Pink Polka Dots lemonade stand on the Burke Gilman Trail

The Seattle Children’s Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild would like to thank the community for their incredible support of their lemonade stand on August 25, 2024 which was held on the Burke Gilman Trail in Lake Forest Park.

The Pink Polka Dots raised $725.40 from selling home baked goods, lemonade and hand crafted cards at the four hour lemonade stand. All the money will be donated to continue pediatric brain cancer research.

The first lemonade stand was started by Quinn, Ally and Aila
in 2014 and the girls are still baking and selling 10 years later

The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild was founded in 2006 in memory of Sydney Coxon. Sydney died at age eleven after a battle of just over a year with an untreatable brainstem glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.

The Guild was founded one month later by her 6th grade friends in honor of Sydney.

The Pink Polka Dots have raised over a million dollars in a variety of fundraisers over the years. If you would like to donate, please visit pinkpolkadotsguild.org

Tuesday, August 22, 2023

Dr. Jim Olson stopped by the PPD lemonade stand on his bike ride to thank the girls for their fundraising efforts that support the research he does in his lab on pediatric brain cancer research.

On Saturday, August 19, 2023 the Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild of Children’s Hospital had a very successful lemonade stand raising over $600 for Children’s Hospital.

Members sold lemonade and homemade cookies and cupcakes to patrons along the Burke Gilman Trail while sharing about the work that the Guild does.

The mission of the Pink Polka Dots is to raise money for pediatric brain cancer research and empower young people to recognize their own abilities and the power to change the lives of others.

Members include elementary to high school students in Lake Forest Park and they have raised over a million dollars since 2006.

The Guild welcomes new members. The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild was founded in 2006 in memory of LFP resident, Sydney Coxon. Sydney died at age 11 after a battle of just over a year with an untreatable brainstem glioma, a rare type of brain tumor.

Thank you to all who came by the lemonade stand to support the Pink Polka Dots!

Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild golf tournament fundraiser for cancer research

Thursday, August 17, 2017

Founded in 2006 by Lake Forest Park 6th graders in memory of their friend, Sydney Coxon, the Pink Polka Dots are a Seattle Children’s Hospital Junior Guild funding research to cure cancer.

You may have seen members selling handmade cards and gifts at the LFP Third Place Commons Holiday and Farmer’s Markets, or selling lemonade along the Burke Gilman trail this summer.

This year's tournament will be held at
Echo Falls golf course in Snohomish

The Pink Polka Dots also team up with local sponsors and the Coxon Family Foundation to host the Sydney Coxon Memorial, a fun afternoon of golf followed by an inspirational evening program, including dinner, a silent auction, and dessert. This year we will be hosting at a fabulous new venue, The Golf Club at Echo Falls, in Snohomish.

In eleven years, these philanthropic youngsters have raised over $850,000 to fund groundbreaking research for better treatments, and hopefully someday a cure, for pediatric brain tumors and many other cancers.

The Pink Polka Dots’ fundraising supports the work of Dr. Jim Olson at Children’s Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

The funding has allowed researchers to develop exciting treatments including “tumor paint” which makes cancer cells glow for easier surgical removal, and a drug-delivery device which will increase efficacy and minimize side effects of chemotherapy treatment.

Dr. Olson’s latest effort, “Project Violet”, involves discovering and producing cancer-fighting optide drugs from natural sources, like flowers and insects.

Funding from Guilds and patient families is critical to researchers' ability to keep moving forward to save lives of children and adults with cancer, and potentially other diseases like Alzheimers and diabetes. To read more about the research and make a donation to the Pink Polka Dots, visit their website.

To Register for Golf and Dinner ($125 pp) or just the Dinner and Evening Program ($60 pp), or to Sponsor or Donate, go to the event site.

Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild

On September 12, the Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild of Lake Forest Park hosted their 9th Annual Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf Tournament.

Each year, the Seattle Children’s Hospital Junior Guild teams up with LMI Aerospace, Inc., and the Coxon Family Foundation to host an afternoon of golf followed by an inspirational evening program. The tournament, dinner, and silent auction capped off another year of successful fundraising, bringing in over $72,000!

Card sales in Lake Forest Park

Founded by local 6th graders after losing their friend, Sydney Coxon, to a brain tumor in 2006, the Pink Polka Dots are focused on funding research to cure cancer. You may have seen members selling handmade cards and gifts at the LFP Third Place Commons Holiday and Farmer’s Markets, or selling lemonade along the Burke Gilman trail this summer. Their custom made art cards are also available at The Gallery, the store run by Shoreline/LFP Arts Council in the LFP Town Center.

After nine years, these charitable youngsters and their families are ever closer to their goal of raising one million dollars to fund groundbreaking research for better treatments, and hopefully someday a cure, for pediatric brain tumors.

Cancer researcher Dr. Jim Olson
spoke of new discoveries

The Pink Polka Dots’ fundraising proceeds support the work of Dr. Jim Olson, who was the keynote speaker at the event. The funding has allowed researchers at Children’s Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center to develop exciting new treatments including “Tumor Paint.”

Dr. Olson announced that Tumor Paint, a drug derived from scorpion venom, which makes cancer cells glow for more precise surgical removal, is now available and has been used successfully in the first patients, including a young boy with a brain tumor.

The latest effort in the Olson Lab, “Project Violet”, involves discovering and producing cancer-fighting optide drugs from natural sources, like flowers. Funding from Guilds and patient families is critical to researchers' ability to keep moving forward to save lives of children and adults with many types of cancers, and potentially other diseases like Alzheimers and diabetes.

It’s not too late to help fund research for a cure -- and have fun doing it! Pink Polka Dots’ next fundraiser, an all-ages Karaoke Night at Community Fitness in Seattle, is happening this Saturday October 3rd, with professional Karaoke DJ provided by Quality Karaoke.

To buy tickets to Karaoke Night, read more about Dr. Olson’s research, and make a donation to the Pink Polka Dots, visit their website.

Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild hosts 9th annual Golf Tournament fundraiser to fight cancer

Friday, September 4, 2015

The girls made table decorations for the tournament

Kids grow up a lot in nine years, but what hasn’t changed is this Junior Guild’s dedication to raising money for cancer research.

6th grade seems a distant memory to the founders of the Pink Polka Dots, all in college now, who started out selling handmade cards and gifts at the Lake Forest Park Farmer’s Market in 2006.

Cardmaking party

But the Pink Polka Dots will never forget why they began fundraising. Three Brookside Elementary girls started the Seattle Children’s Hospital guild after losing their friend and classmate Sydney Coxon to a brainstem glioma when she was just 11 years old. From this heart-wrenching beginning, the Junior Guild has always “thought big” and worked hard to raise money and awareness to fight pediatric brain cancers and fund research for a cure. They once said their goal was to raise a million dollars – they are ¾ of the way there!

Selling handmade cards at the Farmers Market
July 2015
As the original members have grown and gone away to college, new generations of Lake Forest Park kids have joined and carried on the Pink Polka Dots’ mission. This past year, the Pink Polka Dots sold their handmade cards and other merchandise at the Arts Council Gallery at the LFP Town Center, the Guild Association Annual Luncheon, the LFP Farmer’s Market, and more. The youngest new members held a successful lemonade and cookie stand fundraiser along the Burke Gilman trail on a very hot day this summer.

Next week, the Pink Polka Dots will host their 9th Annual Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf Tournament, Dinner and Silent Auction on Saturday, September 12th, at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett.

This year’s event sponsors include LMI Aerospace, the Coxon Family Foundation, Technology Marketing (TMI), ASC Process Systems, Kirtley-Cole, Presage Biosciences, and Frank Lumber/Kylemont Industries.

All fundraising proceeds benefit the research of Seattle Children’s Dr. Jim Olson at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Olson was Sydney’s oncologist and in the last nine years his labs have developed incredible new tools for fighting brain tumors and other cancers. Independent funding is critical to the development of new cures.

It’s not too late to register or donate! Join for the afternoon of golf and dinner ($130 pp) or the dinner and evening program ($60 pp). Dr. Olson will be the featured speaker at dinner and you can hear directly about how your support is moving us nearer to cures for cancers. Details here.

Pink Polka Dots raise $75,000 for cancer research with golf tournament

Pink Polka Dot members at the 2012 Golf Tournament

The Pink Polka Dot’s annual Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf Tournament, held on September 8th, brought friends, family, community and business supporters together in the fight against pediatric brain tumors.

The event raised nearly $75,000 to fund research under the direction of Dr. Jim Olson at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Seattle Children’s Research Center.

Following a beautiful afternoon of golf in sunshine, about 150 guests enjoyed the dinner, silent auction, and program at Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett. Seattle Children’s Oncologist Dr. Sarah Leary spoke about recent breakthroughs in research and Andy Keener, a former patient who now works with Dr. Olson, expressed how important direct research funding which the Guilds provide is moving new treatments forward.

The event is sponsored each year by Integrated Technologies, and generous matching funds are provided by the Coxon Family Foundation, in loving memory of Sydney, who passed away in 2006 from a pediatric brain tumor.

The successful fundraiser enabled the Pink Polka Dot Junior Guild to reach the $500,000 contributed to date mark.

Pink Polka Dots 5th Anniversary Art Exhibition and Sale May 22

Friday, April 29, 2011

PPD Guild members selling their art cards
The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild plans to celebrate five years of funding Seattle Children’s Hospital cancer research with a fundraiser featuring fine art, crafts, and specialties from local artists and guild members. This is scheduled for Sunday, May 22, at the Lake Forest Park Civic Club, 17301 Beach Drive NE, Lake Forest Park, from 2 to 6pm.

The Pink Polka Dots (PPD) was founded by then-sixth graders Sierra Alef-Defoe, Maddy Berkman, and Kelsey Josund after their friend Sydney succumbed to a brainstem glioma, an inoperable brain tumor. The girls created their guild, named after Sydney’s favorite pink polka dot motif, through the Seattle Children’s Hospital Guild Association and have been raising money for cancer research ever since.

The PPD, largely comprised of teens under 17, have a history of involving their community in their fundraising efforts. Their most prominent events have been the sale of art cards made by guild members online and at farmer’s markets, middle- and high-school dances, and benefit concerts, as well as their annual Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf Tournament, which is in partnership with Sydney’s family and local engineering and manufacturing company Intec. To date, the guild has raised over $330,000 for Dr. Jim Olson’s lab at the Fred Hutchinson Research Center.

PPD hopes their 5th Anniversary Art Sale will expand their community of supporters in the fight against pediatric brain cancer.
“Any chance to reach out to the community is another chance to fund a cure for cancer,” says Josund. “Come, buy some beautiful art, and help us raise money for this important cause!” The May 22 event will feature PPD custom art cards, refreshments and music in addition to the wide variety donated of art, photography, crafts and art glass for sale.

Pink Polka Dot Guild are "Find of the Week" on Nate Berkus website

Friday, January 28, 2011

The three teenaged founders of the Pink Polka Dots Guild were featured on the Nate Berkus Show on Thursday, January 27.  Not sure how long the Find of the Weeks photos will be up, but right now you can see them here.

Here's the link to view the episode on your computer.

I have "embedded" it in this article, but for email subscribers, some of your browsers may strip it out.  If you click the title of the article or go to our main website ShorelineAreaNews.com you should be able to see it.

The girls, friends from Lake Forest Park, are really quite impressive in their accomplishments.  It's always inspirational to see people move from tragedy to attainment - and they were just little girls when their friend Sydney Coxon died of a brain tumor.

Local teens to be featured on The Nate Berkus Show Jan 27

Sunday, January 23, 2011

Kelsey Josund, Maddy Berkman, Sierra Alef in New Yor
Local teen fundraisers, The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild, will be featured on the January 27 episode of the nationally syndicated Nate Berkus Show, January 27 at 5 pm on Channel 6/16 KONG.

Nate Berkus is an award-winning decorator who appeared as a feature design expert for The Oprah Winfrey Show from 2002-2010, before starting his own show in September 2010.

The segment about the Pink Polka Dots and the custom art cards the girls sell to raise money for brain cancer research was filmed in early January in New York City.

The Pink Polka Dots (PPD) was founded by three now-teenaged classmates, in memory of their friend Sydney Coxon who died at age eleven of a brain tumor. As a Seattle Children’s Hospital Junior Guild, the majority of members are teens or younger.

“No one should have to go through what Sydney’s family went through,” says guild co-founder Kelsey Josund. “We want to prevent any other family or child from being affected by brain tumors.”

Maddy, Sierra, and Kelsey at the Nate Berkus show.
PPD raises money through fundraisers such as golf tournaments, benefit concerts, and high school dances, and sells art cards and handmade jewelry at markets and online. After the episode airs, The Nate Berkus Show will aid online sales of cards by directing interest from their website.

Since its founding in 2006, PPD has raised over $330,000 -- more than any other Children’s Hospital Junior Guild -- for brain cancer researcher Dr. Jim Olson. Dr. Olson’s lab is responsible for groundbreaking research into tumor detection, removal, and treatment, including “tumor paint” (featured in Time Magazine, July 19, 2007).

The guild will be featured in the “Nate’s Finds” segment of the show. Founding members Kelsey Josund, Sierra Alef, and Maddy Berkman were flown to New York for the filming and interviewed on behalf of the guild.

In the Seattle area the episode will air January 27 at 5 pm on Channel 6/16 KONG; see the Nate Berkus Show website for information about airtimes in other areas. Pink Polka Dot Guild golf tournament benefits pediatric cancer research

Saturday, August 7, 2010

September is *Childhood Cancer Awareness Month* and Lake Forest Park’s own Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild announces that Registration is now open for their biggest annual event, the Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf Tournament, Silent Auction and Dinner to be held September 11 at the Legion Memorial Golf Course in Everett. It is a fun way to support research for a cure for pediatric brain tumors.

Registration is now open at The Sydney Coxon Memorial Golf Tournament page . There is an early discount if you register for golf or dinner-only before August 25.

If you like to golf, bring some friends and sign up a foursome. Or if you register as a single, you will be matched up with a fun group. If you don’t want to golf, remember you are welcome just for the buffet dinner and dessert, raffle drawings, silent auction and program in the evening. There will have some interesting speakers, including researchers and a local 15-year-old brain cancer survivor.

The Pink Polka Dots Junior Guild formed in memory of their friend, Sydney.  Sydney died February 2006 after a year-long battle with a rare type of brain tumor. She was only eleven.

The goal is to raise enough money for researchers to find a cure or more effective treatment for brain tumors. After seeing Sydney’s heartbreaking fight with her illness, they don’t want this to happen to any other child or family. The funds they raise support the groundbreaking research in Dr. Jim Olson’s Lab at Seattle Children’s and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

They raise funds through direct donations and the sale of handmade and printed art cards, jewelry, and crafts at farmer’s markets and special events such as dance party, benefit concert, and lemonade stands. The Guild, with Sydney’s family, holds the annual golf tournament each September. They have now raised more than $250,000 for the cause.

Direct donations to the cause are always welcome. Much of the research that they fund shows promise for all kinds of cancers, not just pediatric cancers. Donations can be mailed to 18115 33rd Ave NE, Lake Forest Park WA 98155, or made via PayPal through either the Pink Polka Dots website or the Sydney Coxon Memorial webpage.
