How to keep up with summer events

A sample of Kate Ledbetter's Destination Shoreline calendar

By Diane Hettrick

Tuesday August 4, 2026 is behaving like a Saturday this month with two major events:
  • Primary election - ballots due before 8pm
  • Night Out for Community block parties

July and August weekends are always packed with activities in the northwest. School is out but more than that is our uncertain weather for all the outdoor activities.

For example, the Echo Lake Picnic organizers were somewhat concerned when there was a big rain and lightning storm five days before the event. By the day of, the weather had turned toasty and the picnic ended up in 90 degree weather.

I always feel a little guilty at posting such a jumble of events, but fortunately I have Kate Ledbetter and her weekly list of things to do and her wonderful calendar.

You can access the calendar here and there is a permanent link on the homepage of the Shoreline Area News - along with a lot of other helpful links and a search box.

Kate has been nominated for a Shoreline Community Champion Award. The reception will be held on August 14, 2026 from 4:30 -  6pm at Shoreline City Hall, 17500 Midvale Avenue N

For those of you who think we are only on Facebook, the main edition is on the web, then reposted on Facebook and Twitter (X). Subscribers get a daily email with all the stories from the previous 24 hours.

Shoreline Food Drive recap - Together we did something incredible

Thursday, December 18, 2025

By Kate Ledbetter, www.DestinationShoreline.com, Shoreline Food Drive Organizer

Thanks to the amazing Shoreline / Lake Forest Park community, the Shoreline Food Drive made a huge impact for our neighbors. Across Shoreline and LFP, Food Drive drop-off locations at local businesses and community events, you donated an incredible 6,143 pounds of food to Hopelink!

On top of that, your generosity helped raise $2,215 in monetary donations through the Destination Shoreline fundraising page, directly supporting food access for families right here in Shoreline.

“We are so grateful for your support. While both the food and funds are incredibly impactful to the Shoreline community, we are also so appreciative of the initiative to inspire others to host drives, sign up to volunteer, or possibly connect with our services in a time of need!”
— Levi O’Tool, Hopelink, Development Officer, Corporate Relations

This drive was a powerful reminder that donations big and small truly matter. One can of soup, one bag of groceries, one shared post, when we come together, we can do really big things for our neighbors.

Huge thank you to our drop-off locations for supporting this effort:

Always Summer Ice Cream Cafe • Ballinger BECU • Ballinger Thriftway • CafĂ© Aroma • Dale Turner Family YMCA • Drumlin • Edward Jones (Suzan Shayler) • Greenhouse Market at Sky Nursery • Ion Town Center Apartments • Irons Brothers Construction • Lighting of the Shorelights Winter Light Display • Lumin Laundry • Magpie Thrift • Minuteman Press – North Seattle • Nixi City Play + Cafe • The Nock Point • Pet Evolution (also collecting pet food) • Ridgecrest Books • Ridgecrest Pub • Salvation: Artist Collective • Shoreline City Hall • Shoreline Cooperative Preschool • Shoreline Cooperative Preschool Harvest Carnival • Shoreline LFP Senior Activity Center • Shoreline Teen Center • ShoreSmiles Orthodontics • Sky Nursery • Spin Alley Bowling Center & Vault 177 • StretchLab Lake Forest Park • Third Place Commons • Uplift Climbing • Waxing The City Shoreline • Windermere Real Estate/Shoreline

Several local businesses have decided to extend their Food Drive through the end of the year. Look for continued drop off sites around town.

Thank you to every business, volunteer, donor, and neighbor who showed up and made this possible. Thank you, Shoreline and LFP!!

Shoreline community rallies for November Food Drive in support of Hopelink

Sunday, November 23, 2025

Story and photos by Kate Ledbetter

We’ve been blown away by the donation so far, but let’s keep the momentum going to support our neighbors!

The Shoreline community is coming together this November to support neighbors in need through the Shoreline Food Drive, benefiting Hopelink’s Shoreline location.

With food insecurity on the rise across the region, community participation is more important than ever.

Throughout the month, residents are encouraged to drop off non-perishable food and essential household items at donation sites across Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Mountlake Terrace, and North Seattle.

Every contribution helps expand the variety of foods available to Hopelink clients, ensuring families can access culturally diverse, nutritious, and household-staple items.

In addition to donating items, you can also:

150 backpacks donated for Shoreline students

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Shoreline community, more than 150 backpacks were donated to support the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation during this year’s Backpack Drive, hosted by BECU Ballinger and DestinationShoreline.com.

Throughout the month-long drive, community members dropped off backpacks that will help ensure local kids are prepared for a successful school year. These donations make a direct and meaningful impact for Shoreline families and highlight the strong spirit of giving that defines our city.

“We are so grateful to everyone who stopped by, donated, and joined us for the Backpack Drive Open House,” said Maia Lark, Branch Manager, Ballinger BECU, “These contributions help set students up for success and remind us how powerful community support can be.”

Special Thanks to Our Partners:
The Shoreline Public Schools Foundation continues to play a vital role in providing resources and support for students across the district. BECU Ballinger was proud to serve as a collection site and partner in this effort, reinforcing their commitment to supporting the neighborhoods they serve.
