The Drumlin joins Ridgecrest Public House in Downtown Ridgecrest

Wednesday, September 30, 2020

New gathering space in Ridgecrest: The Drumlin

After delays related to the pandemic, the Drumlin is officially opening its doors on Thursday, October 1, next door to the Ridgecrest Public House, which celebrates its own fifth year anniversary on November 1 this year. Two Ridgecrest residents co-own both places.

The original plan for the Drumlin is a comfortable but elegant all ages live music venue for world music, pop, bluegrass and more, with recording equipment and a future kitchen.

The plan for Ridgecrest Pub is to continue to foster the celebrated social function of the bar and expand as a venue for public and private gatherings, from book clubs to weddings, for a reasonable cost.

However, until Phase 4, the best use of both spaces for the community is safe, socially distanced seating for families and small groups of friends for eating dinner from the food trucks out front, or having a drink or two before or after dinner. Both have indoor seating and outdoor patio seating in front and back. Combined, they offer 60 beer and cider taps, and over two dozen wines, all rotating frequently.

Starting October 1, the Drumlin will be open 3-10 pm. Ridgecrest Pub might operate on reduced hours since the Drumlin is the more versatile space during a pandemic. But hours and offerings will expand as quickly as possible, so please check our websites at www.drumlin.pub and www.ridgecrest.pub for updates.

Drumlin is an Irish word for "little hill", in particular long narrow hills created when ice sheets melt, particularly after the last Ice Age. Drumlins are all over the world, and all over Seattle. Phinney Ridge is a drumlin, as is the neighborhood of Ridgecrest.

Ridgecrest food drive gathers 1,117 pounds of food for Hopelink

Sunday, January 5, 2020

Big THANK YOU to everyone who donated and helped with the Ridgecrest Food Drive!

Special thanks to Cafe Aroma and the Ridgecrest Pub for being the collection sites this year.

Each time we took donations in to Hopelink, they were so thankful. All donations to them have been down this year, so what we were able to collect was truly appreciated.

What we can do together as a "community" is incredible. Together we were able to donate 1,117 pounds of food to Hopelink - Shoreline's Food Bank.

Triple play at Ridgecrest Elementary

Friday, June 7, 2013

Ridgecrest Elementary’s Triple Play!
Friday, June 14th, 6:00-8:00pm

Sponsored by the Ridgecrest PTA, the evening of June 14 features three events in one. You can volunteer, donate items, and work at the events, or you can just attend.

Taste of Ridgecrest

This is a free event. Please bring a family favorite dish to share. This is a fun night celebrating the diversity we have in our community. Feel free to dress up in attire showcasing your heritage. We will have fun activities and performances from different cultures, too!

Many volunteers are needed for the craft tables. Shifts are 5:00-7:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm. Contact Melissa Gates.

Silent Auction

There will be many great items to bid on in the Silent Auction, including classroom-themed gift baskets and experiences. It will be a great evening of fun for all!

Help out at our Work Party to organize the auction items on Thursday, June 13 from 6:30-9:00pm. Volunteers will be needed for many different jobs, including closing out the silent auction tables.

We are still in need of items/experiences for the Auction. If you have something to donate, or if you would like to volunteer your time, contact Anne Musquiz.

Book Exchange

Have gently used books that your children don’t read? Save them for the 2nd Annual Book Exchange on June 14 at the Taste of Ridgecrest, and the following Monday, June 17. On June 12 and 13, students and families can bring in a maximum of 10 clean, gently used books per student to the library and receive a Book Buck for every donated book. During the Exchange, students can buy a donated book for one Book Buck. If you bring in the maximum of 10 books, you will get 11 Book Bucks in return. Books must be:

  • An “Everybody” Book: A chapter book or a non-fiction book (no board books)
  • A title that Ridgecrest K-6 students will read (no toddler or adult books)
  • In good, clean shape with few rips, tears, or bent pages, or covers
It's the end of the school year now, but for next fall, remember that you do not have to have children in school to be a member of the PTA and support your local school.

The corner of 165th and 5th NE after work by two
utility districts
By Patty Hale

The Ridgecrest Neighborhood needs your expertise, ideas, and skills. Help plan a public beautification project in the heart of our neighborhood.

Please join us for our first Public Planning Meeting on:
Monday, April 29 at 7pm
Eastside Police Neighborhood Center, 521 NE 165th

Over the winter of 2012-13, Shoreline Water District and Shoreline Fire Department installed systems to increase the water pressure and aid in fire suppression for the Ridgecrest Neighborhood at the southwest corner of 165th & 5th NE. Prior to the work, the corner had been landscaped with trees and shrubs.

The RNA Board has already begun the process to apply for a Mini-Grant from the City of Shoreline, to beatify the corner. Ideas include, landscaping with drought-tolerant ground-cover plants, evergreen vines and shrubs, flowers, neighborhood signage, a public bench, a public art installation, and more. All would help to soften the effects of the utilities and fencing, while creating a sense of place at this core intersection in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood.

The purpose of the Planning Meeting will be to gather ideas and insight from our Ridgecrest Neighbors about how we might make this corner an appealing place to be proud of.

Correction to police blotter - Images Salon not damaged

Tuesday, April 2, 2013

Local reporter and police volunteer Patricia Hale wants to correct an item in the police blotter that reported "Vandalism at Images Styling Salon, 523 NW 165th".

According to Patty, and confirmed by police:

"The vandalism did not happen at Images. It was reported by the owner of Images. Actually - what she was reporting was vandalism at the Eastside Police Neighborhood Center on NE 165th,

"Ridgecrest Neighborhood posted the following on Facebook on March 28th  - with approval from the Shoreline Police Department:"
"Did you happen to notice more activity than usual last week at the Shoreline Police Eastside Neighborhood Center, 521 NE 165th ?
Mid-week, the interior received a fresh coat of paint. That was a good thing!
But, not such good things also happened.
Part of the activity was generated by 2 different crimes that occurred at that location.
Sometime during the evening of March 18th or early morning of the 19th, the glass in the front door was broken. Then on the evening of the 21st or early morning of the 22nd, someone tagged the front windows - using words not appropriate on this page.
If you saw anything suspicious – or have heard anything about who or what –
Please contact Officer Leona Obstler at (206) 391-9995"

Part of the 600 lbs of food collected by Ridgecrest Neighborhood

By Patty Hale

How does a neighborhood manage to collect over 600 pounds of non-perishable food for HopeLink during tough economic times?

The Ridgecrest Neighborhood makes it look easy. The simple answer is to find a convenient and easily accessible drop-off spot.

Cafe Aroma at NE 165th and 5th NE was the drop off

Cafe Aroma at 509 NE 165th partnered with the Ridgecrest Neighborhood to collect food donations through the months of November and December.

Cafe Aroma, a locally owned neighborhood coffee shop (and more) has a a wonderful staff and a drive-up window which made dropping off food donations a breeze.

Getting out the word about the Food Drive in every way possible was integral to a successful event.

Neighborhood bulletin boards, email, Facebook, Websites and posting in the windows of local neighborhood businesses - all done in the hopes of not only generating donations, but also educating residents about the existence of a Shoreline based Food Bank - HOPELINK at 15809 Westminster Way N in the lower Sears parking lot.

The Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association would like to thank all those who participated. And, is proud to announce that the 2012 Food Drive ended with a total of $93.76 in cash and 602 lbs of non-perishable food.

NEIGHBORHOOD FOOD DRIVE

Holiday traditions vary by culture and from family to family but they all revolve around meals with family and friends. Once again, our local food bank, HopeLink, needs our support.

PLEASE DONATE AT CAFE AROMA, 165th and 5th NE (across from the Crest Theatre). Drop off inside or through the drive-thru, and enjoy a great cup of coffee!

Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council puts Artists in Schools

Albert Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.” Doing something creative every day fuels the imagination, and helps learning. That’s why we must bring the arts in all forms to schools.

This year, the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council, together with the Shoreline Public Schools Foundation and Opus Bank Community Foundation, has funded over 20 Artists in Schools projects in our schools. Some are occurring as we speak.

One such project is "Creative Dance with Math Experience" at Ridgecrest Elementary. Artist Debbie Gilbert dances with K-6 students, as they build skills, and connect with math concepts like numbers, shapes, fractions and patterns.

Your support of the Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council helps us fund these efforts. Mark your calendar: Support Artists in Schools by attending the annual Arts Council Gala on Friday, June 22.

The Shoreline-Lake Forest Park Arts Council is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to nurture all of the arts in the community through programs and events, arts education, advocacy, and support for artists and arts organizations. Proceeds from the Gallery at Town Center help fund these programs and events.

Non-perishable food
By Patty Hale

The Ridgecrest Neighborhood Association would like to thank everyone who participated in the Ridgecrest Food Drive for HopeLink food bank over the holidays.

Your efforts helped to make a difference for families in our community.

2011 was a tough year for the Food Bank. Donations were down and need was up. Neighborhood donations helped to stock the shelves with 661 pounds of non-perishable food, valued at almost a thousand dollars.

Local espresso shops Cafe Aroma and Java Jolt were perfect partners for the collection effort. With their drive-up windows, making a donation for HopeLink was as easy as ordering a cup of coffee.

If you did not have an opportunity to make a non-perishable food donation, or would like to make additional donations, you can do so year-round at:

HopeLink
15809 Westminster Way N
Shoreline WA 98133

433 pounds of food donated but much more needed

Wednesday, December 7, 2011

The Ridgecrest Neighborhood continues its push for non-perishable food donations to benefit the Shoreline branch of Hopelink. As of December 6th, a total of 433 pounds of food and $33 in cash have been donated by area residents.

Men at Work in Ridgecrest neighborhood

Monday, May 2, 2011

by Patty Hale

The song "Who Can It Be Now," an '80's release by the band Men at Work, was played out on one block of 8th Ave NE in Shoreline on Wednesday, April 27.

Action on the street in the Ridgecrest Neighborhood by men at work included a training exercise by the Shoreline Fire Department.

Using the hook and ladder truck, along with other apparatus, Fire Department personnel took advantage of the steeply pitched roof at the Tabernacle Baptist Church to practice their rescue and fire fighting techniques.

Instead of cold water putting out a hot fire, Rich works in the back of the Washington Energy service truck readying parts and equipment for the installation of a water heater that will turn cold water hot for an 8th Ave resident.

Men from Kemp West, contracted by Seattle City Light to trim around high voltage transmission lines, were also hard at work.

Cody Holmes
High off the ground, in the boom, is local Ridgecrest resident, Cody Holmes, who has been employed by Kemp West for the past 3 years.

8th Ave resident, Ken Marable using a log splitter, makes quick work of of a back-breaking job as he helps a neighbor with her fire wood.

I am sure that there were also women at work today on 8th. Their toys just weren't as big or as loud.
