At the January 26, 2026 City Council meeting Mayor Betsy Robertson read the following statement on behalf of the whole Council regarding ICE tactics in Minneapolis:
We are deeply saddened and troubled by the enforcement tactics employed by the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency across our nation. We unequivocally call for an immediate end to all federal law enforcement tactics that generate fear, disrupt families, and ultimately undermine the safety and stability of our community.
No one should fear for their own safety in their community, especially from those sworn to protect it. We believe that law enforcement must always act with integrity and professionalism. The Shoreline Police Department works hard to build trust throughout the community by treating all individuals with respect and dignity. We appreciate their commitment to creating a safe community for all here in Shoreline.
We reaffirm our commitment to creating an inviting, equitable, and safe community for all and to protecting the Constitutional right of all individuals to peacefully protest. Shoreline is a community that celebrates its diversity and respects the human dignity of everyone regardless of where they are from or how they arrived here.

Shoreline City gov't issues proclamation affirming open borders.
That all sounds so nice but where is the sentiment when these people, illegally, are in our country and bringing in the drugs and killing innocent people? Why do you continue to protect these people yet no sorrow for the victims? For once, I wish somebody would be able to give me a good answer to this question, other than hypocrisy at it's finest.
I guess Mayor Robertson is perfectly fine with the violent and illegal tactics being used by many of the Minneapolis rioters.
Observation is fine. Recording is fine. Interference with law enforcement is a crime. Property destruction is a crime. Unlawful imprisonment is a crime. Conspiracy on all the above is a MAJOR crime.
Nobody gets to hide behind the claim of peaceful protest when they are committing violent criminal acts. Many have learned nothing from 2020 and are determined to repeat it.
Thank you for clarifying and reaffirming your commitment to following the law and protecting the rights of people living in Shoreline.
Bots working overtime if they're posting such unpopular opinions in the comments of shorlineareanews.com.
Glad the council put this out, I'm sure they are getting a lot of pressure from constituents to decry the murder of American citizens.
Thank you for this common sense, law-based perspective that protects all American citizens as well as our undocumented law-abiding neighbors. Edmonds police and city hall shared a similar but more detailed message just this week. As a resident of Shoreline for 20 years, it has never felt more important to speak plainly about what is right and uphold the laws meant to protect us all.
Those are nice words, but I’m looking forward to a more detailed and tactical plan at the next council meeting (not sure why Feb. 2nd’s meeting is canceled) for supporting the families whose lives are being destroyed by ICE in the Shoreline community. ICE abducted a man on Aurora and 163rd on January 27 on his way to dropping his toddler off at daycare before heading to work. This little boy will traumatized and may never see his father again. What is the Shoreline City Council going to do to protect its citizens? https://www.gofundme.com/f/free-ivan-guzman-from-illegal-ice-detention
You can choose to believe that we are bots if you don’t share our perspective. Or you can acknowledge that in a democracy people are entitled to have differing opinions. I realize that’s something that neither end of the political spectrum are comfortable with.
A statement by a reader has been published as a letter to the editor:

Thank you for this statement. I hope it’s followed by some action to protect shoreline citizens. It’s a great time for shoreline to affirm their “all belong here” slogan and show us that next. It’s a seriously tough time and united we are much stronger.
I am honestly curious about stats and real life examples of all the crime that is always touted as the respond people should be detained and “shipped back” and I wonder what you think of current actions of people who are being detain who 1) have citizenship and 2) have no criminal record?
Does “All belong here” = open borders?
Open borders = propaganda.
There are no open borders. Previous administrations deported people as well but didn't do it with such brutality and cruelty (except for the previous Trump admin and Tom Homan).
The vast majority of undocumented people are not criminals.

I welcome the day when this much energy is spent preventing domestic violence from our own citizens.
People have the right to peacefully protest and that is what is happening. There is no rioting. Please explore a range of news sources and ask yourself why you would condone treating ANY human being this way.
Thank you.
