During World Interact Week, Shoreline Rotary celebrates the young leaders of Shorewood High School who are discovering that even small acts of service can make a lasting difference in their community.

As Rotary clubs around the world celebrate World Interact Week, November 2–8, Shoreline has a special reason to celebrate: the students of Shorewood High School's Interact Club are carrying forward a tradition of young people making a difference through service.

Interact is Rotary International's youth service program for young people ages 12–18. Interact clubs give students opportunities to develop leadership skills, build friendships, explore different cultures and, most importantly, take action to improve their communities.

The name Interact combines two words — international and action — reflecting the program's commitment to both local and global service.

Shorewood's Interact Club has roots dating back to 1997, when it was first sponsored by the Shoreline Rotary Breakfast Club. Nearly three decades later, a new generation of Shorewood students is continuing that tradition.

Shoreline Rotary is proud to sponsor the 2026–27 Shorewood Interact Club, providing encouragement, mentorship and opportunities for students to work alongside community volunteers.

The Interact Officers for this year include Cailin O’Leary, Jessica Saleska, Fran Luong, Nora Sterling, Reese Davidson, and Yena Shin.

Making a Difference, One Food Bag at a Time

One of the meaningful ways Shorewood Interact students put service into action is through their partnership with Shoreline Rotary's Food4Kids program.

Working side by side with Rotarians, Interact students participate in monthly food-packing activities, helping prepare food for children and families experiencing food insecurity. The work is practical and hands-on. Volunteers gather, organize and pack food, knowing that their time and effort will help provide support to local children.

For students, Food4Kids offers more than an opportunity to volunteer. It is a chance to see firsthand how community partnerships work and how people of different ages and backgrounds can come together around a shared purpose.

For Shoreline Rotarians, working alongside these young volunteers is equally rewarding. It is an opportunity to share the spirit of service, encourage emerging leaders and demonstrate that making a difference doesn't require a special title or a grand gesture. It begins with showing up and being willing to help.

Celebrating 64 Years of Youth Leadership

World Interact Day is celebrated November 5, marking the anniversary of the first Interact Club, chartered in 1962 at Melbourne High School in Florida. In 2026, Interact celebrates 64 years of inspiring young people to become leaders through service.

World Interact Week is an opportunity for Rotary clubs and their Interact partners to recognize the contributions of young people and encourage more students to get involved. Across the world, thousands of Interact clubs are demonstrating that young people have the ideas, energy and commitment to create positive change.

Shoreline Rotary believes that investing in young people is an investment in the future of our community. Through Interact, students gain valuable experiences in teamwork, leadership, community engagement and service — lessons that can last a lifetime.

The partnership between Shoreline Rotary and Shorewood Interact reflects the very heart of Rotary's motto, Service Above Self. It also reminds us that the next generation of community leaders is already here, learning, serving and making a difference.

Interested in getting involved? Shorewood students who want to make new friends, develop leadership skills and participate in meaningful community service are encouraged to learn more about the Shorewood Interact Club. The Interact Club meets on Thursdays at lunch in room 1111.

Together, we are building a stronger community — one act of service at a time.
