Hats off to these Shorecrest athletes!

Henry Sheffield, Shorewood High School rising senior, recently earned the USA Lacrosse Academic All-American honoree for 2021.

He’s one of 16 boys to receive the award in Washington State.

Honorees are “players who exhibit exemplary lacrosse skills, good sportsmanship on the field, and represent high standards of academic achievement in the classroom,” according to USA Lacrosse.

Sheffield was nominated by and plays for Shoreline Lacrosse, a team comprised of players from Shorewood and Shorecrest high schools.

He served as a captain for the team in 2021.

“His hard working dedication is apparent throughout our organization and beyond,” says Shoreline Lacrosse Director and head coach, Walter Valenzuela.
“As a team captain and excellent lacrosse player, to a youth program coach he puts in an amazing effort. He even helped develop a field set-up system for youth games that lowered that burden for all of the volunteers.”

Sheffield’s interest in the game started at the age of three.

“I want to play that sport,” he told his dad after reading a Berenstain Bears book in which the characters were playing lacrosse.

Since third grade, he’s been playing on local lacrosse teams including Shoreline Lacrosse, Edmonds Eagles, and Time Bandits High School Elite.

Shoreline High Schools’ Lacrosse crew rolls into state playoffs with comeback win on Friday

Tuesday, May 7, 2019

Sammy Seliga races up the field
leading a Shorecrest fastbreak

The Shorecrest lacrosse team needed a second half comeback to top the Division 1 Roosevelt Rough Riders in a non-league matchup Friday night for their eighth win in their final nine regular season contests, setting the stage for a first round trip to the Washington State 3A Lacrosse Playoffs.

Again Shorecrest’s seniors led the way for the Scots. WesCo leading scorer Reed Tangeman started off the scoring in the first quarter with his 31st goal of the season, but it was fellow senior tri-captain Calvin Acker that was the first half story for the Scots.

Acker, who started his lacrosse playing days as a first grader in the North Seattle Lacrosse program, the same as many of his Roosevelt opponents on the field, gave an unfriendly welcome to his former teammates, scoring four first quarter goals to stake the Scots to a 5-1 lead.

However, the early deficit didn’t faze the visitors, who came back to tie the score at 6-6 with four straight goals to close out the half, followed by two quick scores to take an 8-6 lead on the Scots early in the 3rd Quarter.

Calvin Acker launches a shot over Roosevelt High defenders

At that point, the third of Shorecrest’s senior captains, Sammy Seliga, along with junior Travis Zapalac, went on a four goal run to turn the game around.

Seliga scored a key goal to stop the six goal streak by Roosevelt and Zapalac followed with three straight goals, two of which came off assists by Seliga, to take control of the game.

Following a 4th quarter goal by Roosevelt to cut the lead to one, Seliga registered his 5th assist of the night on a fast break pass to freshman attackman Otto Begus, who found the net for his second goal of the contest to close out the scoring and seal the 11-9 non-league victory.

The Scots, made up of high school players from both Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools, take their 10-2 record to Snohomish High School on Wednesday night to challenge the Panthers in their first trip to the State Tournament since 2016. Gametime is 7pm.

Shorecrest / Shorewood Lacrosse caps undefeated League season with 18-1 Senior Night victory

Thursday, May 2, 2019

One year ago, Reed Tangeman, Calvin Acker, and Sammy Seliga couldn’t imagine that they would have a Senior Night for lacrosse. But on Tuesday night, the Shorecrest /Shorewood lacrosse tri-captains got to celebrate that Senior Night by leading the Scots to an 18-1 victory over Arlington, capping off an undefeated league season and launching the squad into next week’s playoffs.

Sammy Seliga, Calvin Acker, and Reed Tangeman

WesCo leading scorer and Illinois Institute of Technology commit Tangeman scored 4 goals, Acker added 2 goals and picked a team high 8 groundballs, and WesCo assist leader Seliga stepped in as an emergency goalie, allowing only one goal in his first attempt at the position in over 8 seasons, to go along with 3 assists.

Junior Travis Zapalac led the Scots with 6 goals, and Estaban Guerrero, one of 11 freshmen on the squad, scored his first goal of the season to help support the senior captains.

A rarity in Shoreline High School sports, the lacrosse team is a combined team of both Shorecrest and Shorewood athletes; officially they are Shorecrest.

First year Head Coach Walter Valenzuela has resurrected a program that was winless two seasons ago and didn’t have enough players to field a high school team in 2018.

The seniors will now get to return to the playoffs they competed in as freshmen, which seemed most unlikely when practices started in February.

The Scots, 8-0 in division play, 9-2 overall, conclude their regular season schedule 8pm Friday night with a non-league matchup against Roosevelt High School at Shorecrest High School.

The team can be followed on Twitter at @lfpsholax and on Facebook at LFP-Shoreline Lacrosse. For those interested in the sport, the youth program begins at 3rd grade and information can be found HERE
