Photo: Snowfall Monday

Tuesday, February 27, 2024

Photo by Ken Berkun near Grace Cole Park in LFP

First it was graupel - tiny ice balls. Then it went to clouds of light snow tumbling in the winds. Then it looked like real snow. Finally it turned to rain.

None of the white stuff on the ground lasted very long. It was on the leaves longer than on the ground.

I went out in it - the temperature was 39 degrees in Shoreline - although Carl Dinse assured me that a storm cell could drop the temperature before freezing in a minute.

The last time I thought a mid-afternoon snowfall wouldn't amount to anything turned out to be a huge storm, but this one behaved itself.

Snow in Shoreline Thursday

Friday, February 16, 2024

Created by students at Shoreline Community College

As predicted by our WeatherWatcher Carl Dinse, our area got some snow on Thursday morning. How much depended on where you live.

West Shoreline seems to have gotten the most - at least enough to make the ...interesting... snow creature shown above courtesy Shoreline Community College students.

Photo by Ken Berkun in Lake Forest Park

Central Shoreline and Lake Forest Park got enough to sprinkle lawns and turn decks white. Surprisingly, it didn't melt off until noon.

We may have other chances this season. There's always April.

Snow, sleet, rain, and nothing

Snowfall at Horizon View Park
I'm impressed that someone actually had snow on the ground. Here in the lowlands we had a couple of minutes of lovely snowfall, then sleet, then rain, then the usual drizzle.

None of the snow reached the ground. It either melted on contact or evaporated in the air. My kind of snow.

But Gordon Snyder captured the snowfall in Horizon View Park, which is one of the highest points around. I forgot to check with North City and Ridgecrest.

Tomorrow the roads may be treacherous. Schools are on a two hour late start and there are reports of roads being treated.

WeatherWatcher: Snow in the forecast but no advisories in effect for Shoreline or Lake Forest Park

Monday, February 13, 2023

Slight chance of a trace of snow
Areas of snow showers are possible tonight, but Shoreline and Lake Forest Park remain outside of the winter weather advisories currently in effect.

No accumulations are expected, but there is a slight chance of a trace to an inch overnight. Any accumulations that do occur will quickly melt off in the daylight.

Puget Sound Convergence zone is active but south of Seattle and in the Everett area and north.

Models suggest little to no precipitation in the areas around North King and South Snohomish County lowlands.

Currently the National Weather Service (NWS) has no watches, warnings or advisories in effect for Shoreline or Lake Forest Park.

Robin in snow photo by David Walton

The North wind doth blow,
And we shall have snow,
And what will poor robin do then, poor thing?

He'll sit in a barn,
And keep himself warm,
And hide his head under his wing, poor thing.

These flowers don't care about snow

Saturday, February 26, 2022

I have enduring childhood memories of my mother exclaiming "Oh no! It's going to freeze" and running outside to bring in dozens of container plants to spend the night in the enclosed patio.

So I'm always surprised to see my jonquils sitting happily in a bed of snow. These in the photo aren't mine but I have a clump of six inch tall leaves surrounded by snow, just as jaunty as can be.

Snow again on Wednesday

Cold and light snow photo by Diane Hettrick

As predicted (see WeatherWatcher) snow fell again on Wednesday evening. It was slightly more than on Monday. It didn't stick to the roads but seems to be on everything else, including all those early blooming plants (who don't mind at all).

WSDOT: Mountain passes closed

Friday, January 7, 2022

A mountain road completely covered with snow; an overpass crossing the road is also white with snow.
Conditions in the passes. Photo courtesy WSDOT

As of Thursday evening, January 6, 2022, Snoqualmie, Stevens, White, and Blewett passes remain closed.

Because of the conditions and amount of work needed to safely re-open, our passes will likely remain closed until Sunday.

Conditions are too dangerous for crews to be in the pass areas. Snow and debris continue to slide onto the highways. Crews are working in areas where it is safe to plow, clear catch basins and do other work to have those areas ready when we can reopen

More snow and possibly rain is in the forecast for the passes overnight. This will only increase the avalanche danger. If it is safe to do so, we will spend all day Friday addressing avalanche issues to create a safe work zone.

Once avalanche work is done, we will spend Saturday clearing the areas, including plowing and treating roads, removing snow/ice from signs, clearing trees and debris from the road and clearing catch basins for drainage.

In lowlands, heavy rain in several areas of the state will increase flood and washout danger. Several rivers are under advisories with risks to increase as snow melt continues. There is high danger of downed trees due to saturated soil, heavy snow and rain.

In Eastern WA, rain/flooding is a concern as is snow and strong winds, including in the Palouse. Blowing and drifting snow produce low visibility and challenging conditions leading to road closures and possibly power outages

We recognize the importance of these corridors but nothing is more important than the safety of our crews and the public. We are prepared to move in once it is safe, and we appreciate your patience during this challenging situation.

Shoreline weather and streets

Shoreline crews reviewed routes and procedures in October to be ready

With the exception of some possible flurries, snow is not expected in measurable amounts through the weekend. Temperatures will be briefly above freezing today, but will dip back down later this afternoon and will remain below freezing until Saturday. Temperatures are forecast to warm up over the weekend with the possibility of rain on Sunday.

Current road conditions: Shoreline City crews have been working hard and all primary routes have been plowed. Plow crews are currently touching up those routes and working on secondary streets.

They will move to neighborhood streets soon if possible. View maps of primary and secondary plow routes at shorelinewa.gov/stormready

Please be cautious while driving as ice is a possibility when snow melts and refreezes overnight. We are so thankful to our hard-working staff who have been putting in twelve-hour shifts to make our roads safe.

As snow begins to melt this weekend, please check the storm drains near you if you are able and clear any snow or debris from them to prevent localized ponding/flooding.

WeatherWatcher: Winter Weather Advisory in effect for Thursday

Wednesday, December 29, 2021

January 18, 2012 snow in Shoreline

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a winter weather advisory in effect Thursday until 7pm. Snow is expected through Thursday tapering off in the afternoon hours. Total new accumulations expected between 2 - 5 inches.

The forecast has little signs of any warmup for the north end, which includes Shoreline and Lake Forest Park. Snow is expected all day Thursday ending in the evening hours. Friday, we get a break with sunny skies and more cold temperatures. We are looking at lows in the lower to mid 20's and highs right around freezing, depending on your elevation.

A chance of snow brings in the New Year shortly after midnight with gradual warming during New Year's Day. There is a chance of snow in the morning with the possibility of a chance of rain or snow in the afternoon. Snow levels rise to around 200 feet, so most of the area will still be above the snow level.

Saturday evening through Tuesday we warm up, just a little. High temperatures may make it into the 40's with a chance of rain. Sunday night looks to be our next steady rain event. Longer range shows that by Wednesday next week we could be cooling down again with the threat of at least seeing some snow mix in with rain.

Forecasts continue to have high uncertainty about the warmup in the weekend, and what to expect next week. We'll do our best to keep you up to date with the latest when things become more certain.

Monday December 27, 2021 was officially the coldest day since December 29, 1990. The high temperature on Monday December 27th was 23°F at Sea-Tac. The high on December 29, 1990, only reached 22°F at Sea-Tac. The low this past Monday morning was 17°F at Sea-Tac.

In Shoreline, Monday's high temperature reached 21.6°F, with a low of 14°F. We've recorded a total snow accumulation of 10 inches, but never had 10 inches total on the ground, as some has compressed and evaporated inbetween the smaller snow dumps. There was a total 6 inches on the ground Saturday morning, another 3 inches new snow reported Sunday, and 1 inch new reported Monday at the Richmond Beach station.
