Shorewood grad singled out for Water Polo honor

Sunday, March 17, 2024

Elle Fredrickson is a 2020 graduate of Shorewood High School who now attends Santa Clara University in California and plays water polo.

In addition to playing water polo in college, she has played since she was 8 years old at the Innis Arden Swim Club, for a club team based out of Tacoma, and for Shorewood High School.

This week Elle was listed as one of only 22 collegiate women’s water polo players in the entire country to be on the Cutino Award watch list. This is the equivalent of being on the Heisman watch for football.

Named after the late Hall of Fame coach Peter J. Cutino, this watch list was established in 2022 to promote collegiate water polo and honor outstanding players across the nation.

This acknowledgment highlights Fredrickson's exceptional skills and her significant impact on collegiate water polo, both for men's and women's. Selected by coaches, the top 22 athletes are recognized for their outstanding performance.

The senior has recorded 123 career goals with 27 in the young season. Last year, she was featured as the GCC Player of the Week for April 10-16 after she totaled seven goals and five drawn exclusions across three games, including scoring the golden goal winner on the road at Cal State East Bay.

Not only excelling in athletics, Fredrickson also stands out academically. A three-time GCC All-Academic Team award recipient, she has also been named to the 2022 ACWPC All-Academic Team. As she continues to lead both in the pool and in the classroom, Fredrickson shows excellence in collegiate water polo.

High School water polo thriving in Shoreline

Saturday, May 14, 2022

Shorewood and Shorecrest girls water polo teams

Water polo is not yet a sport sanctioned by the Washington State Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA), the governing body for high school sports, but that is not stopping the sport from thriving at Shorewood and Shorecrest.

The popularity of water polo has grown enough that the two Shoreline high schools were each able to field teams this year for the Spring season. In previous years, it had been necessary for the two schools to have a combined team.

The teams compete in a league of approximately 25 high schools around the greater Puget Sound region. As a club sport, the teams are responsible for most of their expenses including: pool rentals, equipment, paying referees, tournament costs, etc. As a result, the players have fundraising responsibilities in addition to practices and games.

The success of these programs is due largely to the work and dedication of Coach Mira Ho of Shorewood and Coach Nick Maxwell of Shorecrest. Nick and Mira have been involved in the water polo community for years. They dedicate countless hours of coaching and teaching. They are active not only at the high school level, but they are also heavily involved with youth polo programs.

The high school regular season wraps up this week. Shorewood will be advancing to the post season that begins with a tournament on May 21-22, 2022 and Shorecrest will fall just short of qualifying.

Regardless of the standings, the season has been a huge success for high school water polo in Shoreline, and the future of the sport is bright.

Coached by Nick Maxwell and Wil Jackson, the Shorewood Boys’ Water Polo team is making its very first appearance at the State Championships this weekend at Curtis High School. Just to qualify for the playoffs, the boys had to beat Newport High School in double overtime. Then to advance on to State, they won with a “golden goal” in the third overtime period against Kentridge High School and beat Auburn Mountainview this past weekend.

To add to the excitement, this is the first time in the history of the current playoff format that four teams from the same division (Bellevue, Mercer Island, Roosevelt, and Shorewood High Schools) have swept all four state tournament berths at one of the two Regional Tournaments.

Shorewood plays Thursday night at 5:00pm at Curtis High School in Tacoma; the Friday and Saturday schedule is determined by wins and losses. For an updated schedule and results, visit the Enumclaw Water Polo blog.

The team is led by six seniors, many of whom have played together for 10+ years with the Innis Arden Water Polo Club. Coach Nick Maxwell is both a founding member of the Innis Arden Water Polo Club and a former Shorewood Water Polo player.

Girls water polo is a club sport that has existed in the area for many years. Because it is not a "sanctioned" sport in Washington, girls from both Shorewood and Shorecrest play on the same team, which is officially a Shorewood club.

According to advisor Jane Blaylock, "It affords an opportunity for otherwise 'rivals' to join together in a demanding sport."

This year's varsity coach is Liliya Shtikel, JV coach is Jenny Waddingham, and team captains are Emily Blaylock (SW) and Marina Stoermer (SC).
