Shorecrest Drama serves up another infectiously fun time with Something Rotten

Tuesday, May 14, 2024

A photo courtesy of Shorecrest Drama shows students serving up high-energy musical theater
with a side order of rotten breakfast-food puns.

By Oliver Moffat

From the first moment when the lights come up at the Shorecrest Performing Arts theater and a Shorecrest student sings the first lines of Something Rotten, you realize this cast has serious talent.

Shorecrest Drama has long delivered entertaining musical theater performances, but this show sets a new high note.

Something Rotten is a silly sendup of Shakespearean England that imagines what might have happened if modern musical theater somehow arrived hundreds of years before its time.

This plot setup unleashes the talents of the Shorecrest kids who perform over-the-top musical theater numbers complete with singing and tap-dancing. Some numbers are executed so well and with so much energy that the audience hooted and cheered.

The breakfast food based comedic puns may not be to everyone’s taste, but the cast commits fully to serving up the stinkers and landed every punch line.

The villain of Something Rotten is William Shakespeare - impressively performed as a narcissistic rock star in leather pants. The orchestra and the choreographer, Jenny McMurry, deserves a special round of applause.

The kids worked hard on this - the entire cast is full of energy and having an infectiously fun time. Seriously. Do yourself a favor and go see this. You’ll have a great time.

You can catch Something Rotten May 16, 17, 18 at 7:30pm and May 18 & 19 at 2:00pm

Tickets available online here

Update: Choreographer has been identified as Jenny McMurry.

Tickets to Shorecrest High School's spring musical, Something Rotten!, are on sale now through Brown Paper Tickets

Something Rotten! drops us into Renaissance London, where two struggling playwrights, Nick and Nigel Bottom, struggle to compete with the mega-star that is William Shakespeare.
When Nick pays a soothsayer for inspiration and learns that the future of theater involves something called a "musical," the Bottom Brothers attempt an endeavor they're sure will knock Shakespeare off his perch once and for all.

Hijinks, hilarity, and dazzling wordplay ensue, and theatre will never be quite the same!

A heads-up on content: Like any hearty Renaissance comedy, this one occasionally gets bawdy, with innuendo and some coarse language sprinkled throughout. Though much of it may fly over the heads of younger audience members, we consider this show rated PG-13.

Something Rotten! will run from Thursday, May 9 through Sunday, May 12 and again the following weekend, Thursday, May 16 through Sunday, May 19.
  • Evening performance times are 7:30pm on Thursdays-Saturdays;
  • matinees are at 2:00pm each Sunday
  • 2:00pm matinee prior to the evening show on Saturday, May 18.
Advance ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for children under 12/students with ASB card;
tickets purchased at the door on the day of performance are $20.

About the musical:
Rebellion is nigh in Matilda Jr., a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination! This story of a girl who dreams of a better life and the children she inspires will have audiences rooting for the "revolting children" who are out to teach the grown-ups a lesson.
Matilda has astonishing wit, intelligence... and special powers! She's unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher, the highly loveable Miss Honey. Matilda's school life isn't completely smooth sailing, however - the school's mean headmistress, Miss Trunchbull, hates children and just loves thinking up new punishments for those who don't abide by her rules.
But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts, and could be the school pupils' saving grace!

Packed with high-energy dance numbers and catchy songs, Matilda Jr. is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

Threepenny Opera opens Feb 28 at Shoreline Community College

Saturday, February 15, 2020

Mack the Knife
--Robbie Williams

Oh the shark baby has pretty teeth, dear
And he shows them pearly white
Just a jack knife has Mac Heath, dear
And he keeps it out of sight

When the shark bites with his teeth, dear
Scarlet billows start to spread
Fancy gloves though wears Macheath, dear
So there's not a trace of red

On the sidewalk, oh Sunday morning don't you know
Lies a body oozing life
Someone's sneaking round the corner
Could that be our boy Mack the knife?

Are you singing along yet? You might try to get it out of your head before you go to the actual performance. Audience participation is not encouraged.

The Threepenny Opera is a biting satire of the post-war rise of capitalism, organized crime, and a timeless tale of how the poor struggle to survive.

Kurt Weill's jazzy score provides a thrilling backdrop to this tale of debauchery and deception.

Based on The Beggar’s Opera, Threepenny Opera recounts the legend of Macheath (Mack the Knife), a charming and deadly crime lord on the verge of turning his illegal empire into a legitimate business.

When Macheath secretly marries young Polly Peachum, her father is enraged, and an electrifying and breathless journey begins through the rotting underworld of London. Based on Simon Stephen’s brilliant translation for the English National Theater (2016), this production transforms an iconic theater classic into a tale that will thrill and excite!

Performance Dates:  February 28, 29, March 1, 6, 7, 8

Times: Fridays and Saturdays - 7:30pm; Sundays - 3pm

Costs:
  • General Admission: $25
  • Non-SCC students, Seniors, Faculty and Staff: $17
