Trump Account Enrollment Is Now Automatic: Will Your Child Be Included?

Thursday, October 8, 2026

Parents will still have to elect to receive the $1,000 seed contribution

By: Casey Clark
Published on: October 5, 2026

Key Takeaways*
  • According to temporary regulations published by the Department of Treasury, Trump Accounts will automatically enroll millions of eligible U.S. children born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, starting October 1.
  • Trump Accounts provide a one-time Department of the Treasury seed contribution of $1,000 invested in American companies, alongside allowable private after-tax contributions of up to $5,000 annually.
  • Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated during a Sept. 15 House Financial Services Committee hearing that auto-enrollment is projected to increase total program participation from 8 million to 70 million children.
  • Although the Department of Treasury creates auto-enrolled accounts for eligible children without requiring IRS Form 4547 submission, parents or guardians must still actively elect to receive the $1,000 seed contribution.

If you’ve been keeping an eye on the news, a recent change to Trump Account enrollment may have crossed your feeds. According to temporary regulations published Tuesday Sept. 29 by the Department of Treasury, Trump Accounts will begin auto-enrolling millions of children as early as Oct. 1. 2026.

Currently, 7 to 8 million American children are signed up for Trump Accounts. However, the number of youth enrolled is projected to reach 70 million with the new auto enrollment, according to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who stated this at a House Financial Services Committee hearing on Sept. 15.

The change could increase the number of children enrolled in Trump Accounts in 2026 by more than 60 million, according to the temporary regulations. Additionally, in the future, this could boost program enrollment by approximately 2 million accounts each year.

Many parents have already enrolled their children in Trump Accounts. Those who have not, may be eager to learn more about what this means for their family. For those parents, we have more information on Trump Accounts including what they are, and whether or not your child may be included in the new auto-enrollment.

What are Trump Accounts?

Trump Accounts are a type of investment account, most similar to an individual retirement account (IRA), created for children born during the latter half of the Trump Administration.

With a Trump Account, children are given a one-time seed of $1,000 from the Department of the Treasury which is invested in American companies. In this account, private contributions up to $5,000 after-tax dollars per year are allowed, and employers can contribute $2,500 to an employee’s account which isn’t counted as income.

Additionally, the $1,000 seed contribution does not count toward the $5,000 limit. Parents, grandparents, friends and other individuals can contribute within the $5,000 annual limit.

Certain states, governments and nonprofits can make contributions to groups of children that are not counted towards that annual limit, according to the IRS.

Those who are eligible for Trump Accounts include children:
  • Born between Jan. 1, 2025 and Dec. 31, 2028
  • Is a U.S. citizen
  • Have a valid social security number
It’s important to note the account is solely in the child’s name; however, parents are in control of it until the child turns 18-years-old. Once children become legal adults, they are free to keep the money in the account or withdraw it to put towards education or purchasing a home with the same tax advantages, according to the official Trump Accounts government website.

What’s new about the Trump Accounts?

Prior to automatic enrollment, parents had to establish an account by submitting IRS Form 4547, either with a tax return or through the IRS’s online system. Now, the Treasury automatically creates accounts for eligible children who do not already have one so they can forego the form. This doesn’t impact those who already have Trump Accounts or filled out Form 4547.

It’s important to note that although the Treasury is now creating the account, they cannot elect for the $1,000 to be contributed. A parent or guardian has to make the choice — so parents must still take action, but it’s easier than before. As of Oct. 1, information regarding this elective step has not been made available.

Also, these auto accounts provided can only receive two kinds of contributions: those provided by governments or charities, and the $1,000 pilot payment. This differs from accounts families opt into. Like a conventional Trump Account, they can also receive other contributions, up to $5,000.

Bottom line

Although children may be automatically enrolled into a Trump Account as of Oct. 1 (if they are eligible), parents still need to elect the $1,000 contribution.

Parents can reference trumpaccounts.gov and IRS.gov for more information regarding the new auto-enrollment as it becomes available.

A properly fitted backpack can help kids avoid pain

Sunday, October 4, 2026

Physical Therapist Jenny Chang explains
how to fit a backpack for a child

School-age kids are back at their desks and, for many, backpacks still carry their share of the class load. An improperly fitted or overloaded backpack can contribute to pain and poor posture. Physical therapist Jenny Chang shares what parents and students should know about choosing and wearing a backpack safely.

“[The backpack should be] 10% to 15% of the child's weight. So if you're looking at a first-grader, it should be 6 to 7 pounds,” Chang said.

A child’s complaints of pain or changes in posture are signs that a backpack is too heavy or a poor fit to their body.

“From a physical standpoint, their posture is one big one that I look at. If it's too heavy, if it's pulling them back, if they're leaning back or if it's so heavy that they're punching forward or they're leaning forward to counteract a weight,” those are red flags, Chang said.

Calling All Young Musicians! Join Our Young Persons' Open Mic

Sunday, September 20, 2026 from 3–5pm
Third Place Commons
Lake Forest Park WA 98155

Do you love to sing or play an instrument? Whether you're a seasoned performer or stepping onto the stage for the very first time, the Young Persons' Open Mic is a fun, welcoming opportunity for musicians ages 17 and under to share their talents in front of a supportive community.

No auditions, advance registration, or rehearsals are required - just show up, sign your name on the performer list beginning at 2:30pm, and get ready to perform!

What can I perform?

The Open Mic is designed for solo and duo musical performances. Performers are welcome to sing, play an instrument, or both. Third Place Commons is a family-friendly venue, so all performances should be appropriate for audiences of all ages and should not include partisan or explicitly religious material.

What equipment is provided?

Just bring your instrument if you play one! We'll provide:
  • Vocal and instrument microphones
  • Instrument cables
  • An upright piano
  • A guitar amplifier
  • Music stands
How long can I perform?

Performance time will depend on the number of participants. Each performer may perform up to three songs or 15 minutes, although performances may be limited to one or two songs if we have a full lineup.

Can I use a backing track?

Yes! You're welcome to perform with a pre-recorded backing track from your phone or other device. To ensure everything runs smoothly, please download your track ahead of time rather than streaming it over Wi-Fi.

Can an adult perform with me?

Absolutely! Adults are welcome to accompany young performers, provided the focus remains on the young musician.

Whether you're ready to perform or simply want to cheer on some incredible young talent, we hope you'll join us for an afternoon of music, encouragement, and community. We can't wait to see what our local young musicians have to share!

Jazz Walk - photos and survey

Friday, August 21, 2026

Booths, food, people, all to the tune of lively jazz music

By Diane Hettrick

This year's Jazz Walk was a wonderful combination of street scene and intimate indoor settings. Thanks to Rod Dembowski and Paul Barrera of North City Law; and the City of Shoreline for waiving the permit fee and giving the North City Neighborhood a grant to cover the cost of the outdoor stage.

Five blocks of 15th NE in the North City Business District were pedestrian only for the night.

Shear Jazz at the Frank Lumber outdoor venue

Foot Stompers - next to the Rotary Beer Garden

The street was full of music with Foot Stompers and Shear Jazz playing sets at a venue created from a parking lot at Frank Lumber annex.

Beer drinkers could sit inside the fence and sip a cool brew from the Rotary Clubs of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

In line at the food trucks

By far the biggest crowds were in the lines for the food trucks. Jazz Bites were available at street stations. Mexican Food and Jeremy's Chicken at the trucks. Cookie dough treats in another food truck.

Face painting - wearable art

A Creative in action

Kids had a good time creating art or wearing art from the very popular face painting set up. Some just used chalk to make street art.

Ranger Rearranger at Sodam Chicken

Inside venues were quiet as people absorbed the sounds. Several places had drinks and food. Others were just for the performances.

Pearl Django

Perennial favorite Pearl Django played at the North City Bistro.

It was far better to have a street closure than a pandemic closure. This was possibly the most popular Jazz Walk to date.

Plan on next year and we'll all do it again.

And speaking of next year, help the planners by taking this survey, which will be open for just a few days.

It doesn't take more than a minute or two: SURVEY

Roots of Empathy at Lake Forest Park and Brookside Elementary need volunteer Instructors

Wednesday, July 29, 2026

Roots of Empathy session at local elementary school

Roots of Empathy is an evidence-based, internationally recognized classroom program serving children ages 5–13. We’ve reached 1.2 million children globally with our school-based programs, and we have research to prove impact.

Roots of Empathy reduces aggression, increases sharing, caring, and inclusion, and promotes resilience, well-being, and positive mental health.

Our mission is to build caring, peaceful, and civil societies through the development of empathy in children and adults. Our vision is to change the world, child by child. We do this by having trained volunteer Instructors guide elementary school students in observing and connecting with a neighborhood baby and parent, building emotional literacy, empathy, and prosocial skills in young children.

Shoreline School District has been offering this program in various schools since 2009 and it is growing this next school year. Both Lake Forest Park and Brookside Elementary need volunteer Instructors to help deliver the program curriculum in the classroom.

We provide a fall training for Instructors and mentorship through the first year of instruction. Volunteers come from many backgrounds—former teachers, school counselors, therapists, social workers, parents, grandparents, or anyone familiar and enthusiastic about working with children.

If you would like more information or are interested in participating, please contact Roots of Empathy Program Manager, Melissa Cornwell, via email at mcornwell@rootsofempathy.org

An incredible day at the LFP PD Safety Day at Town Center

Wednesday, July 15, 2026

At the start of a race
What an incredible day at Lake Forest Park Police Department Safety Day event on Saturday July 11, 2026 at LFP Town Center!

Thanks to everyone who joined us, it was a tremendous success, with hundreds of smiling kids and parents coming together for a fun, interactive day focused on safety and community.

Checking out the public works vehicle

The kids had an amazing time racing through the bicycle and tricycle course, sharpening their soccer skills at the inflatable target, exploring our patrol vehicles and fire department apparatus, and climbing aboard Public Works tractors and backhoes.

There was truly something for everyone to enjoy.

Helmets were funded by LFP Rotary

A special thank you goes to the Lake Forest Park Rotary for their generous support.

LFP Rotary members pose with Mayor Tom French on the low-rider

Their contribution allowed us to provide hundreds of bicycle helmets and water safety vests to local families, helping keep our community's children safer both on land and in the water.

Mayor Tom French leading the way

A big thank you goes also to the city employees who assisted us in making this event a success.

Our officers had a great time meeting and interacting with everyone who attended. Events like these are a great reminder of the strong partnerships that make Lake Forest Park such a wonderful community.

An early start at the soccer target

Finally, a well-deserved recognition goes to Traffic Support Officer Amanda Johnson, whose leadership, dedication, and countless hours of planning made this event possible.
