Shorewood Soccer dazzles with legerdemain in clash of the behemoths

Stormray mascot
By TCA

Spring had almost sprung, but temperatures hovered below 60 degrees on a typical cloudy Tuesday in Shoreline. As the WESCo 3A South season draws to a close, Shorewood’s Boys Varsity soccer team is on an inexorable procession to the WESCo South league title, boasting an undefeated season (12-0-1) thus far.

This evening would be a tilt against the top team in WESCo 4A, the Glacier Peak Grizzlies at Shoreline Stadium. Could they keep this unbeaten streak going, despite illness and injuries to key players?

The Stormrays started strongly, in an attacking 2-3-2-3 formation, whereas the Grizzlies responded in anticipation with a more defensive 3-2-3-2 formation to counter the attacking prowess of Shorewood. The key to this matchup would be which midfield five would prevail?

Rays came storming out of the gate, fleet of foot and fleet of mind, not giving the Grizz players much time or space, and seized possession with intent. But Glacier Peak was not your WESCo South doormat, and proved their mettle by staving off wave after wave of Shorewood attacks, and perhaps snatch a goal on the counterattack.

For most of the first half, Rays dominated, but could not break through, as their active front trio pinged about like demented dragonflies, with sudden changes of direction.

At the half-hour mark, following an intercepted ball in midfield and a quick pass to the top left corner of the box, the Grizz keeper covered the near post as striker #10 twisted past the desperate defender. Stalwart #10 reacted expeditiously by lashing a dart to the far post, into the bottom right corner to break the impasse, 1-0.

The Grizz players stuck to their strategy, to perhaps hold out till halftime down by just one goal. The Rays remained relentless, stifling any midfield threats and counter-attacking rapidly. As the forwards moved menacingly to the box yet again, a flailing tackle with two minutes left, just outside the 18-yard box, results in a direct free-kick.

Surprisingly, Coach Warner calls upon #4, a defender, to take the kick - misdirection, a feint, or trickery perhaps? As #4 steps up, he had no such intention as he blasts a rocket to the right side netting to double the lead. Would the Rays relax and sit on a two-goal lead?

After the intermission, the forwards sprang forward with even greater intensity. The midfield press duly obliged by wresting possession and threading through-balls between, around, over the hapless Grizz defensive line.

The Rays’ passing was quick and crisp, with precision and accuracy, their dexterity and ball control began to wear down the opposition. Midway through the second half, one such incursion reached two strikers, and #19 graciously deferred to #10 at the top left of the box.

He duly scored a brace as he realized the keeper again cheating over to cover the near post, replicating an almost identical shot beyond the goalie, into the bottom right corner, 3-0.

Tall left-winger #19 came alive in the second half, knowing he could beat the fullback with pace and skill. He dribbled forward with insouciant confidence, punctuated by controlled sleight of foot to bewilder the defense. With a commanding lead, he demurred from crosses and assists, and instead penetrated determined to score, and break his drought. As the clock ticked down in the final quarter, he thundered a long shot from outside the box, that was deflected but whizzed into the goal anyway, due credit to #19.

This denouement was just icing on the cake, a tidy 4-0 win, with a clean sheet for the backup Rays’ keeper to usher out. This was an assured, controlled display by a confident team, as they seek to erase the pain of being pipped to the state title last year.

In the next week, Shorewood should wrap up the WESCo South league title, with an eye on the District 1 championship, and beyond to the State Tournament, where you sense they have unfinished business.

FIFA World Cup soccer is coming to Seattle: What will that mean for Shoreline?

Monday, February 16, 2026

The World Cup matches in Seattle will be played at Lumin Field, which will be known as Seattle Stadium during that time.

Six matches are scheduled from June 15 - July 6, 2026.

Tickets are selling on the official site for $1600 - $2100 per seat.

750,000 world visitors are expected to attend one or more of the matches in the U.S. and Canada.

Nearby, in Vancouver, B.C. tickets at BC Place Stadium are going for $500-600. Will those world visitors to Seattle hop on the train to get to Canada?

Where are they going to sleep? Seattle doesn't have that many hotel rooms. Will people come to Shoreline on the light rail for Airbnb accommodations? If they are sleeping here, where will they eat?

What about traffic? Policing?

Come to the Echo Lake Neighborhood Association (ELNA) meeting Tuesday night, February 17, 2026, 7-9pm on Zoom to hear Jack Malek tell us what planning he is aware of for this influx of soccer fans.

Share any concerns you may have

If you are not on the ELNA email list, ask for the link to this meeting ELNABoard@gmail.com

Local business World Cup readiness in Shoreline

Saturday, February 14, 2026

By Kate Ledbetter

The 2026 FIFA World Cup™ is expected to generate an estimated $929 million in economic activity across King County, presenting an unprecedented opportunity for our region’s diverse communities to connect through a shared love of “the beautiful game.”

As Shoreline prepares to welcome visitors from around the globe, local partnerships are already mobilizing to ensure our business community is ready to maximize the moment.

The City of Shoreline, in partnership with the Shoreline Chamber of Commerce, The Data Guys™, and the Seattle Metro Chamber, is working collaboratively to gather tools, insights, and resources designed to support Shoreline businesses in their World Cup readiness efforts.

If you own a business or represent a local organization interested in preparation resources or are considering hosting a World Cup watch party, there are several ways to get involved:

2026 Business Readiness Survey

Local business owners are encouraged to complete the Shoreline Local Business Readiness Survey by March 31, 2026. This survey helps regional organizers better understand how businesses are preparing and what support may be most beneficial.

Participation is especially valuable for restaurants, retailers, hospitality operators, service providers, and corridor-based businesses looking to be proactive not reactive. The survey is also available in Amharic, Korean, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, and Vietnamese, making sure it’s accessible to Shoreline’s diverse business community.

Businesses who complete the survey will be connected to targeted resources and free technical assistance based on their readiness needs.

Survey responses are confidential and only shared in aggregated form locally to build custom dashboards, allowing partners to move beyond general readiness conversations into actionable preparation, tracking economic impact, and understanding the flow of World Cup-related spending within our community.

Interested in Hosting a Watch Party?

The Seattle Metro Chamber has developed comprehensive Playbooks outlining everything businesses and organizations need to know, from logistics and permitting to marketing and copyright limitations.

These resources are designed to make planning accessible, organized, and impactful.

Stay Connected to Local Celebrations

For updates on Shoreline-based community events, activations, and World Cup celebrations, visit: https://www.destinationshoreline.com/2026worldcup

As anticipation builds, Shoreline is excited to welcome an influx of visitors to our region, uniting residents, businesses, and fans alike in celebration of this global sporting event. The 2026 World Cup represents not only an economic opportunity, but a moment to showcase Shoreline’s hospitality, diversity, and community spirit on the world stage.

A blast from the past!

What is The City Tournament?

By TCA

The City Tournament is a competition organized by SYSA (Seattle Youth Soccer Association) for u11-u19 soccer recreational league players, since 1969 (over 50 years!).

There is a recreational league with Seattle/Shoreline clubs in the Fall, with various divisions (skill levels) that concludes before Thanksgiving.

Your local Shoreline recreational clubs are Hillwood and Shorelake

The tournament is an optional open competition that is truly city-wide spanning North Seattle, West Seattle, South Seattle, Seattle Metro and Shoreline, and participants could be from any division.

Why would any self-respecting team not want a chance to prove themselves, win a trophy and crown themselves the Kings/Queens of Seattle?

It is a modified double-elimination tournament, meaning one loss does not knock you out, with a lucky losers bracket to make it to the final, but lose twice, and you’re out.

Post-Thanksgiving and pre-Christmas means battling the elements, under the lights, in November/ December. The winners are usually determined by motivation, weather, enthusiasm, a bit of skill and a lot of luck.

At the final stages, it usually involves evenly matched teams, resulting in the unique soccer ordeal of KFTM (kicks from the mark) or penalty kicks, with a minimum of 5 kicks per team, but the tournament record was apparently decided after the twenty-first kick!

There is no more exciting, exhilarating, agonizing event to participate in for a kid, tween, teen (and parents thereof) that will create memories to last a lifetime. Trust me, I’ve been there.
