Shoreline CERT knows how to shut off the water

Tuesday, January 23, 2024

Shoreline Emergency Manager Ryan Zavala
demonstrates how to shut off water at the meter.
At the regular monthly meeting of the Shoreline Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), we reviewed how to shut off utilities.

While we normally train for a big disaster, sometimes the disaster is smaller, like a water leak inside your home. We train for those disasters, too.

During the recent cold snap many people found themselves with frozen pipes, or even worse, burst pipes.  A broken water pipe isn't just the inconvenience of no water, but the more expensive problem of water damage and plumbing repair.

While the CERT training doesn't involve fixing a broken pipe, it will teach you how to turn off the water to prevent further damage.

"Knowing how to shut off utilities is part of CERT basic training," said Shoreline Emergency Management Coordinator Ryan Zavala.
"The CERT program is designed to help our community respond to all disasters."

The City of Shoreline has scheduled two CERT classes for later this year.  Contact the Shoreline Office of Emergency Management for information.

NEMCo and the City of Woodinville partner to deliver CERT training

Woodinville CERT class

By Kevin Lowery – NEMCo Emergency Manager

For the past seven weeks, a group of students have been spending their Thursday evenings taking the FEMA based CERT Basic course at Fire Station 31 in Woodinville.

While this group of students included residents from throughout the Northshore Region (including cities from Shoreline to Woodinville), it mostly consisted of Woodinville residents learning important disaster preparedness and response information from CERT instructors sponsored by the Northshore Emergency Management Coalition (NEMCo).

The course concluded this past Saturday when the class completed its functional exercise at Fire Station 51 in Kenmore.

This exercise utilized the Shoreline Fire Department’s training facility to test the new CERT members' ability to perform building searches, medical triage and basic first aid, use lifting and cribbing to removed injured/trapped persons, as well as the use of fire extinguishers to put out small fires that may be encountered after a disaster event.

The completion of this course not only marks the third successful course hosted by NEMCo this year, but it also demonstrates the ideals of neighbors helping neighbors and interagency cooperation.

It successfully brought neighbors from throughout the region together for a common emergency preparedness goal and utilized resources from the two major regional fire departments in the area, East Side Fire Department and Shoreline Fire Department.

Building this kind of interagency cooperation prior to a disaster is vital to having an efficient emergency management system when an event occurs. NEMCo and the City of Woodinville are very proud of these graduates and they the dedication to emergency preparedness their class represents.

Free Community Emergency Response Team training opportunity

Thursday, February 18, 2021

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is an organization of volunteer emergency workers who have received specific training in basic disaster-response skills, with the intent of supplementing existing emergency responders in the event of a major disaster; or, to utilize their skills to assist family members and neighbors.

Following a major disaster, local fire, police, city, and other first responders may not be able to meet the demand for their services. Residents of our community, and visitors, may need to rely on each other for help meeting their immediate life-sustaining needs.

The Northshore Emergency Management Coalition (NEMCo) CERT program will educate participants about local hazards and basic disaster preparedness, and provide hands-on training that includes fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations.

After completing the CERT academy, volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in additional drills and exercises to keep their skills sharp and continue to enhance their knowledge and abilities.

What to expect at the hybrid CERT class

Usually, CERT is taught in person for three-hour sessions spread out over eight weeks, ending with a large, in-person disaster simulation.

With current COVID restrictions, training has been adapted to a hybrid online/in-person approach: a two-hour online course for eight weeks, plus a single one-day in-person three-hour hands-on skill session.

Graduates of the class will have the opportunity to participate in a disaster simulation at a later date. The hands-on portion of the class is not a requirement of completion, but it does enhance the training dramatically.

Classes begin online Monday, March 8, 2021 from 6:30 – 8:30pm, and will continue each Monday for eight weeks. The in-person hands-on training day is on Saturday, April 24, from 9:00am to noon, at Northshore Fire Station 51 in Kenmore.

There is no fee for this class; however, it will fill up quickly so please register soon.

For registration and other information, check out the CERT website.

If you have questions or would like more information, please contact NEMCo Emergency Manager Carl Lunak, at 425-354-1744, or by email. The registration form is available here.

10 new graduates from Shoreline Community Emergency Response Team (CERT)

Friday, May 3, 2019

CERT trainees learn how to use fire extinguishers

The Shoreline Office of Emergency Management is excited to announce the graduation of 10 new Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members.

These 10 community members participated in over 24 hours of training, which culminated in putting their skills to the test in a final simulated disaster exercise held at the Shoreline Fire Department Training and Support Facility on April 28, 2019.

CERT trainees help a 'victim' out of a dangerous situation

The full scale exercise included participation by the Shoreline Fire Department and included volunteers from the Shoreline Boy Scouts, previous CERT graduates and the non-profit group, Moulage Mayhem out of Snohomish County who acted as victims of a large earthquake for the CERT team to rescue and provide first aid.

The Shoreline CERT training was led by Shoreline Emergency Manager Jason McMillan and longtime CERT member Pat Ducey who ensured the course covered the required material, while maintaining a positive attitude and making it engaging and fun for all participants.

Trainers check the list of things graduates should demonstrate

There are no special skills or previous experience required to take the CERT training and all residents are encouraged to participate in the program. The course provides participants basic level training in fire and utilities control, disaster first aid, search and rescue and disaster psychology.

Using skills learned in the classroom and during exercises, participants are better prepared to provide assistance to their family, neighborhood, community, and workplace following a disaster.

Volunteer victims are triaged and treated away from the danger

Additionally, CERT program graduates become eligible to be deployed in the community to assist with large scale emergency and disaster incidents. They may also assist the Shoreline Office of Emergency Management with public education and outreach events.

There is no cost for CERT training and all materials are provided. For more information on the CERT program and to find out about upcoming training opportunities, email or call the Shoreline Office of Emergency Management at 206-801-2700.
