Four Shorecrest High School wrestlers competed at the WIAA 3A State Tournament

Tuesday, February 20, 2024

By Sean Rhodes

Four Shorecrest High School wrestlers competed at the WIAA 3A State Tournament at the Tacoma Dome last weekend.

Shorecrest Senior Peter Grimm. Photo by Matt Rapleje

Peter Grimm (SCHS Senior) started wrestling at age 5 for the Wrestling Rhinos Club and wrested the last match of his high school career last Friday. Unfortunately, Grimm had an injured shoulder and wasn't able to make it into the second day of the tournament. Grimm was a four year district/regional finalist and a three time state qualifier during his time wrestling for SCHS (the State Championships were cancelled in 2021 due to Covid protocol). This year Grimm was a WesCo South District champion and placed 3rd at regionals.

SC Junior Kenneth Adams. Photo by Matt Rapleje

Kenneth Adams (SCHS Junior) has been wrestling for Shorecrest since his Freshman year. This is the first year Adams has qualified for the state championships. He was a finalist at the WesCo South District Tournament (2nd place) and placed fourth at regionals. Adams has steadily improved year after year and is excited about being a team leader next year.

SC Junior Carter Nichols. Photo by Matt Rapleje

Carter Nichols (SCHS Junior) started wrestling just last year as a sophomore, but has had meteoric success right out of the gates. Athletic and agile for the 190lb weight class, Nichols was a WesCo South District Champion and placed 4th at regionals this year. This was Nichols' first year competing at state. He had some close matches, but fell just short of moving into the second day of competition at the Dome this year. Carter is also a candidate for team captain next year.

Sophomore Avi Wylen placed 4th at State

Avi Wylen (SCHS Sophomore) has been a long time member of Seattle Wrestling Club and started wrestling for Shorecrest High last year. Wylen was injured at Districts last year as a freshman and wasn't able to compete at regionals.

Determined to make up for that this year, Wylen placed 3rd at WesCo South Districts and 3rd at Regionals. Typically, unless you are a top seed (regional champion or a runner up), you don't make it into the second day of the state championships as a middle weight sophomore.

However, Wylen proved the skeptics wrong and not only made it into day two, but pushed all the way into the placing rounds! Wylen is the second sophomore in Shorecrest High School Wrestling history to place 4th at state.

With a solid core of state seasoned wrestlers returning to the program next year and some promising young talent entering the room from Kellogg Middle School, Coach Bryan Officer reports that the future looks bright for Shorecrest Wrestling.

Shorewood Girls Wrestling continued their winning ways at Mat Classic XXXV this weekend as three girls finished in the top 5. The Stormray girls finished in 9th place overall. Sophomores Finley Houck and Abi Chishungu placed 3rd at 110 and 190 lbs respectively. Junior Libby Norton placed 5th at 105 lbs.

After losing to the returning state champion and the regional champion, Libby Norton came back to take 5th place overall. Photo by Jeremy Tantrum.

The path to the podium included a match with the eventual champion for each wrestler. Norton faced 2x defending state champion Libby Roberts in the semi-finals. The loss forced Norton into the consolation bracket where she dropped a match against her regional finals opponent Rebecca Serrati, but came back in her medal match to take 5th place over Born of Curtis.

Finley Houck lost to the returning state champion, then won four in a row to place 3rd. Photo by Jeremy Tantrum

Houck’s first challenging match came in the quarterfinal where she faced returning state champion, undefeated Ashley Naranjo of Moses Lake. Houck successfully fended off a pin and even scored on Naranjo, losing in a major decision 11-2. Houck then stormed back winning 4 in a row to take 3rd place. Houck improved her finish over last year’s Mat Classic, where she placed 5th.

Abi Chishungu lost to the 1st place winner, then won her next two matches to finish 3rd.

Abi Chishungu won her first two matches and then faced off with Tru Willis of Silas. Chishungu battled hard but was eventually pinned in the 3rd period by Willis, who ended the night in 1st place. Chishungu then won her next two matches to finish in 3rd place. Chishungu’s improvement over this season was clear as she jumped from a 7th place last year.

Junior Izzy Crave logged five team points for the Stormrays, winning two and losing two, ending a great season one win short of the medal rounds.

Senior Mak Kanzler, who attends King’s High School, qualified for his second state tournament as a second year wrestler. Mak won 3 matches, but lost his second just shy of the medal rounds.

“I am super proud of my wrestlers. I am very grateful to be coaching such a resilient and fun group of kids. I look forward to next season. We want to be in that trophy hunt for a top 4 team finish,” said Stormray head coach Derek Norton.

The Shorecrest High School wrestling team wasn't able to fill a few weight classes this year, which affected the team's ability to successfully compete in dual meets throughout the season against tough WESCo South district rivals like Edmonds Woodway HS, Lynnwood HS and Shorewood HS.

However, the team does boast a solid core of middleweight wrestlers that were able to earn top spots on the district podium in the event.

The team placed 4th overall. The top six in each weight class will compete next week at the 3A/4A Regional tournament at Monroe.

Four Stormrays topped the podium as champions: junior Libby Norton at 105 lbs, sophomore Finley Houck at 110 lbs, sophomore Ellie Van Horn at 130 lbs, and junior Izzy Crave at 135 lbs.

Captain Izzy Crave said, “I couldn’t be more proud of my girls. I’ve seen so much improvement and see so much potential [in this team].”

Coach Brady Houck agreed, “I’m really happy with how the team performed. We [only] competed in 7 weight classes and had finalists in 5 of them. You can’t ask for much more than that.”

Coach Houck said, “I have to call out Ellie [Van Horn’s] performance in particular...Her dominant wrestling at district is a testament to her resilience and her potential.”

“We put almost an entire, 2-deep lineup into the tournament.” Coach St. Louis commented. “Each wrestler competed with heart. Having this many qualify for further postseason competition is a huge part of our foundation going forward.”
“This is a group of individuals that aren’t afraid to put in the hard work through a long season and build something bigger than themselves. I’m proud of the selflessness of each wrestler, and I’m excited for what the future holds for our program. Each of them put it on the line and it will pay dividends as we continue to grow.”

“Both the girls and boys have shown so much grit and determination this season. It’s great to be able to help them succeed and grow,” said Head Coach Derek Norton.

Shorewood wrestling defeats Shorecrest to take back the Spartan Cup

The Stormrays Take the Cup

By Tricia Norton

The Stormrays entered Scot territory on Friday night, January 26, 2024 in an attempt to claim back the Spartan Cup. While Shorewood has won the cup 11 times in the past 14 years, the 2022 and 2023 matches both went to the Scots.

It was the third match in five days for the Stormrays boys who had added two makeup matches due to the ice and freezing temperatures the week before. But they came out looking ready to wrestle.

The match started with an emotional 3-2 victory for Masa Taura of Shorewood, who was immediately leaving the school to fly to the funeral of a family friend.

Taura’s victory set the tone for the evening. It was full of close, intense matches. Kenneth Adams of Shorecrest couldn’t pin senior Rock Harris, but finished with a minor decision.

Stormray Sky Klein then pinned freshman Jakob Grimm in the second period.

At 150 lbs, James Nottingham refused to give up a pin to Owen Watson of Shorecrest who won in a 10-6 decision.

Shorewood then dropped two in a row to the Scots, a pin by senior Peter Grimm and a decision by Fletcher Musgrove

In the heavier weights, the Stormrays picked up 3 wins, pins by Mak Kanzler and Zo Ayers and a forfeit for Ben Jenkins. Carter Nichols of Shorecrest defeated Isaac Liljegren, but couldn’t get a pin.

As the match moved back to the light weights, the Stormrays picked up four successive wins to clinch the match. Freshman Finn Greenleaf won by forfeit, Eli Jeppsen by decision, and freshmen Emi Olivera and Matbeal Dinka picked up pins to add to their records.

“We’re bringing this back home,” said Coach Derek Norton to his gathered team as they celebrated together.

Shorewood Boys Wrestling takes down Lynnwood Royals

Senior Rock Harris had a big win

By Tricia Norton

It was a spectacular finish to Senior Night at the Shorewood High School boys wrestling match. The evening started with a JV bout between the two schools. Shorewood Junior Varsity boys beat the Royals soundly, winning more than half of the JV match-ups.

Then the Stormrays honored their six seniors. This year Shorewood’s senior class is an unlikely bunch--many of whom ended up on the mat as essentially first or second year wrestlers as seniors. But the boys have worked hard during their short wrestling careers, and the Stormrays came through with a win in a very close contest.

Three of the Stormray seniors got big wins during the match, Rock Harris at 138, Mak Kanzler at 175, and Zo Ayers at 215.

The seniors were aided in pulling off the win by freshman Emi Olivera who got a pin at 113, juniors Masa Taura, Sky Klein and James Nottingham who got pins at 132, 144, and 150 pounds respectively. Ayers' win at 215 clinched the match for the Stormrays.

Shorewood girls attended the 2nd annual Marysville Premier Girls Dual Team tournament on Friday night January 12, 2024. They came away with a 2nd place finish!

Without a full line-up, they weren’t sure that they’d be able to place, but were looking forward to getting in some great matches.

Shorewood first beat Glacier Peak 40 to 36. Then they took on Mount Vernon 48 to 21. In the final dual against Lake Stevens, it came down to the final match. Lake Stevens won 39 to 30.

Shorecrest wrestlers Rebecca Rhodes and Camille Alfonse filled in two of Shorewood’s holes as non-scorers. Rhodes’ three pins helped give the Stormrays energy and propel them on to their own wins.

Stormray freshman Sarah Norton got her first varsity wins. Junior Aly Fellores pinned all three of her opponents. Junior Cora Morgan and Sophomore Abi Chishungu also won by pin. Big wins by team captains Izzy Crave, Libby Norton and Finley Houck helped to bring home the medals.

Showare Arena was the setting for the challenging Gut Check Tournament this year on December 28th and 29th, 2023. Shorewood took several boys and most of the girls team to compete. The competition proved fierce. Shorewood boys came away with a few wins, getting some great experience to prepare for the postseason.

In the girls side of the tournament, the Stormrays had more success. Sophomore Abi Chishungu placed 3rd, coming back to beat the wrestler that originally pushed her into the consolation bracket. Sophomore Finley Houck placed 4th, and Junior Izzy Crave placed 5th with a quick pin in her medal match. The girls placed 25th overall, with wins by junior Libby Norton adding to the Stormray point total.

This coming weekend the girls will again face intense competition at the Braided 64 tournament in Kelso Washington. The Stormray boys will wrestle at the Decatur Invitational Tournament.

Coach Derek Norton commented, “We were so close in so many matches. We are a young team, and we still have a lot to learn. I’m proud of our efforts tonight.”

The Stormray JV are back in action on December 27th at Shorewood. Varsity Boys and Girls will be wrestling at the prestigious Gut Check Tournament at the ShoWare Center in Kent on December 28-29th.

On Wednesday, December 20, 2023 the Shorewood Girls Wrestling team braved the traffic for a double dual at Lake Stevens High school. The girls wrestled two dual meets. First they wrestled against a combined team from Marysville Pilchuck and Marysville Getchel, then against Lake Stevens high school.

In the match against the Marysville combined team, Shorewood took an early lead with wins by Ellie Van Horn and Amelia LaClergue. Izzy Crave added to the team total with a pin at 145 lbs, as did Cora Morgan with a forfeit at 155.

Abi Chishungu
got a 3rd period pin to take the SW lead to 30 to 6. Unfortunately, SW then gave up 3 straight forfeits and a pin at 110. Libby Norton picked up a win at 115 before Finley Houck took on 2023 state finalist Kira Songer. Finley tied up the match in the 3rd period, but then got caught and pinned. SW gave up another forfeit and ended the match 36 to 42.

In the match with Lake Stevens, Shorewood ran up against more tough competition. Pins by Stormrays Cora Morgan, Libby Norton and Ellie Van Horn as well as an injury default to Abi Chishungu weren’t enough to overcome the Viking lead. The final score was Lake Stevens 39 Shorewood 30.

Coach Brady Houck commented, “Today we had some big moments from wrestlers who are just starting out. First takedowns, first turns, first wins. That was the most exciting thing for me. It’s great to see girls who are willing to give wrestling a try, put in lots of hard work, and have that start to pay off.”

Thursday’s team score doesn’t tell the whole story of the dual meet at Edmonds Woodway.

The box score shows a final score of EW 48 and SW 36. But, in matches wrestled, SW pinned 6 Edmonds Woodway opponents, while the Warriors managed only 4 wins.

Forfeits can really swing the final score in a wrestling match.

Juniors Libby Norton, Aly Fellores, and Izzy Crave all won in first round pins, as did freshman Abi Chishungu

Sophomores Ellie Van Horn and Finley Houck both pinned their opponents in the 2nd period.

Several Stormray ladies had their first dual meet matches of the year, including Amelia LaClergue, Sarah Norton, and Natalia Pittman

The Stormray ladies will be adding another wrestler in the next week or so to help round out their lineup. Next week the ladies will face some tough opposition as they head to Lake Stevens for a double dual on Wednesday.
