Magnitude 7.2 earthquake hits crisis-plagued Haiti

Monday, August 16, 2021

World Concern Staff are Safe as Agency Prepares to Respond

August 14, 2021 (PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti) – Saturday, August 14, at approximately 8:26am EST a magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck Haiti 8 km (5 miles) from the town of Petit Trou de Nippes, about 150 km west of the capital city of Port-au-Prince.

Initial reports indicate the potential for high casualties and widespread disaster. It is expected that the aftershocks will cause more damage than the original earthquake event. Response efforts could be further complicated by Tropical Storm Grace, which is expected to reach Haiti on Monday or Tuesday, bringing heavy rain.

The epicenter of the earthquake was in one of World Concern’s current areas of operation, and there are widespread impacts on all of World Concern’s project areas. Hospitals are overwhelmed with injuries. World Concern is closely monitoring the situation and preparing to respond.

All World Concern staff are safe and accounted for as of 10:00am EST. One staff member reports her home was damaged and she has left with her children. Another reported he obtained minor scrapes in his home during the earthquake.

“I am very saddened to hear of the latest disaster to hit the country of Haiti, a country reeling from so much pain,” said World Concern President, Nick Archer. “We are thankful that our staff are safe, and we ask our supporters to pray for those affected at this time.”

Shoreline-based World Concern responds to India COVID-19 crisis

Friday, May 7, 2021

Through its partners on the ground in India, Shoreline-based World Concern is responding to meet critical needs in the India COVID-19 crisis: oxygen, PPEs, and vital funds for community medical facilities to purchase supplies quickly and locally.

With millions of people living in extreme poverty in India, nationwide lockdowns mean poor families have no source of food or income. Vouchers for cash and food are critical to saving lives as well.

Yesterday, India reported 3,780 people died from the virus in one day and there were 382,315 new cases — two grim records for the country. But it’s likely much worse than those numbers indicate. Some say less than 5% of cases are being reported. Officials fear that 700,000 people could die in the next three months.

As a member of the Integral Alliance, a network of Christian international disaster response and development organizations, World Concern is able to join the response and rally supporters here in the U.S., offering them a way to help in a crisis like this.

Cases are rising to dangerous levels in Nepal, Bangladesh, and other countries bordering India where World Concern works. Preparations for responses in these countries are being made as well.

World Concern is calling for prayer and encouraging Americans to consider donating to organizations serving or partnering in India. The needs are massive and help from around the world is needed.

World Concern responds to worsening drought in Kenya

Friday, August 30, 2019

Water holes in Kenya are drying up
World Concern staff in the Samburu region of Northern Kenya are growing increasingly concerned as they witness the effects of ongoing drought on families in villages where World Concern works.

Lack of water and food are causing families to leave their homes in search of water and pasture for surviving livestock.

Many children are severely malnourished and need immediate intervention.

“The little water that was in the water pans dried up two weeks ago and livestock have nothing to feed on,” said Rose Ogolla, Project Manager for World Concern.
“This has led to an immediate mass migration. People are walking for up to 90 miles in search of water and pasture, usually leaving women, children, the disabled, and the elderly behind.
"If the situation worsens in the next two months, there will be high cases of severe acute malnutrition, extreme water scarcity, increased respiratory tract infections, and water borne diseases.”

World Concern is providing emergency cash grants to families in Samburu, as well as ready-to-eat therapeutic nutrition to malnourished children, in partnership with the Ministry of Health. World Concern has also installed rainwater catchment systems and plans to build sand dams in the area, but the April/May long rains failed, and rain is not expected until the end of October.

On Saturday morning, May 11, 2019, World Concern's 11th annual S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) 5k attracted over a thousand runners to the Crista campus.

Kristin Spencer and Jody Okamura display the event t-shirt given to run participants.

Crista is the parent organization for World Concern, a worldwide charity, headquartered in Shoreline on Fremont in the Hillwood neighborhood.

Sarah Taylor of FM 105.3 Spirit radio and Mimi Jung of King TV announced the event.

World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children in southeast Asia by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the dangers of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely.

“World Concern’s work with children is driven by the fact that the most vulnerable in our world need our protection, particularly our children,” Nick Archer, Vice President of World Concern said.

“Millions of children remain vulnerable to trafficking due to circumstances beyond their, or even their families, control.”

2015 5k run/walk

World Concern Fights Child Trafficking with annual S.O.S. 5K Saturday morning in Hillwood neighborhood by CRISTA.

World Concern’s 10th annual S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) 5K will hits the streets of Shoreline Saturday, May 12, 2018, starting at 9am from the CRISTA campus at 19303 Fremont Ave N Shoreline 98133

Extreme poverty leaves many children in Southeast Asia alone and vulnerable, making them primary targets for sexual exploitation and human trafficking.

On a recent trip to Bangladesh, World Concern staff met a mother named Shajada who was devastated by her 5-year-old son’s disappearance. “I'm afraid he was taken and sold,” she said through tears. Unfortunately, this is not uncommon in countries where World Concern is working to protect children.

Human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal activity in the world. World Concern works to prevent the trafficking, exploitation, and abuse of children by operating a hotline for reporting suspected cases of child endangerment, educating children and parents about the dangers of trafficking, and equipping them with job skills to earn income safely.

On Saturday, May 12, more than 1,000 people are expected to run in World Concern’s annual 5k S.O.S. (Seek Out and Stop trafficking) to raise awareness and funds to fight child trafficking.

“Our goal is for each child to have a bright future,” says Selina Prem Kumar, Sri Lanka country director for World Concern. “They are the only hope for the future.”

Shoreline's World Concern aids 22,000 Rohingya refugees

Sunday, November 19, 2017

World Concern, a Shoreline-based humanitarian agency, is distributing critical shelter materials and hygiene kits to 22,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh camps.

Working in coordination with Integral Alliance partners Medair, a Swiss aid agency, World Concern is reaching refugee families with desperately needed emergency supplies to shelter and protect vulnerable families who fled extreme violence with nothing.

More than 600,000 Rohingya refugees have arrived in overcrowded refugee camps and makeshift settlements near the Myanmar border in Bangladesh since August 25, 2017. Tens of thousands of people, mostly women and children, are in need of shelter, food, water, and medical care.

“We’re specifically targeting people who have been left out of aid distributions,” said World Concern Director of Disaster Response Chris Sheach. “We’re reaching people who have not had a roof over their heads in six weeks since they left Myanmar.”

Sheach said the situation there is the worst he’s seen in his career. Many children are visibly malnourished and suffering from diarrhea and skin diseases.

Fifty-one-year-old Aadil was among 1,250 refugees who received emergency supplies today. “I lost everything, my house and contents, cows, goats and a huge amount of land with rice. Fortunately my family is fine, though struggling. I cannot say thank you enough,” he said.

World Concern will continue to assist thousands of refugees through November and ramp up the response in the coming months as funding allows. You can donate online

World Concern responds to Drought Crisis in Somalia

Wednesday, March 29, 2017

Somalia drought - the lake is drying up

Shoreline-based humanitarian organization World Concern is responding to the worsening drought crisis in Somalia.

According to UNOCHA, 6.2 million people in Somalia — half the population — are facing acute food insecurity. Of these, nearly 3 million need urgent, life-saving assistance. The prolonged severe drought is raising fears of famine equal to or worse than the 2011 Horn of Africa famine that killed 260,000 people.

“We are gravely concerned about the worsening drought crisis unfolding right now in Somalia. This severe drought is threatening the lives of children and families who are in dire need of immediate assistance. Families have lost entire herds of livestock -- their only source of income, and are migrating in search of food and water,” said World Concern President Jacinta Tegman.
“World Concern has worked in Somalia for 35 years, and we’re on the front lines of this disaster. We were there during the 2011 famine, and we’re responding again now with emergency aid to those who are suffering. We ask for prayers and support to assist as many as possible.”

World Concern is delivering emergency water to 10 communities, and cash transfers and emergency supplies to drought-affected families in the Sool and Sanaag regions of Somaliland. Over the next four months, 84 trucks, each carrying 8,000 liters of water, will deliver water to communities in need. And more than 1,300 families will receive cash transfers to buy food and meet critical needs.

More than 360,000 children in Somalia are acutely malnourished.

Two-year-old Saleban was visibly thin and had suffered from diarrhea for two-and-a-half months when World Concern staff discovered the toddler during an assessment of the village where his family is staying temporarily.

The family traveled here in search of water and food after losing all of their animals to the drought, said his mother, Xaawo. World Concern helped Saleban get to the hospital, where he’s receiving treatment for severe acute malnutrition.

“We are very grateful to World Concern for their help and kindness that they have shown us by taking care of our son,” said Xaawo.

The family also received emergency food rations and cash for food.

Tuesday, June 28, 2016

World Concern, a Shoreline-based Christian humanitarian organization, has suspended activity and evacuated staff from Wau, South Sudan, after fighting erupted in the city on June 24 and 25.

World Concern operates One Village Transformed™ development programs in communities surrounding Wau, and serves thousands of people through projects that address livelihoods, agriculture, water, sanitation, hygiene, and education.

“Due to the intensity of the gunfire, we decided to evacuate out of the town,” said World Concern South Sudan Country Director Harun Ringera.

The number of casualties is unknown, but staff report hearing of looting and burning of homes in town, as well as loss of life. Friday, October 2, 2015

On Saturday, September 26, more than 400 supporters and guests celebrated the 60th anniversary of World Concern, a Shoreline-based Christian humanitarian organization.

The event, called Transform, was held at the Future of Flight Aviation Center in Mukilteo, and raised $367,000 to help transform lives in some of the world’s poorest countries.

“I am overwhelmed with gratitude for the amazing generosity of World Concern supporters and friends,” said World Concern President Jacinta Tegman.
“On Saturday night those in attendance gave enough to deeply impact more than 60,000 lives. Because of this, many of the world’s poorest people will have access to clean water, education, and essential nutrition. It was a joy to celebrate our 60-year history and at the same time make a difference in vulnerable lives and communities.”

Founded in 1955 by Seattle physician Wilbert Saunders and pharmacist Jim McCoy, World Concern began as Medicine for Missions, which supplied medicine to clinics and hospitals overseas. In 1970 Medicine for Missions officially joined CRISTA Ministries and in 1976, was renamed World Concern.

World Concern staff continue work in Nepal after the second earthquake

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake shook the devastated country of Nepal on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. Staff from Shoreline-based World Concern were already on the ground in Nepal after the first earthquake on April 25. They all reported in as safe, but reported scenes of devastation and people in terror.

At least 68 people were confirmed dead and more than 1,000 injured from the quake, which was followed by numerous aftershocks, including one magnitude 6.3 tremor. The epicenter was southeast of Kodari (Sindhupalchowk District), 76 km northeast of Kathmandu – an area already affected by the April 25 quake.

more remote villages with food and shelter materials

World Concern had been assessing areas hit by the April 25 quake and responding to the needs of people in remote communities with food, shelter materials, water purification tablets, and emergency supplies.

“The worst hit villages are east and east southeast where we hiked in. All homes are gone there,” wrote World Concern Asia Area Director Mark Estes in a brief update from 3,500 feet up in the Himalayan foothills. “On the move. Distribution complete for this morning.”
“One of the aftershocks sounded like a truck hitting a wall,” said Chris Sheach, deputy director of disaster response, who is coordinating World Concern’s relief efforts from Kathmandu.

Because of the quick response of donors, emergency supplies quickly reached families in the village of Bhotechaur in the Sindhupalchok district, where about 1,200 families live.

Villagers described the terrifying moments after the earthquake. Tears flowed as they recalled people screaming and running from buildings as they crumbled. Rubble and the sound of Injured people were crying out for help filled the streets.

Here's a staffer's blog post from right after the second quake.
