Hellbent Brewing's 8th Anniversary Party - June 10, 2023

Tuesday, May 16, 2023

Hellbent Brewing 8th Anniversary Party
Saturday, June 10th @ Noon-Midnight

13035 Lake City Way NE
Seattle WA

What’s it all about
Pay tribute to some of your favorite bands while drinking some of the best beer north Seattle has to offer at Hellbent’s 8th Anniversary: The Tribute Party, Saturday, June 10th.

You know how we like to do it over at Hellbent, we “Can’t Stop” making mouth-watering, hop-forward brews and we’re going all out for our 8th Anniversary IPA - our personal homage to the west coast style IPA.

We invite you to “Come as You Are” and rock out to 3 bands paying tribute to Bruce Springsteen (1-3pm), Nirvana (3:30-5:30pm), and the Red Hot Chili Peppers (6-9pm).

We’ll be closing off the parking lot for an extended beer garden featuring a satellite bar, and three food trucks: Tacos and Beer, Oskars Pizza, and Impeckable Chicken. Great music? Great Food? Great beer? We’ll be “Dancing in the Dark” before you know it. No cover. 21+.

Bands/Schedule

1-3pm - Hungry Heart: Springsteen Tribute

"Of all the music that has influenced local Americana singer/songwriter, Tyler Hamilton, the classic sounds of Bruce Springsteen have taken root the deepest. He is excited to finally put together his own E-street Band to play some of his favorite songs in tribute to the Boss! Catch Tyler up on stage delivering his high energy rock and roll stylings as he takes you on a Hemi-powered journey from Asbury Park all the way to the streets of his Hometown."

3:30-5:30pm - Nevermind: Seattle’s Tribute to Nirvana

“Nevermind is a Seattle based rock and roll trio that pays tribute to legendary rock band, Nirvana. Born in the heart of Seattle in the old Studio 7 rehearsal spaces they have taken the region by storm by selling out venues with a singer that can shred the mic and guitar, a 6'8" rock bass legend, and a drummer that would make Dave Grohl blush, Nevermind is able to deliver the powerful and energetic performance that captures the sonic energy of Nirvana. Come as you are and experience a performance that will take you through BLEACH, NEVERMIND, Unplugged, IN utero, and a splash zone of DESTROYED GUITARS.”

6-9pm - Readymade: Chili Peppers Tribute

“Est. 2020, Readymade is The PNW's #1 tribute to the music of the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
The band's three seasoned instrumentalists are Nate Bushmaker (A Band Called Celia), Zak Melang (Supersonic Soul Pimps), and Chase Culp (Point One) playing the parts of "John Frusciante", "Flea", and "Chad Smith", respectively. Readymade found their free spirited "Anthony Kiedis" when a mutual friend spotted Derek Sepesy crushing "the Zephyr Song" at weeknight karaoke! Readymade is dedicated to recreating the look, sound and ecstatic live energy of the iconic California rockers to the PNW with every performance!”

Food Trucks
  • Tacos and Beer 12pm -until Sold Out
  • Oskars Pizza 4pm - until Sold Out
  • Impeckable Chicken 4pm - until Sold Out

Seattle Beer Week will raise funds for North Helpline

Monday, May 8, 2023

Hellbent Brewing, Watershed Pub /Kitchen, Project 9 Brewing, and local community partners have come together to organize the 6th annual Seattle Beer Week event that features Hellbent Brewing’s award-winning GateCity IPA.

GateCity, a combination of the two Seattle neighborhoods, Northgate and Lake City, celebrates the North Seattle community by raising funds for North Helpline, a food access and homelessness prevention nonprofit that’s been serving our community for over 30 years.

For the owners of Hellbent Brewing Company, community means more than just those that visit their brewery taproom. It is also their impact on the neighborhood they call home. That is why each year, they support Noth Helpline with the Gate City Project.

Join North Helpline and community partners for five community pop-ups held during Seattle Beer Week May 19th through 26, 2023.

Gate City IPA will be on tap at local bars around the city! Stay tuned to the North Helpline website page to see the full list when it’s announced in mid-May.

Events during Beer Week
  • May 19th, Fri, 6-9pm – Hellbent Launch Party (21+)
  • May 22nd, Mon, 7-9pm – Trivia Night at Broadview Taphouse (All Ages)
  • May 23rd, Tues, 7-9pm – Trivia Night at Watershed Pub (All Ages)
  • May 25th, Thru, 6-9pm – Project 9 Brewing Celebration (21+)
  • May 26th, Fri, 5-8pm – Growler Guys Closing Ceremony (21+)

Everyone is invited to attend, support local businesses, and raise funds for a local nonprofit. Please be sure to check with local bars in your area if they are interested in having Gate City on tap! Also, please check the age requirements of each venue before attending.

North Helpline serves the local community through two food banks, a home grocery delivery program, and direct financial assistance for rent and utilities.

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits were cut in March 2023, affecting over 500,000 households in Washington who will lose a total of about $95 million a month in food assistance. It is essential that we support local organizations like North Helpline that are working to address this “Hunger Cliff.”

Calling all artists - create a design for Hellbent Brewing's latest Gate City IPA

Tuesday, March 14, 2023

Hellbent Brewing in Lake City is seeking submissions for art to feature during their GateCity event this May!

Hellbent Brewing brews their gold-award winning Gate City IPA, and funds are raised for North Helpline by local businesses.

The design will be used on this year’s cans, pint glasses, and a new shirt (same design for all 3)!

The art can be whatever you want, but it should in some way reflect the Lake City neighborhood. We’re hoping to bring a splash of color to the event this year!

The design can feature artist accreditation and the selected artist will be paid.

Please submit your designs by end of day, Monday, March 27th

Hellbent Brewing and Watershed Pub and Kitchen collaborate to bring the award-winning GateCity IPA to the community during Seattle Beer Week.

The annual project serves as a fundraiser for North Helpline, a local community services organization.

Participating locations will donate $1 per pint of GateCity IPA sold to support the Northgate and Lake City communities (hence “GateCity IPA”) by supporting the important work of North Helpline.

Retired Shoreline teachers explore micro-brewery owned by Shoreline natives in Puerto Vallarta

Sunday, October 9, 2022

By Arnie Moreno

In the Zona Romantica of Puerto Vallarta is a local micro-brewery that makes and markets Seattle style beers. Located on a cobblestone street in Old Town Puerto Vallarta, is Monzon Brewing Company.

In January of 2021, Rebecca and I, two retired Shoreline teachers, decided to take a break from Winter’s dark rainy days in the Pacific Northwest. We found a AirBnB rental home that was located in the Zone Romantica that was walking distance to the Zona shops, Malecon, restaurants, open air markets, taco stands and beaches.

We were surrounded by local Mexican neighbors and luxury condos. It was a dream come true to spend the whole month soaking up the sun, golf, tennis and Mexican art and culture.

We scheduled a walking tour of Old Town Zona Romantica with a local guide, which I highly recommend if you are new to PV.

At the end of our tour, our guide told us that here was a new brewery making Seattle style IPA’s in the Zona and asked us if we wanted go to the brewery, since he knew we were from the Seattle area.

Of course, we were very thirsty since it was 80 degrees that day in PV, so our small tour group went to Monzon Brewery. We found the brewery after a short two block walk, and went to the top patio for a beverage.

We found a table and before sitting down I heard “Mr. Moreno!“. To my surprise it was a former Shorewood student of mine, Reid Mortimer. As a retired teacher, I encounter former students frequently.

I never expected to meet one in Puerto Vallarta.

He told me that he was the owner and brewer for Monzon Brewery. Reid grew up in Shoreline and told me his story of meeting his wife, Miranda, also a Shoreline native, and their travels to Bombay, India, and working at a brewery, Mumbai’s first brewery, and learning the microbrew craft.

Needless to say, the beer was delicious and so fun seeing my old student Reid in Puerto Vallarta.

Rebecca and I are returning to Puerto Vallarta again this January and February and look forward to visiting Reid and Miranda at Monzon Brewery again!

If you are in Puerto Vallarta, be sure to visit the Zone Romantica and stop by to taste great IPA’s, Pilsners and say hi to Reid and Miranda Mortimer at Monzon Brewing

2022 Brewfest cancelled

Saturday, July 23, 2022

Statement from Brewfest organizers

We deeply regret that we will be cancelling the 4-Corners BrewFest 2022, postponing our 10th Annual Celebration for one more year.

Because of structural changes to businesses in general over the last couple of years, many of our beloved brewers are finding themselves in that widespread condition of being short-staffed, and either unable to participate this year, or stretched very thin.

In addition, our own volunteer support has been difficult to muster.

Our Brewfest is, in our opinion, the  best because brewers get great exposure to an audience they would not ordinarily meet.

They get real conversations with attendees rather than just serving a line. Attendees get a wide sampling of our amazing local brew offerings, face time with brewers, and a great outdoor afternoon in the most intimate BrewFest setting around. We are committed to that vision.

So, because we value both our brewers and our brewfesters, we will postpone one more year.

If you purchased a ticket, you will get a full refund. If you paid by credit card through Eventbrite, you will see those charges refunded to your card.

If you purchased through Beach House, we will contact you about how to return your check or where to send reimbursement if you paid cash.

Thank you all for your support and interest. We hope the world has shifted back into our favor next year, and we can celebrate together.

4-Corners BrewFest August 6, 2022

Monday, July 11, 2022

4-Corners BrewFest Saturday, August 6, 2022 from 3:00 to 7:00pm
Innis Arden Clubhouse, 1430 NW 188th Street

Admission includes food, music, a 5-oz tasting glass and 12 tasting tokens for some of the finest craft beers around.

Proceeds benefit Shoreline neighborhood associations of Hillwood, Innis Arden, Richmond Beach, and Richmond Highlands plus this year’s charity— The Immigrant and Refugee Ministry: Circle of Welcome.

"We are a Circle of Welcome team that operates through Lutheran Community Services NW, which promotes “the ling welcome,” which requires accompanying the family for at least a year, rather than the usual 3 months or 6 months.
"Our amazing, dedicated volunteers come from three churches: St. Luke Catholic Church, First Lutheran of Richmond Beach, and Richmond Beach Congressional Church.
"We are currently resettling a family of 10 from Afghanistan. The family was evacuated because the father served as a security guard protecting US forces for 15 years. We welcome our families at the airport, find permanent housing for them and fill the new apartment with furniture, supplies, and culturally appropriate food.
"School registration, employment, cultural orientation, tutoring support, and medical and dental appointments are priorities. "

Want to volunteer? Sign Up here!
A two-hour shift earns you a free ticket! We're looking for help throughout the event.

Questions? Shoot us an email at 4cornersshoreline@gmail.com
Because it is small and local, BrewFest is also a little quirky - we give out trophies for categories like "fastest blown keg,"  "most pulls," and the coveted "Golden Growler" (People's Choice). YOU help decide who goes home with bragging rights!

It's a fantastic afternoon of community, great beer and cider, good food, and lots of smiles. What's better than chatting up your favorite brewers, meeting new ones, and supporting nonprofits all in the same afternoon?

We hope to see you there!

Monka Brewery reopens with outdoor seating

Friday, October 2, 2020

Story and photos by Cynthia Sheridan

When Devin Walker got a job with Seattle’s Georgetown Brewery almost 20 years ago he learned a lot about brewing and he also fell in love with the beer business. Then life intervened and Devin needed a higher paying job to support his family.

Three kids later he and Trez McBean opened the Monka Brewery in 2017 and turned it into a successful business venture…until the Covid-19 virus made brewing unprofitable.

Trez McBean and Devin Walker on their new patio

To support the reopening of their business this month, Devin and Trez have added a lovely outdoor patio with plenty of room for 12 to 14 patrons.

The indoor brewery is also open and seats an equal amount of people. These are enthusiastic young proprietors who are happy to talk about Shoreline Rotary, their three kids in Shoreline Schools and how they’ve put down roots in a home near the Shoreline light rail station.

The Monka Brewery name is a tribute to Trez's mother, whom the grandkids called Monka. Her name was Teresa Irene McGee. She passed a few months after they got the keys to the space and it took them a year to get all the licensing and get the space ready. She died Aug 2017, and they opened in June of 2018.

Monka Brewery is open at 17211 15th Ave NE Shoreline 98155, in the North City Business District.

They are eat-in or food to go. Check out the menu and a wonderful selection of home-brewed refreshments.

Gallagher’s Where-U-Brew of Edmonds closes for good

Saturday, July 18, 2020

Gallaghers’ Where-U-Brew doors will be permanently closed.

Fans of the 4-Corners BrewFest will be familiar with Gallaghers. They have won the coveted Golden Growler in three different years: 2012 Maui Wowie Mango IPA, 2013 Weak in the Knees IPA, 2016 Island Paradise Summer Ale.

Tom and Marcie Kretzler of Gallaghers
Marcie Kretzler and husband Tom have owned Gallaghers’ in the Harbor Square Business Complex
at 180 W. Dayton Street #105 in Edmonds since 2014.

The couple acquired the brew-your-own-beer establishment from Dennis Gallagher, who founded it in 1995.

Gallagher’s Where-U-Brew was a brew-on-premises that specialized in helping its clients make and bottle their own beer, wine, cider, and rootbeer. Gallagher’s also had a rotating selection of their own beers on tap.

“The past few years have been a struggle, and the recent pandemic has made it impossible for us to continue,” Kretzler wrote on the Gallaghers’ website.
“We have agonized over this decision and we are forced to accept this as reality. Tom and I have been blessed with so many customers that we now call friends, and wish there was another way to keep it open.
“From the bottom of our hearts, we thank each of you for your support these past years and wish you all health and happiness...You have touched our lives and we will miss you dearly.”

It’s coming…. BrewFest 2019

Sunday, June 2, 2019

On Saturday, August 10, 2019, 4-Corners.org will host the 9th Annual BrewFest at the Innis Arden Clubhouse. This year, we celebrate “AugToberfest!”

What is BrewFest?

It is the brainchild of Richmond Beach resident Steve Kerr, who envisioned an event that would bring the four neighborhoods of Hillwood, Innis Arden, Richmond Beach, and Richmond Highlands together for a community-building, fundraising good time. It is modeled after the Phinney Ridge BrewFest.

So it’s a fundraiser? Or a community event?

It’s both! Proceeds from the event go to the four neighborhood associations, one nonprofit beneficiary, and 4-Corners.org. The event itself brings community members together to volunteer and/or to enjoy great beer, good food, and live music.

Is attendance limited to residents of those neighborhoods?

No way. Everyone over the age of 21 is welcome to come.

How do I get a ticket? Are they expensive?

Tickets are available online at Brown Paper Tickets and at our local ticket outlet, Beach House Greetings. Your ticket is inclusive – 12 5-oz tastes of local craft brews, food, and live music. The only reason to bring a check or credit card is to bid on live auction items. Tickets are $35, 2/$60, and Designated Drivers at $20.

New this year is Early Bird Pricing, which will run through Father’s Day! Early birds can purchase tickets for $30 or 2/$50.

Wait. You mentioned a nonprofit?

Yes! This year, a portion of the proceeds will go to the North Urban Human Services Alliance (NUHSA). NUHSA advocates for a strong and accessible system of human services in North King County through partnership and collaboration. Learn more about them here.

Tell me more!

For updates and more information on AugToberfest, visit the webpage. Find us also on our Facebook page.

A big step up from a garage!

Text and photos by Johanna Polit

Hemlock State Brewery returns!!

On Friday, May 19th, Hemlock State Brewery opened to the public at their new location at 23601 56th Ave W in Mountlake Terrace.

For the first licensed brewery in Shoreline (founded in 2012), it’s a huge step from the garage-based operation they closed last August as they embarked on this journey to expand and establish a local gathering place. (see previous article)

Local founders and MLT officials at the official ribbon-cutting

Whether you miss their Saturday morning growler fills, their “Hibeernation” on tap at local pubs, or have never heard of them, it’s worth checking them out.

You are sure to find something delicious to suit your taste. Starting with four beers and three ciders on tap, they have room to expand to 20 taps. You can buy a glass to drink there, or get a fresh 32-oz ‘crowler’ or your own growler filled to take away.

Get a pint of beer for $6, or a 32 oz ‘crowler’ to go, filled and sealed while you watch, for $7.

If you didn’t bring your growler, they’ve got you covered with growlers for sale, as well Hemlock State pints and tulip glasses, and super-soft t-shirts.

Kids and dogs are welcome at Hemlock State Brewery

Hemlock State’s founders, some of whom are parents of young kids themselves, really wanted to create a space where adults could enjoy themselves, but also one where families were welcome. What better time to check them out than during this 3-day weekend?

Other useful stuff to know:
  • Hours:
    • Sunday noon-9pm
    • Monday - Thursday 3pm-10pm
    • Friday 3pm-11pm
    • Saturday noon-11pm
  • In-building parking accessible from 236th
  • A few snacks available for purchase
  • Outside food welcome… visit another local business on your way in!
  • Kids and dogs are welcome
  • Non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase
  • Free wi-fi on site
  • More information:
Did we mention they brew on site?

The new space is intentionally built for folks who are interested in beer. They designed the brewing area without glass between their customers and their equipment. Patrons are welcome to chat them up while they brew!

Early Life Speech and Language was founded by the Scottish Rite Masons more than 30 years ago to fill a void. Speech and language services for children are severely limited. Either the child does not qualify for services, services are too expensive, or services are limited by a billable hour or insurance coverage. Early Life Speech and Language currently has clinics in Bremerton, Seattle, Spokane, Walla Walla, and service areas across the state of Washington.

Early Life Speech and Language provides speech and language therapy to children ages 2 – 7 at no cost to the families. One parent said, “Not having to deal with insurance or the financial strain that other speech therapy institutions require allows us as a family to focus on that, our family.”

There will be a more expansive list of breweries than ever before, 21 to be exact. Lowercase, Oakshire, Deschutes, Georgetown, Finnriver Cider, Alaskan, Lagunitas, Wild Ride, Mazama, Diamond Knot, Pear Up Cider, Salish Sea, Middleton, Scuttlebutt, Gallagher’s, Explorer, 192, Mac and Jack’s, Mike’s Hard Lemonade, Postdoc, and Triplehorn Brewing.

Beresford said that “Our auction is awesome. We have several gifts from local Edmonds businesses including the Edmonds Center for the Arts, Red Twig, Scratch Distillery and more. Auction items include high end cigar packages, University of Washington football tickets, dinner and a show packages for the best theaters in town, painting with cats, and so much more!”
