Shorewood’s Isaak Abraham named HeraldNet 2024 Boys Soccer Player of the Year

Thursday, July 4, 2024

2023 photo when he was named
Athlete of the Week
Taras McCurdie
wrote a great article in HeraldNet about Isaak Abraham being named the HeraldNet 2024 Boys Soccer Player of the year.

Abraham and coach Shaun Warner helped lead Shorewood atop the Wesco 3A/2A standings while also earning back-to-back Class 3A District 1 trophies and being a Class 3A state contender.

Warner said,
“The way he went into the playoff games, it wasn’t like just all of a sudden we needed him because he’s so much better. Everyone played better (when he was on the pitch). Everyone played with more excitement. Everyone was pumped up,” Warner continued.
“I always say my definition of a great soccer player is someone that makes the people around them better. And without a doubt Isaak is that player.”

Scots invoke Cinderella in Magical Journey to State 3A Soccer Final

Monday, November 20, 2023

The "Cinderella" Shorecrest soccer team at the beginning of the season.

By all measures, Shorecrest had achieved much by coming second in WesCo 3A, and runner-up in District 1. They also qualified for State with an RPI of 11, and seeded #9 in the tournament.

In the State Tournament eighth-final, they faced Peninsula Seahawks of the SSC 3A who were seeded #8, and District 3/4 runner-up.

In a tight, close game of evenly-matched teams, Scots managed to score the singular goal to advance to the quarter-final, 1-0. There, they were to face the defending State Champions Bellevue Wolverines of KingCo 3A, seeded #1, and District 2 co-champions, who had also knocked out Shorecrest in last year’s semi-final.

Surely, the clock would strike midnight and the plucky underdogs would carry their bedraggled pumpkin back to the scullery. Except that Cinderella was not yet ready to leave the ball, and proceeded to use their glassy cleats to kick the Wolverines off the dance floor, 2-1.

Shorecrest had improbably reached the semi-finals again, to face perennial powerhouse Lakeside Lions of Metro 3A, seeded #4, and third in District 2.

They were one step away from the final, in their quest for the prized chalice, and state soccer supremacy.

The Scots were nearly mauled, but as if protected by a fairy godmother, they conjured up the frightful specter of penalty kicks (5-4), and summoned it to tame the Lions into submission, 2-1.

They were one win away from achieving what was previously done by their predecessors 30 years ago, in 1993. And this time, they only had to face the Roosevelt Roughriders of Metro 3A, seeded #14, who squeaked through District 2 bi-league playoffs.

Instead of being the dark horse, they were favored, surely now, the Team of Destiny in their Finals crusade at Sparks Stadium.

Little did they know that there was another longshot Cinderella on their own mission of redemption, Roosevelt, who had lost in last year’s final (to Bellevue). And this time, the Roughriders were not to be denied, taking a commanding 0-3 lead, but the Scots willed one last flicker of hope to cut the deficit to 1-3. Roosevelt did not flinch, did not waver, did not retreat, this Saturday night in Puyallup, to ruthlessly apply the final strike to vanquish valiant Shorecrest 1-4.

Last year, Scots had to be content with fourth place, this year they have finished second. What will happen next year?

We recognize and salute the departing Shorecrest senior players:

#1 Tatiana Zahajko, Goalkeeper
#3 Darcy Dalziel, Defense
#5 Olivia Sasnett, Forward
#6 Emma Orthel, Forward
#7 Kenna Stallings, Defense
#8 Tayvi Khann, Midfield

Stormrays Run Out of Magic On A Mountain, in State tourney loss November 10, 2023

Shorewood Soccer team 2023 Photo by T Aw

In soccer’s State Tournament eighth-final, seedings and rankings are meaningless, as on any given day, anything could happen.

Shorewood's Stormrays were flying high, seeded #2, the Wesco 3A champions, and District 1 champions.

Wildcats of the GSL 3A were seeded #15, and District 8 runner-up. Mt. Spokane started fast, swarming on defense and attacking with slick, accurate passing, slicing upfield through the gaps.

Within 5 minutes, Cats took a routine corner kick, executed perfectly with a header past the Shorewood keeper, 0-1. Shaken, the Srays pressed forward in response, but Mt. Spokane countered quickly, whacked a hopeful lob that swerved high and dipped through the fingertips of the Srays goalie, to take a 2-nil lead.

Within the first 10 minutes, they were in a position seldom encountered during the regular season.

Surely, their star duo would respond in the face of this challenge, except that the underdogs were tenacious, snapping at the ball, gang-tackling the Srays' strikers. Shorewood surged forward, but the Cats' keeper was their equal, keeping out point-blank shots.

Srays tried valiantly, but could only manage a goal that was waved off for offside, ending the half down, 0-2.

Shorewood had a mountain to climb, a formidable mountain named Spokane. After the half, Wildcats stuck to their game plan of tough defense and fearless swift attacks. The Stormrays pushed hard, desperately, knowing that their State run was in danger. They struck the bar, missed an open shot, and finally, center-forward #7, surrounded by a trio of defenders, managed to stab home a shot, 1-2.

Try as they might, Srays could not find the equalizer, as the minutes ticked away. They fought the mountain, but the mountain won. There would be no magical finish this Friday night, and we wish the Wildcats well, as their journey continues for the State Cup.

We recognize and salute our departing Shorewood senior players:
  • #0 Paige Petschl, Goalkeeper
  • #2 Alivia Berry, Center Back
  • #4 Marieka Staheli, Midfield
  • #10 Amelia Severn, Attacking Midfield
  • #11 Alia Lowden, Defensive Midfield
  • #14 Evan Bachler, Center Back
  • #23 Reese Johnson, Fullback
NEWSFLASH: Our frenemies, the Shorecrest Scots, upset the Peninsula Seahawks 1-0, and Bellevue Wolverines 2-1, to advance to the State semi-finals. (see article)

Shorewood High School’s girls varsity soccer team win 3A District 1 Championship, advance to State

Monday, November 6, 2023

Shorewood high school’s girls varsity soccer team put on a sterling performance last Saturday night in crisp, cool conditions at the 3A District 1 playoff final match of the league postseason soccer tournament. They wrapped up the WesCo 3A league title on October 24, 2023 with a record of 15-0-0, qualified as the #1 seed for the District playoffs, with the top RPI ranking in the league.

In the quarter-final, they faced #8 seed Snohomish at Shoreline Stadium, in a tighter than expected contest. The Panthers had adapted by playing a midfield six zone formation to great effect, with the score tied 1-1 at the half.

In the second half, the Stormrays responded with their aces #13 forward and #7 striker to break the midfield trap and seal the win, 3-1.

The semi-final was a tilt against the #4 seed Mountlake Terrace, again with the home-field advantage. The Hawks deployed tight man marking with a dedicated sweeper to stave off the Stormrays, but the strike force of #7 and #13 broke through with sharp-shooting to triumph, 3-0. (see previous article)

This earned them the right to face the #2 seed, arch-rivals Shorecrest (12-3-0) in the 3A District 1 Championship Final on Saturday, November 4th. This titanic clash was destined to happen, as Scots were the WesCo 3A runner-up that had relentlessly pursued them throughout the regular season title race.

Shoreline had been soaked by torrential rain all day, but shortly before kickoff, the clouds parted, leaving a typical clear but chilly Fall evening. The stage was set for another chapter in the saga of high-stakes local derbies between friends, neighbors, even families. There was a definite excitement mixed with tension in the air, an expectant electricity, anticipating a contest where anything could happen.

The Scots mustered a high press with aggressive marking, tenaciously pursuing and fighting for every ball. The Stormrays stuck to their tactics of quick passing, zig-zagging from sideline to sideline, mesmerizing and beguiling opposing defenders.

One such thrust resulted in an unfortunate handball infraction against Shorecrest in the box, mandating an automatic penalty-kick. Could Shorewood take advantage of this stroke of luck, with barely a quarter of the game elapsed?

Up stepped center-back #11, usually tasked to stop goals rather than scoring goals, with the pressure of expectation, that the goalkeeper would be unlikely to save the kick. With short strides, using accuracy rather than power, she coolly slots the ball into the right bottom corner of the net, 1-0.

The Scots, rather than being deflated, were spurred into an even more determined frenzy, hurling themselves forward with attacks down the wings and crosses into the box. Within minutes, a quick strike redirects a fast pass into the six-yard box, past the outstretched keeper for the equalizer, or was it?

In a second unfortunate turn, the Shorecrest goal was waved off due to offside. Undaunted, the Scots responded by clogging the midfield, and denying the Stormrays their intricate passing lanes. They continued to launch salvos of long balls to bypass the stout Shorewood defense, and ended the half with high energy, with the Stormrays seemingly on their heels and clinging to a slender lead.

The match resumes with Shorecrest’s tall central defenders holding the quad back line, with three mids and three forwards, an attacking posture to go for broke rather than adopt a defensive crouch. The match flowed back and forth with end-to-end action, but slowly, by the middle of the second half, the Scots’ press was beginning to falter, and Stormrays were beginning to wrest control.

Midfield maestro, #10, surrounded by four defenders, in a fit of hubris, feints to the right, into a sliver of space outside the eighteen-yard box, and while falling backwards, lashed a wicked shot to the left beyond the diving goalie, 2-0.

Shorewood then piled on the pressure, to stamp out the insolent upstarts that dared to despoil their magical tour de force. Within minutes, Stormrays force a corner, and from the set-piece, lethal center-forward, #7 soars high like a majestic bird of prey and thunders home a powerful header, 3-0. At that point, Shorecrest shoulders visibly slump, the match was effectively over, and Shorewood subs in the bench players to close out the game.

As the whistle blows for full time, pandemonium ensues, as they lay claim to the title of 3A District 1 Champions.

Shorewood gets their Senior redemption, where as Juniors, one year ago in 2022, in the same District Final, against the same opponent, they had lost a final heartbreaker. Can they top it with the trifecta of a 3A Soccer State Championship as well?

That chapter remains to be written, as they attempt to do what was last done by their predecessors 24 years ago, in 1999. The State Tournament begins November 7/8 and ends November 18.

EPILOGUE: Both Shorewood and Shorecrest (WesCo League) have qualified for the 3A State Tournament as the #2 and #9 seeds. Two other teams representing District 1 are Ferndale and Oak Harbor (Northwest Conference), the #11 and #13 seeds. (see previous article from beginning of season)

Shorewood’s JV team finished the season with a respectable record of 5-4-2, finishing 8th in the league table, slightly overshadowed by their undefeated 13-0-0 Shorecrest JV counterparts, topping the table (see previous article). The scene is set for yet another epic showdown in the future.

Shorewood High School’s girls varsity soccer team put on a sparkling performance last Thursday night in balmy conditions in the penultimate Wesco 3A league match of the season.

The first-place 13-0 Stormrays faced the third-place 10-2-1 Mountlake Terrace Hawks with places in the District 1 playoffs at stake. The Hawks came in with a reputation of Giant Killers, having defeated Archbishop Murphy, Cedarcrest, and Shorecrest, hoping to spoil the Stormrays’ dream season.

In a game punctuated by brief drizzles of threatening precipitation, the weather held off to allow the players to display their skills.

In the first twenty minutes, Stormrays would prod and probe, and Hawks would counterattack with intent.

The Terrace defense resolutely held off the dangerous Shorewood attacks, but Stormrays patiently switched the ball from left to right and left again while advancing forward. Star attacking midfielder, #10, carried the ball from the halfway line into the box, burst clear through a desperate tackle, and laced an unstoppable shot past the keeper for the breakthrough, 1-0.

Midway through the first half, the Stormrays seized the momentum and redoubled their offensive pressure. Star striker, #7, received the ball on the right flank, dribbled left, leaving defenders in her wake, and unleashed a rocket for a 2-0 lead.

The Hawks were reeling, the Stormrays engaged the press and swarmed the Terrace goal, the ball bobbling around the six-yard box until #10 loops the ball over the goalie’s flailing hands for her brace, making it 3-0 just before the half.

The match felt over in the second half, but Terrace was not giving up, launching waves of counter-attacks while fending off Shorewood’s half-hearted offense.

The Stormrays’ junior keeper, #1, had to come out of her first half slumber to pull off several superb agile saves to keep the shutout and snuff out any possible comeback. Midway through the second half, #10 drove to the eighteen-yard box, sensed an opening, curled a precision top left strike beyond the keeper’s reach for her hattrick, and the coup de grace, 4-0.

The Hawks launched one more last-gasp foray that hit the right post, and the clean sheet was safe, much to the satisfaction of the Shorewood goalie, #1.

The match ended and the Stormrays maintained their perfect record, heading into an almighty clash in the final match of the season against the second-place 12-1-0 crosstown rivals Shorecrest with the league title at stake.

NEWSFLASH: The Shorecrest Scots did not cooperate with the script and unexpectedly lost to the Arlington Eagles, 0-1, handing the title to Shorewood Stormrays, the 2023 Wesco 3A Champions!

The District 1 Championship is up next, with RPI and seedings (and qualification) for State still to be earned.

Shorecrest in action
Local high school soccer fans have been treating themselves to two teams playing at the highest level in the state.

About a third of the way into the season, Shorecrest and Shorewood’s girls soccer teams have picked up where they left off last season.

The Scots at 5-0, the Stormrays 5-1, the only blemish in their schedule being a season-opening loss to last year’s 3A State Champions, Bellevue.

In fact, it was Bellevue that first knocked out the Stormrays last year in the quarter-finals, then the Scots in the State semi-finals.

The Stormrays are coached by Brooke Pingery, her second year at the SW helm. Mindy Dalziel, the dean of WESCO soccer coaches, has been roaming the sidelines seemingly forever - this is her 24th year with SC.

Great players abound for both teams, too numerous to mention.

The regular season finale finds the two rivals squaring off against each other on Monday, October 23, 2023. Circle your calendars.

Local youth soccer coaches would be well advised to forego at least one weeknight practice and bring their teams (boys and girls) to Shoreline Stadium. Youngsters will get an up-close view of concepts their coaches are trying to instill….. spacing, passing, dribbling, and verbally communicating with each other.

It’s a certainty that the girls they’ll see playing did the same when they were playing for Shorelake or Hillwood.

Shorecrest soccer earns state berth with win over Mountlake Terrace

Sunday, May 14, 2023

Shorecrest boys soccer faced their most challenging games of the season in the District 1 playoffs, but prevailed to earn a place in the state tournament.

They beat Mountlake Terrace 3-1 on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Shoreline Stadium

According to an article in the Everett Herald,

The district tournament was a topsy-turvy journey for the Scots. Shorecrest was the No. 2 seed after losing just once during the regular season. However, the Scots faced a challenging path after being upset 2-1 on penalty kicks by Mountlake Terrace in their first district game, and a 4-0 loss to Edmonds-Woodway on Thursday meant Shorecrest had more defeats in three district games than it had in 16 regular season contests.

But in Saturday’s do-or-die contest, the Scots left little to chance as they grabbed control early. Shorecrest forced a series of corners in the early going, and it paid off twice. First, in the 10th minute, a corner from the right wasn’t cleared, and Haile poked the loose ball home from point blank to give the Scots the lead. Then just five minutes later it was a mirror image, as a corner from the left wasn’t cleared and Haile slammed it home again from close range to make it 2-0.

Shorewood boys soccer takes District 1 title

The Shorewood boys soccer team scored a couple of goals in the last minutes of the game to take down unbeaten Mount Vernon for the District 1 Championship.

The game was played Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Shoreline Stadium.

According to a story in the Everett Herald,

The formula for the Shorewood High School boys soccer team in the District 1 championship game was simple: win set pieces, put the ball into the mixer and try to take advantage of its height advantage.

It took 72 minutes, but eventually the formula bore fruit, and as a result the Stormrays can call themselves champions.

Upstart Huskies upend powerful Hoyas to reach NCAA Men’s Soccer Final with Shorewood grad on the team

Monday, December 13, 2021

By Tar C Aw

The #2 ranked Washington Huskies (18-1-2) were figuratively and literally in unfamiliar territory as they entered the semi-final of the NCAA Division I Men’s College Soccer playoff, held at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina.

The UW program had never advanced beyond the quarter-final stage in their history, but they clinched a spot in the College Cup Final Four by dispatching #10 seed St. Louis Billikens a week ago, 2-0.

Before them stood the mighty #3 Georgetown Hoyas (18-2-1), who had not only won an NCAA Championship two years ago, but also eliminated the Huskies in 2019. Their blue supporters greatly outnumbered the purple faithful, and were loud and noisy, creating a seething cauldron to endure in order to play for the coveted trophy.

The first half was a defensive tussle, with both offenses effectively neutralized by disciplined defenses stifling even the suggestion of a shot on goal. The Hoyas had the better amount of possession, with the Huskies content to absorb pressure and mount swift counter-attacks. But the defenses held the upper hand, snuffing out any attacks, ending the first 45 minutes deadlocked at nil-nil.

The #8 Clemson Tigers lie in wait of the winners, who had tied the #4 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 1-1 in the other semifinal, and had to grind out double OT and a PK shootout to stake a place in the final. It looked like this match was also destined to go the distance, with both teams evenly matched, both giving not an inch of ground.

It would take some outrageous luck or magical skill to break this stalemate, and so it proved in the second half. In the 54th minute, what looked like another futile cross into the box by junior midfielder Lucas Meek (Mercer Island HS) towards target man Gio Miglietti, took a slight deflection off the shin of GU defender Kenny Nielsen to bounce awkwardly into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

This was a goal Nielsen was not eager to claim, and gladly allowed Meek to be credited with the shot.

Sensing the shift in momentum, the Huskies turned up the offensive pressure, probing the defense, with several thrusts down the right flank. As the Hoyas settled into the box with 5 defenders repelling any through balls, junior fullback Charlie Ostrem (Shorewood HS) received a pass in the 57th minute just outside of the 18-yard box.

He touched it to his right, launched a sublime strike above the heads of the defensive line into the top right corner, beyond the reach of the goalkeeper for a 2-0 lead. Ostrem, a homegrown product from Richmond Beach, was better known for his assists and defensive prowess, made a world-class attacking shot worthy of a Messi or Ronaldo, was the man of the moment, and now, local hero.

In the span of four minutes, the Huskies had a stranglehold on the match, but there was still more than half an hour to go, and the Hoyas were not going to go quietly. They had no choice but to emerge from their defensive formation and venture forward with greater urgency.

Could U-Dub withstand the pressure, hold off Gee-U, and defend their advantage? As the clock wound down to the 80th minute, the Hoyas pressed forward yet again, launched a precise cross-field ball from the left side towards the far post, to be met smartly by the head of attacking midfielder Zach Riviere that stalwart goalie Sam Fowler (Issaquah HS) got a hand to, but could not keep out of the net, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

The last ten minutes were a spine-tingling frenzy of back-and-forth as Georgetown piled on the pressure. With 8 seconds left in regulation, they get a long-distance free-kick that arcs high into the box, and as Washington defenders desperately try to push it away, it falls to that man Riviere, unmarked at the penalty spot, but his first-time volley sails harmlessly over the bar.

Joy is unrestrained, especially for long-suffering family and friends in the stands, whose journey started out 14 years ago on the turf fields of the Shoreline recreational soccer league.

No matter what happens on Sunday, this team has already stamped their names in the history of athletic achievements in the UW pantheon.
