Shoreline community donates over 150 backpacks to support Shoreline students

150 backpacks donated for Shoreline students

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our Shoreline community, more than 150 backpacks were donated to support the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation during this year’s Backpack Drive, hosted by BECU Ballinger and DestinationShoreline.com.

Throughout the month-long drive, community members dropped off backpacks that will help ensure local kids are prepared for a successful school year. These donations make a direct and meaningful impact for Shoreline families and highlight the strong spirit of giving that defines our city.

“We are so grateful to everyone who stopped by, donated, and joined us for the Backpack Drive Open House,” said Maia Lark, Branch Manager, Ballinger BECU, “These contributions help set students up for success and remind us how powerful community support can be.”

For over three decades, the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation (SPSF) has been a trusted partner in our local education community. What began in 1992 as a collaboration between parents, educators, and community leaders has grown into a vital nonprofit dedicated to funding learning opportunities that elevate the academic experience for all Shoreline and Lake Forest Park students.

Q&A With Cindy Pridemore, Executive Director, Shoreline Public Schools Foundation

Q: How long have you been supporting the community?

Since 1992. 32 years.

Q: What inspired you to start?

A group of parents, community leaders, and educators came together to ensure that students in the Shoreline School District would have access to enriching academic opportunities, particularly those that the school district itself might not be able to fund.

Q: What service does the SPSF provide for our community?

The Shoreline Public Schools Foundation funds opportunities that directly support students’ educational success, through classroom grants, program enhancements, and access to tools and experiences that help kids thrive.

Q: What do you love the most about Shoreline?

I love that our community believes in children and supports public education both through the consistent passing of school levies and by donating to the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation. The generosity here is incredible.

Q: Why are you based in Shoreline?

We are here to support students and learning in the Shoreline School District. It's our mission and our home.

Q: What inspires you each day?

How excited teachers and students are when they get to experience something new and impactful because of a grant from the Foundation. Seeing those moments of discovery and opportunity keeps us going.

Q: What has been your proudest moment in so far?

Honestly, every day I’m amazed by the generosity of the residents of Lake Forest Park and Shoreline—and how strongly they support our public schools and students. It’s a daily source of pride.

Q: How do you support or give back to the local community?

We help make sure that kids have what they need so they come to school ready to learn, grow, and succeed.

Q: What future plans or goals do you have?

Our goal this year is to raise an additional $125,000 to help the Shoreline School District reach its literacy target: 85% of 5th and 8th graders reading at grade level by spring 2029. We’re focused on supporting new curriculum that makes that goal possible.

Q: What’s your next upcoming event?

Our Fall Campaign runs from September 1 through November 1. Donations during this period will directly support grants to teachers, schools, and student-centered activities.

Shoreline Public Schools Foundation establishes SAFE fund to help keep kids in school

The Shoreline Public Schools Foundation and the generous donors who contribute to help enrich our schools contributed over $100K over the last school year, which funded 46 Engagement Grants.

For the 2024-25 school year, the Foundation is launching SAFE (Student Aid for Essentials).

SAFE is a new initiative with a simple and far-reaching goal: to keep kids in school by removing barriers for students who are living with a low income or experiencing a financial and/or family crisis.

The SAFE program will act as a lifeline, providing immediate help for basic needs and emergency support.

Below are a few examples of what the support will fund:

• Gift cards for groceries, gas, and necessities
• School supplies
• Backpacks
• Field trip fees
• Class and activity fees
• Transportation to services outside of school

Shoreline PTA Council and Shoreline Public Schools Foundation are collecting backpacks and financial donations to support students this year.

Donations of large backpacks for middle and high schoolers are low this year. And we need several more volunteers on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 to help sort supplies and deliver them to the schools.

Shoreline Public Schools Foundation donates $100K to Shoreline Schools for classroom enrichment projects

The Shoreline Public Schools Foundation and the generous donors who contribute to help enrich our schools funded over $100K in 46 Engagement Grants submitted by teachers during the last school year.

At Einstein Middle School, grant funds were used for a visual arts project that involved more than 300 students who collaborated on a theme, drafted ideas and then each painted a tile. When combined, a mural was created and permanently installed.

Shoreline Public Schools Foundation funds two critical programs within the district

Shoreline Public Schools Foundation (SPSF) is proud to announce the funding of two critical programs within the district: Roots of Empathy and Power of One. 

Without the generosity of our donors, these two programs would not be accessible to our students this year.

 

Roots of Empathy is a program that was launched in Seattle, Washington in 2007. 

Roots of Empathy seeks to reduce levels of aggression within students and nurture their emotional and empathic development by exposing students to neighborhood infants and their families.

Families commit to visiting classrooms throughout the school year so students can observe the baby’s development and use experiential learning to reflect on their own feelings and the feelings of others.

According to research, this program reinforces inclusivity, appreciation for differing viewpoints, and supports school curriculum. 

SPSF funds totaling $3,750 will provide this program to 12 classrooms across five different schools within the district.

Power of One volunteer

Power of One is a program in which community seniors work with students and educators to provide extra academic support. 

Fifty seniors complete a total of over 1,500 hours of one-on-one tutoring, leading small groups, helping with classroom lessons and projects, providing support in libraries and assisting with after-school programs. 

Founded in 1996, Power of One is a way to connect seniors to our school community and utilize their unique talents, all while offering critical support to students and educators in our district. 

SPSF support totaling $4,000 will provide students and community seniors access to this valuable opportunity.

 

With the Shoreline Public School District’s budget crisis still looming large, it is crucial that community members continue to support the work of the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation.

Lake Forest Park Elementary School Principal Aimee Miner named Shoreline Schools Administrator of the Year

The Shoreline School District has named award winners for 2023 Staff of the Year. 

Principal Miner and the ten other winners will be honored at a reception on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at Kellogg Middle School Commons 16045 25th Ave. NE from 5:30-7:00pm. The public is invited.

Contribution from the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation allows the district to continue this beloved Shoreline School District celebration.

All award winners will receive a $50 grant for the Shoreline school of their choice, courtesy of the Foundation.

In the Shoreline School District, we believe that celebrations, demonstrations of gratitude, and opportunities to come together as a community are important elements of maintaining a positive and welcoming culture for staff, students, families, and the communities of Shoreline and Lake Forest Park.

Help the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation (SPSF) support summer school and summer learning

For the past 30 years the generous donors of Shoreline Public Schools Foundation (SPSF) have diligently supported summer school and summer learning opportunities within the district. 

This summer the SPSF granted $75,000 to the summer school program, bringing the total amount donated by SPSF to nearly $900,000 since the Foundation’s inception in 1992. 

It is because of our donors' steadfast dedication to providing opportunities for educational excellence for all students, that the SPSF is able to continue to help fund this critically important program.

We recently asked Heidi Alexander, the principal of the K-5 summer school program, what the Foundation’s support means to the students in our district; she had this to say, 

“I categorically know that none of this would have been possible without the generous donation from the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation. 

"Many of the students that participate in our program come to summer school looking for a place to be seen, valued, and connect during a time that can often feel ambiguous. 

"We are grateful that the SPSF recognizes and fosters creating systems of support to improve student outcomes for all learners even during the summer.”

Additionally Ellen Kaje, Director of Categorical Programs and Academic Support, stated, 

“This year, due to the generosity of the Foundation, we were able to send home just-right books (to keep!) to 100 struggling summer school readers. In addition to the books, teachers write letters encouraging students to read that accompany each book mailing. 

"Each year kids and families tell us how much they appreciate these books. Due to the generosity of the Foundation, we see kids maintain their reading level and even make significant gains during the course of the summer school program.”

In addition to scholarships SPSF has funded for the past 30 years, monies have also been used for staff, crossing guards, transportation, food, summer reading and dual language programs— all integral components to the summer school sessions.

The Shoreline Public Schools Foundation is honored to once again serve the community and in so to provide opportunities for educational excellence for every student within the district.

Shoreline Public Schools Foundation awards March grants

It has been another busy and fulfilling month for the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation (SPSF). In addition to our annual spring fundraising campaign, which concluded on March 31, 2022 the board approved three more grants in the month of March.

A grant submitted by the LAP teacher at Echo Lake Elementary has afforded seventy-five students in both the kindergartener and the Special Education program at Echo Lake Elementary to benefit from the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Curriculum. 

This curriculum is an invaluable tool in helping struggling and early readers establish stronger phonemic awareness. A foundational understanding of phonemic awareness directly impacts reading, writing, spelling and speech.

Thanks to a grant submitted by the Family Advocate at Highland Terrace Elementary, Spanish speaking Hispanic and Latino families will meet several times from now until the end of the school year, to discuss how to best support their student’s education, to share experiences and to build a stronger community. 

These meetings will be sponsored in-part by the SPSF. These gatherings provide a means of inclusion for diverse families and a way to participate in the decision-making process at Highland Terrace.

Over 700 students at Shorecrest and Shorewood High School as well as Kellogg and Einstein Middle School, will have access to a more diverse and inclusive set of award-winning books for book clubs, thanks to a recent grant submitted from the librarian at Shorewood High School. 

Book clubs within our schools have an enormous impact on the culture of reading and promote a community of readers with books that represent and reflect our diverse student population.

A huge thank you to the teachers who wrote and submitted these grants and to the generous donors of the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation.

Shoreline Public Schools Foundation is named as a recipient of Gesa Credit Union’s Local Heroes Grant Award

The Foundation will fund Shorewood’s 2022 Write and Ready College Workshop with this award.

As one of 23 recipients in Washington state, the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation received $5000 in funding.

“Gesa recognizes and appreciates our local heroes who serve our communities across Washington state,” said Richard Waddle, Executive Vice President of Gesa Credit Union. “We’re thrilled to honor the invaluable work that the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation has done, and we thank them for their selfless efforts in serving our community.”

 

Gesa Credit Union’s Local Heroes Grant Program provides grants to organizations that support local heroes including firefighters, law enforcement, teachers and veterans in the state of Washington.
