King County Search & Rescue is looking for a missing Alzheimer's patient.

69-year-old Joan Harrison was last seen about noon today near Shoreview Park in Shoreline.

She is 5’8, with a slight build. Long gray hair in a ponytail.

She was wearing: Dark pants (jeans or leggings), navy blue parka, navy blue fleece knit beanie.

Last seen: walking towards Shoreview Park (Shoreline) on October 30, 2025 at 10am

New Memorandum of Reaffirmation expands cross-border Commitment to Advance Innovation, Affordability, Sustainability, and Connectivity

SEATTLE – As part of the Cascadia Innovation Corridor conference, leaders from the Province of British Columbia, the State of Washington, and the State of Oregon today signed a Memorandum of Reaffirmation renewing their cross-border partnership designed to strengthen collaboration in innovation, housing affordability, sustainability, connectivity including high speed rail, and economic development across the Pacific Northwest.

The new agreement reaffirms and builds upon prior Memoranda of Understanding between British Columbia and Washington signed in 2016 and 2018, while formally extending the partnership to include Oregon for the first time.

“Ten years ago, we set out to do something ambitious — to create a cross-border partnership that united business and government, universities and nonprofits, around a shared vision of innovation, sustainability, and prosperity.

"A decade later, the Cascadia Innovation Corridor has not only endured but grown stronger," said former Governor Chris Gregoire, Chair of the Cascadia Innovation Corridor and CEO of Challenge Seattle.

"Even when forces threaten to divide our long-standing relationship, Cascadia reminds us that our own cooperation and trust can endure across borders. We’ve proven that working together across regions is not only possible — it’s powerful.”

Under the Memorandum, the three jurisdictions pledge to build on the 2016 and 2018 agreements between British Columbia and Washington, expanding cooperation across all three governments to advance shared priorities in innovation, housing affordability, environmental stewardship, and transportation connectivity.

The renewed partnership focuses on strengthening collaboration in fields such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and advanced computing — enhancing Cascadia’s global competitiveness.

“For decades, British Columbia, Washington and Oregon have built deep ties that are stronger than recent efforts to divide us,” said British Columbia Premier David Eby.

“We know that British Columbia is stronger when we work together with our neighbors in the U.S. We are proud to reaffirm our commitment to work with the governors of Oregon and Washington and look forward to growing together as a global hub of innovation and economic opportunity.”

“This partnership reflects the shared values of our region — practical problem-solving and a commitment to progress,” said Washington Governor Bob Ferguson. “By addressing housing affordability, investing in clean energy, and creating the conditions for long-term economic growth, Cascadia will remain one of the most competitive and livable regions in the world.”

May 18, 1980 - A day that lives in the Pacific Northwest Infamy

It was 45 years ago that Mount St. Helens exploded in a spectacular and devastating eruption.

In less than two minutes, the mountain’s north face collapsed — triggering the largest landslide ever recorded and sending ash across the continent.

Ash spread across the state to the east, blackening the skies in the Yakima area and spreading as far as Spokane and some parts of Idaho, and Portland, then continuing east.

The ash cloud eventually reached the northeastern United States.

It triggered the biggest landslide in Earth's recorded history. 200 square miles of forest were flattened.

Mount St. Helens eruption

Fifty-seven people died, making it the deadliest and most destructive volcanic eruption in US history. The blast covered 230 square miles.

The eruption also triggered debris flows and avalanches, mud and water, and thousands of tree trunks that were prized by loggers and builders splashing down the Toutle River system and other waterways.

The film “The Fire Below Us - Remembering Mount St. Helens” will be shown Saturday evening, November 1, 2025 telling the preliminary reports of possible eruption and earthquakes, and showing footage of the eruption.

A 20-year-old professional cinematographer, just getting started in his career, was hired to go up the mountain with his crew to film the destruction and aftermath, when suddenly the mountain erupted for the second time, trapping them, loggers, and some sightseers.

Michael Lienau, who will be in person at the showing, tells the story of their time on the mountain with stunning photography, some re-created scenes with professional actors.

It is narrated by Grant Goodeve, formerly of the Northwest’s KING TV and then appearing in Northern Exposure, Eight is Enough, and many more television shows.

“I’m so grateful to share my story for the very first time in the Shoreline area about the amazing life lessons about Mount St. Helens and what I learned at the mountain, which happened 45-plus years ago,” stated Michael Lienau, producer/director and cinematographer.

The film and Michael are hosted by the Men’s Fellowship at Berean Bible Church at the corner of N 185th and 1st Ave NE with doors opening at 5:00pm and the film at 6:00pm.

Use the west entrance parking lot and entrance to the Gym on the left of the building.

Following the film, Michael will do a Q&A session, adjourning around 8:00pm.

ADMISSION IS FREE with lots of free popcorn, too.

Voters slow to return ballots

Ballots are due by next Tuesday, November 4, 2025 and should be delivered to a King County drop box.

King County voters have been slow so far to return ballots for the 2025 general election compared to four years ago.

Ballot return statistics from the Secretary of State shows 23.4% of Boomers (65+) have returned ballots so far, while only 3.3% of Zoomers (18-24) have as of one week before the election

A week before the election, less than 11% of voters in King County had returned their ballots according to the Secretary of State. By one week before the election in 2021, 11.32% of voters had returned their ballots. (Correction: an earlier version of this article incorrectly reported the 2021 ballot return rate.)

Consistent with past elections, older voters are returning ballots at higher rates than younger generations. While 23.4% of Boomers (65+) have returned ballots so far, only 3.3% of Zoomers (18-24) have so far.

Return to a drop box, don’t mail your ballot. Here’s why:

Washington law requires ballots to be either postmarked by Election Day (Nov 4) or returned to a drop box by 8:00pm on Election Day.

However, the United States Postal Service (USPS) no longer guarantees same-day postmarking of ballots and Washington’s Secretary of State's office and County Auditors told voters to mail their ballots at least one week early because the post office might not be able to postmark ballots on time.

That means, if a voter wants to have their vote counted, they should deliver their ballot to a drop box.

It’s That Time Again for Games and Treats at Berean Bible Church on Halloween

For the 4th year, Trunk or Treat will be held on Friday night for Shoreline families at Berean Bible Church. All are welcome at this free event.

Over 200 kids will be playing games such as balloon pop, the claw, corn hole, shooting hoops, and more.

And it wouldn’t be complete without lots of treats in the trunks of cars just ready for the Halloween tradition of candy for all the kids.

Shoreline Police will join in with treats from their police car, too.

Friday, October 31, 6:00pm to 8:00pm.

Berean Bible Church is located at 2345 North 185th Street, at the corner of 5th Avenue and N. 185th. The event takes place on the large, west parking lot. Easy to find and plenty of parking.

Look what’s new at Horizon View Park

A new public art piece has been installed at the south end of the playfield. Visitors can sit and relax on Nature’s Repose. The sculpture includes a two-sided concrete bench in vibrant color, embellished with glass mosaics and bookended with a metal fern and bleeding hearts.

Look carefully and you will also see a swallowtail butterfly and a bee.

Melissa Cole, the commissioned artist, was inspired by the Horizon View habitat. She came to the park and saw native flora and fauna that inspired the artwork.

Cole is also committed to involving the community in public art.

The base of the installation and the hearts around the back of the bench were created over two days at Third Place Commons.

Residents of all ages used recycled glass chips to make mosaics of salmon, mushroom, sea stars and more. These pieces were then installed by the artist.

The Secret Gardens of Lake Forest Park Garden Tour and Plant sale is a 21-year institution on Lake Forest Park. Each year garden sleuths find new and redesigned garden. Owners graciously open their gardens for the one-day tour.

The revenue from ticket sales does two things: first it supports the local non-profit presenting organizations and second, half of the revenue is set aside for public art. The tour has raised over $150,000 over its history and all of it has been reinvested in art and community programs for the City of Lake Forest Park.

The next LFP Garden Tour will be Saturday, June 21, 2026.

Shoreline will send prisoners to the new Lynnwood Jail

Shoreline police will be able to send prisoners to the new Lynnwood Jail. Currently, most are imprisoned at the notorious SCORE jail in South King County.

When someone arrested by Shoreline police is waiting for their initial court appearance or is serving short-term misdemeanor sentences, they are usually sent to the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) Jail in Des Moines.

According to recent reporting by PubliCola, eleven people have died in custody at SCORE jail in the past two years, a rate significantly higher than the national average.

At the Monday, October 27, 2025 meeting, the Shoreline city council approved a contract with the city of Lynnwood for jail services. Shoreline police will be able to send inmates to the Lynnwood jail in addition to the SCORE jail.

A round trip to the SCORE jail is nearly 60 miles from Shoreline and takes well over an hour by car. It often takes four hours for the police to drive down and back to SCORE to complete a jail booking.

Located a short distance from the Lynnwood Transit Center, the new jail is part of the Lynnwood Community Justice Center Project, which also includes the police department, court, and a mental health facility.

Shoreline’s jail costs have skyrocketed as the number of individuals jailed and the length of time they are being incarcerated has increased since historic lows in 2021.

The city says the number of “Daily Jail Beds Used” has more than tripled from 2,132 in 2021 to 6,575 in 2024.

Jail spending has increased from $586,363 in 2021 to $1.35 million in 2024. Shoreline’s 2025-2026 jail budget is about $2.7 million.

According to reporting by the Everett Herald, the Lynnwood jail has faced protests and cost overruns.

Construction for the jail began in 2021 and it opened in 2024. Originally planned to hold 120 prisoners, the jail was scaled back to a capacity of 84 after an inmate died by suicide after her arrest for suspicion of DUI. An independent investigation found officers had left her alone in violation of Lynnwood police policies.

Amidst protests, the city scaled back the size of the jail and added a mental health wing, which is physically ready but vacant because the city has struggled to find an operator and funding. The city recently found an operator and expects to begin operation in early 2026.

Decades ago, the city of Shoreline sent prisoners exclusively to the King County Jail, but that facility began to run out of space in 2002. Since then, the city has paid to send prisoners to jails in other municipalities such as Yakima and Issaquah.

A 2008 plan to build a new jail at the Aldercrest site in the Ballinger neighborhood failed after opposition from residents.

In 2014, the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) jail in South King County became Shoreline’s primary jail and booking facility. Shoreline currently sends 98% of its prisoners to SCORE.

Last Thursday night, October 23, 2025 the Shorewood Stormrays finished up the regular season schedule at Lynnwood Royals, winning an utter demolition, 14-0.

The Stormrays ended the season 5-4-3, third in the WesCo 3A South league, with an RPI of 0.5657, and ranked #8.

Following the conclusion of the regular season, the District 1 3A playoff brackets have been set, against teams from WesCo 3A North and the Northwest 3A Conference.

The top four seeds receive a bye, while the remaining eight seeds face off in a play-in round to advance.

Shorewood is seeded #6, and will play #11 Mountlake Terrace on Thursday October 30, for the right to meet #3 Monroe in the quarter-final on Saturday November 1.

League runner-up Shorecrest is seeded #2, and will play either #10 Stanwood or #7 Oak Harbor in another quarter-final.

The other top seeds are #1 Snohomish and #4 Edmonds-Woodway. The play-in and quarter-final rounds will be hosted by the higher seed at their home stadium, while the semi-finals and finals will be held at Shoreline Stadium, with both finalists qualifying for State.

The losing quarter-finalists and semi-finalists will enter a lucky loser’s bracket, where two teams will emerge in 3rd and 4th place, and both will qualify for State. There will be updates on the progress of Shoreline’s Finest!

LFP Neighborhood meeting November 6, 2025 regarding Ballinger Way NE Roundabout Project

On September 11, 2025 the Lake Forest Park City Council approved Resolution 25-2028, allowing the City to move forward with a contract for the SR 104 and 40th Place NE Roundabout project.

The City is hosting a neighborhood community meeting on November 6, 2025, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

The primary purpose of the meeting is to present and discuss the overall roundabout project, receive community feedback, and present retaining wall details associated with the project.

Letter to the Editor: LFP’s Prop 1 - Some Facts and Where to Find Them

To the Editor:

Online discussions about Lake Forest Park’s Proposition 1 have been laden with accusations, misinformation, and sidebar distractions. Out of frustration I created a list of facts and I want to share them. You can read about Prop 1 here which includes a link to FAQ

1. Passage of Prop 1 would not hike property taxes by 40% next year, as has been stated, but would increase gradually over a 6-year period, at which point the levy would end. Increases are strictly adjusted for inflation with a cap of 5% per year.

2. Prop 1 funds would be used for only public safety services, even though stored in the general fund; this would be written in law and would be tracked to provide transparency. And by state law, these funds cannot replace existing public safety spending.

3. “Public safety” is not only about sustaining our police department, but also about 911, emergency management and jail services, prosecution and public defense costs, crisis intervention and mental health programs.

4. Without such levies, WA cities can raise only 1% more in tax revenue each year, which doesn't come close to keeping up with inflation.

Does LFP need the money Prop 1 would bring in? The city has recently had to make cuts and dip into its reserves to cover expenses. Continuing to spend down the city’s reserves to patch the budget isn't a good practice for a municipality. Sooner rather than later the city would have to pay the piper. And in the event of a catastrophe, we are much less likely now to receive timely or adequate federal aid.

Let’s keep our community going strong and do what's sensible to meet our expenses. Vote Yes on Prop 1.

Woman dies in Shoreline domestic violence assault

Monday morning October 27, 2025, just after 1:30am, the KCSO Communications Center received several 911 calls regarding the sounds of gunfire in the 20100 block of Whitman Ave N in Shoreline.

Shoreline Police (KCSO deputies) responded to find a single injured victim in the street.

The scene was secured while medical intervention was provided by deputies and Shoreline firefighters / medics.

Unfortunately, the person died at the scene.

Officers from Edmonds PD helped secure the scene while other KCSO assets were deployed.

Detectives from the KCSO Major Crimes Unit were on-scene and in charge of the investigation. Case #: C25032447

Eleven hours later, on October 27, about 12:30pm in the afternoon, the King County Sheriff’s Office arrested a 43-year-old man for domestic violence homicide.

He had his first appearance hearing on Tuesday October 28, at 2pm in King County Jail Courtroom No. 1.

No previous cases involving the defendant have been referred to the King County prosecuting attorney's office for charges.

The victim's name has not yet been released.

EDMONDS, WA - Fly and float into the spooky season with a Samhain (Irish Halloween) experience at the Carroll-Henderson School.

Irish fairies ages 3-5 will twirl, tip toe and levitate across the floor in this free Fairy Feet Irish dance class in celebration of the ancient Irish holiday, Samhain.

Wear a dance-able fairy costume, and tip toe into the spook-io!

Fairy Feet dancers will explore through creative fairy movement the basics of dancing and foundational Irish dance movements and language.

Perfect for dance curious kids who love to float around and be magical this Halloween!

Halloween has its roots in the Irish festival, Samhain.

This harvest holiday marks the midway point between the autumnal equinox and winter solstice.

In mythology, Samhan is a spiritual time when the Otheworld became visible to mankind and spiritual forces such as fairies became loose in the human world.

Current costume traditions and trick-or-treating can draw their roots back to this holiday.

Safe Streets and Roads for All Safety Action Plan: Take the City of Shoreline survey

In recent years, Washington State has seen an increase in crashes resulting in serious injuries and fatalities.

To help make our streets safer, the City of Shoreline is creating a new Transportation Safety Action Plan.

The Plan aligns with the national Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) program and supports Shoreline’s strategic plan to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers. The goal is to improve what we already do in our Annual Traffic Report.

Share Your Thoughts

Your feedback is important. It helps build a successful Plan that reflects the community’s values and supports a culture of safety. Tell us how we should prioritize traffic safety projects considering our limited City funds and potential grant opportunities.

Come celebrate Dia de los Muertos with us at Evergreen Washelli Funeral Home & Cemetery!

Join us for an evening of Mariachi, dancing, delicious food, face painting & crafts for the kids, merchants and more!

Updates on the Shoreline Teen Center activities, events, and hours can be found at shorelinewa.gov/teens under the Teen Program Updates drop-down menu.

The Shoreline Teen Center is a free teen center for youth aged Middle School to 18 years old. The Center provides hot food as well as many activities.

They have basketball, pool, ping pong, foosball, video games, and art daily. Doors open at 2:30pm Monday - Friday. All calendar activities begin at about 3:30pm and are subject to change.

Teens at the Shoreline Teen Center are old enough to check themselves in and out. While staff support them while they’re here, we are not able to supervise once they leave the building.

Today is the 27th day of the Republican Shutdown. While Republicans and Trump refuse to govern, millions of federal workers are suffering across this country, unsure of when they will get their next paycheck, and how they will pay their bills and keep food on the table for their families.

In partnership with Mayor Bruce Harrell and the City of Seattle, this event will be an opportunity to learn about and access resources from local government and organizations directly supporting federal workers and their families. From Friday morning through Monday morning, October 24-27, 2025 Shoreline Fire crews were dispatched to 147 calls. Some of the notable incidents included:

Saturday, 2:30 PM: Working fire in Bothell.

Saturday, 4:50 PM: Surface water rescue for a kite boarder in distress.

Saturday, 9:50 PM: Tree into a house with a trapped resident.

Sunday, 10:40 AM: Working fire in Bothell.

Sunday, 6:50 PM: Residential fire started in Kitchen fire — smoke alarms alerted the resident.

Sunday, 9:30 PM: Assisted South County Fire with a fire at the vacant Family Fun Center in Edmonds.

Monday, 1:46 AM: Responded with law enforcement to a shooting; no ongoing threat to the public.

Monday, 6:30 AM: Motor vehicle collision — two patients transported after extrication.

Monday, 10:13 AM: Dispatched for a surface water rescue, cancelled prior to response.

It was a busy and demanding weekend, and we’re proud of our crews for their hard work and commitment to serving our community.

Safety Reminder: Check your smoke alarms, wear your life jackets and seatbelts, and safely secure your firearms.
