Ben Borgida finishes in third place in the Washington State Men's Amateur Golf Championship

Amid the offseason for the Washington State men's golf team, redshirt sophomore and 2022 Shorewood graduate Ben Borgida made a splash, finishing third place in the Washington State Men's Amateur Championship at The Links at Moses Pointe, in Moses Lake, Washington.

Over the course of the three-day tournament the Wazzu product shot 10-under. Borgida shot back-to-back 69s over the first two days and saw his lowest round of the tournament the final day, firing a 68 with six birdies.

"Overall, I feel great about my performance. I was able to use what I had to my advantage and made sure to stick to my game," Borgida explained post round.

The redshirt sophomore finished his first season seeing action with a round under par in the Cougars final tournament win at the 2024 National Golf Invitational, and the rising sophomore continues to build off that going into next season.

"This finish gives me a lot of confidence leading into the season because I know my B-game is good enough to compete with the best amateurs in the state," Borgida added. "I'm going to continue to be grateful that I have the opportunity to play in the summer and get ready for my next season for the Cougs."

Two Shoreline students and one Edmonds student have been awarded the Evans Scholarship – a full housing and tuition college scholarship offered to golf caddies – following a selection meeting interview held at Seattle Golf Club in Shoreline, on February 14, 2024.

The recipients caddied at the Seattle Golf Club in southwest Shoreline. The students will begin college this fall as Evans Scholars, attending one of the Program’s 24 partner universities nationwide.

Decisions on awarded schools will be finalized by March 15, with most expected to attend the University of Washington in Seattle. The Evans Scholarship is valued at more than $125,000 over four years.

The Western Golf Association (WGA), headquartered in Glenview Illinois, has supported the Chick Evans Scholarship Program through the Evans Scholars Foundation since 1930.

To qualify for the Evans Scholarship, each student must meet the Program’s four selection criteria and show a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character.

Local scholarship recipients are:
  • Rose Darley, Shoreline, Shorewood High School
  • Reagan Dunphy, Shoreline, Shorewood High School
  • Ian Ngethe, Edmonds, Meadowdale High School

Currently, a record 1,130 caddies are enrolled at 24 universities nationwide – including 31 at the University of Washington – as Evans Scholars. More than 12,040 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars since the Program was founded by famed Chicago amateur golfer Charles “Chick” Evans Jr. in 1930.

“We are thrilled to welcome this new group of student caddies to the Evans Scholars family,” said WGA Chairman Steve Colnitis. “Their dedication in the classroom, on the golf course and in their communities represents what our Program has been about since 1930.”

To learn more about the WGA and ESF, visit wgaesf.org.

Established by the WGA and famed amateur golfer Charles Chick Evans Jr., the Evans Scholars Foundation provides full housing and tuition scholarships to high-achieving caddies across the country.

Currently, a record 1,130 caddies are enrolled in 24 leading universities across the nation as Evans Scholars. The Program, which is supported by the WGA, is funded by contributions from more than 38,500 Par Club members, including Evans Scholars Alumni, as well as proceeds from the BMW Championship. Since the Program’s inception in 1930, more than 12,000 caddies have graduated as Evans Scholars.

Shorewood Girls Golf team played in true "northwest wet" for their match Wednesday with Meadowdale.

Shorewood's Ivey Ren and Julia Kang finished at 3rd & 4th place overall under rainy skies, and soaking wet fairways.

Shorewood had 3 players on the course that were playing their first match - ever. This is a team learning to play the game, and learning to compete all at the same time. Very proud of this team.

Our next Match is with Shorecrest on April 3, 2024.

SW Girls Golf celebrates sunshine and first win

Thursday, March 14, 2024

l-r Sofina, Maya, Sadie & Ivy. Sofina and Sadie returning players
and Maya and Ivy are new to the team.

It was a beautiful day at Jackson Park Golf Course and the SW Girls Golf competition is underway.

This spring, players from all schools have faced rain, hail, snow, wind and really cold temps, not the typical 'golf weather' we associate with the sport.

We persisted, we are practicing and we are improving, One swing at a time!

We played a good team, and nice girls from Archbishop Murphy. Their #1 player was the medalist for the match and Sofina, Ivy and Sadie rounded out 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place finishes for our first match.

ALL the girls from BOTH schools played with a lot of heart today. Jackson Park is not an easy course for new golfers. Everyone cheered each other on and it was a good day for players and the coaches.

Shorewood High School Girls Golf Team begins practice on February 26, 2024

Shorewood girls are ready for the greens

Shorewood High School Girls soon prepare for 'team golf & get ready to compete'!

Practices begin on February 26, 2024.

We typically think of golf as an 'individual sport', however, it's exciting to witness the energy & team spirit when rooting on a player to sink a putt for their team. No matter if you win or lose.

"Golf is many things, and it's also about the camaraderie of playing a sport they may play for a lifetime.
We call that 'investing in youth sports" and 'growing the game'."

Golf teaches life skills: patience, confidence, honesty, perseverance, respect, courtesy and responsibility. Golf also offers: engagement with others, energizing them to learn something new, while exercising outdoors, and also - enriches their lives.

Shorewood HS has nine girls preparing for the team! It's going to be a fun spring!

Watch us bloom and grow!

Banchero Friends annual golf tournament to support independent living for developmentally disabled clients

Saturday, August 5, 2023

Annual golf tournament to benefit Banchero Friends
will take place August 30 in Newcastle
On August 30th, Cedar Grove Composting will host their annual golf tournament at China Creek Course at Newcastle to raise funds for Banchero Disability Partners as they continue to provide independent living services for its thirty-six developmentally disabled clients and their families.

Banchero Disability Partners (BDP) has been an integral part of the Shoreline area service providers for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities since 1971.

This annual golf tournament provides an annual opportunity to reacquaint the local community with the supported living services they provide to their constituents.

Since its last tournament, prior to the pandemic, BDP has added nearly a dozen clients and completed a campaign to own and occupy a second set of apartments in the Shoreline area.

The expansion of services to more individuals and their families has brought with it extra demands to hire staff and create new programs.

“Our amazing staff builds the skill sets of our clients so they can live happily, independently, and safely integrated into their local communities. Funding living wages to attract competent staff to support our clients 24/7 is our priority” says Carol Salter, Executive Director of BDP.
“The golf tournament, sponsored by Cedar Grove Composting is a great way for us to work with the community and share the amazing stories we experience every day.”

Nyima (right) and Lisa
Banchero Disability Partners owns and operates two apartment buildings in North Seattle and Shoreline, renting apartments to many individuals they serve, as well as to other low-income neurotypical individuals, migrants, and refugees, serving the greater Shoreline community.

Recently, the City of Shoreline granted them a “Love your Community” grant funding BDP’s annual summer picnic at Paramount School Park on July 23, 2023.

The Community Integration celebration was attended by approximately 100 individuals, including clients and their staff, family/guardians, and members of BDP’s Board of Directors.

Salter acknowledges “Cedar Grove Composting has been our longest and most generous supporter for over forty years. We are proud to be the non-profit organization they have elected as their focus and look forward to their charity event this month.”

The Cedar Grove Composting Golf Tournament benefiting Banchero Disability Partners is August 30th at 11am at the China Creek Golf Course in Newcastle with all proceeds benefiting BDP clients.

Dinner and a small silent auction will follow the tournament and are included in the registration fee. The entry fee is set at $200 for an individual, $750 for a team of four, and an opportunity to advertise your business as a hole sponsor for $1,000.

"Every player on our team contributes in every match. Girls are eager to help each other when it comes to rules.

Emily Zhang was second place overall. Sofina Morgan, Josie VandenDyssel and Sadie Austad persevered and finished 7th, 8th, 9th respectively.

Monday, August 1, 2022

This summer, nine female high school students in Washington were invited to participate in the Western Golf Association’s (WGA) second annual Seattle Caddie Academy, including Shoreline resident Rose Darley.

The nine students were given an opportunity to caddie at a local golf club.

Beginning June 18, 2022 participants have worked daily at Seattle Golf Club in Shoreline and Broadmoor Golf Club in Seattle, while living together for seven weeks at the University of Washington Evans Scholarship House.

The WGA’s Caddie Academy provides summer work opportunities to promising high school students who ultimately hope to pursue the Evans Scholarship – a full tuition and housing grant to college.

“After a wonderful inaugural summer last year, we are excited to expand the Seattle chapter, welcoming back four past participants and five new students who will learn invaluable life lessons on the golf course,” said Sarahi Ortiz, manager of Caddie Academy and Education at the WGA.

Rose was a member of the original Seattle group in 2021 and has returned for her second year with the program.

Participants, who all have financial need and strong academics, are selected to take part in the Caddie Academy during their freshman year of high school. On the golf course, students earn money, meet role models and learn invaluable life lessons. After successfully completing three summers, they become eligible to apply for the Evans Scholarship.

In 2022, more than 155 young men and women are participating in the Caddie Academy program across the country, with additional chapters in State College, Pennsylvania, Minneapolis and Chicago. More than 100 Caddie Academy alumni have gone on to earn the Evans Scholarship.
