CRISTA Rehab and Skilled Care center closed; residents moved to other facilities

Sunday, August 23, 2020

Building photo courtesy CRISTA

CRISTA has closed the Rehab and Skilled Care center on its campus on Fremont Ave N in Shoreline and placed all of the 67 residents in other facilities.

Their original goal was to have everyone placed by August 31, 2020 but they were able to move everyone by mid-August.

According to a statement by Glen Melin, CRISTA Vice President for Senior Living,

It has been CRISTA’s experience that financing and operating a viable skilled nursing care center has become increasingly challenging for all providers, and particularly for single facility operators such as CRISTA.
While CRISTA is blessed to currently hold a Four-Star Quality Rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the call to meet or exceed ever-developing quality and safety requirements while adapting to modified reimbursement payment models designed to reduce Federal costs has proven unsustainable for CRISTA.

They vowed to make strides to help the staff find other jobs.

CRISTA’s two retirement communities – the Cristwood Retirement Community in Shoreline and Crista Shores in Silverdale – will continue to operate as continuing care retirement communities (CCRC).  They report that they have had no COVID-19 cases in these facilities.

The rehab center was one of the first with an outbreak of novel coronavirus, early in the pandemic. A KUOW story in April reported.

After “multiple” residents of a wing at a CRISTA Senior Living center in Shoreline tested positive for the virus, officials there arranged on March 29 to test everyone who lived or worked on that wing, symptoms or no.

But the virus had beaten them to the punch: 26 residents and 16 staff had COVID-19, the tests revealed.

King county reports 17 COVID-19 deaths associated with the Rehab center, which includes patients, employees and visitors without specifying how many of each. CRISTA did not respond to a request for clarification of COVID-19 numbers.

Grandkids outside Crista Senior Living

Grandma and Grandpa live in CRISTA Senior Living. Residents are self-quarantined in their apartments and no visitors are allowed.

That didn't stop the grandkids from visiting. It just meant that they had to talk a little louder.

Pam Cross spotted this nice family while she was walking her dog.

I spotted this group having a lively visit with the folks on the second floor. Visitors are limited but that didn’t stop them. I smiled all the way home!

“It was a nightmare…” World Concern remembers Haiti earthquake devastation at 10th Anniversary

Sunday, January 19, 2020

World Concern staff assess damage - January 2010

“I heard a noise like a storm,” recalls Efanor Nore, World Concern Haiti Country Representative, of the moment when the magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck his home nation, on January 12, 2010.

He was driving through Haiti’s capital city Port-au-Prince when the road buckled in front of him and another car smashed into the broken concrete. Buildings collapsed before his eyes, and people ran into the streets, screaming for help.

“It was a nightmare,” said Nore, as he recounts the day no Haitian will ever forget.

Sunday, January 12, 2020, marked the 10-year anniversary of the devastating quake that hit Port-au-Prince at 4:53pm local time. The disaster caused an estimated 300,000 deaths, displaced more than a million people, and damaged nearly half of all structures in the epicentral area.

World Concern, based in Shoreline, launched a massive response that assisted tens of thousands of people who were affected by the disaster.

Initial aid focused on meeting immediate needs for shelter, water, medical care, and income. In the months that followed, World Concern provided transitional shelters to families who lost their homes, and cash grants to families and business owners to restart businesses that were lost, among other activities.

Since 2010, World Concern has implemented multiple disaster risk reduction projects aimed at equipping families and communities to be better prepared and more resilient in the face of recurring disasters, particularly weather-related disasters, with a goal of bringing national disaster plans that are in place down to the household level, where training and equipping are needed most.

“Community members have to own the process,” explains World Concern Deputy Director of Disaster Response, Maggie Konstanski. “At World Concern, we don’t see disaster as a one-time event, but always aim to leave a community more resilient and protected than before.”
“When communities are truly equipped with early warning systems, trained on how to use them, and they’re owned at the community level, and an effective, safe plan is in place, it does save lives,” says Konstanski. “The community wants to protect and save themselves. We’re giving them the knowledge and tools to protect themselves.”

Despite efforts by the Haitian community, aid organizations, and the government, the unique and extensive challenges in Haiti have prolonged and even crippled rebuilding efforts. Nore believes only about 3% of buildings in Port-au-Prince have been rebuilt in 10 years. And an estimated 38,000 people still live in tents and makeshift camps that were set up after the quake.

Corruption, gang violence, political crisis, and drugs have left the city in a state of ruin Nore feels is even worse than 2010.

Is there hope for Haiti? Nore believes so.

“Haiti is really resilient. Even at this time of political crisis … Haitians still have hope,” he said.
“They think a new day will come where people around the world will use the example of what Haiti has faced over the past 100 years of suffering to learn … The time of Haiti will come,” he said.
“We continue to be an example—positively. We face more than any civilization has faced in the past. We hope to use our past experience to move forward.”

Shoreline Council candidate David Chen resigns from his position at CRISTA over their stand on same-sex relationships

Thursday, September 12, 2019

David Chen is a candidate for
Shoreline City Council Pos 4
In light of a letter disavowing same-sex relationships sent to staff and families of students at King’s High School in Shoreline from parent organization CRISTA Ministries, David Chen resigned from his position as CRISTA’s General Counsel and released the following statement:

“Every person — regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, race, and religion — deserves equal rights and to be treated with dignity and respect. The letter sent by my former employer in July detailing their anti-LGBTQ+ beliefs made working for them untenable. The positions reflected in CRISTA’s letter are wrong. This kind of discrimination by an organization that is supposed to support and educate students is completely unacceptable.
“As the father of three young children I’m proud to stand up for what I believe in and lead by example. On City Council, I will listen to and uplift the voices of underrepresented communities as I have through my work with the Dale Turner YMCA, Sounders RAVE Foundation, and Vision House. I stand with Shoreline’s LGBTQ+ students, teachers, and families.”

David Chen is a candidate for Shoreline City Council Position 4.

CRISTA Ministries begins formal process to identify successor to President & CEO Bob Lonac

Sunday, June 3, 2018

Board of Trustees for CRISTA Ministries has formally initiated a process that will eventually conclude with the hiring of a successor to President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Lonac.

The future hire will become only the sixth individual to serve in the role during the 69-year history of the organization.

Appointed by the CRISTA Board in 2006, Lonac arrived following distinguished tenures with Young Life and the International Justice Mission. Since his arrival, overall fundraising revenue for the seven ministries that comprise the CRISTA family has nearly tripled.

Through the efforts of Lonac and his team, the organization has been awarded 4-star status by Charity Navigator, and has been consistently recognized nationally as a “Best Christian Workplace” by the Best Christian Workplace Institute. Today, the ministries of CRISTA collectively serve over 8 million people each year around the world through education, broadcast media, global development, equipping veterinarians, youth camps and senior living.

Under the direction of Chairman Tim Jenkins, the CRISTA Board of Trustees is dedicated to finding the right individual to take the reins of overseeing one of the largest and most respected non-profit organizations in the region. A Presidential Search Committee was created and has retained CarterBaldwin (carterbaldwin.com) to assist with the search to identify outstanding candidates for the post.

Stated Jenkins: “Bob Lonac has transformed CRISTA by bringing out the best in its people; helping them to love God by serving others. Bob’s inspired leadership has guided CRISTA through many important changes and achievements.
"Bob will leave the CRISTA family of ministries in a state of being highly unique, healthy, and with abundant opportunity in front of it, both here in the Pacific Northwest and throughout the world.
"As we enter the process to identify the right individual called to lead CRISTA toward the bright future ahead, we anticipate this role to be highly sought-after and expect a talented and diverse pool of candidates.”

After a final candidate has been identified and selected by the Presidential Search Committee, the full CRISTA Board of Trustees will vote to confirm the individual. Prior to his retirement from CRISTA, Lonac will remain in place for a period to assist with onboarding his successor.

CRISTA is a family of seven ministries united by a shared mission to love God by serving people here and around the world. Founded in 1949, CRISTA is comprised of King’s Schools, CRISTA Senior Living, World Concern, CRISTA Media, Seattle Urban Academy, CRISTA Camps and Christian Veterinary Mission. CRISTA’s world headquarters are located on a 55-acre campus in Shoreline.

A thousand people on the streets Saturday for the S.O.S. 5k

2015 5k run/walk

World Concern Fights Child Trafficking with annual S.O.S. 5K Saturday morning in Hillwood neighborhood by CRISTA.

World Concern’s 10th annual S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) 5K will hits the streets of Shoreline Saturday, May 12, 2018, starting at 9am from the CRISTA campus at 19303 Fremont Ave N Shoreline 98133

Extreme poverty leaves many children in Southeast Asia alone and vulnerable, making them primary targets for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

On a recent trip to Bangladesh, World Concern staff met a mother named Shajada who was devastated by her 5-year-old son’s disappearance. “I'm afraid he was taken and sold,” she said through tears. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon in countries where World Concern is working to protect children.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal activity in the world. World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the dangers of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely.

On Saturday, May 12, more than 1,000 people are expected to run in World Concern’s annual 5k S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) to raise awareness and funds to fight child trafficking.

“Our goal is for each child to have a bright future,” says Selina Prem Kumar, Sri Lanka country director for World Concern. “They are the only hope for the future.”

World Concern celebrates $6.4 million gift - largest in its history

Tuesday, November 28, 2017

From left: World Concern President Jacinta Tegman, CRISTA Ministries Chief Development Officer Dave Eller and Foundation Relations Officer Patricia Wiebe King celebrate a $6.4 million donation from the 25-40 Foundation, the largest gift in World Concern’s 62-year history.

World Concern, a Shoreline-based Christian relief and development agency, received the largest gift in the organization’s 62-year history, and celebrated the donation on Giving Tuesday, an annual day of giving promoted by charities in response to Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

The $6.4 million gift was given by the 25-40 Foundation, a private family foundation that has supported World Concern’s community development work in Africa since 2013.

The donation will fund the expansion of World Concern’s One Village Transformed program, a sustainable transformational development program that tackles extreme poverty by empowering community members to plan and implement projects themselves.

World Concern President Jacinta Tegman expressed her gratitude on behalf of the organization.

“Two years ago, we set out on a strategic course to expand World Concern’s reach to more people in great need in some of the world’s hardest to reach places. We planned to launch 82 new villages through our One Village Transformed initiative over five years.
"At that time, we felt the clear call to this mission, but we knew we had to pray for such a massive growth plan to be funded. We stepped out in faith, trusting God that his promises of provision in Matthew 6 would be fulfilled. Today, because of the heartfelt generosity of the 25-40 Foundation, we are seeing this come to fruition,” she said.

This funding will impact the lives of at least 30,000 people in Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Uganda, Chad and Somalia, and will enable World Concern to launch an additional 15 villages over the course of the next six years.

“This family has such selfless compassion for people in need, and they’re savvy to dig below the surface and really understand how community development works,” said Patricia Wiebe King, Foundation Relations Officer.
“We’re grateful for their confidence in the work of World Concern, resulting in this incredible gift to close out their foundation.”

HFC awards $3 million bond to CRISTA for its retirement communities

Saturday, October 3, 2015

The Washington State Housing Finance Commission recently approved $48.5 million in financing for new affordable apartments and renovations to existing ones in Puget Sound and Spokane.

The Commission finances affordable housing and nonprofit housing by issuing tax-exempt bonds or notes and allocating Low-Income Housing Tax Credits.

Tax-exempt bonds allow developers to borrow at lower interest rates to create or renovate affordable housing, while the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit allows them to raise capital by selling the credits to investors. (The dollar amount is the estimated tax credit equity over ten years.)

In Shoreline a $3 million tax-tempt bond was awarded to CRISTA Ministries for their facilities in Shoreline and Silverdale.

Two CRISTA continuing-care retirement communities, totaling 664 units, will be rehabilitated. These nonprofit senior facilities collectively include 385 independent living units, 127 assisted living units, and 152 skilled nursing units.

Other nearby projects included Edmonds Community College Student Housing, 68th Ave W and 200th St SW in Lynnwood, and Mountlake Senior Living, 5525 244th St SW in Mountlake Terrace.
