Fireworks roundup - smoke in Woodway and a death in Redmond

Sunday, July 7, 2024

Quiet 4th of July for
Shoreline Fire
Harborview Medical Center treated approximately 50 patients to date for fireworks-related injuries.

However, Shoreline Fire says that they had no reported fireworks related injuries!

There was a lawn fire in Woodway which produced an impressive amount of smoke, but the residents had put out the fire before the department arrived and before it reached any structures.

The smoke stayed in the atmosphere for a very long time.

Charlie at Horizon View before the fireworks started

Story and photos by Gordon Snyder

During the afternoon before the firework explosions started, we headed for a Spectacular Independence Day Walk around Horizon View Park. Afternoon sun highlighted our lazy break on the grass. A few fireworks were popping in the distance, but not enough to bother Charlie. Yet...

Charlie has freaked out about fireworks since he moved in with us. For the 4th and New Years, we are always surrounded by blasting fireworks later in the evening. It sounds like a war zone. Charlie would hide in the basement bathroom. He felt terrible.

This year we tried a new approach to help reduce his Firewok's Fear.

Food not Fear for Charlie
After we finished BBQing some chicken. I chopped some BBQ thigh meat and put it into a bag for Fireworks Time in an hour or so.

My thought is: Charlie is a Chow Hound. Anything for Food. Food makes him focus on Food.

So maybe he won't fear the fireworks if there’s a tiny morsel of BBQ.

Slowly, as the fireworks began, we started a game BOOOM and a FOOD distraction…

After a big blast, I’d give him a tiny morsel. DIdn’t take long before Charlie began to forget the fireworks and was more interested in the treat. Soon he became more comfortable with the blasts because they were becoming a signal for some BBQ taste.

This next step blew me away. After a nearby loud one would blow up, we started playing by barking and chasing sorta like he does with a squirrel. He got excited when something blasted. He’d bark and scurry around a bit. Catch a piece of chicken and wait for the next explosion.

The evening was a beautiful success where we watched fireworks together (sorta) and he nibbled.

He never spent any time scared and hiding in the bathroom…

We all enjoyed this Independence Day. Hope yours was wonderful also.

Cheers,
Gordon Snyder

Thousands of spectators lined downtown streets Thursday for the annual Edmonds Chamber of Commerce Fourth of July parade — a small-town tradition that has been around since 1907.

Veterans proudly marched, horses deftly pranced and school musicians kept the beat, much to the delight of an enthusiastic crowd of onlookers.

Teresa Wippel, publisher of My Neighborhood New Network, was named as Grand Marshal

In 2009, Wippel founded My Edmonds News, which now part of the My Neighborhood News Network — a vital community news organization that also includes MLTnews and Lynnwood Today.

These three news organizations give businesses, organizations and residents the opportunity to communicate important news, events and updates, offering South County residents quality journalism and community stories.

UWMed: Harborview readies for annual wave of fireworks injuries

Tuesday, July 2, 2024

Dr. Morris says: Don't play with fireworks, don't hold them in your hand, and don't use them around children. Photo courtesy UW Med

Every year around the Fourth of July, Harborview Medical Center, the region’s only Level I trauma and burn center, treats about 55 patients for fireworks-related injuries. The hospital's Emergency Department will be staffed to care for the influx of injuries expected this week.

“We see a lot of fireworks-related injuries,” said Dr. Stephen Morris in emergency medicine at UW Medicine in Seattle. “The most devastating injuries that we see are those to the hands and eyes.”

“Fireworks and alcohol certainly don’t mix,” he added. “That’s a big portion of the injuries we see related to people who are intoxicated and just don’t have the wherewithal to use them properly.”

Morris encourages people to attend a public fireworks display run by professionals to celebrate Independence Day.

Protect your pet this Fourth of July holiday

Friday, June 28, 2024

After the 4th of July 2022, Zoe wandered for two
days but couldn't find her way back home.
It's no secret that more pets go missing around the Fourth of July than any other time of the year.

The bangs, booms, and pops of fireworks can be quite scary for our furry friends, and they scamper off in search of a good hiding place.

In 2022, a Ridgecrest dog named Zoe bolted when the fireworks started and spent the next two days wandering near 185th on both sides of the freeway. (See article)

Her owners searched extensively, following all the sightings and happily found her hiding in a back yard by North City Park.

To help your pet cope with the noise from fireworks, and reduce the chances that it runs away, Regional Animal Services of King County (RASKC) offers these tips.
  • Keep your pet secured indoors in the quietest room of your home while fireworks are going off. You can also use soothing music or television as a distraction. Some pets will stay calmer when placed in a secure crate in a darkened, quiet room.
  • If your pet is normally kept outside, bring them inside or put them in a well-ventilated garage or shed or in a basement during fireworks displays.
  • Make sure your pet is licensed and has an ID tag or microchip. Pets with ID have a much greater chance of being returned to their owners. If you need to license your pet and you live in the RASKC service area, you can license online.
  • Some pets may benefit from prescription or over-the-counter medications to help keep them calmer. Check with your regular veterinarian for more information about these options.
  • Don’t assume that your pet won’t react just because you haven’t had problems in the past. Sometimes, pets become sensitive to loud noises later in life.
  • If your pet is lost, check in person at all local shelters, and check back often. It may take some time before spooked pets are brought to shelters.
Help for Owners with Missing Pets from RASKC

Owners whose pets are missing can visit kingcounty.gov/LostAPet to fill out a missing pet report and find other tips and information that can help. There is also a "View Found Pets" button on that page where owners can see information about stray pets that have been picked up by animal control officers or community members.

For those who find stray pets wandering in their neighborhood, visit kingcounty.gov/FoundAPet to complete a found pet report and read tips on how to reunite a stray pet with their owner.

RASKC is in south King county, so the chance that your missing pet is there are fairly slim.

Both Shoreline and Lake Forest Park contract with PAWS in Lynnwood. They take in strays from Edmonds, Kenmore, Mountlake Terrace, Mukilteo, and Woodinville, as well.

They have a web page with photos of strays in custody, a place to file a missing animal report and other resources.

Fireworks at Log Boom Park in Kenmore

Fireworks were on a barge in Lake Washington

The City of Kenmore did themselves proud with a day long party and a beautiful fireworks display for the 4th of July.

The fireworks were delicate bursts of multi-colored light, looking like dandelions gone to seed.

Some were white, others in reds and yellows

Fireworks shows on the 3rd and 4th of July and then Tour de Terrace July 21-23

Tour de Terrace returns July 21-23, 2023

By Diane Hettrick

Some fireworks shows are open to the public, some are for private associations but they all can be seen and heard beyond their boundaries.

Mountlake Terrace will hold a public 3rd of July celebration in Ballinger Park 23000 Lakeview Dr., Mountlake Terrace. This year’s festivities will begin at 6pm and will include live music, a DJ and food trucks. A fireworks display over Lake Ballinger will be the highlight of the event when darkness falls at approximately 10pm. And it will be loud, so make sure your dogs are taken care of.

Then on the 4th of July:

On Lake Washington, Kenmore is holding a public show at Log Boom Park. (see previous article). Judging by reader reaction to the celebration marking the completion of the 81st Street Bridge, the sound of explosions will be heard throughout Lake Forest Park, Lake City and the east side of Shoreline. Be prepared! And you might be able to see the fireworks.

The Sheridan Beach Club is holding their annual party for their HOA members, including a fireworks show. The beach club is located lakeside at 165th. Eastside residents may be able to see the fireworks.

On Puget Sound the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring their kiddie and adult parades and fun runs. Instead of a fireworks show on the 4th, the Chamber is throwing in its lot with Mountlake Terrace for the 3rd of July fireworks.

Kingston 4th of July fireworks 10:15pm No one on the west side complains about noise from fireworks, even when Edmonds and Kingston had shows going on at the same time. This year it's just Kingston and they usually put on a good show. Find a vantage point and watch the show. They have fun events all day long. Here's some information - might be worth a ferry ride, especially if you walk on.

Harborview preps for dozens of fireworks injuries

Friday, June 30, 2023

Entrance to Harborview emergency burn center

In recent years, Harborview Medical Center’s Emergency Department has seen an average of 65 patients with fireworks-caused injuries around the Fourth of July.

“We normally see, unfortunately, two types of injury patterns, and large numbers of them: Injuries to the face and to the eyes and, sadly, injuries to people's hands as well,” said Dr. Steve Mitchell, the department's medical director. Fireworks injuries span all age groups, including young children.
“Oftentimes, the young children that we see are really innocent bystanders,” Mitchell said.
“They were participating in a party or a family gathering and a firework was set off by somebody else. And then it oftentimes will hit them in the face and affect their eyes or their face. It’s a significant problem.”

Mitchell says the best prevention against such injuries is to avoid lighting your own fireworks and instead celebrate the holiday by enjoying a public, professionally run fireworks show. People who do plan to use fireworks responsibly and legally should avoid mixing the activity with alcohol consumption, he urged.

“All of these injuries are very tragic. It really impacts that person directly as well as the people that they love, and their ability to participate in life and also really care for their family and themselves.”

Don't call 911 for fireworks - do take care of your animals - fireworks shows on the 3rd and 4th of July

Sunday, July 3, 2022

Fireworks Photo by Nitish Meena on Unsplash
By Diane Hettrick

Every police department in the area, from Everett to Seattle, is putting out polite or not so polite notices not to call 911 for fireworks. Police rarely catch those annoying people in the act.

All you are accomplishing is to block the dispatch lines.

If something is on fire - if someone is injured - call 911 immediately.

Otherwise keep your fingers off the phone.

If you must do something:
  • Report fireworks violations in King county by calling 206-848-0800 or online at https://bit.ly/3a8g5Sp
  • If they are your next door neighbors in Shoreline, take a video of them in action and send it to See Click Fix
  • Complain on your favorite social media site
Take care of your pets. Cats tend to hide under the bed, but dogs are prone to bolting out the door and running. Do whatever works for your dogs - thunder shirts, drugs, your soothing presence, a leash when they go outside - but make sure they can't get off your property. If they run you'll get them back but it might be 4-5 days.

The 3rd of July fireworks shows

Mountlake Terrace has a big fireworks display on Sunday the 3rd of July - Ballinger Park, 23000 Lakeview Drive. Food trucks, live music, and games at 6pm and fireworks starting around 10pm details here  Parking is an issue.

Edmonds is joining MLT because Civic Field is under construction.

Gas Works Park - the big Amazon Seafair Summer Fourth event is back on this year
Monday, July 4 from 3 - 11pm

T-Mobile Space Needle fireworks
They will be happening this year in person Info here

KING TV5 Macy's fireworks show
On TV starting at 8pm

If you can find a vantage point over Lake Washington you might be able to see Bellevue fireworks. Private parties often have fireworks at Sheridan Beach or the Civic Club. Kenmore doesn't seem to have a show this year, probably because Log Boom Park barefly reopened after major construction.

If you have a vantage point on Puget Sound, Kingston will be holding its annual fireworks show from an offshore barge. It won't be as spectacular this year because Edmonds won't have fireworks.

Harborview braces for annual wave of fireworks injuries

Friday, July 1, 2022

Harborview Medical Center trauma specialists recently treated a patient who lost a hand to a fireworks injury.

The hospital's Emergency Department is braced for the annual influx of those injuries, which number 40 to 50 per year.

“I remember many really tragic patients who lost body parts, hands, other things because of misadventures with fireworks,” said Dr. Michael Sayre, a professor of emergency medicine at the University of Washington School of Medicine.
“The best strategy is not to get injured in the first place. So don't play with fireworks. Don't hold them in your hands, don't use them around children, and then you won't get hurt.”

Fireworks in the hands of young children make for especially perilous situations, Sayre said. Teens and adults also can fail to anticipate what can go wrong and misjudge their own vulnerability.

No fireworks allowed in Woodway

Friday, June 24, 2022

Reminder - No Fireworks in Woodway

Celebrate Safely on the 4th of July

Fireworks are not allowed in Woodway. Per Woodway Municipal Code section 6.16.020:

“It is unlawful for any person to sell, possess, use, transfer, discharge, ignite or explode any fireworks within the Town.”

Because of our wooded setting, we face an enhanced level of risk associated with fireworks. As a result, we have a zero-tolerance policy and violators of the ban will be prosecuted.

Thank you for helping keep Woodway safe on Independence Day and every day.

Fireworks Illegal in Shoreline

Wednesday, June 22, 2022

As the 4th of July holiday approaches, it is important to remember that the sale, possession, use, or discharge of fireworks in the City of Shoreline is illegal.

Fireworks pose a fire hazard to property and present a safety risk to those who use them.

Fireworks can also cause significant distress to pets and individuals suffering from a variety of health conditions.

We ask everyone to be respectful of their neighbors and abide by the fireworks ban.

The sale, use, or discharge of fireworks in violation of Shoreline Municipal Code 9.15 is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail and/or a fine in an amount not more than $1,000. Each occurrence is considered a separate violation. A third violation in any three-month period is a gross misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and/or a fine in an amount not more than $5,000.

If you see or hear fireworks in your neighborhood, you can report offenders by calling the Police non-emergency line at 206-296-3311. If there is a fire or other emergency, please call 911. If you have an exact address of where individuals are launching fireworks, it makes it easier for police to deal with the issue.

It is important to remember that enforcing the no fireworks ban is difficult.

Police must see an individual in the act or have enough evidence connecting an individual to launched fireworks to write a citation.

Even with officers on duty, it is extremely difficult to determine where fireworks are coming from without a visual confirmation. That is why it is important for people calling to report fireworks to provide an address.

Local activities for the 4th of July weekend

Edmonds holds a 4th of July parade

Many local 4th of July events are coming back this year. Here's a list of nearby events.

An Edmonds Kind of 4th - 5k run, traditional parade, and fireworks show sponsored by the Edmonds Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber of Commerce always goes all out for the 4th of July with an emphasis on family activities, particularly the parade.

The fireworks show is held at the Civic Center, an open air field with concrete bleachers. The Chamber has been staging the 4th for decades.

Sometimes the show is off the field. I was there for the fireworks show 35 years ago. We got there early and were waiting for the show, when the people at the house right next to the stadium started shooting off fireworks. It only took them about 15 minutes to set the roof on fire. Lots of yelling. A few minutes later the fire department arrived to put out the fire.

And here's an option for you - our friends at MyEdmondsNews.com will be livestreaming the fireworks show. Here's the link: https://myedmondsnews.com/2021/07/join-us-for-the-edmonds-4th-of-july-fireworks-live-stream-show-sunday/

Kingston 4th of July - Kingston has been holding big 4th of July events for over a hundred years and their 4th of July brings out twice as many people as live in the small town. No wonder. They have a parade, live music, beer tent, pancake breakfast - and fireworks, but not necessarily in that order.

For years, readers have been telling me they have a secret vantage point where they can see the fireworks from both towns - but they won't tell me where!

It's pretty spectacular to have fireworks on both sides of the water.

Bellevue Family 4th - there are a lot of places in Lake Forest Park / Lake City where you can see the higher fireworks from Bellevue.

T-Town Family 4th Celebration (Tacoma) - you have to be pretty serious about fireworks to drive to Tacoma - but have at it!

Everett Thunder on the Bay - fireworks, live music, food, and family fun - and easier to get to than Tacoma.

Mountlake Terrace has cancelled both the 3rd of July fireworks show and the 2021 Tour de Terrace because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Kenmore holds a lot of special events during the summer but their 2021 fireworks show from Log Boom Park is cancelled. And fireworks are banned within city limits.
