Another year has Sno-King still doing dances from around the world. Our hallmark is variety, so we do dances in many formats- couple, no- partner, and set dances, and you are welcome to join us every Wednesday from 7:00 pm to 9:00pm.
You don't need to bring a partner. We start with requests, have a short lesson, and continue with a program of dances mixed with more of your requests.
Saturday January 10, 2026 is our monthly party, 7:00-9:00pm. This is THE SNO-KING BIRTHDAY PARTY!. Cake will be served. Paid up members get in free; of course you don't have to be a member to dance with us.
Wednesday January 14 is set teaching night, from 6:45-9:00pm. Sets take longer to teach so we start early, and if you come late you may not be able to join a set. Tesselation, an American set devised by our former president, will be retaught.

Jazzercise at the Spartan Recreation Center, 202 NE 185th St, Shoreline, WA 98155, has been a staple at this location for over 20 years.
There are morning and evening classes taught by dedicated instructors who are passionate about providing members with a fun and effective workout for ALL ages. Throughout the years Jazzercise has evolved with the fitness trends while staying true to its dance based movements.
Jazzercise dance fitness classes work because each class is designed to achieve maximum full-body effectiveness, through cardio and strength training, while boosting your mental health, too.
A Shoreline resident and Jazzercise member has written:
“I am 76 years old. The day before I quit my job at age 62, I decided that I would go to Jazzercise instead of work. They sounded equally distasteful. But that was one of the best decisions I ever made.
"I was never athletic nor a dancer, but I knew that to be healthy I should exercise, and so I began. I now love Jazzercise. I go three times a week from 9:00 to 10:00am, which is the perfect time for me. Enough time to drink my coffee, catch up on email and the news and get out the door.
"In Jazzercise I just imitate the instructor, and each instructor is really top notch. She faces us, dances along with us and names the moves as we do them. The music is always upbeat, and the moves vary but are choreographed so there is enough repetition to catch on.
"Class includes aerobics, strength training and stretching. Participants can challenge themselves to the max or take it easy on days when they need to.
"The women who participate are of all ages, and characteristically friendly. After class on Thursdays, various participants go to Sky Nursery for coffee to chat and catch up with each other’s lives.
"So yes, going to Jazzercise is one of the best decisions I ever made. Now it’s a habit so it’s easy, and I love it.”

The World Cup is Coming to Seattle

Unless you are an avid soccer fan, you were probably unaware that for the last three years, all over the globe, national soccer teams have been assiduously playing matches to qualify for the quadrennial competition known as the World Cup.
The reigning champions are Argentina, who in 2022 defeated France, and from there the process began again to culminate next summer in 2026 (June 11th - July 19th).
Most of the time, Americans are mostly unaware of this transnational madness that grips the rest of the world as the traveling circus is hosted by various countries around the planet every four years.
Unlike the World Series or NFL/NBA/NHL, any country in the world (over 200) can participate, and in theory be undisputed kings of the soccer world. Next year, the circus can’t be ignored as it will happen on American soil, which last occurred in 1994.
Thirty two years ago, this was a controversial decision, as the sport was not a nationally popular game at the time. It did result in the creation of a local professional soccer league, namely MLS, that has grown in stature.
But what unexpectedly caused the surge in popularity was the US Women’s National Team, who have won a record four world cups, famously the one in 1999, featuring the most notorious sports bra ever.
The American women have dominated the sport, and as the old adage goes, America loves winners. The US Men’s National team have labored in their shadow, with occasional glimmers of success.
In that time, generations of soccer moms (and dads) have encouraged American children to grow up learning to play The Beautiful Game of foot-ball (aka soccer), emulating homegrown heroes such as Hamm, Chastain, Rapinoe, Dempsey & Donovan.

Some of you may know local residents (and pioneering world cup greats) Michelle Akers, and Lori Henry, who used to play for Shorecrest and Shorewood HS, respectively.

The hope is that there is now a critical mass of high-level talent for the Men’s National Team to break into the upper or at least middle echelon of world soccer rankings.
However, the World Cup has also changed as FIFA (Federation Internationale des Associations de Football) has seen fit to supersize the tournament to 48 teams, and thus have multiple host countries, namely Canada, USA & Mexico.

As a side benefit, the host countries automatically qualify for the tournament. Expect to hear the names of Christian Pulisic and Jordan Morris as they do battle on the pitch for the US of A.
To make this more understandable, analogous American terminology will be used to explain this gargantuan beast.
- It will have a group stage of round-robin matches, much like NFL divisions for the regular season.
- This consists of twelve divisions (A-L) of four teams, with the top two in each group advancing to the playoffs, plus the best eight 3rd place wild-card teams.
- This makes thirty-two teams total in the playoff or knockout stage. This round of 32 will be very familiar, like NCAA Basketball March Madness brackets, it is win or go home.
- It will be whittled down to the Sweet Sixteen, Elite Eight, Final Four, and finally the Championship Final. As it happens, our local burg will host four of the divisional group matches, one round of 32 match, and one round of 16 match.
Group G June 15th: Belgium vs Egypt
Group D June 19th: USA vs Australia
Group B June 24th: TBD vs Qatar
Group G June 26th: Egypt vs Iran
Round of 32 July 1st: teams TBD
Round of 16 July 6th: teams TBD
Thus, there will be many nationalities visiting Lumen Field, they may even stray into Shoreline.
Should you encounter any enthusiastic soccer fanatics, just smile, nod politely, agree that their team is terrific, and take whatever currency they choose to throw at you, before directing them on their merry way.
The Link light rail extends from the north in Lynnwood, all the way to the south in Federal Way, with stops in Shoreline North (185th) and Shoreline South (145th), but most importantly, the Stadium stop, just off S. Royal Brougham Way, apart from the stop at SeaTac Airport.
This expanded format (for increased participation) helps the USA, with more matches and facing more lesser teams, but also increases the risk of being knocked out.

Those who love and hate the game know that the margins are fine, and on any given day, a lucky bounce, a penalty, a red card – anything could happen.
The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat, writ large. As has happened in the past, interest will peak when team U-S-A are playing, and will die down when the Americans inevitably get knocked out by a Major Football Powerhouse.
In the unlikely event that we win the World Cup, there will be delirium in about one third of the populace losing their minds, with the rest wondering what all the shouting is all about, before going back to watching baseball, basketball, hockey, or the other futbawl.

Flag lowering and memorial for Washington State Patrol Trooper killed in line of duty
I have no objection to agencies lowering the flags at the close of business on Friday, December 26, 2025. Flags should remain at half-staff until close of business or sunset on Saturday, December 27, 2025, or first thing Monday morning, December 29th.
Trooper Guting was standing outside of her patrol car investigating a two-vehicle collision when she was struck just before 7:30pm on southbound State Route 509 near milepost 2, south of the Port of Tacoma. Individuals on scene rendered aid, but the trooper ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
She answered her final call Friday night, marking the 34th time in WSP’s 105-year history that the agency lost one of its own in line of duty.
The Washington State Patrol will be hosting an intimate, family-focused service with appropriate law enforcement honors on Saturday, December 27, 2025, at Life Center Central Campus located at 1717 S. Union Ave, Tacoma, WA 98405.
Saturday’s service will not include a law enforcement processional, and has a focus on being surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues. As space may be limited, the event will be live streamed by TVW

Sherrard came through with 2 pins and technical fall.
Moser pinned each of her opponents, two of them in under 30 seconds.
Senior Lynn Ou won 2 of the 3 in her JV round robin, taking home 2nd place.
On December 20th Shorewood hosted the first ever Shorewood Invitational
Five teams gathered to put their athletes to the test before the winter break. While Edmonds Woodway took home the team title, Shorewood placed six wrestlers in the top three.
Third place finishes by junior Matbeal Dinka (132 lbs), senior Eion Ritter (138 lbs), sophomore Kai Graham (165 lbs), and senior Babou Cham (215 lbs) helped the team secure 3rd place overall.

Junior Max Uckun (157 lbs) and sophomore Lukas Probizanski (190 lbs) both finished the day 3-0 to take home top honors. Both athletes are going into the winter break with only 2 losses on the season.
The tournament was also a great community event. Pilgrim Coffee (owned by the father of two former Shorewood wrestlers) came out with their truck. The Shorewood families volunteered time and food to help put on a great tournament. This may be the first of many Shorewood Invitationals.

Next up for the Stormrays, the boys head to Oregon for a dual team tournament while the girls compete at the Gut Check tournament at Showare Center.

- Where: Portions of northwest and west central Washington.
- When: Until 7 PM PST this evening.
- Impacts: Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.
Use extra caution when driving, especially if operating a high profile vehicles. Secure outdoor objects.
This storm is going to be more like the winds we've already experienced this season, potentially less severe than some of the storms we've already had. I'm not expecting to see too much damage or anything beyond a few isolated power outages throughout the region.

When the Bon Marché / The Bon was absorbed into Macy's and then Amazon in downtown Seattle, there was concern that the beloved Christmas star would be lost in the deals.
But Amazon preserved the tradition and the star still burns brightly on the building at the corner of 4th & Pine.

- What: South winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts 50 to 60 mph expected.
- Where: Eastern Kitsap County, Middle Chehalis River Valley, Northern Hood Canal, City of Seattle, Eastside, Lowlands of Lewis and Southern Thurston Counties, Lowlands of Pierce and Southern King Counties, Olympia and Southern Puget Sound, Shoreline / Lynnwood / South Everett Area, and Willapa and Black Hills.
- When: From 10 AM to 7 PM PST Wednesday.
- Impacts: Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.
- Additional Details: Winds will initially begin as east/northeasterly in the morning before an abrupt shift to southerly by midday, with which the strongest winds will occur. Highly saturated soils will allow for an enhanced risk of tree damage and uprooting.
People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.
As shown in the forecast image above, the strongest winds are expected between Shoreline and Everett and extend west over the north Kitsap peninsula. This is a very fast-moving storm, coming up the coast from the south. It is expected to arrive suddenly and then be gone within an hour or two once it hits.
Winds are likely to gust between 40-55mph through our area, but a couple of models suggest gusts above 60mph. I am giving that worst case scenario about a 10-15% chance at this point but it is in the cards so something to pay attention to.
Timing for this storm to blow through Shoreline and Lake Forest Park is expected to be between 1pm and 4pm PST Wednesday afternoon. If this forecast verifies and we see wind gusts exceeding 55mph it will be our strongest wind storm this season. With existing soil conditions several trees will likely uproot and fall. Power outages could be widespread from this storm as well throughout the region.
If you have dinner plans with friends or family for Christmas eve, I highly recommend you wait out this storm and try to push dinner plans after 5pm or get to your destinations before 1pm. This storm has potential to be a bad one, but there has continued to be a lot of uncertainties in the forecast models.
I always like to err on the side of caution, especially when the National Weather Service issues a warning, as opposed to an advisory. That said, modeling hasn't exactly been consistent with handling this storm.
Some forecasts over the past 24 hours have suggested we could see just a breezy day, light winds, or a monster storm at 73mph. There is a slight chance this could be worse or as bad as past historic storms. Hanukkah Eve Storm of 2006 comes to mind, as does the 1993 Inaugural Day Storm.
Most Likely Scenario: Chances are greatest that this will just be a moderate windstorm, not unlike the ones we've already experienced this month with winds gusting to 45-55mph.
There is a slight chance that this storm could totally bust and produce a noticeably calm or slightly breezy day with just some rain showers. The path of this low-pressure system only has to change by 50-100 miles in either direction to produce one of the three different scenarios.

State Route 104/Ballinger Way NE is reduced to one lane near 35th Ave NE from 8pm Tuesday, December 23, to 6am Thursday, December 24, 2025.
Flaggers will alternate traffic through the work zone.
Contractor crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation are performing sewer work along the state highway.
This work, which could be noisy at times, is part of the SR 104 Lyon Creek fish passage project.

Continuing a decades long tradition, volunteer Santas from Shoreline Fire will be out on Christmas morning, visiting westside neighborhoods to greet families and hand out candy to the kids.
They use a vintage rig, driving slowly through the streets, playing Christmas music and blowing the horn.
Families gather as they hear the rig coming, standing on the street with warm drinks in hand, waiting for Santa.
Last year, for the first time, they drove through central Shoreline, from Echo Lake through Meridian Park and Parkwood. They terrified a lot of people who were unaware of the tradition and heard raucous noise, fire horns, and perhaps caught a glimpse of a fire engine.
Babies cried, car alarms went off, and dogs barked.
Once people realized it was all in good fun, they came out to greet the fire Santas.
This year they are back to their old route, not planning to go east of 8th NW, covering places where people understand what the noise means and welcome it as an opportunity for photo ops!

Transit agencies announce free rides on New Year's Eve
King County Executive Girmay Zahilay announced that Metro will join other regional transit agencies to provide free rides this New Year’s Eve, December 31, 2025.
Riders can travel without paying fares on King County Metro, Sound Transit, Community Transit, Everett Transit, Pierce Transit and the Seattle Streetcar as part of their holiday celebrations.
“Leaving the driving to us is becoming as great a New Year’s tradition as celebrating at the Space Needle,” said Executive Zahilay. “No matter where you plan to ring in the new year, you have access to free transit options to get you there!”
Regional transit agencies will operate on specific schedules to accommodate fare-free New Year’s Eve and riders are encouraged to check times beforehand.
