87 year old North City woman killed in crosswalk on 15th NE

Friday, June 14, 2024

A photo by David Sprengeler posted to social media shows the scene of the collision

An 87 year old North City woman was struck and killed by a van in a crosswalk on 15th Ave NE at NE 180th just after 9am Thursday morning, June 14, 2024.

The driver was making a left turn from 180th to 15th when he struck her. He immediately stopped and started CPR.

A King County Sheriff’s Office  photo shows the van at the intersection of 180th and 15th

Shoreline police and fire responded to the scene and according to a statement from the King County Sheriff’s Office, the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated.

Shoreline Fire reports that their first unit, L161 was on scene 2 minutes and 25 seconds after being dispatched and found bystander CPR going on. Their personnel worked on her, put her in the back of the medic unit which arrived about two minutes later, where the medics continued working on her, but ultimately she passed away.

The incident is still under investigation and the intersection was closed for several hours on Thursday morning.

By noon, the road had been re-opened and traffic had returned to normal.

That crosswalk (like most others in Shoreline) has not been reconfigured with a Leading Pedestrian Interval (LPI) to give pedestrians a head start while crossing intersections.

According to the city’s Traffic Report, three Shoreline intersections have recently been reconfigured with LPI, but 180th and 15th is not on the list of intersections planned for safety improvements.

According to the Washington State Patrol’s website, there have been 34 collisions near that intersection since 2016.

The Art of Death: Preparing the Way for Those We Leave Behind

The Art of Death: Preparing the Way for Those We Leave Behind
Sunday January 7, 2024 -11:45am to 1:00pm

Since we do not know the hour of our death or the manner in which it comes, preparing the way for those left behind is relevant to every adult, not just aging baby boomers.

The loved ones we leave behind deserve our consideration and attention. When you die, it is left to others to sort out your affairs. After your death, they will be in mourning, sad, angry, confused, and not at their thinking best.

The better you plan before your death and the more conversations you have with them, the easier it will be for them.

Grieving is hard enough without the added burden of making decisions and following up on things that were best done by the person who died.

As the one left behind, what do you wish you had known before your person died? What could they have done that would have made their absence more bearable? That would have made “getting on with it” easier?

Join us on Sunday at 11:45am as we begin to have conversations about The Art of Death: Preparing the way for those we leave behind. Share your stories of having loved ones die and how things went, whether good or not.

Two die while attempting to repair residential sewer line

Tuesday, July 5, 2022

Photo from Google Earth.

Two individuals who were part of a crew working to repair a fractured sewer line Monday July 4, 2022 around 1:30pm died after the trench they were in collapsed around them.

They were working in the backyard of a residence at the 600 block of NW 163rd St in Shorewood Hills I in the Highland Terrace neighborhood of Shoreline.

The two were in the trench when the soil caved around them. The rest of the crew, then Shoreline Police immediately worked to try to dig them out.

Shoreline Fire arrived and set up the scene for a trench rescue. They were able to partially expose the patients and use their monitor to do an EKG to check for signs of life. They found the two to be already deceased.

Several attempts were made to recover the bodies but the site is on a slope and the soil is unstable.

The area was deemed unsafe to continue the recovery process. Around 9pm the crews had to clear the area and cease for the night.

Fire will continue their efforts with several partners in the morning.

Kittitas County Sheriff: Seattle Fire Chief died from a fall - body escorted back to Seattle

Saturday, November 20, 2021

Deputy Fire Chief Jay Schreckengost
Seattle Fire
The body of Deputy Fire Chief Jay Schreckengost was transported home to Seattle Friday, November 19, 2021 by members of the Seattle Fire Department in Fire Department vehicles.

A forensic examination of the Chief ordered by the Kittitas County Coroner revealed numerous injuries including a broken wrist and broken spine. The autopsy concluded the cause of the Chief’s death was multiple blunt force trauma. Further investigation in the field led investigators to believe Chief Schreckengost fell down steep hillside or cliff faces more than once before coming to rest where he was found last Sunday.

It’s known that there was snow on the ground when Chief Schreckengost went scouting for Elk on the morning of Tuesday, November 2, 2021 —creating slick conditions in that already rugged and dangerous terrain.

The location where he was found was near the bottom of a sharp, broken slope about 700 feet in elevation, north-northeast from the end of spur road 553 off Forest Service Rd 1703 in the Wenatchee-Okanogan National Forest near Cliffdell.

It’s believed the Chief slipped or fell down a part of that slope into terrain where he could neither climb back up nor safely descend. Another fall brought him near the bottom of the slope and caused a fatal spinal fracture.

The area where the Chief came to rest was covered in thick brush and could not be safely navigated by searchers without technical climbing equipment and expertise.

The team that located him on the afternoon of Sunday, November 14 included members of Mountain Rescue Teams from Seattle, Tacoma, Everett and the Olympic and Central Mountain Rescue Teams. These teams of skilled and trained volunteers searched miles of cliff bands in the mountainous area near the Chief’s last known location before finally locating him.

The Mountain Rescue Teams and all the Search and Rescue volunteers who participated were part of a monumental effort including and spurred by the passion of Chief Schreckengost’s fellow Seattle Firefighters.

The coordination and commitment of everyone who assisted in the search was a fitting tribute to the Chief, and we hope that his final voyage home provides some comfort to all who loved him.

The Environmental impact of cremation

Environmental Impact of Cremation
Thursday, April 8, 2021, 3 - 4:30pm

Online event - REGISTER HERE

Roughly 80% of Washingtonians choose cremation, citing concerns over the environmental impact of traditional burials.

But what about the environmental impact of cremation? We now know that this energy-intensive process releases 219 known emissions, including greenhouse gases and carcinogenic toxins.

Washington state’s affinity for cremation has led to 1,400 pounds of mercury vaporized in the last five years alone, to say nothing of the natural gas consumed.

People’s Memorial Association’s Beverly Tryk will consider the environmental impacts of our funeral choices and take a critical eye to what we thought we knew about cremation.

Reasonable accommodation for individuals with disabilities is available by request. Please contact the library at least seven days before the event for ASL interpretation, captioning services and/or other accommodation for online programs. Send your request to mjharkovitch@kcls.org

Detectives investigating train-vs-pedestrian fatality in Woodway early Tuesday

Detectives from the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office are investigating the death of a man whose body was found on the railroad tracks in Woodway, directly north of Shoreline, in the early hours of Tuesday, September 8, 2020.

According to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Courtney O’Keefe, deputies responded around 3am to reports of a body seen on railroad tracks near Richmond Beach Drive and Point Wells Road. Upon arrival, deputies found a man, believed to be in his 20s, dead on the tracks.

Major crimes detectives and collision investigation unit detectives responded to the scene, and detectives are still working to determine the cause of the incident, O’Keefe said. Detectives believe the victim was likely hanging onto the train before falling onto the tracks, she added.

At this time, there does not appear to be any evidence of foul play, but cause and manner of death, as well as positive identification of the victim, will be provided by the Snohomish County Medical Examiner.

Local author advocates for National Stop on Red Week following the tragic death of her mother in a Kenmore crosswalk

Sunday, August 2, 2020

Lori Koidahl at her mother's memorial garden
shows the book she wrote about how to navigate
grief and begin to heal

Not a day goes by that Shoreline resident Lori Koidahl doesn’t think about being a cautious driver. Her mom was tragically killed in a Kenmore cross walk on June 19, 2007 by a driver who ran a red light. The story, which made headline news, included six other pedestrians who were also injured with Lori’s mom, Kathy Cook, who was killed at the scene.

A truck speeding at 45mph hit a front loader, a massive piece of machinery that moves dirt, which sent the truck careening toward the pedestrians and crushed Lori’s mom against a utility pole.

This week Lori is placing a sign at her mom's memorial garden, which is at the intersection of the crash site. It promotes safe driving habits during National Stop on Red Week, August 2-8, 2020.

The signage serves as a reminder of the dangers in intersections and the importance of Stopping on RED. Preventing these crashes is in each driver’s control.

Stop On Red Week is observed in August to educate the public and bring awareness to the number and severity of intersection crashes. This event provides an opportunity to promote safe driving and remind drivers of the dangers of running red lights.

  • Between 2004-2018, an estimated 11,877 people were killed in crashes related to red-light running according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
  • In 2018, 846 people were killed, and an estimated 139,000 were injured in crashes involving red-light running.
  • In a 2018 national telephone survey by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 85 percent of drivers said it's very or extremely dangerous to speed through a red light, but 31 percent reported doing so in the past 30 days (AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 2019).
  • The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS) found that about half of red-light running crash deaths involve pedestrians, cyclists and occupants in vehicles struck by the red-light runners.
  • On average, two people died each day in red-light running crashes in the United States in 2018.

Lori Koidahl’s mom Kathy’s tragic death changed the trajectory of her life. She has become a safe driving advocate and recently wrote a book about her experience navigating the grief and healing she went through losing her mom in such an unexpected and traumatic manner.

Lori said, “I don't want others to have to go through what I went through. Especially when it can be prevented by paying closer attention to one's driving and “STOPPING ON RED.”

Her book is called Garden of Grief and can be purchased through normal retailers including Third Place Books, 206-366-3333 or HERE
