Comics and Cosplay at Shoreline Library for comic book fans

Tuesday, May 9, 2023

Browsers check out the offerings at Shoreline Library comic book day

According to Popverse.com, Free Comic Book Day was the brainchild of retailer Joe Field in 2001, inspired by Baskin-Robbins’ “Free Scoop Night” promotional efforts at his local ice cream parlor.

Darth Vader and R2D2 had a brief skirmish at the library

The first FCBD took place the next year, giving away more than two million comic books from just four publishers. It was such a success that it quickly became an annual event.

Time for a photo op with Captain America at the Shoreline Library

It is held the first Saturday in May, this year on May 6, 2023, at participating libraries and stores. Locally, the Shoreline Library and Arcane Comics in Shoreline can be counted on to participate.

Comic book day brings some interesting patrons to the library

The Shoreline Library welcomes cosplayers for the event, delighting fans and all library patrons with appearances by R2D2, Storm Troopers, and other characters.

Boxes of comics at Arcane Comics stretched across two storefronts

Arcane Comics, with less interior space than the library, put their offerings in a long row of boxes in front of the store so shoppers could browse at will.

Shoppers went inside the store as well to check out the offerings

Of course they have the distinct advantage of being open year-round! They are located in Parkwood Plaza at 15202 Aurora Ave N, Shoreline WA 98133, across the street from Jersey's Great Food and Spirits.

Did you have comics or collectibles stolen recently? Seattle Police may have them

Friday, November 5, 2021

By Detective Patrick Michaud
Seattle Police

A large cache of collectibles are Far From Home, having been taken by thieves and recovered by Seattle police during an October investigation. Now detectives are trying to find their Origins and return them to their rightful owner.

Officers investigating a stolen box truck in October recovered multiple containers full of vintage comic books, Pop! figurines, and action figures. Detectives followed several leads in an attempt to track down the owner of the items, but came up short of their Endgame (returning them).

If you believe these items may be yours, or know someone who recently lost a number of similar items in a theft, please contact detectives with some proof of ownership so we can give these items a proper Homecoming. If you have any similar items in storage, but haven’t checked on them recently, please do so. If anything’s missing, please make a report.

If no one claims these items, we, by policy have to destroy them. Help save these comics and collectibles from an Apocalypse and contact detectives at SPDGIU@Seattle.gov and reference case number 2021-276209.

Free comic book day at Arcane Comics - pandemic style

Thursday, August 19, 2021

How do you allow people to browse the racks for free comic books and still maintain social distancing? How do you protect the children who will make up at least half of your browsers?

Easy. You put the racks outside in the parking lot!

Arcane Comics in Parkwood Plaza 15202 Aurora Ave N Suite A, Shoreline, WA 98133 didn't want to miss the annual Free Comic Book Day so they simply moved the racks of free comics outside the store.

Masked shoppers browsed inside the store, as well. Comics / graphic novels have an increasingly wide audience and Arcane is happy to provide.

Comic Book Historian tackles superheroes and the power of representation on Wed, 2/24

Tuesday, February 23, 2021

Representation matters. For nearly a century, from Wonder Woman to Black Panther, superheroes have been reflecting the challenges of our times and showing us our potential. Their cultural relevance and influence is powerful.

On Wednesday, February 24th at 7pm, join Third Place Commons to explore the impact and significance of these potent images and stories in Comic Book Reality: Superheroes and the Power of Representation. Teens welcome!

Comic Book Historian Andrew Wahl
Presenter T. Andrew Wahl is a journalist who has worked as an editor and editorial cartoonist.

Wahl is a lifelong comic book aficionado, focusing on the Bronze Age (1975-85) of the American comic book.

Wahl studied comic books as a part of his MA in the humanities at Fort Hays State University.

He currently teaches journalism at Everett Community College.

As a comic book historian, Wahl has spent years charting the evolution of comic books and superheroes as reflections of their times, as well as their influence on culture.

And as comic book superheroes have diversified, he has also observed a noticeable evolution in their audiences.

As Wahl explained in the Bainbridge Island Review
“When I was a kid, if you went to a comic book convention … it was probably 95 percent white men in the room. If a woman walked in the room it was actually like a unicorn coming in, we’d all kind of stop and stare.
"And now if you go to Emerald City [Comic Con] in Seattle it’s about 50-50 in terms of the gender mix; people from all walks of life, all different kinds of sexual identity backgrounds, race and ethnicity backgrounds. It’s just a much more encompassing community now and all of that has been reflected in the stories themselves.”

From Captain America (born to fight Hitler and the Nazis) to Wonder Woman (created to foster feminism and peace) to the X-Men (who gained their powers in a metaphorical civil rights movement), Wahl explores the significance of characters who are considerably more than kids’ stuff.

So whether you’re a lifelong comics fan or have just a passing interest in the latest Marvel blockbuster, tune in Wednesday at 7pm to find out what you’ve been missing.

REGISTER HERE for Comic Book Reality: Superheroes and the Power of Representation.

This event is part of Third Place Commons’ TPC At Home programming, designed to keep community connected during these often isolating times. And it’s a program designed for both adults and teens, so bring your teens!

Third Place Commons, a community supported 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, has been building real community in the heart of Lake Forest Park for over 20 years. In addition to presenting its largest program, the Lake Forest Park Farmers Market, Third Place Commons now also fosters real community in digital space with TPC At Home programs.

On March 6th at 5pm, Third Place Commons will host its Finally 21 Online Party and Fundraiser to raise vital support for community programs and the LFP Farmers Market, and to sustain Third Place Commons through the Covid era. Get your Party Passes here.

Third Place Commons explores superheroes and the Power of Representation on Wed, Feb 24

Friday, February 5, 2021

Representation matters. When we see ourselves reflected in stories and media, we see our possibilities. From Wonder Woman to Black Panther, comics (and their current counterpart, superhero movies) have played no small role in creating powerful visions of our potential.

On Wednesday, February 24th at 7pm, Third Place Commons invites you to explore the impact and significance of these potent images and stories in “Comic Book Reality: Superheroes an the Power of Representation.”

Since their debut in the 1930s, comic books have been a regular part of our pop-culture landscape. While often dismissed as escapist entertainment, these pulp treasures also provide a fascinating lens through which to view our nation’s past, present, and potential future.

In this interactive presentation, journalist and educator T. Andrew Wahl explores how everything from social movements to business concerns to changing demographics have shaped the reality seen in the pages of comics. Drawing from comics including Black Panther, Wonder Woman, Captain America, and others, Wahl shows how four-color heroes aren’t merely confined to paper — they shape the world we live in.

This program is appropriate for adults and teens and is the latest in the Third Place Commons TPC At Home series of virtual events.
