On Halloween, Shorewood high school’s girls varsity soccer team were spooked last Saturday afternoon in cool, sunny conditions at the 3A District 1 playoff quarter-final match of the league postseason soccer tournament.

In ballet, that move is called a Grand Jete
#2 Rilan Fly

Having dispatched #12 Mount Vernon two nights ago, they now faced #4 Snohomish, which had only lost to the Wesco North champions, Stanwood. Would they be cowed, or rise to the occasion?

In a tightly contested match, Panthers had the tricks, and ended with the winning treat by 2-0. On the eve of Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead), whose dreams live on, and whose hopes die?

At the midway point of the District 1 playoffs, #3 Shorecrest crushed #7 Meadowdale, 5-1; #4 Edmonds-Woodway and #1 Ferndale, ended regulation and overtime with a scoreless draw, leading to the ghoulish ordeal of PKs, where the Warriors edged the Eagles, 5-4; #2 Stanwood ousted #5 Monroe, 3-2.

So the semi-final matchups are Snohomish vs Shorecrest, and Stanwood vs Edmonds-Woodway, at Shoreline Stadium, on Tuesday 11/3, for the right to meet in the final, and qualify for State!

Anything can and probably will happen, as there was tension and drama in Snohomish today, where the steeliest players stepped up to subdue Shorewood.

However, the journey is not over for Ferndale, Shorewood, Monroe, and Meadowdale, as they enter a playoff to try win 3rd or 4th or 5th place, and still go to State!

Shorewood will face familiar Wesco South foes Meadowdale at home, on Tuesday 11/3 in the elimination bracket. Also scheduled that day, Ferndale will battle Monroe, with the same stakes of win or go home.
