Play at local church immerses viewer in immigration detention center courtroom October 17, 2026

Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Church (SUUC) and Communities Rising are sponsoring the play The Detention Lottery on October 17, 2026 at 6:30pm, 14724 1st Ave NE, Shoreline, WA 98155 Free

SUUC doors open at 6. The play lasts about an hour and there will be time for questions with practicing immigration lawyers. 

The Detention Lottery is a play that immerses the viewer in an immigration detention center courtroom, as several audience members are detained upon entry, assigned identities as immigrants, and defend themselves against deportation as best they can in court, without preparation. 

The play opens up the covert, capricious, and byzantine immigration enforcement system to public scrutiny. Written by Margaret O'Donnell and directed by Amy Youngblood.

This event benefits the FIRE Campaign: Fueling Immigrant and Refugee Empowerment, an emergency fundraising campaign to meet the critical needs of our immigrant neighbors by collectively fueling the work of these eight frontline immigrant-serving organizations across Washington state: AIDNW, Colectiva Legal del Pueblo, Jewish Coalition for Immigrant Justice NW, Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center, Manzanita House, Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, Riverton Park United Methodist Church, and Unidos Nueva Alianza.
