Shorecrest Scots Footballers make it three straight with win over Lynnwood Royals

Sunday, September 22, 2024

Shorecrest Football
Friday 9-20-2024
At Edmonds Stadium
Shorecrest 48 – Lynnwood 7
Head Coach: Brandon Christensen
Overall record: 3-0

#8 Ben Chesnut gets pulled down by a gaggle of Chimeras

Edmonds, WA: The Shorecrest Highlander Football team came out hot in this matchup against the Lynnwood Royals and never cooled off, winning in the autumn air at Edmonds Stadium by a score of 48 to 7. The Scots’ offense produced 432 yards with five different players scoring those seven touchdowns.

The action started early with Scot’s QB Danny Stephenson hitting Ben Chesnut for a 28 yard touchdown reception just past the one minute mark in the first quarter. Chesnut would go on to add another receiving touchdown and a 29 yard rushing touchdown for a total of three scores on the night.

#7 Eli Gojdics was up next, plowing through the Royals’ defense for a touchdown from 11 yards out to put the Scots up 13-0. Pavel Tatarinov added the PAT. Tatarinov was 6 of 7 for extra points.

#1 Anthony Downing with a 12 yard touchdown reception

Anthony “Ant” Downing stopped the ensuing Royals drive with an acrobatic interception at the Scot’s 10 yard line. He would go on to haul in a 12 yard touchdown pass from Stephenson in the second quarter, as well as shutting down the Royals’ receivers in his role at cornerback. Stephenson would finish the game with over 200 yards passing and three touchdowns before being relieved in the third quarter by sophomore QB David Telling.

Senior running back Kenny Adams also had a big night, scoring through the Royals defensive front from their one yard line for a touchdown. He would lead all rushers with 67 total yards on five carries. Junior Milo Hamilton capped off the Scots’ scoring with a six yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

#58 Carter Nichols chases down #18 QB Kevin Sandu of the Lynnwood Royals

Defensively, the Scots held the Royals scoreless until late in the fourth quarter. Led by Max “Mac Truck” Beer and Soren Lirhus with five tackles each, and Isaiah Blid with 4.5 tackles, the Royals had a tough time getting anything going. Lirhus also had a brilliant 32 yard run as a backup running back in addition to averaging 42 yards as the Scot’s punter.

Assistant Coach Sammy Seliga was a Scots Senior in 2018 when the Highlanders last started the season 3-0, and even with the loss to injury of defensive starters Seniors Tyson Lasconia and Joey Eck, Coach Christensen and his staff have the Highlanders firing on all cylinders.

Next up is Mountlake Terrace, this Friday at home at Shoreline Stadium at 8pm. The Hawks are 2-1 and coming a big win over conference opponent Meadowdale.

Shorecrest football wins big over the Everett Seagulls 9-13-2024

Everett Memorial Stadium
Shorecrest 35 – Everett 6
Overall record:  2-0
Conference record: 1-0

Following up on their season opening win at home against Lakeside, the Shorecrest Football team took on the Everett Seagulls at Everett Memorial Stadium.

With storm clouds on the horizon that proceeded to dump rain midway through the first quarter, the Scots showed some thunder of their own by scoring four times before halftime, adding one more score in the third quarter to prevail over ‘Gulls, 35-6.

Senior quarterback Danny Stephenson began the rout with a deep throw in the first quarter, hitting classmate Charlie Chen in stride behind the Everett defense for a 65 yard touchdown. Chen would end the night as the receiving leader, with 84 yards on four catches. Pavel Tatarinov, a junior, added the PAT to put the Scots up 7-0.

Tatarinov was perfect for the night, with five PATs in addition to his kickoff duties.

Minutes later, Stephenson, rolling right, hit senior Ben Chesnut who bullied his way into the north endzone for a 14 yard gain and the Scot’s second TD of the night.

Following up on this score, senior Kenneth Adams, on a fourth down with two yards to go, decided to sprint 14 yards through the Everett defense for his first touchdown of the season, putting the Scots up 21-0.

Not to be outdone, senior Anthony Downing enjoyed his first varsity touchdown with what might have been the most electric play of the evening. From mid-field, Stephenson delivered a strike which Downing pulled in at the Everett 35 yard line. With one man to beat, Downing made a nifty move and then put on the afterburners to turn the catch into a 42 yard score. He finished the night with three receptions and 64 yards receiving.

Coming out after halftime, Chesnut would add a rushing TD to his total for the night, scoring from the Everett two yard line, to put the Scots up 35-0.

Defensively the Scots held the Seagulls to 30 yards on the ground, led by senior Max Beer. Beer, who returns as a second team all-Wesco pick at Linebacker, had five tackles for the night. Senior Soren Lirhus and sophomore Isaiah Blidchenko added 4.5 tackles each, with Lirhus also recovering an Everett fumble.

Junior Michael Murray, also an all-Wesco second team pick last year at defensive tackle, blocked a ‘Gulls punt as well.

Shorecrest's next game is Friday night at Edmonds Stadium at 8pm where the Scots face the Lynnwood Royals. Edmonds-Woodway High School 7600 212th St SW, Edmonds, WA 98026

Annual Rotary Cup Shorewood - Shorecrest football game Friday, October 20, 2023

Monday, October 16, 2023

Shorewood won the 2022 Cup
LFP Rotarian Allen Merry is holding the cup.

The 2023 Rotary Cup Football Game between Shorewood HS and Shorecrest HS is scheduled for Friday, October 20, 2023.

This crosstown rivalry has a long history; this will be the 45th Annual Rotary Cup.

Tradition is that at the end of the game, members of Lake Forest Park Rotary and Shoreline Rotary take the Rotary Banner out on the field and the winning team gets behind the banner for a photo op.

The photo is from last year’s event when the Shorewood Stormrays (renamed from the Thunderbirds in 2021) won the game against the Shorecrest Scots, 22-7.

They were ecstatic, probably because they had lost the previous eight years in a row.

It should be noted that Shoreline Rotary will be inducting Rob Petschl, the Shorewood varsity head football coach, on October 18th at our next in-person / hybrid meeting.

The 2023 Rotary Cup Game:
  • Where: Shoreline Stadium, 400 NE 185th Street, Shoreline, WA 98155. The stadium is just to the west of I-5 on NE 185th Street, immediately adjacent to the Shoreline School District Headquarters and Conference Center.
  • When: 5:30pm gates open, 7:00pm game time.
  • How Much: Adult admission is $7.00, Seniors and Children $5.00.

Correction: Rob Petschl is the Shorewood varsity head football coach. The Shoreline Schools Athletic Director is Don Dalziel.

Rob Oxford: All three of our varsity football teams were victorious in their first week of play

Thursday, September 8, 2022

Shorewood Coach Rob Petschl and son Reid (#11)
Shea Sullivan Photography
By Rob Oxford

We’ve wrapped up the first week of the 2022/23 high school football season and all three of our varsity teams came away victorious.

Shorecrest

Coach Brandon Christensen is back for his 13th season at Shorecrest, preparing another young team for the bright lights of Friday Night.

In an effort to improve on last year’s disappointing overall record of 3 – 7, Coach C. has enlisted the talents of first year coaches Marcus Tidwell and Des Fox, both former Shorecrest standouts, to hopefully replicate the one-loss season they enjoyed together in 2021.

The Scots got the season started at home against Meadowdale, defeating their Wesco opponent 14 – 8. A low-scoring defensive battle, the highlight of the night was the exceptional play of Ben Chesnut. The junior had two sacks, one resulting in a safety, scored the game winning touchdown and intercepted the pass that ultimately ended the night for the Mavs.

Shorecrest will have their hands full Friday as they travel to Monroe to take on a Bearcat team coming off a 56 – 14 win over Roosevelt and ranked 12th (3A) in the state.

Shorewood

The Shorewood Stormrays were in action last Friday afternoon meeting the Lakeside Lions under a blazing hot, end-of-summer sun at Nathan Hale and had I known the bleachers at the field weren’t covered, I’d have worn my bonnet.

In all fairness and with full disclosure, I chose to attend the Shorewood game because my son is in his 2nd year as an assistant to Head Coach Rob Petschl.

This should be an exciting and somewhat emotional year for the Stormrays Coach as his son Reid Petschl is a Captain playing in his Junior year.

However, if last Friday’s game is any indication, production is not something that needs to overly concern Coach Rob. Especially on the Defensive side of the ball. Reid and fellow Senior Hunter Tibodeau recorded two sacks and nine tackles each on their way to a 41 – 30 win over Lakeside. On the Offensive side of the ball, opponents will want to keep an eye or probably all eyes on the Senior running attack of Alberto Solano, Eduardo Eulogio, Isaac Van Horn and Rory Swanson.

On Friday, the Stormrays are home against Lynnwood at 7pm.

Kings

Kings was also at home last Friday with a non-district matchup defeating Lincoln 48 – 23. This Friday, Coach Jim Shapiro and the Knight’s host East Jefferson (Port Townsend) at Woolsey Stadium and in an effort to cover more of the Friday Night action and give all of our athletes the recognition they deserve, I’ll be digging something red and white out of my closet and seeing you Friday at Woolsey Stadium.

Bobblehead Hall of Fame releases the Russell Wilson

Monday, November 29, 2021

The Bobblehead Hall of Fame is honoring Russell Wilson on his birthday November 29 with his own bobblehead in the Framed Jersey sports series.

The new Framed Jersey series features some of sports' biggest stars and mascots with a replica of their jersey encased in a glass frame behind the bobblehead.

Wilson’s bobblehead features the star quarterback making a pass with his #3 Seahawks jersey encased in glass behind him.

The bobbleheads are available at this link: http://bit.ly/wilsonframed Each bobblehead is individually numbered to only 2,021. The bobbleheads are $40 each plus an $8 flat-rate shipping charge per order.

Russell Wilson was born on November 29, 1988, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and will turn 33 on the day of the bobblehead’s release. Wilson was selected by the Seattle Seahawks in the 3rd round of the 2012 NFL Draft with the 75th overall pick.

He’s played his entire 10-year career with the Seahawks, becoming a fan favorite. He led the Seahawks to the franchise’s only Super Bowl title in 2014 and has been selected to the Pro Bowl seven times including the last four seasons.

He recently commented that he wants to play at least another 10 years in the NFL and own an NFL franchise when he retires.

"We’re excited to be releasing this awesome new bobblehead featuring one of the NFL’s biggest stars,” National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum co-founder and CEO Phil Sklar said. “Russell Wilson has been a legend both on and off the field and we think fans will love this new bobblehead.”

The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame and Museum, located at 170 S. 1st. St. in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, opened to the public on February 1, 2019. The HOF and Museum also produces high quality, customized bobbleheads for retail sale as well as organizations, individuals, and teams across the country.

The bobbleheads were produced by FOCO.

Rob Oxford: Back in Blue

Friday, September 3, 2021

Rob Petschl coaching the 2020 SC Defense. Photo by Rob Oxford

By Rob Oxford

Several years ago, at the suggestion of a good friend and contributor to this publication, I submitted a sports editorial I had written strictly for my personal Facebook page.

To my great surprise and utter delight, it was published and I soon found myself contributing more articles as well as covering high school football for Shorecrest. This became quite easy as both my sons were playing, I love football and already had the intention of attending every game.

Flash forward 7 years.

My last sports article for the Shoreline Area News was in March. A recap of the Shorecrest Scots' win over Sultan and a brief mention of the upcoming Rotary Cup. Which as it turns out, was an extremely lopsided victory for Shorecrest over their perennial rival the Shorewood Thunderbi…ooops! Is it still “Thunderbirds”?

It didn’t seem like a Rotary Cup, or for that matter the final game of my son’s high school career and it certainly didn’t warrant rubbing the reader's nose in a 50 – 6 Shorewood loss, so the season just sort of…ended.

As a Shorecrest football fan and Dad the season was over and so were I thought, my days of regularly watching and reporting on high school football.

As it turns out my youngest son has signed on to be an assistant to new Shorewood Head Coach Rob Petschl. Rob coached the defense last year at Shorecrest and for three years prior. We became fairly close during that time and I am confident his is the type of leadership needed to turn around the Thunderbird program.

Fortunately, he’s no stranger to T-Bird territory having been head coach once before from 2010 – 2014. During that period, he racked up a less-than-stellar record of 12 wins and 38 losses. A record he has no problem recalling and one he is determined to improve upon mightily.

Coach Petschl with son Reid. Photo by Rob Oxford
This is a special opportunity for Coach Petschl.

His son Reid is a sophomore football and baseball player, while Reid’s twin sister Paige is also an accomplished athlete.

His youngest son Cole will be a Thunderbird next year and the opportunity to not only watch them grow and compete, but assist in their development as athletes is a coaching Dad’s dream.

Because of the lack of success over the past several years, Shorewood Football Fans have very low expectations.

This may be good for an incoming coach concerned about wins and losses, but if your focus is “creating a positive football experience through academics and leadership” there is much more at stake.

Coach Petschl hopes to expand on the “Team” concept by developing an even stronger relationship between his players and their community.

Part of which includes recruiting more parent involvement by way of the Thunder Football Facebook page. Thunder Football | Facebook

Next to Head Coach Petschl on the sidelines this year will be:

  • Alex Barashkoff (Offensive Coordinator/Offensive and Defensive Line).
  • George Monica (Running and Defensive Backs).
  • Wyatt Tonkin, a legendary name not unfamiliar to Shoreline residents regardless of your high school loyalty will be coaching the Offensive Line.
  • First year coach Robbie Oxford (Wide Receivers/Linebackers),
  • former Shorewood Graduate Tres Zeigler (Wide Receivers/Linebackers/Special Teams).
  • Jay McArthur will handle Varsity Quarterbacks while heading up the C Team and
  • Jeff D’Amelio (Offensive Line/Defensive Line).

Given they’ve been friends and colleagues for many years and from the stands you can barely tell them apart, Coach Petschl wouldn’t reveal to me whether or not he and Shorecrests Brandon Christensen had a friendly wager concerning this year’s Rotary Cup, but I can assure you as it gets closer his players will be thinking of nothing else.

I’ve had to buy a whole new wardrobe of blue and white, but don’t go running to Goodwill for my green and gold shorts and shirts. My wife, a 1985 Shorecrest Graduate, has them safely tucked away.

Good luck to all our athletes from both Shorewood and Shorecrest, may this be a year of much success and accomplishment.

Rob Petschl hired for second go around with Shorewood Football

Shorewood High School and the Shoreline School District are pleased to announce Rob Petschl as their new Varsity Head Football Coach.

Petschl replaces Brandon Torrey who resigned after six years as Head Coach. Shorewood is two years removed from a round of 32 postseason appearance under Coach Torrey's leadership. We are grateful for his time and effort.

This will be Petschl’s second go around as the Shorewood Head Coach. Coach Petschl previously was at the helm from 2010-2015 where the team saw consistent growth through those five years.

Coach Petschl is no stranger to Shorewood, the Shoreline School District and the WESCO Conference. All said, in Petschl’s 26-years of coaching football, 16 of those have been within the Shoreline School District. Most recently Petschl served as the Defensive Coordinator across town at Shorecrest.

We are excited to have someone with Rob’s credentials and coaching experience. We know what we get with Rob, and we are confident he checks all the boxes to get Shorewood to a competitive level within WESCO and District 1.

He came into the interview process with a plan and an excitement to be the leader of the Shorewood Football Program. In addition, Rob is well connected with the area football community and we feel this will be an asset as he builds this program. We look forward to another run with Rob as our Head Coach at Shorewood.

Rob Oxford: At the last game of the season, the Rotary Cup stays in Highlander hands

Saturday, April 3, 2021

Shorecrest Senior Football Players, Cheerleaders and Flags

Story and photos by Rob Oxford

They went from not knowing if they would have a season, to winning 4 out of 5 and keeping the Rotary Cup in Highlander hands.

Thursday night the 2021 Shorecrest Scots ended what was arguably their best season in years with a 50 – 6 win over their crosstown rival Shorewood Thunderbirds.

Normally the most attended game of the season, the Rotary Cup brings alumni from both schools back to town for a weekend of beer drinking, storytelling and chest-thumping. Hopefully next season will return to normal with the stands packed full of fans and the smell of Otis Burgers again permeating the night air.

This season, outscoring their opponents 189 to 32 in just 5 games, the Scots demonstrated that the Shorecrest football program is right where it needs to be. A roster full of talented underclassmen returning in just a few short months, Coach Brandon Christensen and his staff should have a legitimate shot at that elusive Wesco title in 2022.

But before we start raising banners, let's pay homage to the 14 Seniors and their teammates who completely dismantled the Shorewood Thunderbirds last Thursday Night.

The Home team Scots are traditionally escorted into battle by a pack of Pipers. But on this night, led by Seniors Robbie Oxford and Gabe Nelson, the team made their entrance to the sound of “Scotland The Brave” being played on a boombox. Take it from me…(sniff)…still quite effective.

Shorecrest Freshman Logan Yao presented a beautiful rendition of the Star Bangled Banner and before the SC band had finished the school's fight song, the referee was signaling “Touchback” as Gavin Dalziel yet again blasted an opening kick into and out of the end zone.

Starting from their own 20-yard line the T-Birds would immediately get a taste of what the night had in store as the Scots Outside Linebackers Jaxon Taylor and Robbie Oxford were in the backfield almost before the snap, corralling the Shorewood QB for a 2-yard sack.

But a nice option play by T-Bird signal-caller Rahmatullah Salim provided a fresh set of downs and tough running from Jack Dereche moved the ball across midfield into Scots territory. Facing 4th down and 5, the T-Birds opted to throw a deep pass that was broken up by Safety Des Fox. A turnover on downs, the Scots took possession with the ball on their own 42-yard line.

Two plays later the Scots drew first blood. First a quick hitch pass to Des Fox for a gain of 15 yards, followed by a 54-yard sprint to the end zone by “Lightning McQueen”… excuse me, I meant QB Carson Christensen. A delay of game penalty would push the extra point attempt back 5 yards and Kicker Gavin Dalziel would add a little excitement by banging it off the uprights, but through for the first 7 points of the 2020-21 Shoreline Rotary Cup.

After Dalziel’s ensuing kickoff pinned the Thunderbirds inside their own 10-yard line, the Scots Senior Defensive Line of Jacob Halvorsen, Maksim Takhtarev and Jordan Glesener set up camp and started making Smores.

Soon facing 4th and 6 the T-Birds got off a great punt, then the Scots were called for “roughing the kicker,” affording Shorewood 4 more downs on Offense.

Still unable to generate any positive yardage and facing 3rd and 12, an untouched Jaxon Taylor had the T-Birds QB wrapped up 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Fortunately for the T-Birds, Salim was able to mimic enough of a pass to signal an incompletion and the Scots would take over after a short punt by Shorewood Sophomore Isaac Van Horn.

Raising the cup

With the ball at midfield, Shorecrest Offensive Coordinator Dillon Baker called #34’s number and 21 yards later, Marcus Tidwell had the Scots sitting at the Thunderbirds 30-yard line. With a minute left in the first quarter, Christensen would find Des Fox (who made a spectacular catch) in the back of the end zone for the Scots second score of the game.

Despite great effort from Sophomore RB Eduardo Eulogio, Shorewood was still unable to move the ball on the Scots Defense. Faced with another 4th and long, the T-Birds opted for a little trickery. Faking the punt and attempting to convert the first down on a pass to 6’5 Senior Zach Herndon. What happened next was a little confusing.

Signaled as a “turnover on downs” the Highlanders took possession on the T-Birds 31 and two plays later had their 3rd score of the night. With excellent protection from Daryl Scott, Carson Christensen was able to find his backup, Andre Lasconia in the end zone for his first touchdown reception of the year.

The PAT attempt was a thing of beauty as Gavin Dalziel lined up the kick and, on the snap, took an over-the-shoulder lob from Holder Des Fox and scurried into the end zone for a 2-point conversion.

Scots 22 – Shorewood 0

Great pass coverage from Zane Morga-Baisac and Ramy Abdalla kept the T-Birds from converting a first down on their next series and the Scots Offense quickly trotted back onto the field.

Moving into Shorewood territory on a 10-yard run by Gabe Nelson, Christensen hooked up with Des Fox for a 38-yard reception and a first down on the ‘Birds 11-yard line. From there it was back to Lucky #7 (Nelson) for another Scots score. With 7:08 left in the first half and up 29 - 0, the Scots were making a statement and it could be heard from every corner of Shoreline.

With halftime rapidly approaching and Shorewood desperately needing a score, the Thunderbird Defense forced a Shorecrest punt. Back for the return Junior Jackson Chou mishandled the reception and the Scots Abdi Gabobe pounced on the loose ball.

Moments later, following Glesener, Halvorsen, Wyatt Patneaude and the rest of the Scots Offensive Line, Ben Seather-Brady slipped 20 yards downfield for the Scots 5th unanswered touchdown. Linfield College Recruit Gavin Dalziel would tack on another extra point and the Scots would have a commanding 36 – 0 lead over the Thunderbirds with 2 full quarters of football left to play.

With :06 left in the first half, Shorewood attempted a Hail Mary pass only to have it intercepted by Des Fox, adding even more stats to his already impressive season totals and taking both teams to intermission.

Thanks to both the Shorecrest and Shorewood Cheer Squad, Hip Hop and Flag Teams performances, the halftime entertainment was a welcome attempt at normalcy. Although both schools’ drumlines were in attendance, Fight Songs just don’t sound the same without horns.

Shorewood would kick off to start the 3rd Quarter and the chances of their attempting an onside kick were high. The chances of their recovering even higher, but a well-placed kick by Sophomore Alberto Solano achieved the desired effect and Shorewood had the ball in Scots territory. Continuing to apply pressure however, the Scots Defense would not relent and soon handed possession of the ball back to its Offense.

What took place next can only be described as heartbreaking for a Senior Wide Receiver playing in his final game. In the span of 3 plays, The Scot’s Des Fox caught not 1 but 2, 55-yard touchdown passes only to have both called back. One for holding and the other for what appeared to this reporter as a phantom “block in the back”. Ever the team player, Fox just shrugged it off and continued to make big plays.

Scots defense

As the evening progressed, stout defense from the Scots continued to prevent the Thunderbirds from building any type of momentum.

With 2nd and 3rd string players seeing a lot of action, Shorecrest showed how deep they are on the defensive side of the ball.

A 56-yard touchdown run by SC Junior Daryl Scott with 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter would activate the “point differential” rule and require the clock to continue running, except for officials’ timeouts.

Try as they might the Thunderbirds were simply unable to get anything going offensively. The final touchdown for the Scots would find Backup QB Andre Lasconia following the likes of Freshman Elijah Glesener, Sophomore Matthew Ma and Juniors LJ Baxter and Grant Bailey 45 yards downfield to the Shorewood 2-yard line. From there, Daryl Scott would add to his touchdown totals with a 2-yard dive.

On the final play of the night Shorewood would avoid the shutout when QB Sontri Jorkhang found their tallest receiver Zack Herndon in the end zone for 6 pts. A rough night for the Thunderbirds, they’ll surely look to exact their revenge next season.

Saying goodbye
For the past 7 years as both my sons made their way through the program it has been my pleasure to watch and report on the Shorecrest Highlanders for the Shoreline Area News, sharing in the excitement that comes from winning and the stinging disappointment that follows a loss.

I’d like to thank Coach Brandon Christensen and his staff for allowing me the privilege of running the Highlander Football Gridiron Group and Shoreline Athletic Director Don Dalziel for hardly ever saying “no”.

Time to pass the torch.

Hoot Mon!
#66 Always a Scot
