SEATTLE — On Friday morning, March 3, 2023 around 6:15am, the Seattle Fire Department’s Fire Alarm Center received calls reporting thick black smoke and flames coming from a two-story vacant commercial building on the 14000 block of Lake City Way NE.

The first firefighters on scene confirmed the entire building was fully involved in the fire with high heat and flames extending through the roof. In response, the incident commander prohibited all firefighters from entering the building due to concerns of structural collapse.

Crews maintained a defensive position by pouring water on the fire from a safe distance away from the burning building. They prioritized protecting adjacent buildings from the fire as well as preventing falling debris from causing structural damage.

Within an hour of arriving on scene, the roof started to collapse followed by the eastern wall.

Too dangerous to enter, firefighters poured water from a safe distance.

Neighboring residents and businesses informed us that water runoff from fighting the fire began to overwhelm the storm drains and posed a flood risk. In response, we requested additional resources, including Seattle Public Utilities, to help mitigate the pooling water and divert further runoff away from the impacted buildings.

Firefighters determined the fire was fully extinguished at 7:34pm.

The building, which was vacant, was already slated for demolition prior to the fire. Seattle Fire worked with the property owner to expedite an excavator to demolish the building because the remaining walls were at risk of collapsing onto the streets and walkways.

By 9pm an excavator arrived on scene to demolish the building.

The incident is under investigation, and no injuries were reported.

Sunday, July 21, 2019

Lake City will hold its annual summer festival and parades (three of them!) on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Lake City has been holding this summer event since 1950, as part of the SeaFair celebration.

There are three parades, a salmon BBQ, beer gardens, car show, drone racing, dancers, artists, crafters, family fun zone, and a free movie about Chief Seattle's daughter!

When twilight arrives, the parades down Lake City Way begin. There’s the Rotary of Seattle NE kid’s parade at 6pm; the Original Dog Parade at 6:30pm; and The Seafair Grand Parade at 7pm, featuring all you favorites - Drill Teams, Marching Bands, Clowns, Pirates, and more.

And with the expanded parade route, there will be more majestic floats from all over the PNW!

Bring your chairs and enjoy the show.

Lake City shares a border with Shoreline and Lake Forest Park at NE 145th. The heart of Lake City and where most of the events take place is around NE 125th. Be sure to check the map so you don't miss anything!

Parking is a challenge, so they run a shuttle service in to the events.

Lots of information on their website.

Tragedy in Lake City

Thursday, March 28, 2019

All the incidents took place on Sand Point Way
between NE 123rd and NE 125th

Two people are dead and two others are wounded after a man went on a rampage in the Lake City - Sand Point area Wednesday afternoon around 4pm.

He started by attempting to carjack a vehicle on Sand Point Way and Bartlett Street just a couple of blocks from where Sand Point Way curves into NE 125th and heads west to Lake City Way. He shot the female driver, who is currently in Harborview and expected to recover.

Then he walked into the street and fired through the front window of a Metro bus, hitting the driver in the torso. Amazingly, the driver, Eric Stark, was able to back the bus around to head north away from the gunman, then he radioed for help. Stark is in the hospital.

He approached another passenger vehicle and shot the driver, killing him. He took that car and as police arrived on the scene, he sped down Sand Point Way, hitting another vehicle head on and killing the driver.

The gunman was wounded in the collision but was standing by the vehicle as police approached, then were able to take him into custody. He is currently in the hospital.

Area residents are reflecting on how close they came to the scene and how it could easily have been them. "I was just a few blocks away when it happened," one said.

The incident created a massive traffic back up. "I've never seen so many police cars," one woman said. Many locals were in the back up, as they were heading home to Lake Forest Park and Kenmore.

The gunman and the two victims are all expected to recover.
