Rob Oxford: The Bluest Wig You’ve Ever Seen Is In Seattle

Mama Blue in action at a Seahawks game

Story by Rob Oxford
Photos by Rob Oxford unless otherwise noted

If you’re a Seahawk Fan, you’re most likely familiar with her story. After this weekend, fans in the other 31 NFL Cities should be familiar with it as well.

Patti Hammond, better known as Mama Blue, is truly a living legend in the Pacific Northwest. Elected in 1999 to represent the Seahawks in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, she is a true “Super Fan.” Which is why you’re reading a story about her on the morning of Super Bowl LV.

Unbeknownst to Patti, she was nominated for the NFL’s inaugural ‘Fan of the Year’ program. Honoring those fans who best represent their team and community. one of just three fans nominated, Patti was awarded an all-expenses paid trip to Tampa with all the trimmings and I mean ALL the trimmings. Including tickets to the biggest of games.

Sadly, with the pandemic still a major concern and her recent battle with cancer, which I am delighted to say she is successfully winning, Mama’s Doctors recommended she not do any traveling. Instead, she will be well represented this weekend by her great grandson Deon and her granddaughter Desirae, who will be wearing Mama’s signature blue wig.

Seahawks football legend Jim Zorn presenting Mama Blue with her
Seahawks Fan of the Year shirt, being held by her granddaughter Desirae.

Of course, Mama would love to have gone to the game, but as far as past Super Bowl experiences are concerned, nothing could possibly compare to watching her Hawks destroy the Denver Broncos at snowy Giant Stadium in Super Bowl XLVIII.

Now if today, Seattle was again representing the NFC, instead of the Patriots, her family might have had a tougher time keeping her home.

Although the award was ultimately presented late Saturday Night to a fan from Tennessee, a state that didn’t even have a Pro NFL team until 1998, 20 years after Mama had already begun her cheering, her daughter told me she was thrilled to be honored and delighted her grandchildren could be a part of the celebration. I then reminded her daughter that the fan from Tennessee doesn’t have his own trading card and Oyo Sports figure… so there. As you can tell I’m just slightly bitter.

Mama Blue's 90th birthday was celebrated with a parade of cars past her home.
There were Seahawks, pirates, and Seahawk legend Jim Zorn

A Seahawks Season ticketholder since the very first day, a birthday present for her late husband “Tricky,” Mama has been passionate about sports her entire life. She learned to encourage fans to root for their favorite team as a Roosevelt High School Cheerleader and, before buying a white wig at Goodwill and dying it blue, wore a purple wig at Husky Stadium. She is a Super Fan indeed.

Mama has lived only blocks from Shorecrest H.S. since 1952. Her children and grandchildren were all Scots and she delights in being asked to come to the school in all her regalia for special occasions. A true ambassador for the Seahawks, she has also spent countless hours in Veterans Facilities and Nursing Homes where at 90 years old she jokes; “I’m just visiting, I’m not staying.”

I remember the first time I met my future wife and she told me, “Mama Blue lives right down the street.” I knew right then this had to be a cool neighborhood.

On Mama’s 90th birthday, her daughter Dee, with help from Seahawks V.P. of Community Outreach Mike Flood, arranged a parade of vehicles to roll down the street in front of her home. Dozens of vehicles filled with 12’s, the Seafair Pirates, Seahawk Legend Jim Zorn, it was a total surprise and Mama Blue was overwhelmed.

So how did Patti Hammond aka Mama Blue become such a beloved member of the Seahawk family?

She weathered the storm. She never missed a game. When opponents would march into the Kingdome and blow out the Seahawks by 50, Mama Blue could be heard cheering. In 1992 when under Coach Tom Flores Seattle ended the season with a record of 2 – 14, their worst to date, Mama Blue and her husband spent every home game in their seats cheering.

Players don’t forget that type of thing. Especially when win or lose, the fan who stays behind to thank the team is wearing giant sunglasses and a crazy wig.

Interviewed dozens and dozens of times, by talent far more experienced than I, I wanted to ask Mama Blue questions she hadn’t been previously asked. That proved to be a difficult task.

As a sports fan myself and collector of memorabilia, I knew Mama had accumulated quite the collection over the years and I was curious as to her favorite item. Regrettably, it was a question I knew she’d been asked time and time again, and one I thought would be difficult to answer.

Not for Mama Blue.

She mentioned lots of autographed photos and footballs. In fact, one very special football was given to her on her 80th Birthday. She was in her seat congratulating the team after another win and Coach Pete walked up and presented her with a signed game ball.

Mama Blue has every media guide from every home game, game-used gloves and game-worn jerseys, but a pair of signed cleats from Walter Jones and a helmet signed by the late Paul Allen and Coach Mike Holmgren are among her most favorite keepsakes.

Webster defines “original” as: being the first instance or source from which to copy, reproduce…”

Look around Lumen Field next Seahawk season and as you revel in the number of 12’s wearing face paint and outrageous, self-made costumes, remember that most of them are mere copies of a true original.

It all started with a blue wig, blue and green eyeshadow, and a feather boa.

King County Elections, CenturyLink Field, and Seattle Seahawks open Vote Center this Saturday at CenturyLink Field Event Center

Wednesday, October 28, 2020

The CenturyLink Field Event Center is a Vote Center

King County Elections, CenturyLink Field, and the Seattle Seahawks are proud to once again partner to host a Vote Center in the CenturyLink Field Event Center (map).

The Event Center was also utilized in this year’s August Primary and will provide voters who still need to register, get a replacement ballot, or receive other assistance in-person to do so in the days leading up to Election Day.

The CenturyLink Field Vote Center will be open on
  • Saturday, October 31,
  • Monday, November 2, and
  • Tuesday, November 3 for the upcoming Presidential election.

King County Elections will offer drive-up service for those arriving in their vehicles, as well provide service and assistance to those arriving via transit or by foot.

Voters are encouraged to wear a mask while inside the Event Center and will be provided with one should they need. King County Elections staff will be masked, wearing gloves, and equipped with face shields to deter the spread of COVID-19.

“All voters deserve to have their voices heard, no matter where they stand on the issues. It is critical to cast your ballot and stand up for what you believe in. We are proud to be a partner to King County Elections to make sure that can happen for voters and fans in our region,” said David Young, Seahawks Senior Vice President of Business Operations and General Manager of CenturyLink Field.

King county election counting

The partnership between organizations started in 2019, as CenturyLink Field reached the voting age of 18. In 2019, CenturyLink Field and the Seahawks hosted King County Elections staff and drop boxes at select home games to reach fans and engage them in local elections.

In 2020, the partnership has strengthened further with the Seahawks and CenturyLink Field playing an invaluable role in amplifying accurate, reliable information to voters across the region and the opportunity to host a Vote Center at the Event Center.

“We cannot express our gratitude enough to CenturyLink Field and the Seattle Seahawks for how they’ve stepped up for our voters. Even before sports leagues and other teams across the country began lending their voices to the importance of voting, they have worked alongside us to ensure that every voice in King County and in Washington State can be heard and every vote counted,” said King County Director of Elections Julie Wise.

King County Elections will also host Vote Center locations
  • Dempsey Indoor Center on the University of Washington – Seattle campus,
  • Kenmore City Hall
  • Federal Way Performing Arts and Event Center,
  • Accesso Showare Center in Kent,
  • Bellevue College Gym,
  • Elections Headquarters in Renton.

Voters who need to come in-person are encouraged to visit one of these locations on Saturday as long lines are expected on Monday and Election Day.

Shoreline - Lake Forest Park Senior Center launches Capital Campaign

Saturday, October 19, 2019

October 18, 2019

Dear Family, Friends and Neighbors,

During the past few weeks, Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center has been a topic of discussion in the media, as we address concerns over not being selected as a recipient of the King County VSHSL levy, which would have provided funding over the next four years. We continue to communicate with our county representatives, and hope some assistance will be forthcoming.

However, as Shoreline has a notable population of adults age 65 and over, it is important for our center to continue providing the programs and services that so many rely on. From January 1, 2019 – July 31, 2019, Shoreline-LFP Senior Center had 39,230 duplicated attendees in the programs offered.

We averaged 65-78 programs/week, all through the efforts of 3 full time and two part-time employees, a dozen instructors and forty of the best volunteers in the state. Another example of the great work accomplished at the center is that in 2018, we served 11,000 meals in the Community Dining Program offered at the center; delivered another 11,400+ Meals On Wheels to Shoreline and Lake Forest Park residents, and anticipate equal or greater numbers this year in the Nutrition Program.

On September 28th, we launched a Capital Campaign to raise $60,000 by December 31, 2019. This would offset our current $90,000 deficit sustained (due to lack of VSHSL funding). It is with great pride that I share with you, that to date the seniors have donated $10,000. Each day, I witness seniors walking past our donation box, some dropping a sealed envelope in it, some a few bills and others a hand full of change. It is heartwarming and very encouraging to see the participants band together to support their center. We have also seen our corporate friends Northgate Retirement Community, We Speak Medicare, Emerald City Senior Living and Laurel Cove extend support to our cause.

Our efforts to solve this deficit can’t take effect though, unless we have the support of everyone in our community. That’s where you come in! I am asking you to help us by donating to our campaign, either through a cash donation or by attending one of the several events that we have planned over the next two months. We want this to be a FUNd Raising Campaign, one in which you can enjoy some of the great programming offered at the center, meet new friends, share a few laughs all the while, supporting our cause.

So here is what we have planned:

How to make a cash donation?
  • Drop by the center to pick up a donation envelope or call 206-365-1536 to have one mailed to you; we also have pledge forms
  • Call 206-365-1536 to make a credit/debit card donation
  • Donate online at our website www.shorelinelfpseniorcenter.org (Mobil Cause)

If you would like to sit down and discuss your donation, I’d be happy to meet with you. You can contact me directly at theresal@soundgenerations.org or 206-365-1536. I hope to hear from you soon and thank you in advance for your generosity.

Warmest regards,

Theresa LaCroix
Director
Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Senior Center

Shorecrest teacher honored at CenturyLink Field as Hero in the Classroom

Thursday, May 3, 2018

Shorecrest High School principal Lisa Gonzalez; Shorecrest High School teacher and 2017 Symetra Heroes in the Classroom honoree Lane Loland; and Marla Miller, assistant superintendent, Shoreline Public Schools. Photo taken in the Coach’s Loft at CenturyLink Field during the celebration honoring all 16 teachers (including Mr. Loland) who were recognized as 2017 Symetra Heroes in the Classroom.

Symetra and the Seattle Seahawks celebrated the 16 Puget Sound-area teachers recognized as Symetra Heroes in the Classroom®during the 2017 NFL season at an April 27 luncheon at CenturyLink Field.
Among the honorees was Shoreline Public Schools teacher Lane Loland, an athletic coordinator and social studies instructor at Shorecrest High School. Shoreline Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Marla Miller and Shorecrest principal Lisa Gonzalez joined Mr. Loland at the celebration.

running back C.J. Prosise (#22)
The event was held in the Coach’s Loft and also included a behind-the-scenes tour of the stadium, including a stop in the Seahawks locker room, where each teacher discovered a personalized locker.

Inside were a copy of the April 27 Seattle Times ad honoring them, a commemorative 2017 Symetra Heroes in the Classroom brochure and Seahawks items.

Seattle Seahawks running back C.J. Prosise (#22) made a surprise appearance— sharing stories about the impact teachers have had on his life, signing autographs, and posing for photos.

The Symetra Heroes in the Classroom program recognizes teachers in front of their students and peers at in-school presentations, and they receive a $2,000 donation for classroom books and supplies.

Lane Loland received his award during a surprise presentation at Shorecrest in December 2017. He was nominated by Shorecrest principal Lisa Gonzalez, who wrote in her nomination:

“Simply put, Lane Loland is a Shorecrest legend — he is our ‘Mr. Holland.’ A 30-year veteran of teaching, he has taught every range of course and student. He has also coached and served as our athletic director. Mr. Loland expects the best from his students and sets high standards. Whether in the classroom or on the athletic field, he helps every student be their best, and he does so with tremendous care, poise and dignity.
“Before becoming a teacher, Mr. Loland was an attorney. He made a conscious choice to switch careers and teach, serving our young people and bettering the community in the process. Students want to do well by him and the staff trust and respect him completely. It is very difficult to summarize all that Lane Loland has contributed to Shorecrest, from AP scores to ensuring that our sports programs are valued, supported and centered on the right things. He is truly our ethical center— and he is retiring at the end of this academic year. Please help us honor him and all that he has done for the Shorecrest community.”

Heroes honorees also receive tickets to a Seahawks home game and are acknowledged during an on-field presentation at CenturyLink Field. Mr. Loland attended the Seahawks’ Dec. 3, 2017 match-up with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Seahawks send retired Shoreline teacher to Pro Bowl in Orlando

Sunday, April 23, 2017

Geralyn Shreve, her son Gary and daughter-in-law LaVeta
at the Pro Bowl in Orlando, Florida

By Mary Jo Heller

Geralyn Shreve, longtime Seahawks fan, has had season tickets since 1975.

A retired Shoreline Schools teacher, she was surprised at halftime of the Seahawks’ matchup against Los Angeles this year.

This year the Seahawks began inviting a ticket holder who has supported the team since Day 1 to come onto the field during half time.

Geralyn and her son Gary at the Pro Bowl

Geralyn had entered a drawing for the promotion, which sent all Seahawks ticket holders an email and required them to vote for Pro Bowl players and complete a short form to be eligible.

Geralyn received a call that she would be called down to the field during the Los Angeles game. The announcer on the mic asked her who she thought should be going to the Pro-Bowl.

Geralyn said, “ I think Doug Baldwin because I think he is underrated.”

The announcer then surprised her by saying, “ That’s a good choice. And you’re a good choice to go too.”

Geralyn was startled to find that she had won tickets to the Pro Bowl in Orlando. She was allowed to bring her son, Gary, and his wife, LaVeta. The Seahawks paid for the flight, the room, the game, and a televised conference with the players.

Incidentally, that was the first time that Doug Baldwin went to the ProBowl.

She even received a “fan” shirt to walk through the airport with the Seahawks mascot, Blitz.

Photo: They're still our team

Monday, December 12, 2016

Apparently we are not to have two championship teams in the same year. The Sounders FC pulled off a stunning season, winning the MLS cup in Toronto.

The Seahawks did not fare so well Sunday. But they're still the home team and we can decorate our trees and houses in blue, green and 12s as much as we like!

I drove by a house on 10th or 11th or 12th, just south of 185th that was solid Seahawk decor. When I figure out the address, we'll get a photo of it.
