Another Little Free Library

Saturday, July 7, 2018

Little Free Library
Seattle Poppy found another Little Free Library on 12th Place NE.

I honestly thought these were a fad that would die out, but instead they seem to be increasing in numbers.

I don't publish the exact address, because they are really intended for the immediate neighborhood.

I'm also a little paranoid because there was a woman last year who was making the rounds of the LFLs and taking all of the books.

When she was challenged, she said - It says they're free!

Neighbors speculated she was taking them to sell them - but anyone who has ever worked a book sale or sold personal books knows that you won't get rich that way.

In the meantime we have all these charming, small book sharing spots.

Good Neighbor Giveaway June 2 at Shoreline United Methodist Church

Good Neighbor Giveaway - just for fun
at Shoreline United Methodist Church
It is said that, “There is no free lunch.” That may be, but some other things are free. Some are valuable as are hugs and smiles. Some are offered to open up something more valuable like friendship or the joy of sharing with neighbors.

Saturday, June 2, 2018 a Good Neighbor Giveaway starts at 9am and continues until 2pm

Its purpose is fun. That’s it, fun. Come one and all and take anything you want up to 10 items. If you choose a coffee mug, it costs a ticket, if your choice is 4 dining room chairs, they cost four of the tickets you are handed when you arrive.

Your new possessions don’t fit? Shoreline United Methodist Church [SUMC] at 14511 25th Ave NE has a “Get and Hold Corral” where your item[s] will be kept open until 1pm for you to come and retrieve.

Say, you don’t want anything? Great! Bring what you want to give away between Wednesday, May 31st and Friday, June 1st, whenever appointment you have. Don’t have an appointment? Call SUMC at 206-363-3040 to set one.

Good Neighbor Giveaway allows SUMC to engage in a neighborhood activity that reveals God’s grace, lets us recycle possessions, rejoices in sharing, builds community and acknowledges the contentment of less.

Contact: Shoreline United Methodist Church 14511 25th Ave NE, Shoreline 98155 206-363-3040.

Free store to be held on Nov 17

Monday, November 12, 2012

The Free Store will be held, again at the Shoreline Library, NE 175th and 5th NE, on November 17th, from 1:30pm to 3pm.

From the organizer:

WHAT:  "Free" store.  It is not mandatory to bring anything, although the more items that are brought in, the more there will be for everyone to find something they would like. Items are simply put on the tables or against the walls and it's a free-for-all.  Kind expressions of giving over something you already took might be greatly appreciated by someone else.  This is also about considering those less fortunate.  Everybody who brings something is encouraged to participate and take what you want, and then if your items have not been picked up by the time you'd like to leave, I'm requesting you take them as you leave.  If you want to bring one or two small items and leave, that is okay; but if too many people do this, it could get problematic.

Library patrons who knew nothing about this will be welcome to participate--and take what they need/want.

STIPULATIONS:

Please arrive between 1:30 and 2pm with your items.  That way everyone's items should be on the tables by 2 o'clock and everyone has the next hour to look at everything and take what they need/want.  I found last time that (a few people) bringing bagfuls of items late and then promptly leaving does not serve the intent of the Free Store.

To re-iterate, you do not have to bring anything.  If you're on hard times--and many people are, you can simply take whatever items you need/want.

WHAT TO BRING: books (no back issues of magazines, please), clothes, shoes, purses, jewelry, G-rated packaged hygiene items, trinkets, material, material scraps and sewing notions, toys, VHS, DVDs, CDs, linens, tools, dishes, kitchen items, misc. school/office/art/crafting supplies, etc.  Do not bring small appliances unless they work.  It is not the intent of the Free Store for people to unload their junk.  Please do not bring big appliances, computers and related items, or furniture.

A note about books:  Feel free to bring and/or take as many books as you like.  Keep in mind that books could be brought back to the Free Store to keep circulating.  Actually this would apply to EVERYTHING, but I think especially with books.  Stay tuned for another Free Store in December, and yes, I plan to continue the NKC Free Store in 2013.

I will bring whatever bags and boxes I can for people to put their items in, but please consider bringing your own in case there are not enough to accommodate everyone.

Note:  This organizer is taking responsibility for any leftover items, but I only have a small car, so please be considerate of my space limitations.  Unfortunately, there is NO STORAGE SPACE FOR LEFTOVERS AT THE LIBRARY, so please take back your items that are not picked up by anyone.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation and participation!
Note: This event is not sponsored by the Shoreline Library or Freecycle.

On Tuesday, November 13, Meridian Park Neighborhood Association will host its third Community Barter event on the third floor of City Hall from 6pm-8pm.

This all-age-welcome social event promotes neighborly chatting and trading of goods for fun. No money will be exchanged at the event except the request of a donation ($1 suggested) to enter.

Beginner barterers are welcome, and a tutorial will be provided. The event will feature a potluck dinner and participants are asked to bring a dish to share. For environmental friendliness, participants are also asked to bring their own plates, cups and eating utensils.

To complement the merry market atmosphere, live musicians will perform. French Canadian dance band, Metis, trio WhistlePig, and accordionist Adrian Bourne are all expected. Introverts and extroverts alike are invited to join in the fun; come to watch the barter and visit with neighbors, and/or come ready trade your goods for what else looks great on the tables.

Popular items to trade include: baked goods, craft items, garden produce, services (such as weeding, babysitting, fridge cleaning, dog walking, chicken care, housecleaning, etc.), used items, books, toys, or anything you would like to trade. Teen babysitters from Meridian Park neighborhood will be volunteering to help supervise a kids' Lego and craft area (though parents are still responsible for kids during the event).

For more information, contact Naomi, 206-853-1149. Volunteers are still needed, including people to help move tables before and after the barter and a photographer to document the event.

City Hall barter party

Meridian Park Neighborhood Association invites all of Shoreline to attend their third barter.  The barters have been growing in popularity and diversity, bringing in young and old to trade homemade and homegrown as well as a variety of used items.

The next barter date has been confirmed for Tuesday, November 13th from 6-8pm at City Hall.

The event will include live music, set-up and preview of items, an hour-long barter, a potluck (participants must bring their own plates and silverware), a supervised kid area, a barter tutor and just a fun Fall community event for anyone.

MPNA suggests a $1 per person donation to help cover the costs of putting on the event, which will include free coffee. Meridian Park Neighbors are encouraged to help by setting up or taking down tables immediately before and after the event, providing live music, helping participants to check-in or to merely walk around and support new barterers who might need help.

Contact Naomi if you have questions or ideas or if would like to help out in any way.

Meridian Park Barter Party Tuesday, August 21

Saturday, August 4, 2012

Meridian Park Neighborhood Association and Cascade K-8 Community School are co-hosting a barter at City Hall on Tuesday, August 21st from 6-8pm.  Community members of all ages are invited to gather to share potluck food and to trade items and services for fun.

Zeth Peterka is one of the musicians
who will play during the Party
To augment the festive market atmosphere, the barter will feature several local musicians.  Zeth Peterka, who has recently been seen and heard at Shoreline Farmer's Market, will be one of the performers, providing Old Time and Bluegrass music.  Local musician and Music Together Instructor, Elena DeLisle, has assembled a Cajun Music trio including herself, husband Steve Perry, (both Cascade K-8 parents) and neighbor Claudia Anastasio, especially for this event.  Adrian Bourne, accordionist, is also slated to play at the barter.

All musicians will be providing entertainment for the event at no cost to the hosts.  Barter participants are encouraged to show appreciation for the entertainment by offering bartered items in exchange for music if they like.

A barter is a gathering where neighbors and friends come together to trade goods and services for fun. At the last barter, in March, people brought baked goods, fresh eggs, granola, yogurt, hard cider, laundry detergent, kids' toys, records, preserves, tie-dyed shirts, dried herbs, metal garden art, canned chicken and much, much more. A greater amount of fresh Summer produce, backyard tree fruit and Fall Crop starts are predicted for this barter.

Participants are asked to bring a food item to share as well as their own plates, forks and cups.

The first half of the barter will be for setting up and previewing items for trade while enjoying the potluck food. The bartering will commence at 7pm. The only rule is that no money may be exchanged. For more information or to volunteer, contact Naomi at 206-853-1149.
