution; and unlawful possession of a firearm.

At the sentencing hearing U.S. District Judge John C. Coughenour said the twenty-year sentence was justified by “the violence of events in the case” and was in line with other sex trafficking sentences imposed in the Western District of Washington.

“Shante Broady is one of six defendants involved in sex trafficking this office has prosecuted in the last six months.
"Like many sex traffickers in this district, Mr. Broady took a minor to north Aurora Avenue to sell her to sex buyers.
"This area – which traffickers refer to as “the track” or “the blade” – is a dangerous hub for commercial sexual exploitation of children and adults and associated violent and dangerous criminal activity,” said First Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil Floyd.
“This office is working tirelessly with our state and federal partners to assist potential victims, identify traffickers, and reduce crime in that known sex trafficking area. This twenty-year sentence, alongside other federal and state prosecutions, are helping to remove some of the most violent traffickers off the streets for a lengthy period.”

Records in the case and court testimony detail Broady’s involvement in transporting and harboring a minor victim who had run away from a boarding school in another state. The minor victim was encountered on North Aurora Avenue and taken into custody by law enforcement. She was ultimately safely returned to family members.

Information obtained from Broady’s phone demonstrated that he was aware of her age and that he was directing her how to interact with potential sex buyers. Broady was convicted of sex trafficking this minor.

In a second short bench trial after the first, prosecutors presented evidence that Broady possessed a firearm, even though he was prohibited due to convictions in Stafford County, Virginia for Burglary of a Dwelling while Armed with Deadly Weapon, Robbery, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, and Attempted Robbery.

When police searched Broady’s residence on April 11, 2025, they recovered a black Ruger LCP, .380 caliber firearm with a loaded magazine. Judge Coughenour found he committed that crime.

In addition to the 20-year prison term Judge Coughenour ordered that he be on 15 years of supervised release following his prison term.

King County Prosecutor: What’s driving the crisis on Aurora and what we’re doing about it

Saturday, July 4, 2026

Location of incidents where the prosecutor filed charges

King County prosecutor Leesa Manion proposes harsher penalties for the johns who patronize prostitution.

Children, women and others from vulnerable communities continue to be exploited along Aurora because they are in high demand by sex buyers. And, in turn, the demand for trafficked people is what drives the associated gun violence and many other crimes along Aurora.

Our office is fighting for state legislation to protect and increase resources for trafficking survivors by holding sex buyers accountable for using their money to buy sexual access to vulnerable people.

Until that changes, we will continue to see the wild west of human trafficking, violence, and misery taking place along Aurora.

What the prosecutor's office is currently doing to address the crisis

#1 First and foremost, we will continue to consistently file felony cases of crimes from along Aurora.

Between N 80th St and N 145 St along Aurora, we filed 143 felonies in the first five months of 2026: cases of felony assault, burglary, drive by shooting, and organized retail theft. We are also consistently charging human traffickers and pimps.

#2 For the past two legislative sessions, we have pushed for lawmakers to make “patronizing prostitution” a Class C Felony (currently it carries less of a penalty than stealing a candy bar).

We will keep fighting to pass this legislation, which will help stop the extreme physical and sexual violence against trafficked children and women along Aurora (and throughout King County) and stem the crime and violence that results from the unchecked demand of the individuals purchasing sex from vulnerable people.

This demand is what is driving the lucrative market for buying and selling human beings along Aurora.

The legislature didn’t pass this bill in 2026, but we aren’t giving up, and in the meantime, we will keep doing our part to prosecute felony crime along Aurora.

Search for domestic violence suspect has Shoreline connection

Suspect and vehicle

David Rose Fox 13 published a notice about the search for a domestic violence suspect.

Snohomish County Sheriff's deputies are asking for the public's help to find 32 year old Deivi Garcon Donado.

He is believed to be driving a silver 2010 Ford Fusion with Washington license plate CVF8854. Troopers say the plate belongs to another vehicle but has been attached to the Ford Fusion.

Call 911 if you see him or the car.

Garcon Donado was just in the Snohomish County jail last month for DV crimes in Lynnwood.

He was released on May 18th. Booked on the 17th for Malicious Mischief 3 DV and Assault 4 DV. Both of those are Gross Misdemeanor crimes.

Fox 13 published the background on this suspect, saying that he pushed a woman out of his car and drove off with her 6 year old son.

It was originally framed as an Amber Alert until it was discovered that he had dropped the boy at 5:30am in the front yard of a Shoreline friend of the mother. Mother and son were reunited. She does have significant injuries to her head and face.

Lynnwood sisters indicted for wide ranging wire fraud and identity theft scheme

Thursday, June 11, 2026

Seattle – One of two sisters who allegedly defrauded a national retailer and individuals by gift card and debit card fraud, appeared yesterday and pleaded not guilty to a 16-count indictment in U.S. District Court in Seattle, announced First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd.

Hayley Brown Lundquist, 30, of Snohomish County was ordered detained pending trial currently scheduled for August 3, 2026. Brown Lundquist’s sister, Samantha Fleischacker Gillihan, 34, of Arlington, was arrested last month and pleaded not guilty to the indictment. She was released on her personal recognizance.

“As alleged in the indictment, these two defendants cut a wide swath of fraud in Snohomish County,” said First Assistant Neil Floyd. “We put a priority on assisting local law enforcement who are struggling to put a stop to persistent offenders who continue to commit crimes despite local arrests.”

“This investigation demonstrates the importance of thorough local investigations and the value of strong partnerships across all levels of government,” said Lynnwood Police Chief Coleman Langdon.
“What began as a municipal investigation ultimately revealed criminal activity that extended beyond the scope and jurisdiction of a single agency. Through close coordination with federal authorities, investigators were able to leverage additional resources, expertise, and prosecutorial capabilities to pursue a more comprehensive response to the criminal conduct involved.”

“These subjects are charged with stealing tens of thousands of dollars by draining gift cards they had not purchased, as well as debit cards obtained by exploiting other people’s identities,” said W. Mike Herrington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI Seattle field office.
“The FBI and our law enforcement partners like the Lynnwood Police Department take wire fraud and identity theft seriously and are committed to holding fraudsters accountable.”

According to the indictment, the two defendants used a sequencing scheme to load gift card numbers on their smartphones – numbers for gift cards they never purchased that may have been purchased by others.

The women would use any balance on the gift cards to purchase merchandise and then return the merchandise for cash or other value. Some of the merchandise was sold to others. In all the pair defrauded the retailer of more than $80,000.

In addition to the gift card scheme, Brown Lundquist and her sister used stolen debit cards belonging to other people to purchase merchandise. At times they used fraudulently obtained debit cards along with fraudulently obtained gift cards to make purchases. At the time of her arrest, Brown Lundquist had identity information for numerous people in her possession.

Each woman is charged with multiple counts of wire fraud for their gift card and debit card scheme. Each is also charged with Aggravated Identity Theft for using a real person’s information in connection with the debit card purchases.

Finally, Brown Lundquist is charged with unlawful possession of a firearm because of her previous felony convictions in Snohomish County.

Neighbors led a march on Aurora calling attention to gunfire and prostitution

King County Prosecutor Leesa Manion

This past weekend, hundreds of neighbors marched along Aurora and I was there — joined by several members from my team — to march with them, share information about we are fighting for a safer Aurora, and listen.

I was joined by our Senior Deputy Prosecutors who specifically focus on human trafficking cases, and the Chief of our Gender Based Violence and Prevention Division.

First and foremost, we will continue to consistently file felony cases of crimes from along Aurora.

In addition, in the last legislative session, my office pushed for lawmakers to make “patronizing prostitution” a Class C Felony (currently it carries less of a penalty than stealing a candy bar). We will keep fighting to pass this legislation, which will
  1. help stop the extreme physical and sexual violence against trafficked children and women along Aurora (and throughout King County) and
  2. stem the crime and violence that results from the unchecked demand of the individuals purchasing sex from vulnerable people. This demand is what is driving the lucrative market for buying and selling human beings along Aurora.
Thank you to all of the neighbors and community members who came out to make their voices heard.

Making sure that firearms surrender orders are enforced

Saturday, May 23, 2026

Successful partnership reduced domestic violence crimes

Since 2018, King County’s Regional Domestic Violence Firearms Enforcement Unit has worked to ensure firearm surrender orders in domestic violence cases are actually enforced.

The partnership (between the King County Prosecutor’s Office, King County Sheriff’s Office, Seattle City Attorney’s Office & Seattle Police), has led to a 27% drop in crimes committed by people ordered to surrender firearms and reduced crime severity by more than 20%.

This is life-saving work for domestic violence survivors: because when domestic violence abusers have access to firearms the rate of intimate partner homicide increases by 500%.

David Rose: Help Major Crimes Unit with Shoreline cold case

Saturday, April 25, 2026

Shoreline resident Carol Edwards
went missing in 1981
MISSING: The King County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit is asking for your help to find 25-year-old Carol Edwards.

By David Rose, Q13 News

"Something happened to her and we want to know what that was," said King County Major Crimes Sgt. Jim Belford.

On January 2, 1981, Edwards disappeared after leaving her job at TV Guide in downtown Seattle near 6th and Stewart.

Detectives think she took a Metro bus to 165th and Aurora Avenue North, then walked to her residence in the 500 block of North 167th Street in Shoreline.

Investigators found her mail and keys inside on the counter. Her coat was found on the ground in the garage but no one has heard from her since that day and they suspect foul play.

She and her boyfriend had only lived there for three months when she disappeared. Her dog was still tied up out back when her boyfriend got home from work. The first thing she usually did when getting home was go and untie him.

Detectives have been working diligently on this case for more than four decades and are seeking new leads or tips.

"I was the last person who talked to her," said Head. "We were best friends."

Sally Head is Carol's older sister. She describes her sister as creative and quiet.

Carol Edwards went missing in 1981
They'd made plans for Sally to bring her daughter to visit Carol the next day. Then, a call changed everything.

"Her boyfriend called and said that he had got home and she wasn't there," Sally said.

He thought Carol was with her mother, but when she wasn't back the next morning, he called Sally.

"That's when Sally became concerned and that's when they called the police and initiated the missing person," Sgt. Belford said.

According to detectives, Carol's boyfriend is not considered a suspect and has been cooperative.

"He's submitted a polygraph, DNA swabs," Sgt. Belford said. "He has provided two statements and met with detectives along the way."

Carol's house on N 167th in Shoreline
In 1981, missing persons cases were handled differently. By the time a report was taken, critical hours had passed.

"So we started doing searches all around. We had a lot of people at the house looking for her,” said Head.

In 1981, Ted Bundy was already locked up in Florida.

When Gary Ridgway, the Green River Killer, started killing women in 1982, she wondered if Carol could have been his first victim. She wasn't.

"Gary Ridgway has been contacted and interviewed regarding Carol's disappearance. He is not considered a suspect," Sgt. Belford said.

But was there another serial killer targeting women in the North End?

"We have explored persons of interest and work to eliminate or include them as a pool of suspects involved in Carol's disappearance. At this point in time, there is not enough evidence that will allow us to charge anyone with Carol's disappearance," Sgt. Belford said.

They are hoping someone has info or has heard talk about the case that can point them to a suspect.

They do have some fragile DNA evidence. The science is advancing rapidly so he hopes one day it will be useful.

"I do believe that if we find her that dominoes will begin to fall and we will be able to identify who's responsible for her disappearance," Sgt. Belford said.

He wants to hear from anybody who worked with Carol at TV Guide. "If anybody remembers her and has had conversations with her and talked to her or were friends with her, I would be interested in talking to them," said Sgt. Belford.

For 45 years, holidays have come and gone, birthdays remembered.

"It's been hard just not knowing. And to see my mom, you know, you think of losing a child. That was difficult for her," said Head.

A family still waiting, a life interrupted, a mystery unsolved.

"We've done searches. We've done digs in areas of interest and have come up with nothing. At this point in time, I believe that someone out there has spoken to someone who has knowledge about this case. And we need that knowledge. We need to push this case forward. We need to find Carol and bring her home," Sgt. Belford said.

If you have any information on what happened to Carol Edwards or who may have been involved, you can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS, text the info through the P3 Tips App that you can download to your cell phone for free or go to P3Tips.com. You can also send an email to Det. Belford at mcutips@kingcounty.gov.

You can reach me at David.Rose@Fox.com.

Update: Burglary and fire in Lake Forest Park were connected

Wednesday, January 28, 2026

Electrical fire at this residence on Ballinger apparently led to resident being shot as a burglar at a nearby home. Photo courtesy Shoreline Fire

UPDATE: The burglary suspect who was shot by a resident of Lake Forest Park has been positively identified as a 40-year-old male who lives in the Ballinger Way NE home that caught fire in the early morning hours of 1/25/26.

Shortly after the residents were evacuated due to the fire, the male left the scene on foot.

At approximately 5:02am, officers responded to a reported burglary and shooting incident at the Woodglen Townhouse Condominiums, located just 200 yards away from the earlier house fire.

Officers located the same 40-year-old male in the backyard of a residence with a gunshot wound to the upper body.

The homeowner provided a statement to detectives indicating they feared for their safety and safety of others in the home when the suspect approached them holding an object in his hand.

The homeowner fired one round, striking the burglary suspect in the upper body.

Evidence recovered at the scene and from the injured suspect is consistent with the homeowner’s statements.

Following an investigation by fire investigators with the King County Sheriff’s Office, the cause of the Ballinger Way NE house fire was determined to be accidental and not the result of arson. The fire department reported that it was an electrical fire.

As of this update, the suspect remains in police custody at an area hospital while receiving medical treatment.
