A big break in the rain provided a beautiful view of the Cascades and those playing in Puget Sound. The minute the sun came out so did the joggers, walkers, and stair climbers at Richmond Beach Saltwater Park.

It was a dark and snowy night in Shoreline, but inside Grinders Hot Sands ..... it was warm and toasty listening to a selection of music by Al Rowe.

Dashboard Dog

Marc says:

"We often see dogs on the rear shelf of cars, but how often does one insist on riding on the dashboard?  If you look closely, you can see a 'non-skid' pad on the dashboard for the dogs' safety and convenience so he doesn't slip off.  This tells me he is more than just a casual component in this drivers everyday road trips."

Main Attraction at the Beach Sunday

        ...Solstice Low Tides  -3.7 ft

Those who watch the tides and the moon were treated to this year's best beach walking, a minus 3.7 feet on Sunday.

But don't worry if you missed it. There's still another chance on Monday, June 24 just about noon.  So rush on down to Richmond Beach Saltwater Park with your gear for exploring, photographing, or just plain being a kid and digging in the sand.

The following images are my take away for a somewhat grey, but mild day on the sand.

Neighborhood thrills and spills

Thursday, May 2, 2013

Saturday, April 27, 2013 -- Neighborhood thrills and spills were the order of business on this grey and blustery spring day.

One Shoreline neighborhood had an unexpected ringside seat to a group of skate boarders on what are called 'long boards' and not to be confused with the standard image of a typical skate board. With special wheels and under carriages, these teens put on an exhibition of nerve, balance and skill supported by long hours of practice.

Several parents traveled with the group to lend their support and supervision while 'locals boarders' volunteered this neighborhood "chill" hill (meaning challenging and great). I was told that all came from northwest locations to test their skills in competition with one another and were drawn to this Shoreline street because of its superior surface and slope.

My initial concern was for the safety of the participants as well as the private and public rights of the neighborhood residents. But after watching for more than an hour, it became clear that all were well mannered and several supervisors watched for neighborhood vehicles as well and a few commercial vehicles like the mail delivery. They were quick to stop the competition for such traffic.

I did see several bumps, bruises and scrapes on the contestants and one observer (boarder) get hit with a runaway board. But all wore helmets, gloves and knee protection at the very least. However it seems no one has yet developed protection for sliding on ones rear. One mother told me that the rear pockets of pants are the first things to go!

Marc Weinberg says,

"In spite of this weekends bluster, cool and rainy conditions, this daring, but 'unlucky duck' was ready to take a swim, if only his mate would have shown up. He waited for a hour marching up and down the pool side and then finally just took off without her."

Photo: Burlington Northern train and the USS Ronald Reagan race to the north along Richmond Beach

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

A Burlington Northern train catches up with the USS Ronald Reagan
as they both head north out of Richmond Beach

Marc Weinberg comments:
A friend called to tell me the USS Ronald Reagan was leaving Puget Sound this morning and I rushed down to the Richmond Beach shoreline to find a good viewing spot as she came along. I selected a vantage point at the Richmond Beach Kayu Kayu Ac Park which would be clear of trees.
I had taken a few practice shots when I heard a northbound train approaching. I knew instantly that my view of the ship would be blocked and I wondered if I could be lucky enough to capture both the train and the ship. I only had one chance and one click of the shutter and the ship would be gone. This photo (above) is the result.

According to the Kitsap Sun,

The USS Ronald Reagan departed Monday morning (from the Bremerton shipyards) for its San Diego home after 14 months of work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Intermediate Maintenance Facility.

The Reagan crew, shipyard workers and contractors completed what the Navy calls a Docked Planned Incremental Availability — $218 million in maintenance and upgraded systems, much of it performed in dry dock. Projects ranged from preserving the ship’s exterior and island, complete overhaul of its internal computer network, and work on the main engines and rudders,

The Sun reports that the future of the Reagan is not clear.

Reagan is headed back to Naval Base Coronado, but its future isn’t clear. It will rejoin the West Coast deployment cycle, which includes the Middle East and western Pacific Ocean. The ship isn’t scheduled to deploy for some time, said Cmdr. Kevin Stephens of Naval Air Forces Pacific, and budget problems jeopardize its time on the water.

Wind surfers and kite boarders revel in the wind

And the race is on!

Photos by Marc Weinberg

Friday's wind storm caught the attention of Windsurfers and Kite Boarders alike. Puget Sound churned like a salty milk shake, delighting the wind seeking crowd despite the dark sky and sea. As the late afternoon sun broke through over Richmond Beach Saltwater Park, the colors of the kites became even more brilliant against the background.
